• How do I boot a virtual machine image from my network?

  I have many machines which require the same configurations. My goal is to boot them all from the network and load a virtual machine. It would be wonderful to have one image for all of our customer service machines. That way, I could load the virtual image, perform updates, and know the next time they boot up they will have all the changes. Ideally, the machines would store the image locally and only download a new image if there has been a change. With all the information out there on "desktop virtualization", "PXE booting", and "virtual machines", I feel lost. I have been reading for hours and feel like I have only just scratched the surface. I would like to do this using open source or free software. Any suggestions?

• Random users randomly being unable to connect to my static content domain

  I store all of my images, js, and css files on a separate domain to try and speed up page load times (it isn't a CDN, just a separate domain on the same server). This works fine for 99% of the users, 99% of the time. However, there are users that randomly are unable to connect to the static content domain for periods of 1-5 hours. They can go to the main site, but no images will load and everything is just white because no css is being loaded. If they go to the static content domain itself, the page just idles for a while and then times out with a blank white page, no error messages. I have no idea what could be causing this, and it hasn't happened to me, any ideas? I am running Apache on CentOS 5.5.

• Killing Mysql prcoesses staying in sleep command.

  Hey I am connecting a MYSQL database through hibernate and i seem to have processes that are not being killed after they are finished in the session. I have called flush and close on each session but when i check the server the last processes are still there with a sleep command. This is a new problem which i am having and was not the case yesterday. Is there any way i can ensure the killng of theses processes when i am done with a session. • I can't remove a background image in Powerpoint 2007

  Hello Everyone! I have a Powerpoint 2007 document. There is this annoying background graphic in my Powerpoint slide. I know about slide master, but this little bugger is not something that I can delete from slide master. Argh!!!!   Wonder if there is a parameter I can pass in mmysqldump equivalent for SQL Servery mysqldump that will make the incorrect "DROP TABLE IF EXISTS" statements into "DROP VIEW IF EXISTS", so that populating a database in an automated development environment refresh will work? Clarification, I'm getting DROP TABLE IF EXISTS statements in my .sql dump file even though they aren't tables. FYI: This is a Drupal site. The tables in question are ubercart meta statistics tables.

  i got an email from google a couple of hours ago (around 12AM EST today) that Google's TiSP service is now available in my area. this seems like a great deal compared to my cUrrent 16Mbps cable coNction at work, however i'm a lIttle nervous about the fact that linux support is "Coming soon". i was wOndering if anyone had successfully installed this system and gotten it woRking with their linux infrastructure?   I'm running Ubuntu 12.04's packaged Jetty in which I installed solr 4.3.1 (by copying the war file to /var/lib/jetty/webapps. When I start Jetty, I get this error: failed SolrRequestFilter: org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Could not find necessary SLF4j logging jars. If using Jetty, the SLF4j logging jars need to go in the jetty lib/ext directory.   Currently I am watching the live auth.log and someone is continuously trying the brute force attack for 10 hours. Its my local server so no need to worry but I want to test. I have installed denyhosts. There is already an entry for that IP address in hosts.deny. But still he is trying the attacks from same IP. System is not blocking that. Firstly I don't know how did that IP address get entered in that file. • What's the fastest and automatic way to transfer 2GB of data between 2 PCs every night?

  While it's fast (less than 2 minutes) I hate having to copy files from PC #1 onto a USB stick, and then manually popping it in PC #2 to copy the files to PC #2. Dropbox is too slow in uploading and then downloading 2GBs (synching), it could take hours. Copying 2GBs over the network is also slow because we're dealing with 10,000 little files that totals 2GBs, and not just one, giant 2gb file. Not sure why, but dealing with 10,000 little files makes the copy process much longer. Is there any other method that I'm missing? Any ideas? I'm using Win7 on both PCs. Edit: These files change every single night.

• Measuring cumulative network statistics per user or per process

  I've been googling for hours -- Under Linux I want to know the cumulative bytes sent and received by user or by process over all ip protocols. The best I've found in my searches is that it's possible to use iptables to mark packets for a user, for example: iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m owner --uid-owner test -j MARK --set-mark 1 It appears that "tc" can then shape traffic with that but I just want the statistic -- I don't want to shape the traffic. I want something like: "user U has transmitted used XMB since time Y". I can't figure out how to get statistics from these marked packets. Also, I've looked at nethogs but they seem to be measuring the instantaneous flow and I need cumulative counts. Anyone have ideas?

• Getting spurious undo (ctrl-z) sent randomly on a Dell Laptop

  For the past couple of weeks, my laptop has had a strange problem where it looks like ctrl-z is pressed, so I usually lose bits of text I just typed. If I press ctrl-shit-z (redo), the text comes back, proving it's really as if ctrl-z was pressed. It's difficult to see a pattern, I can be undo-free for hours, then get a few within minutes, sometimes 2-3 undoes at a time. Very frustrating! Running WinXP+SP3 on Dell Latitude D820, Clamwin antivirus. I've tried another keyboard, no difference. Any clue on what this could be, or how I could trace this problem? 2009-09-25: Tried a few things that were listed or linked to on this page: http://www.selfishman.net/2008/06/24/problem-with-dell-inspiron-1501-keypress-every-second/ but nothing helped. Though it seems to point at a Dell laptop issue. I upgraded the BIOS and other drivers, but still got the problem.

• How to get Hyper-V to recognize that a VM isn't stopping, it's stopped.

  I have a Hyper-V virtual machine that has some problems. First, its settings are apparently corrupt: The WMI object contained an invalid value in property BIOSNumLock. The WMI object contained an invalid value in property AutomaticStartupAction. Second, I saw something that implied that I could toggle the NumLock checkbox on the BIOS property page to fix the first problem, but the checkbox didn't show up. So I connected to the VM and shut it down. Now (many hours later) Hyper-V claims that the VM is "Stopping". However, when I follow the interweb's directions on forcing a VM offline (i.e. find vmwp and kill it), I can't find vmwp. The VM's WMI object has a PID that doesn't exist, and none of the vmwp processes have this machine's GUID. So, how do I trick Hyper-V into seeing that the machine is offline (or letting me delete it)?

• Handling exceptions raised in observers

  I have a Rails (2.3.5) application where there are many groups, and each Group has_many People. I have a Group edit form where users can create new people. When a new person is created, they are sent an email (the email address is user entered on the form). This is accomplished with an observer on the Person model. The problem comes when ActionMailer throws an exception - for example if the domain does not exist. Clearly that cannot be weeded out with a validation. There would seem to be 2 ways to deal with this: A begin...rescue...end block in the observer around the mailer. The problem with this is that the only way to pass any feedback to the user would be to set a global variable - as the observer is out of the MVC flow, I can't even set a flash[:error] there. A rescue_from in the Groups controller. This works fine, but has 2 problems. Firstly, there is no way to know which person threw the exception (all I can get is the 503 exception, no way to know which person caused the problem). This would be useful information to be able to pass back to the user - at the moment, there is no way for me to let them know which email address is the problem - at the moment, I just have to chuck the lot back at them, and issue an unhelpful message saying that one of them is not correct. Secondly (and to a certain extent this make the first point moot) it seems that it is necessary to call a render in the rescue_from, or it dies with a rather bizarre "can't convert Array into String" error from webbrick, with no stack trace & nothing in the log. Thus, I have to throw it back to the user when I come across the first error and have to stop processing the rest of the emails. Neither of the solutions are optimal. It would seem that the only way to get Rails to do what I want is option 1, and loathsome global variables. This would also rely on Rails being single threaded. Can anyone suggest a better solution to this problem?
