• Stream audio to mobile device

  I'd like to stream the audio from Ubuntu 10.10 to my HTC Desire HD (Android 2.2). I've seen solutions so far for streaming from audio players, but I'd like to stream any audio output from the PC to my phone. My use case is for watching TV/Films in VLC or online (BBC iPlayer) in bed, without having to use my surround sound system which is likely to wake up my house mates. I'm not just talking about music from Banshee, but any audio that the system makes. I was thinking that PulseAudio is pretty powerful, is it possible to route audio through that to a mobile device? Can it be done through bluetooth? Cheers in advance!

• How can I install the latest version of libmtp?

  In the latest version of the libmtp library there are fixes for my Android device so I would like to install the latest version I'm just not sure how! I would assume that this would pushed into the official repositories at some point, so the smart advice would probably be just to wait, but I would like to know how to do this myself if anyone could tell me. I'm currently using Ubuntu 12.04 and am running libmtp-1.1.2, the latest version (libmtp-1.1.3) has recently been released and the tar.gz file is downloadable from this direct link: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/libmtp/libmtp/1.1.3/libmtp-1.1.3.tar.gz How do I install this? If it is relevant, I am a Scala developer, not a Java one, although I know Java just fine. I would like something that allowed me to read JVM bytecode and answer questions such as: Why does the bytecode has to know about high level construct such as classes? Are subtyping relations still visible in bytecode? How does type erasure work exactly? How do Oracle and Dalvik bytecode differ, and what consequences does this have for, say, developing Android apps with Scala? How does the JVM manage the stack, and why exactly this creates issues with tail call elimination? and so on.

• In which object should I implement wait()/notify()?

  I'm working in an Android project with multithreading. Basically I have to wait to the server to respond before sending more data. The data sending task is delimited by the flag boolean hasServerResponded so the Thread will loop infinitely without doing anything until the flag becomes true. Since this boolean isn't declared as volatile (yet), and also looping without doing anything wastes resources, I thought maybe I should use AtomicBoolean and also implement wait() / notify() mechanism. Should I use the AtomicBoolean object notify() and wait() methods or should I create a lock Object?

• What has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel?

  This question is similar to this one: What unique enhancements and features has Ubuntu brought to the Linux Community but in this case it is directed towards what has Ubuntu contributed to the official Linux Kernel. For example, many times I hear about Intel contributing to patches for the Linux Kernel like the RC6 latest patches and any other related to the recent Sandy/Ivy Bridges. In another group, Android did an upstream patch and a lot of ARM patches have also come to the Linux Kernel. I have seeing only a small percent of companies and groups that have contributed to the Linux Kernel (http://kernel.org) but I want to know, since the beginning of Ubuntu till now, what has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel in regards to any aspect of the kernel. For Kernel information I typically go to http://kernelnewbies.org and http://kernel.org

• Developing OpenGLES2 apps for Ubuntu Software Center

  I have a game for iOS and Android that I now want to port to Ubuntu. I plan to distribute it with Ubuntu Software Center. Preferrably for free with an in-app-purchase. My codebase is currently based on OpenGL ES2 and written in C++. I could rewrite to OpenGL, but having progammable shaders is a must. Fixed pipeline OpenGL will not suffice. Is there a feature in place that lets you specify OpenGL requirements in the Ubuntu Software Center? I want to make sure that only Ubuntu users with compatible hardware will be able to download my game. Any APIs I could use for getting a suitable OpenGL context, or am I expected to just use glx for this? Or is the use of GTK mandatory?

• What are my tool options to prototype a 2D online multiplayer game?

It's extremely likely that this game will require a server side program to constantly run. I have little experience with these things and since it's a prototype i'd like the easiest options for achieving this. I am looking to make this game for the web and mobile devices, although at present I only have access to ios hardware, (no android etc). I just want to get the bare bones of this set up so I can test it from the earliest opportunity to see if it's fun. EDIT - doesn't unity have some inbuilt networking stuff in it?

• Beggining OpenGL vs beggining DirectX and some question about the philosophical difference between them

  I'm begginning with Direct X at school, and my teacher said it was harder to begin with than OpenGL, but I read several things that in fact, Direct X was more advanced than OpenGL in terms of recent graphic cards features. Since I'm far from wanting to do top notch effects, which can already be implemented with existing engines and/or shaders, I wanted to know your opinion: Can OpenGL be considered like a more basic, KISS, hardware agnostic, graphic library to just do 3D with acceleration, and consider DirectX like a top notch, game-oriented graphic API that will always support the next-gen 3D chips ? Citation from wikipedia on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_5 : John Carmack mentioned in his keynote at QuakeCon 2007 that the id Tech 5 engine will not be using the DirectX 10 API. I don't want to seem like I'm minding open source because Carmack does and because he is famous, it's just that android and iPhone are out there, and Direct X doesn't seems to me to be the necessary API to know, since Windows supports OpenGL, and since the 360 is just a console among other consoles.
