• Ethernet on an Acer Aspire One D255E not working

  Ok very frustrated here, but hopefully can find an answer here. I have an Acer Aspire One netbook D255E. I installed 10.04 desktop edition via live USB, only to find out ethernet is not connecting. The thing is, I had installed previously 10.04 thru wubi as 30GB, but wanted more so did this install. With the Wubi install it worked great internet worked added LibO, mint menu ect. So I know it could work, and it works on Win 7(what little GB is left). I have ethernet enabled, and gave myself all permissions, but still not working. Thank you for any help, and if you do more details in the steps i need to take the better :).

• How to totaly remove blank screen screensaver?

  I have no screensaver installed but when I watch movies after a while blank screen comes and I have to get up every time and move mouse to continue watching the movie. It really pisses me off. I found this command "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver idle-activation-enabled false" which allegedly disables blank screen... I put that command in once, and blank screen keeps doing its crap. I did it again, blank screen still works on its own and would not stop. Did it trice, and nothing. Please someone help me with this, I'm freaking out when trying to watch a decent movie. I'd have to mention that I once had "xscreensaver" installed but I removed it after awhile. Don't know if it has something to do with blank screen still work, maybe some else would know. PLEASE HELP !

• USB-live does not save files between sessions

  I created a USB-stick with Ubuntu, using the recommended tool "Startup Disk Creator" and the image for Ubuntu 13.10. The very simple interface looks like this: There can't be much to misunderstand in this GUI. I have chosen to create a USB stick with a live version of Ubuntu, which will save files and settings from session to session, on the USB drive, right? Well, it just doesn't save anything. I go in, create a file on Desktop, restart and it's gone. I did the whole procedure three times, i.e. first creating the USB, then testing if I could save. Have I misunderstood something?

• Which Programming Languages Support the Following Features?

  My personal programming background is mainly in Java, with a little bit of Ruby, a tiny bit of Scheme, and most recently, due to some iOS development, Objective-C. In my move from Java to Objective-C I've really come to love some features that Objective-C has that Java doesn't. These include support for both static and dynamic typing, functional programming, and closures, which I'm trying to leverage in my code more often. Unfortunately there are trade-offs, including lack of support for generics and (on iOS at least) no garbage collection. These contrasts have lead me to start a search for some of the programming languages that support the following features: Object Oriented Functional Programming Support Closures Generics Support for both Static and Dynamic Typing Module Management to avoid classpath/dll hell Garbage Collection Available Decent IDE Support Admittedly some of these features(IDE support, Module Management) may not be specific to the language itself, but obviously influence the ease of development in the language. • Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

• Synchronizing (updating) published files

  How can I update a published file and maintain the same URL? After saving an update of a published file on my desktop, it will automatically "synchronise" with the corresponding files at UbuntuOne (and it does). Problem is that the "new file", actually the updated file with the same name, is no longer published. Pressing the publish button results is a new URL. I now have to mail new URL's and change embedded links, as old URL will result in a failure to find the updated file (or indeed any file). I am not sure if it is a bug or a design flaw (maybe intentional?), but it seems strange to me.

• Are you aware of any client-side malware that sends lots of junk requests for .gifs?

  I am getting dozens of 404 errors on my site that are requests for gif's with apparently random names, like 4273uaqa.gif and 5pwowlag.gif. I see that most of them are coming from one user. I assume something is happening in the background on her machine without her knowledge -- a malware thing on the client. Have you seen this behavior before, and do you know what sort of malware might cause it? Would love to advise my customer that s/he has an issue. I'd also like to stop getting these 404 reports. • Issues with web hosting at home

  I want to host a small personal website at home. One basic problem I am hitting is, From inside home network, I cannot access my domain name. I have to use the local ip (something like 192.168.1.4) to access the website. This ip is the desktop which is hosting the website. Because of this mapping, I have issues setting up a simple wordpress blog on it too. How do I get past this issue? edit:0 when I try to access www.example.com (my domain) from within my home network, I get redirected to my router login. PS: 1) I am using dyndns service to map my non-static ip to my domain name. 2) My portforwarding works fine.

• How is the iOS support in UDK compared to Unity?

  I have some significant experience in Unity for web clients, but I'm skeptical about the 3K$ price tag to create/deploy iOS games. I noticed UDK now supports iOS, and appears to have "free" version control- and it's only 100$ from what I can tell. My primary question is: Does UDK make iOS development and deployment easy, or do you have to jump through a couple of hoops to make it work? A few side questions not worth another post: How hard is the transition from Unity to UDK? Is UnrealScript easy to pick up from a C/C# background? Does the UDK have good documentation compared to Unity?

• Failed install 12.04 on Intel Hardware Raid with Large Partition (> 2TB)

  I have Intel Hardware Raid on the motherboard. I have 10 2 TB HDD that I've configured as RAID 1+0 to be one big 8 TB HDD. Now I'm trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on it. After installing with default desktop installation disk I get a blank screen with a cursor flashing. If I try the alternate guided partitioning option I get error: out of disk. and the grub prompt. If I boot with the rescue disk or such like I can drop into a shell and view the disk. Everything also installs without an issue. Don't know what to do...

• Unable to select iso file when making live usb with Yumi multi boot installer

  I am trying to make a Live USB of ubuntu 12.04 desktop. I did download it from the site. It shows that its a iso file. I am trying to browse it from multiboot installer(YUMI) but I don't know why Multiboot Installer is unable to detect it as it is a iso file. I tried renaming the file .iso. but nothing worked for me. Please help me I am stuck and frustrated. Trying to get things straight for hours.

  Is there an equivalent to the Max OS X software Hazel that runs on Ubuntu? "Hazel watches whatever folders you tell it to, automatically organizing your files according to the rules you create. It features a rule interface [..]. Have Hazel move files around based on name, date, type, what site/email address it came from [..] and much more. Automatically put your music in your Music folder, movies in Movies. Keep your downloads off the desktop and put them where they are supposed to be." This question probably won't make sense unless you have used Hazel, but basically you can define rules via the GUI to move and rename files automatically to make an automated workflow.

• Wlan connection got lost permanent

  I have a desktop with a fritz usb wlan n tick and tried ubuntu 12.04. installlation is fine and wlan is working, however connection drops permanent. reconnecting manually fixes it but after a few minutes it drops again. it's connected to a vodafone 802 box with wlan n fix set. it seems that it works when i switch off n mode...but i need to test. can someone confirm or is there another solution? i have another machine with 12.04 (hp 625 laptop) running where connection is stable. any help much appreciated. thank chris

I'm undoubtedly doing something silly here as the username and password and server name work fine in the first code snippet below, just not the second - any help would be appreciated!   I had the following issues with my Sony Vaio E14115's touchpad on Ubuntu 12.04: Right click not working Vertical scrolling not working Then I followed these steps to fix it: Downloaded a patch for Psmouse sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential cd ~/Desktop tar jxvf psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae.tar.bz2 sudo mv psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae /usr/src cd /usr/src sudo chmod -R a+rx psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms add -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms build -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms install -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse This fixed me the problems of Rightclick and vertical scrolling. But I still have an issue of not able to click and drag ie Clicking the leftmouse button and dragging with another finger. It doesn't move! Maybe it doesn't detect the 2nd finger. When I check the capabilities of my Synaptics touchpad by using xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"|grep Capabilities I get the following output: Synaptics Capabilities (304): 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 Please help me out.

• HTTP 303 redirection and robots.txt

  On a site I'm working on, we're using the HTTP 303 redirect pattern (see this article for background) to distinguish between information and non-information resources. So: some URL's under /id get redirected to dynamically-created pages under /doc. These dynamic pages are built from a database, and contain links to other /doc/ resources, so in general we don't want them to be crawled. Our robots.txt contains: Disallow: /doc However, we do want the non-redirected pages under /id to get indexed by Google et al: Allow: /id So the question I have, which I can't find an answer to so far, is: if an allowed /id page 303-redirects to a /doc page, will it still be blocked by robots.txt? If yes, we're OK, but otherwise I'm going to disallow all /id resources in the robots file, as having the crawler hammer the db would be worse than losing search indexing for the /id pages.

• How can I map the docky anchor button so that it will launch the unity dash?

  Example of a Docky Dock I have the Docky dock on my desktop. It has an anchor logo button (as seen on the left side image of the link above) that brings up the Docky settings. I want to map it so that it opens my dash instead. I believe I can do this through gconf and by setting the docky button to either my super key or the necessary path required to open the dash function (but I do not know this path or how to code a button to a keyboard key). How can I map the docky anchor button so that it will launch the unity dash (as similar to when you simply tap the super key)?

• Mouse permanently stuck on left side of screen

  One of my two monitors is died, so while my computer was turned off I unplugged the dead monitor then turned my computer back on. When I got to the log in page I typed my password and got to the desktop my mouse was stuck to the left edge of the screen. I can move it up and down, and left and right click, but it won't come off the edge. I tried switching the monitor cable to the other slot to see if that would make a difference but nothing changed. If it makes a difference, I'm using Kubuntu.

My background is entirely science/engineering/music/games/art/whatever. I've never set foot in the realm of business systems or anything describable with the word "enterprise". What is a good introduction to the whole ERP concept, OpenERP and business systems in general suitable for those with flat zero experience in that world? • Ubuntu 12.04 freezes on suspend hp folio 13

  I have ubuntu 12.04 running from a usb HDD on my hp folio 13. Everything is working, but at first the screen would only blacken when i closed the lid and didn't suspend. So, I followed this guide: https://github.com/deliciousrobots/ubuntu-hp-folio-13 after that, it sort of worked, but very unreliably. Now suspend doesn't even work and it always freeze. Usually the screen will turn black but I can still see my mouse. Sometimes my desktop background will show but the launcher wont be there or anything. Once I didn't have the menu bar on any windows or the top of the screen but the windows I had left open were still (sort of) responsive. Whats wrong? Help Thanks

• Login crash loop

  After about the second/third batch of updates on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, I end up getting stuck in an infinite login loop: I enter my password, screen goes black and shows me the end of the initialisation messages (including things like CUPS initialising), and then the greeter reappears. Kicker is, as I'm using gnome-shell, I just decided to uninstall LightDM, ubuntu-desktop and unity-greeter, using GDM as my manager, and the problem still happens in exactly the same manner. I'm lost even as to where to start looking - Xorg logs, LightDM logs (before I removed it), syslog and dmesg logs have held no unusual information at all. I have a TeX assignment due next week, and reinstalling Ubuntu every time I want to work on it is not going to work (nor is using TeX on Windows ;). Anything else I should try?
