• MVC 2 Conversion Disrupts the parameters passed to my Stored Procedure

  I have a few textboxes that are not required. If the user enters nothing it is passed as 'null' in MVC 2. It was passed as '""' in MVC 1. • Binding Linq To Entities query results to a datagridview

  I just started playing with Linq to entities in a windows forms application and am not understanding one behavior that looks so simple though. If i type code below, i get ReadOnly records in my dataGridView Dim x = From n in Table1 _ Select n.FirstName, n.LastName, N.Department DataGridView1.DataSource = x But if i type the following code, i get editable rows in my dataGridView Dim x = From n in Table1 _ Select n DataGridView1.DataSource = x So, basically if i specify the column names to select and databind to my DataGridView1, the rows are readonly but if i do not specify the column names and databind to the DataGridView, the rows are editable and i don't understand why.

• Adding childs to list of parents with jquery /mvc2

  Hi, I have a table of products on my page, each product has zero or more colors, the colors are shown as a list beneath the product. After the colors I have a button to add a color. The button will do an ajax call with the parent product id to a controller which will return a JSON object with color information. My problem is where to store the product id in the DOM, should I put it in a hidden field and use jquery in the click event of the "add color" to get to it? What is the best way to do this? TIA, John EDIT: The page is initially rendered on the server so I don't want to use jquery to add the id's to the page.

• Sqlite: CURRENT_TIMESTAMP is in GMT, not the timezone of the machine

  I have a sqlite (v3) table with this column definition: "timestamp" DATETIME DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP The server that this database lives on is in the CST time zone. When I insert into my table without including the timestamp column, sqlite automatically populates that field with the current timestamp in GMT, not CST. Is there a way to modify my insert statement to force the stored timestamp to be in CST? On the other hand, it is probably better to store it in GMT (in case the database gets moved to a different timezone, for example), so is there a way I can modify my select SQL to convert the stored timestamp to CST when I extract it from the table? • Throw a long list of exceptions vs throw an Exception vs throw custom exception?

  I have an application which uses two methods of an API. Both these methods throw more than five exceptions each. So, if I just add a throws declaration then it becomes a list of more than ten. (My method cannot handle any of the ten exceptions) I have read that throwing a long list of exceptions is a bad practice. Also throwing (the umbrella) Exception is a bad practice. So, what should I do? Add a try catch block, and log and exit in the catch block? (Current approach) Create a custom exception class, wrap every exception and throw the custom exception? Add a throws declaration for all exceptions? Throw Exception?

How do I have to setup my search in order for this to work so I get an exact match for the tag and value ?

If so, what type of exception? I have heard the phrase: "Only use exceptions in exceptional circumstances", but I want to tell the client implementing Album exactly what has gone wrong (not just return a Boolean value).

• php echo doesnt print newlines

  Hey ! I started doing a new project in PHP / MySql . The Aim of this project is to manage articles for a magazine that i am the editor of. So the content of the articles, i decided i would store with the "TEXT" column type of MySql Now when i retrieve this column and print it with echo, the newlines are not there. Its all on the same line. $resset = mysql_query("select txt from articles where id = 1"); $row = mysql_fetch_assoc($resset); $txt = $row['txt']; echo $txt; //doesnt print it as it is in the database as it was typed (multiline) Find below, the text as it looks in the database and as it looks when it is echoed But within the database, its stored with newlines. Has anybody else encountered this problem? Please help me as my project depends on this :|

• Unique identifiers for users

  If I have a table of a hundred users normally I would just set up an auto-increment userID column as the primary key. But if suddenly we have a million users or 5 million users then that becomes really difficult because I would want to start becoming more distributed in which case an auto-increment primary key would be useless as each node would be creating the same primary keys. Is the solution to this to use natural primary keys? I am having a real hard time thinking of a natural primary key for this bunch of users. The problem is they are all young people so they do not have national insurance numbers or any other unique identifier I can think of. I could create a multi-column primary key but there is still a chance, however miniscule of duplicates occurring. Does anyone know of a solution? Thanks

• How are integers converted to strings under the hood?

  I suppose the real question is how to convert base2/binary to base10. The most common application of this would probably be in creating strings for output: turning a chunk of binary numerical data into an array of characters. How exactly is this done? my guess: Seeing as there probably isn't a string predefined for each numerical value, I'm guessing that the computer goes through each bit of the integer from right to left, each time incrementing the appropriate values in the char array/base10 notation places. If we take the number 160 in binary (10100000), it would know that a 1 in the 8th place means 128, so it places 1 into the third column, 2 in the second, and 8 in the third. The 1 in the 6th column means 32, and it would add those values to the second and first place, carrying over if needed. After this it's an easy conversion to actual char codes.

  I am trying to automatically verify certain conventions, such as label/table column header text (Sentence Case, use of colons, etc). It would be nice if there was a way in FlexUnit, or other means, to Iterate over all views in the app Get all titles, labels, column headers Run some pattern checks and fail where needed. Does anyone have a suggestion on what the best way would be to achieve that? I suppose I could do this on a code level on the MXML files, but it would be nicer if it could be integrated into the overall unit test suits. Thanks for any suggestions

• GPO IE Favorites Adds Unwanted Folders

  I created a AD 2003 GPO to add a couple of the company's links to everyone's IE. I have the following: Checked: Place Favorites and Links at the Top of the List... Unchecked: Everything else Then: Favorites |-Company Link One |-Company Link Two Links However, the GPO seems to add Favorites Bar, Microsoft Websites, MSN Websites, and Windows Live folders. If they are deleted it seems to make them come back. Anyone know how to fix this?

  I need to get all our home content off individual machines and onto a central server. What I'd like to have is the metaphorical "server under the stairs". Stuff we need: expandable storage. I want to be able to add extra disc as we go along, with minimal maintenance required. Currently we've got about 3Tb of files we need to host, and that's likely to grow by another Tb every 6-12 months based on recent history. I need to be able to add additional disc with minimal pain needs to store all the media (i.e. photos, video, music) we have, and run services to serve the various devices we have in the house to playback (e.g. DAAP so we can play stuff through iTunes, ccxstream so we can play stuff over XBMC). DAAP and ccxstream are needed now, but we also need to support new standards as they emerge (so a closed-box solution isn't going to work) RAID 5, or something broadly equivalent (e.g. RAID-Z) BitTorrent client ssh, NFS, Samba access snapshot capability (as in ZFS), so we can snapshot individual file systems regularly and rollback when my kids delete their school assignments the day before they're due... ability to recover quickly from power outages (it's not unusual for us to have power outages that last longer than our UPS' batteries) FOSS software a modern distributed version control system running on the box, such as Mercurial Stuff I'd like to have on the server, but can live without: PVR capability, so I could record TV to the box Web server. We currently run a small Web server on a very old box, and I'd ideally like to turn the old box off and move the content to the new server just to save some electricity Nagios + mrtg I've been looking at using a EEE Box as the server, primarily because I can get them cheap and they don't consume much power. • NHibernate mapping one table on two classes with where selection

  We would like to map a single table on two classes with NHibernate. The mapping has to be dynamically depending on the value of a column. Here's a simple example to make it a bit clearer: We have a table called Person with the columns id, Name and Sex. The data from this table should be mapped either on the class Male or on the class Female depending on the value of the column Sex. In Pseudocode: create instance of Male with data from table Person where Person.Sex = 'm'; create instance of Female with data from table Person where Person.Sex = 'f'; The benefit is we have strongly typed domain models and can later avoid switch statements. Is this possible with NHibernate or do we have to map the Person table into a flat Person class first? Then afterwards we would have to use a custom factory method that takes a flat Person instance and returns a Female or Male instance. Would be good if NHibernate (or another library) can handle this.

• T-SQL Re-Assigning Order Numbering

  Say I have a table with a field called "ordernum" that denotes the order of a given set of rows. Now imagine that I delete one of these rows. What type of query would work best for re-assigning the order numbers so that they remain sequential? Here's an example: id group_id name ordernum active --------------------------------------------------- 0_____0______'Name1'___5__true 1_____0______'Name2'___4__true 2_____0______'Name3'___3__true 3_____1______'Name4'___2__true 4_____1______'Name5'__1__true 5_____1______'Name6'__NULL___false Now if I deleted the column with id='4' how would I reset the values in the 'ordernum' field for that specific group? Is this even possible? Or if I added a new row. (The first time the rows are created they are sorted by date, but then the user has the option to set the order himself.) In my table design I have a column 'active' boolean. If 'active' is set to false, then 'ordernum' is set to NULL. Otherwise it should be given an order number.

• how do arguments work with dojo.connect?

  I've read the docs, but I must be missing something. I've got a grid, I want to connect to the event that fires when the column headers are clicked for sorting, thus: dojo.addOnLoad(function(){ var grid = dijit.byId("grid"); dojo.connect(grid, "setSortInfo", 'afterSort'); }); function afterSort() { console.info('after sort'); } That works fine as far as it goes. I know the setSortInfo method has an argument which is the column number. How do I get that value? I've tried putting a parameter in the sig for afterSort to no avail. The docs say "the method receives the same arguments as the event", but where are they???
