• What type of VPS stats should I look for?

  I have a few websites that average a total of 10,000 uniques a day across my network. I also have a few mobile apps that pull xml data maybe 5,000 calls a day. My sites aren't anything major just a few wallpaper websites and few other small sites, nothing real database intensive. I currently own a dedicated server and I feel like it's overkill for my network. I'm looking into getting a Virtual Private Server (VPS). I was just wondering what kind of stats I should be looking for to support my network of sites. Thanks

• How can I make my FireFox Browser AddOn Backwards Compatible?

  I'm making a firefox browser add-on, and I just got all of the code working fine, but it will only install in FireFox 16, and I want it to be compatible at least from 10+, has anyone dealt with this issue? I have my package.json pointing to my install.rdf, and my install.rdf clearly states target applications.   Hi, on my Apache/PHP server, file test.php.html is parsed by PHP, while test.html is not. PHPDOC create a lot of *.php.html files, with a XML header wich is a pain for PHP parser, but how to tell Apache not to pass *.php.html file to PHP and just send back the file to browser?   I'm serving up a static site via nginx. location ~* \.(avi|bin|bmp|dmg|doc|docx|dpkg|exe|flv|gif|htm|html|ico|ics|img|jpeg|jpg|m2a|m2v|mov|mp3|mp4|mpeg|mpg|msi|pdf|pkg|png|ppt|pptx|ps|rar|rss|rtf|swf|tif|tiff|txt|wmv|xhtml|xls|xml|zip)$ { root /var/www/html1; access_log off; expires 1d; } And my goal is to exclude requests like http://connect1.webinar.ru/converter/task/. Full view is like http://mydomain.tld/converter/task/setComplete/fid/34330/fn/7c2cfed32ec2eef6788e728fa46f7a80.ppt.swf. Despite the fact these URLs ends in such a format they are not static, but fake script requests, so I have a problems with them. What is the best way to do this? How can I add an exclusion for this URL or maybe I can to exclude the specific file exptension (.ppt.swf, pptx.swf) from the list of this Nginx location? Thanks.

• Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• How to structure an application that combines WCF and WPF

  I'm in the process of learning how to use WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) to allow a client/server desktop application to communicate. The application's UI will be implemented using WPF, and we will probably use SQL Server for our database. What I'm struggling with, is understanding how to structure such an application. From what I've read, there are three components of a WCF application (which in the examples I've seen have existed as separate projects): A WCF service A WCF service host A WCF service client My question then, is - should these projects solely implement the functionality of sending/receiving data from the client/server? Would it make better sense this way? Would it make sense to create a separate WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) project to implement the UI for the application? And so, when I need to send/receive data from the client/server, I could simply invoke the operations provided in the WCF projects that I have created? For anyone who has built similar applications previously, perhaps you could explain what worked best for you in terms of structuring your application? For example, if I create a user registration page. When the user clicks the 'Register' button, the client application will need to send the data to the server. In this case, could I just invoke the methods provided in the WCF projects to send the data? Also, what data structures worked best for you when sending/receiving data? My initial thought is sending/receiving XML containing the data. Is this an option that is easy to implement? I realise that answers to this question may well be a matter of opinion - unless there are specific best practices that I'm not aware of. Thank you

  So, I've got a mandate to make our aged trillion lined Delphi app web based and it needs to make heavy use of the <canvas> element (HTML5 compatibility doesn't seem to be a big issue since we can just make our clients use a compatible browser the way we'd make them use a compatible version of Windows in the win32 environment). The Delphi app in question is almost completely database driven and will still pretty much continue to be developed as the main product. What I am tasked with is pretty much recreating a scaled down version of the program that performs the major functions of the whole program. I couldn't find any frameworks that simulate windows forms using the canvas element, I'm assuming this is probably by design since it is easier just to use HTML, well, be that as it may, I still think it would be cool to have a few of my cool controls on the web (TRichView and TVirtualTree, etc...) So my question is, to anyone who has tried this before, A.) What can we use for an IDE to code this web app (I just use emacs, but no one else in my company does)? B.) Is it a good idea to mix PHP and Processing.JS? It seems like I'm using a lot of AJAX to get anything to happen. 3 calls just for one dialog box to pop up, Loads the HTML for the dialog, Loads the XML to populate the database info on the form Loads the processing.js PJS file which draws the database info to the canvas. Is three a lot, do people usually combine all their gets into one?

• Dapper and object validation/business rules enforcement

  This isn't really Dapper-specific, actually, as it relates to any XML-serializeable object.. but it came up when I was storing an object using Dapper. Anyways, say I have a user class. Normally, I'd do something like this: class User { public string SIN {get; private set;} public string DisplayName {get;set;} public User(string sin) { if (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(sin)) throw new ArgumentException("SIN must be specified"); this.SIN = sin; } } Since a SIN is required, I'd just create a constructor with a sin parameter, and make it read-only. However, with a Dapper (and probably any other ORM), I need to provide a parameterless constructor, and make all properties writeable. So now I have this: class User: IValidatableObject { public int Id { get; set; } public string SIN { get; set; } public string DisplayName { get; set; } public IEnumerable<ValidationResult> Validate(ValidationContext validationContext) { // implementation } } This seems.. can't really pick the word, a bad smell? A) I'm allowing to change properties that should not be changed ever after an object has been created (SIN, userid) B) Now I have to implement IValidatableObject or something like that to test those properties before updating them to db. So how do you go about it ?

  This release adds a great new feature and fixes a few bugs. The new feature called Window Content History saves the whole text in all all opened SQL windows every N minutes with the default being 30 minutes. This feature fixes the shortcoming of the Query Execution History which is saved only when the query is run. If you're working on a large script and never execute it, the existing Query Execution History wouldn't save it. By contrast the Window Content History saves everything in a .sql file so you can even open it in your SSMS. The Query Execution History and Window Content History files are correlated by the same directory and file name so when you search through the Query Execution History you get to see the whole saved Window Content History for that query. Because Window Content History saves data in simple searchable .sql files there isn't a special search editor built in. It is turned ON by default but despite the built in optimizations for space minimization, be careful to not let it fill your disk. You can see how it looks in the pictures in the feature list. The fixed bugs are: SSMS 2008 R2 slowness reported by few people. An object explorer context menu bug where it showed multiple SSMS Tools entries and showed wrong entries for a node. A datagrid bug in SQL snippets. Ability to read illegal XML characters from log files. Fixed the upper limit bug of a saved history text to 5 MB. A bug when searching through result sets prevents search. A bug with Text formatting erroring out for certain scripts. A bug with finding servers where it would return null even though servers existed. Run custom scripts objects had a bug where |SchemaName| didn't display the correct table schema for columns. • Designing a Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

• CruiseControl.Net - not able to see Project Statistics

  Hi all, I've made a reinstallation of the buildserver and can no longer see the standard graphs of project statistics. The error message shown is "Missing/Invalid statistics reports. Please check if you have enabled the Statistics Publisher, and statistics have been collected atleast once after that." To the best of my knowledge, the ccnet.config file has not been changed in this respect and by inspection it is verified that I have a Statistics / statisticsList-section for the project. Furthermore, the values appear in the Artifacts\statistics.csv and Artifacts\report.xml files. My guess would then be StatisticsGraph.xslt, which I have copied fresh from distribution to both Server\xlst and WebDashboard\xslt (why are they located in both places, by the way!?). Rebuild and check - still same error message. Any hints to how to debug this would be appreciated!

• Best practice with branching source code and application lifecycle

  We are a small ISV shop and we usually ship a new version of our products every month. We use Subversion as our code repository and Visual Studio 2010 as our IDE. I am aware a lot of people are advocating Mercurial and other distributed source control systems but at this point I do not see how we could benefit from these, but I might be wrong. Our main problem is how to keep branches and main trunk in sync. Here is how we do things today: Release new version (automatically create a tag in Subversion) Continue working on the main trunk that will be released next month And the cycle repeats every month and works perfectly. The problem arises when an urgent service release needs to be released. We cannot release it from the main trunk (2) as it is under heavy development and it is not stable enough to be released urgently. In such case we do the following: Create a branch from the tag we created in step (1) Bug fix Test and release Push the change back to main trunk (if applicable) Our biggest problem is merging these two (branch with main). In most cases we cannot rely on automatic merging because e.g.: a lot of changes has been made to main trunk merging complex files (like Visual Studio XML files etc.) does not work very well another developer / team made changes you do not understand and you cannot just merge it So what you think is the best practice to keep these two different versions (branch and main) in sync. What do you do?

• Transient VO : Powerful J2EE Design Pattern

  We had a use-case wherein, the communication has to happen between regions residing under differenet taskfows. Essentially, they had a common set of parameters to be used. Initially, we resorted to the  use of pageFlowScope variables, but they are tightly coupled with the individual task flows. So, how the communication has to happen..?Some of the alternatives that we brainstormed into are - 1.usage of adf contextual event - This is a powerful feature indeed for such use-cases, but there is a considerable cost involved with it. So, before resorting to it, you have to make sure that you have good enough reason to use it.It actually does a server roundtrip and also the issue of an event and listening part to it is also something which requires your attention !!2.Use a transientVO with shared data control scope - with shared data control scope, the transient VO rows would be persistent across the task flows in your application. All you have to do is to create the attributes in the transientVO(prefereably with the same names - for the ease of conversion) and create some utility methods in VOImpl for creating row, updating row and deleting a row. You also have to make sure that the vo row is initialized per http request( this you can do in a bookmark method of your index.jspx - residing in adfc-config.xml), else the ui fields binded to the transient vo attributes won't render in UI.Hope, this helps and this should be a common use-case across apps.

• How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

  For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff. • Programming as a minor

  Hello Everyone! I've never asked a question here at programmers, and for reasons which will become obvious later I've never answered one here, but I do poke around in short bursts. Anyway, I'm 15 right now, and I've been programming in C++ for 4 years, just working on my own projects that are aim so high as to never be finished. I've been working on a single project for the last year, and every 3 months, I add a new system into it. It might be a value tabling directory enabled log system, or a render system, or a class to load up xml files, whatever it is, I don't mind too much that the overall project (a 3d engine) isn't ever going to get finished, I just get some satisfaction from getting what I have done building and running. I don't know what I want to do when I grow up, although I suspect I'll go into some form of engineering, but I was interested in knowing if I do choose to go into a career as a developer, what kind of material I could look at to push myself up and get myself experience that might help my career later. I'm not talking about books in particular, I'm more interested in subjects areas that will get me access to good job opportunities, or that will give me a hand-up if I do computer science and software related courses at uni. One of the things I was thinking of doing was designing some of the logic gate components of a small computer - which I started briefly over the holidays, working out integer addition, subtraction and multiplication. That kind of stuff interests me, but is it really useful - or more useful then just more programming? But anyway, Any advice? Should I continue on my perpetual 3d engine? Are there any other projects or particular accomplishments that would help my education? Perhaps I should mention that I live in Perth, Australia, so local software companies are likely to be more scarce then usual.

• Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• Testing Tomcat with Virtual Hosts

  I'm trying to test Tomcat virtual hosts on my dev machine (windows 7/Tomcat 6). I'd like to have requests for localhost, test1.localhost and test2.localhost all route through to the same tomcat instance. I've edited my hosts file to look as follows: 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1 test1.localhost 127.0.0.1 test2.localhost And added modified the Engine in server.xml as follows: <Engine defaultHost="localhost" name="Catalina"> <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm" resourceName="UserDatabase" /> <Host appBase="webapps" autoDeploy="true" name="localhost" unpackWARs="true" xmlNamespaceAware="false" xmlValidation="false"> <Alias>test1.localhost</Alias> <Alias>test2.localhost</Alias> </Host> </Engine> However, I'm getting a 404 when hitting test1.localhost:8080/myWebApp, although localhost:8080/myWebApp works fine. I can ping test1.localhost fine. What have I missed?
