  On windows 2000 and XP machines I used to be able to do the following: ntbackup backup systemstate c: /f e:\backups\machineName\machineName-full+systemstate_200101206.bkf This gave me a full backup of the system that I could use to do a system restore, after doing a barebones OS install. Windows 7 has a great utility for regular backups with alerting and all that stuff. It does not seem to have command line support. I'd like a backup solution for my Windwos 7 systems that has the following features: Is free Is open source (preferebly) Works while the system is booted and leaves the system functional (clonezilla is great for offline backups, and I use that too) Gives me a backup that is suited for a full system restore or partial system restore (ruling out most imaging software even if they could work while the system is booted via some sort of shadow copy voodoo) Can work via the command line Compression would be nice, the ability to pipe output would be better.

• How to disable VGA on new server... reversibly?

  Strange question here. I have a server with 1GB of RAM, however when booted this shows as 768MB. I've discovered the reason for it – and that is that it has an unboard graphics card which shares memory with main RAM. Running Ubuntu Server, it doesn't actually ever use anything graphical – it's all set up to be SSH'd into and therefore there's no need to use the VGA. I believe there may be a setting to switch off VGA/graphics card in BIOS, but my question to you guys is: is this recommended? and if I turn it off, then how would I turn it back on again in BIOS (given that with it off, I wouldn't be able to see the option to turn it on as there would be no graphics output!!)?

• How often is seq used in Haskell production code?

  I have some experience writing small tools in Haskell and I find it very intuitive to use, especially for writing filters (using interact) that process their standard input and pipe it to standard output. Recently I tried to use one such filter on a file that was about 10 times larger than usual and I got a Stack space overflow error. After doing some reading (e.g. here and here) I have identified two guidelines to save stack space (experienced Haskellers, please correct me if I write something that is not correct): Avoid recursive function calls that are not tail-recursive (this is valid for all functional languages that support tail-call optimization). Introduce seq to force early evaluation of sub-expressions so that expressions do not grow to large before they are reduced (this is specific to Haskell, or at least to languages using lazy evaluation). After introducing five or six seq calls in my code my tool runs smoothly again (also on the larger data). However, I find the original code was a bit more readable. Since I am not an experienced Haskell programmer I wanted to ask if introducing seq in this way is a common practice, and how often one will normally see seq in Haskell production code. Or are there any techniques that allow to avoid using seq too often and still use little stack space?

• Options for connecting an external disk to an old laptop

  I've tried connecting a 2.5" external drive to an old laptop which has only USB 1. The LED on the disk lights up, but the disk doesn't seem to spin up. Since the same disk works fine on a newer laptop my guess is that the old one doesn't output enough power on the USB port. Besides looking for an external drive with its own PSU, what would you suggest? Will one of those USB cables with two connectors work? What about a powered USB hub?

  I have a common git "post-receive" script for several projects, and it needs to perform different actions if an /app/ or /public/ folder exists in the root. Using: FOLDERS=`git ls-tree -d --name-only -z master`; I can see the directory listing, and I would like to use the RegExp support in bash to run something like: if [[ "$FOLDERS" =~ app ]]; then ... fi But that won't work if there was something like an "app lication" folder... I specified the "-z" option in the git "ls-tree" command so I could use the \0 (null) character as a separator, but not sure how to test for that in the bash RegExp. Likewise I know there is support for specifying a particular path in the ls-tree command, and could then pipe that to "wc -l", but I'd have thought it was quicker to get a full directory listing of the root (not recursive) then test for the 2 (or more) folders with the returned output. • Synergy 1.3.6 on Windows 7 Test not working

  So I have the client running, says perfectly connected to server when I run a test I run the same test on the server and it just says "running test. press stop to end test" and no output log file comes up like on the client. Then I stop the test it says synergy is about to quot with errors and warnings. Please check the log then click OK. Except for the log didnt come up and I don't know how to access the log from command prompt. And I'm pretty sure my thing is set up correct: section: links Joel-HP: left = JoelPC2 JoelPC2: right = Joel-HP end My Windows 7 64 bit server is on the right, Windows 7 32 bit client on left Both client and server are run as admin.

• Laptop runs HOT after 12.10 upgrade!

  I was running 12.04 for 6 months, my laptop ran almost silently and cool enough to hold on my lap. I updated to 12.10 and now my computer gets too hot to hold on my lap and the fan is constantly running on full blast. Edit 1: Per @Paul's suggestion, I ran htop to try to narrow down the problem. Here is the result! This is about 10 minutes after boot-up, htop, yakuake, and a chrome page with 1 tab opened to this question are all that I have manually opened. The most taxing program to the CPU is htop itself. I think that the problem must lie elsewhere; my temps are already up to ~65C for the CPU and ~69C for the GPU, with nearly 0% CPU usage.

  I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points. • java -version doesn't write to stdout?

  Hi there, Either I'm doing something silly or Sun is. How come something like: java -version > version.txt Still prints out to stdout and leaves version.txt empty? I'm checking out the exit code, and it's still 0, so is not that's writing to stderr. I need this because I'm building a test-environment tool and want to check if the version of Java is adequate, I was planning to catch that version output, but now I'm stuck. I'm on OS X Leopard, Java version 1.6.0_20. Any ideas? Cheers, Juan

• PHP Script causing high CPU

  I have a website which is causing me a major headache. There is one PHP script which is using far to much CPU, this only seem to happen when bots hit the site, I dont want to block all the bots because we need them. I have the the process manager output: Pid Owner Priority CPU % Memory % Command 16943 (Trace) (Kill) specialone 0 99.4 1.0 /usr/bin/php /var/www/specialone/page.php I ran strace -p 16943 on the process but it comes up with nothing. We have 2GB of RAM and the php memory_limit is set to 128M which should be enough. The trouble I have is the PHP code is a Framework and the culprit page.php pulls in a lot of other PHP files so I cant debug the PHP. Is there any way of finding out what the script is doing when its using so much CPU which will help me solve it?

I have installed asterisk on the pc I want to take calls on. • Unable to diagnose Windows 7 lockup

  Basic info: Laptop Dell Studio XPS 13 (Intel P9600, 4GB RAM, NVidia 9400M card, 256G Samsung PM800 SSD) Windows 7 Ultimate, as well as Fedora 14 Here's the deal - Windows would just lock up out of nowhere, no log entries, no dumps, no BSOD, it just freezes. This happens mostly when idle (but it happened when I was using it too) and does not follow a concrete time frame. No input is accepted - only solution is to hold the power button. Although this sounds like a clean cut hardware issue, the reason I'm willing to rule this out is that my primary OS is Fedora 14. It's been working fine for the past 2 years and I've been stress testing the hardware (intentionally or not) every once in a while with no issues. I would like to ask if there's any way to get a diagnostic output from Windows in a situation such as this. The next step in my testing is to leave it in Safe Mode overnight and see if it locks up but even if I do that, I still need to figure out what component freezes it up during normal operation.

• Is the development of CLI apps considered "backwards"?

  I am a DBA fledgling with a lot of experience in programming. I have developed several CLI, non interactive apps that solve some daily repetitive tasks or eliminate the human error from more complex albeit not so daily tasks. These tools are now part of our tool box. I find CLI apps are great because you can include them in an automated workflow. Also the Unix philosophy of doing a single thing but doing it well, and letting the output of a process be the input of another, is a great way of building a set of tools than would consolidate into an strategic advantage. My boss recently commented that developing CLI tools is "backwards", or constitutes a "regression". I told him I disagreed, because most CLI tools that exist now are not legacy but are live projects with improved versions being released all the time. Is this kind of development considered "backwards" in the market? Does it look bad on a rèsumè? I also considered all solutions whether they are web or desktop, should have command line, non-interactive options. Some people consider this a waste of programming resources. Is this goal a worthy one in a software project?

• Setting a wireless access point on Ubuntu server 11.10

  I am trying to setup a wifi access point with my Ubuntu server. I have managed to get my phone to connect the wireless and now it get a DHCP lease. Though it still cannot ping out or get pinged by anything on my network. I am prety sure my problem is iptables, but I not sure what would be wrong. Here is what my rules look like. (The ones pertaining to the bridge interface) # Allow traffic to / from wireless bridge interface iptables -A INPUT -i br0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -o br0 -j ACCEPT I am guessing my rules are a little lean, the bridge exists on the same subnet as everything else on my network, I am using a 10.0.0.0/24 subnet. EDIT Oh yeah I should mention also, when I do a ping test, I get Destination Host Unreachable as the error.

• How to split audio into multiple channels from optical S/PDIF or 1/8"?

  I have a motherboard which has an optical S/PDIF output or 1/8". I'd like to "split" that signal into the appropriate channels so that I can then connect that to the wires behind my car's headunit which, in turn, run to the amp. The factory Bose amp just takes a single connector with a million wires running out of it, so that's why I would need to separate the signal into separate channels. On the other end there are four RCA connectors: front left, front right, rear left, rear right. The sub-woofer signal does not require an additional connection.   I've recently installed SSMA on my computer and after connecting to both the Oracle instance (which holds the database to be converted) and the SQL Server. I've mapped the needed schemas from oracle to mssql. The problem is that when i click on the report button for the assessment report there's an error popping up: Assesment Error : Nothing to Process The output window states: Starting conversion... Analyzing metadata... Conversion finished with 0 errors, 0 warnings, and 0 informational messages. There is nothing to process. Has anyone got experience with SSMA. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Thank you.

• ATI Radeon HD with Catalyst driver stuck mirroring screens

  In 11.10 I replaced my aging Nvidia card with a new Radeon HD 6970 card. The single card has two DVI output ports which I've connected to two monitors. I installed Catalyst version 11.9 and I cannot get multiple monitors set up the way I want. I tried: $ sudo amdcccle and setting the mode to single desktop multiple monitors and whenever I do that Unity crashes and I get back to the login screen. Nothing shows up in the Xorg.*.log files for me to post here. There's only one card so I don't think xinerama would be any help here. Anyone have any ideas? • USB Keyboard doesn't work in Ubuntu 14.04

  My USB keyboard isn't working in Ubuntu 14.04, but also didn't work in 13.10. I upgraded today in the hope that the issue would be resolved, but it wasn't. The keyboard works in BIOS and GRUB but stops working when I reach the login screen. It is detected by the system, but just doesn't work.   Hello, We have several thousand 'contacts' setup in AD already for a faxing system. We're migrating to an online fax provider that uses e-mail rather than plain old telephone. So, we've bulk edited all the AD records so that the 'mail' attribute is populated with the right e-mail address in the right format. Now, how do we enable these contacts within Exchange 2007? I've looked through http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684891.aspx but that only seems to talk about manually editing the CSV output to specify the external addresses. AD already knows the external e-mail addresses - I just need the info in Exchange! Any thoughts?

Which is correct. mydomain does not have a /home/. Therefore it should never rewrite, atleast according to my understanding that all rewriterules are subject to rewriteconds as logical ANDs.
