• Is there any modern command-line based text editor?

  A command line in a text editor is a wonderful feature. It allows the user to explore the editor's functionality and learn it's shortcuts in a textual way. It's much faster than using the mouse, and it is much easier to memorise "shortcuts" this way. Emacs and VI provide this, though, emacs and vi are not "modern". By "modern", I mean one that is original built to cope with the modern de-facto standards of selecting, copying, pasting, cutting, undoing, redoing and auto-completing. Cream/vi or EmacsCUE are not valid options, since there are loads of things built over them that conflict with the mentioned stuff. Is there any alternative?

• Java 2D clip area to shape

  I'm quite new to graphics in java and I'm trying to create a shape that clips to the bottom of another shape. Here is an example of what I'm trying to achieve: Where the white line at the base of the shape is the sort of clipped within the round edges. The current way I am doing this is like so: g2.setColor(gray); Shape shape = getShape(); //round rectangle g2.fill(shape); Rectangle rect = new Rectangle(shape.getBounds().x, shape.getBounds().y, width, height - 3); Area area = new Area(shape); area.subtract(new Area(rect)); g2.setColor(white); g2.fill(area); I'm still experimenting with the clip methods but I can't seem to get it right. Is this current method ok (performance wise, since the component repaints quite often) or is there a more efficient way? Thanks in advance.

This application read abc.properties file, Exception in thread "main" java.util.MissingResourceException: Can't find bundle for base name abc, locale en_US at java.util.ResourceBundle.throwMissingResourceException(ResourceBundle.java:853) at java.util.ResourceBundle.getBundleImpl(ResourceBundle.java:822) at java.util.ResourceBundle.getBundle(ResourceBundle.java:566) at com.ibm.dst.DailyExtract.getResourceBundle(DailyExtract.java:104) at com.ibm.dst.DailyExtract.main(DailyExtract.java:131) abc.properties file reside at the workspace.   I have a XSD simple type that should match UUIDs: <simpleType name="UuidT"> <restriction base="string"> <pattern value="[a-f0-9]{8}-[a-f0-9]{4}-[a-f0-9]{4}-[a-f0-9]{4}-[a-f0-9]{12}" /> </restriction> </simpleType> It correctly matches the following content: <!-- valid --> <Uuid>12345678-1234-5678-9012-123456789012</Uuid> But it doesn't match content that contains excess whitespace: <!-- not valid --> <Uuid> 2de25a81-b117-4b2a-b910-50f0878884f7 </Uuid> Sure, I could add \s* to both sides of the regex, but isn't there a simpler solution in XSD?

• Trying to right click on code in VS2008 causes lockup.

  Working on a Win32 DLL using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and, since yesterday, whenever I try to right click on code, to go to a variable definition for example, VS completely locks up and I have to manually kill the process. To make it even weirder, whenever this happens the devenv.exe process uses exactly 25% of the CPU. And I mean exactly, never 24%, never 26%, always 25% Also, I've run ProcMon to see if devenv is actually doing something, but it's doing absolutely nothing external of the process. No disk, network, registry access. Nothing. This is getting really aggravating because I have a large code base to deal with and the only other way of jumping to the definition is to first search for it. Has anyone run into a similar issue? And, better yet, know a fix?

• How to analyse contents of binary serialization stream?

  I'm using binary serialization (BinaryFormatter) as a temporary mechanism to store state information in a file for a relatively complex (game) object structure; the files are coming out much larger than I expect, and my data structure includes recursive references - so I'm wondering whether the BinaryFormatter is actually storing multiple copies of the same objects, or whether my basic "number of objects and values I should have" arithmentic is way off-base, or where else the excessive size is coming from. Searching on stack overflow I was able to find the specification for Microsoft's binary remoting format: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc236844(PROT.10).aspx What I can't find is any existing viewer that enables you to "peek" into the contents of a binaryformatter output file - get object counts and total bytes for different object types in the file, etc; I feel like this must be my "google-fu" failing me (what little I have) - can anyone help? This must have been done before, right??

  I'm having a very frustrating time creating a valid signature for Google's OAuth implementation. I have narrowed it all down to the fact that my signature-generation code has an error of some sort; what it is I have no idea.   How can I intercept submitted form input and modify it before it is bound to my model? For example, if I wanted to trim the whitespace from all text.   I am looking for a way to introspect SQLAlchemy ORM classes/entities to determine the types and other constraints (like maximum lengths) of an entity's properties.   I have this in lib/tasks/foo.rake: Rake::Task["assets:precompile"].enhance do print ">>>>>>>> hello from precompile" end Rake::Task["assets:precompile:nondigest"].enhance do print ">>>>>>>> hello from precompile:nondigest" end When I run rake assets:precompile locally, both messages are printed. When I push to heroku, only the nondigest message is printed. However, according to the buildpack, the push is executing the exact same command as I am locally. Why does the enhancement to the base assets:precompile case not work on heroku but does work locally?

• Django sys.path.append for project *and* app needed under WSGI

  Hi all, Could somebody give me a pointer on why I need to add my project root path to the python path as well as the application itself in my WSGI file? Project base is called 'djapp', the application is called 'myapp'. sys.path.append(os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__)) + '/..') sys.path.append(os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath(__file__)) + '/../djapp') os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = 'djapp.settings' If I omit the line with "/../djapp/" the log tells my that 'myapp' can not be imported, even though 'djapp.settings' is. (validating 'djapp' was imported) It al runs properly with the ./manage.py command. there's a __init__ in the project folder. For testings sake, I see the same issue using addsitedir: site.addsitedir('/home/user/web/project/') site.addsitedir('/home/user/web/project/djapp') Thanx a lot. Gerard.

• Diff tool that can compare sub-sections of files

  I'm looking for a diff tool that will allow me to compare just a sub-section of a file with a section of another file, or even of itself. Preferably eclipse based but will take all suggestions. Yes I know I can copy out the two sections into different files and compare those, but that is very tedious when you are trying to do a large amount of refactoring. Basically I'm trying to remove as much duplicated code as possible from a code base that is suffering from a great deal of ctrl-V 'inheritance' ;-) However the pasted parts have evolved apart a little over time.

• How can I utilize or mimic Application OnStart in an HttpModule?

  We are trying to remove the global.asax from our many web applications in favor of HttpModules that are in a common code base. This works really well for many application events such as BeginRequest and PostAuthentication, but there is no Application Start event exposed in the HttpModule. I can think of a couple of smelly ways to overcome this deficit. • Creating a new project from a project skeleton using git

  In order to get a new django project up and running faster, I'd like to maintain a separate "project skeleton" on which I base all my new projects. It would be great if, as I improved the skeleton, I could bring those improvements into my active projects. How can I accomplish this with git? So, maybe in my remote git repository machine I would have 1 repo for each project and one for the skeleton? proj-A-repo proj-B-repo skeleton-repo If I want to create a new proj-C locally based on the skeleton, then push my local changes up to the remote server in a new repo called proj-C-repo, how might I do this? I've read through quite a bit of git documentation, but I'm confused about how to go about this. Do I need to clone the skeleton, or create an empty repo and then track a remote branch, or something else?

  I'm looking for a very quick way to generate an alphanumeric unique id for a primary key in a table. Would something like this work? def genKey(): hash = hashlib.md5(RANDOM_NUMBER).digest().encode("base64") alnum_hash = re.sub(r'[^a-zA-Z0-9]', "", hash) return alnum_hash[:16] What would be a good way to generate random numbers? If I base it on microtime, I have to account for the possibility of several calls of genKey() at the same time from different instances. Or is there a better way to do all this? Thanks.

• What port is my SQL2008 instance running on?

  Check out this pic of my SQL 2008 Management Configuration screen for TCP: I need to know what port I am running on. Base on this previous post, I don't believe that it is 1433, which I guess is the default. When I check my port number in SQL Config Mgr., it is blank. Does this suggest a default port? Note that I have multiple SQL Server instance on the db server. 1 2000 instance and two 2008 instances. I want to know the port of the 2008b instance. Can you help?

• Excluding directories in Exuberant CTags

  I'm working with a very large code base and I find it useful to be selective about which directories are included for use with Exuberant Ctags. The --exclude option works well to eliminate individual file and directory names (with globing wildcards), but I can't figure out how to get it to exclude path patterns containing more than one directory. For example, I may want to exclude a directory tests, but only when processing thirdparty\tests (under Windows). The problem is if I just use --exclude=tests I exclude too many directories, including a test directory in the code I'm actively working on. Here are some things I've tried: --exclude=thirdparty\tests --exclude=thirdparty\\tests --exclude=*\thirdparty\tests --exclude=*\\thirdparty\\tests --exclude=thirdparty/tests Ctags silently ignores all these as evidenced by an examination of the tags file. How can I exclude a directory only when it is preceded by a given parent directory?

• Xap file contents changes if built in Visual Studio or build server

  I'm using MEF with my Silverlight 4 app to dynamically load xap files. To optimize this process, I've removed various assemblies from my xaps since I know they've already been loaded by the base xap. This reduces the size of my dynamically loaded xaps. I accomplished this by setting the "Copy Local" flag for each assembly reference to "false". This all seems to work fine when I build in Visual Studio 2010 - my xaps are much smaller. However, when the same projects are built by the build server, all the excluded references are once again in the xap file hence tripling the size of the xap. I've read several blogs/articles regarding similar experiences but no resolution. Very frustrating - any help is appreciated.
