    Hi, in C if I have a printf statement containing say "%.2f", it says that the precision is 2 digits after the decimal place. I haven't explicitly specify the width. I have two questions: Is this good programming practice?; Is without specifying the width means that the width of the field will get adjusted automatically when printing the number, irrespective of the number of digits it contains?     I use Solr in my website, and now I am about to configure my VPS account. I am at the stage where I need to install java in order to make Solr work. Now, I only plan on running solr, and using it as it is (I have no java programming skills at all), so my Q is, do I need the entire JDK which includes JRE, or is JRE enough?     I do not know much about Haskell, but from what I have read about the mutability of computations (e.g: functions returning functions, complex monads and functions, etc.) it seems like you can do a lot of meta-programming, even at runtime. How can Haskell, if everything like functions and monads are so complex, compile to machine code and retain all this?

  • conditional beginReceive

    I am writing a client program that uses Sockets. I would like the client to receive asyncronously UNLESS it is expecting a response, in which case I would like to receive syncronously. My current problem is that because I have to make a call to socket.BeginReceive which waits until there's data on the buffer, the async call always happens prior to the sync call.. How could I temporarily stop BeginReceive from executing? Is there a way to call EndReceive and then once I am done receiving syncronously, I can continue to receive asnycronously?

  • Converting byte[] of binary fixed point to floating point value?

    I'm reading some data over a socket. The integral data types are no trouble, the System.BitConverter methods are correctly handling the conversion. (So there are no Endian issues to worry about, I think?) However, BitConverter.ToDouble isn't working for the floating point parts of the data...the source specification is a bit low level for me, but talks about a binary fixed point representation with a positive byte offset in the more significant direction and negative byte offset in the less significant direction. Most of the research I've done has been aimed at C++ or a full fixed-point library handling sines and cosines, which sounds like overkill for this problem. Could someone please help me with a C# function to produce a float from 8 bytes of a byte array with, say, a -3 byte offset?

    The question says it all really, I'm looking for book recommendations, video tutorials etc. I've been programming since I was about six so I don't need a book that spends 4 pages on for loops (thought that might be a Bad example in terms of javascript). Also I'm learning ASP.net at the moment so anything on interoperability features/issues would be welcome, though I'm guessing I just showed my ignorance with that question.

  • .NET DB Query Without Allocations?

    I have been given the task of re-writing some libraries written in C# so that there are no allocations once startup is completed. I just got to one project that does some DB queries over an OdbcConnection every 30 seconds. I've always just used .ExecuteReader() which creates an OdbcDataReader. Is there any pattern (like the SocketAsyncEventArgs socket pattern) that lets you re-use your own OdbcDataReader? Or some other clever way to avoid allocations? I haven't bothered to learn LINQ since all the dbs at work are Oracle based and the last I checked, there was no official Linq To Oracle provider. But if there's a way to do this in Linq, I could use one of the third-party ones.

  • Close TCP port 80 and 443 after forking in Django

    I am trying to fork() and exec() a new python script process from within a Django app that is running in apache2/WSGI Python. The new python process is daemonized so that it doesn't hold any association to apache2, but I know the HTTP ports are still open. The new process kills apache2, but as a result the new python process now holds port 80 and 443 open, and I don't want this. How do I close port 80 and 443 from within the new python process? Is there a way to gain access to the socket handle descriptors so they can be closed?
