I have three objects; Action, Issue and Risk. These all contain a nunber of common variables/attributes (for example: Description, title, Due date, Raised by etc.) and some specific fields (risk has probability). The question is: Should I create 3 separate classes Action, Risk and Issue each containing the repeat fields. Create a parent class "Abstract_Item" containing these fields and operations on them and then have Action, Risk and Issue subclass Abstract_Item. This would adhere to DRY principal.

Unix RPC programming

Heyy all, I needed some help with ONC RPC programming. My task is to create two-tier client-server architecture wherein one main server (something like a directory) keeps a track of level-two servers and acts as a lookup; the level-two servers exposing some trivial functions, and finally, the clients for level-two servers. The clients ask the directory where a server is located, and then communicate with it. Using RPCGEN, we can create a pair of client-server code; however, the clients in this case need to have stubs for the directory as well as the level-two functions. Being a newbie to RPC, I'm having trouble conceptualizing the way I should code this. How can I call a function from a different server if a client is generated using a different IDL ? Any pointers would be appreciated :) Regards, Abhi

Java .doc generation

Hi, anyone knows an easy method to generate mail merge .doc file from Java? So, I want to create a Word (95/97) document in Word, put some simple placeholders in it (only single value, no iterators and other advanced tags) like the ones used with mailmerge option, and then at runtime replace those placeholders with values from Java. One option is to use Jasperreports, but this would require that I create exact replica of non-trivial Word document in Jasper format, which is not easy and is hard to change later. Is there some method of filling placeholders in Word from Java, which does not require low-level document alteration with positioning and others low-level .doc tags from code, but something like this: docPreparer.fillPlaceholder('placeholder1', 'my real value from runtime'); Some CRMs do this via ActiveX control for internet explorer, and it works great (they use Word's mailmerge) but I need an all-Java solution. Is there a way to automatically make a makefile from a template toolkit template?

My static web pages are built from a huge bunch of templates which are inter-included using Template Toolkit's "import" and "include", so page.html looks like this: [% INCLUDE top %] [% IMPORT middle %] Then top might have even more files included. I have very many of these files, and they have to be run through to create the web pages in various languages (English, French, etc., not computer languages). This is a very complicated process and when one file is updated I would like to be able to automatically remake only the necessary files, using a makefile or something similar. Are there any tools which can parse template toolkit templates and create a dependency list for use in a makefile? Or are there better ways to automate this process?

The manual on Zend_Application_Module_Autoloader states the following: When using module bootstraps with Zend_Application, an instance of Zend_Application_Module_Autoloader will be created by default for each discrete module, allowing you to autoload module resources. Source: http://framework.zend.com/manual/zh/zend.loader.autoloader-resource.html#zend.loader.autoloader-resource.module This requires me to create an empty bootstrap class for each of my modules or else resource autoloading per module won't work with the build-in autoloader. Now I have two questions What is a discrete module? Is there a way to have this resource autoloader registered by default for each module without the need to create a bootstrap file for each module? I want it available in each module and creating so many empty bootstrap classes is something i'd rather prevent.

Entire website in Silverlight 4. Practical or not?

Similar question: Using Silverlight for an entire website? That question is over 2 years old. Silverlight has gone a long way from Silverlight 1.0 Beta 1 to Silverlight 4.0 Final. Would it be practical to create a full Silverlight web application these days? I plan to deploy the website sometime around Q1 2011. I have thought about going ASP.NET + AJAX way, but it just won't give me the same rich features as Silverlight. A lot of people when they hear ASP.NET or Silverlight instantly think about business or enterprise applications. But all I want to create is a fansite, with rich user interface and a great "WOW" factor.

Is it possible to change HANDLE that has been opened for synchronous I/O to be opened for asynchrono

Dear all, Most of my daily programming work in Windows is nowadays around I/O operations of all kind (pipes, consoles, files, sockets, ...). I am well aware of different methods of reading and writing from/to different kinds of handles (Synchronous, asynchronous waiting for completion on events, waiting on file HANDLEs, I/O completion ports, and alertable I/O). We use many of those. For some of our applications it would be very useful to have only one way to treat all handles. I mean, the program may not know, what kind of handle it has received and we would like to use, let's say, I/O completion ports for all. So first I would ask: Let's assume I have a handle: HANDLE h; which has been received by my process for I/O from somewhere. Is there any easy and reliable way to find out what flags it has been created with? The main flag in question is FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED. The only way known to me so far, is to try to register such handle into I/O completion port (using CreateIoCompletionPort()). If that succeeds the handle has been created with FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED. But then only I/O completion port must be used, as the handle can not be unregistered from it without closing the HANDLE h itself. Providing there is an easy a way to determine presence of FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, there would come my second question: Is there any way how to add such flag to already existing handle? That would make a handle that has been originally open for synchronous operations to be open for asynchronous. Would there be a way how to create opposite (remove the FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED to create synchronous handle from asynchronous)? I have not found any direct way after reading through MSDN and googling a lot. Would there be at least some trick that could do the same? Like re-creating the handle in same way using CreateFile() function or something similar? Something even partly documented or not documented at all? The main place where I would need this, is to determine the the way (or change the way) process should read/write from handles sent to it by third party applications. Stress Test tool for Password Protected Website

We need to run a stress test on a password protection section of a website we host. What tool (paid or free) would be best for us to use for this? We'd like to be able to create several 'scripts' and then have the stress test simulate X number of users. Each script will have us login as a specific user and then click on some links and submit forms to simulate an actual user. Ideally the software would also create some nice data exports/charts. Server is a linux web server, but we could run this on linux or Windows so software that will run on either is fine.

Instantiating a context in LINQ to Entities

I've seen two different manners that programmers approach when creating an entity context in their code. The first is like such, and you can find it all over the MSDN code examples: public void DoSomething() { using TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities()) { // business logic and whatever else } } The second is to create the context as a private attribute in some class that encapsulates your business logic. So you would have something like: public class Education_LINQ { private TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities(); public void DoSomething() { var result = from a in context.luAction select a; // business logic and whatever else } } Which way is more efficient? Assume that you have two methods, one called DoSomething1() and another called DoSomething2(), and both methods incorporate the using statement to open the context and do whatever with it. Were you to call one method after the other, would there be any superfluous overhead going on, since essentially both methods create the context and then clean it up when they're done? As opposed to having just one private attribute that is created when a class object is instantiated, and then in turn cleaned up when the object goes out of scope?

Using Xalan in Eclipse plugin

I am facing problems in using xalan in eclipse plugin. When I try to create factory instance by: TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance("org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl", null); I get error: javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactoryConfigurationError: Provider org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl not found ... I have following lib jars in plugin classpath: xml-apis.jar, xercesImpl.jar, serializer.jar, xalan.jar I even can't create class instance by: c = Class.forName("org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl"); Object o = c.newInstance(); It returns error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl But if I run same code outside eclipse plugin with same libs on classpath, it works fine. Could Somebody give an idea if I am doing some mistake or how to reolve this issue?

As docs say it's impossible to add two menu items to NSPopUpButton if they both have the same title. I was trying to add menu items to [popupButton menu], but with no luck. I was also trying to create a new menu, add items to it and then use [popupButton setMenu:newMenu], but no. Menu always display only one item per name. But I know it should be possible, if you try to create a smart playlist in iTunes, you could select "Playlist" from the left popup button, "=" from the middle, and the right one will hold menu items for every playlist in iTunes EVEN if they have the same title. So how do they do it?

help with rails render action vs routing

I was using some image cropping example that I found online and now I got confused. There is actually no "crop" method in my controller. Instead (following the guide) I put a render :action => 'cropping', :layout=> "admin" In my create method. That renders a page the view called cropping.html.erb . It works fine but I have no idea how to link or render that page otherwise, like if I wanted to hit a URL directly or press a button to recrop an image. Should I actually create a crop method in my controller and hook it up via routing if I want to be able to do this, or is there a way within my view to link to the same place that renders the cropping action? Sorry about the confusion :) It doesn't help that the first version of the tutorial did have a cropping method and he removed it!! Any explanation on why one method is better over the other would be great. Thanks!!

Strange behaviour of code inside TransactionScope?

We are facing a very complex issue in our production application. We have a WCF method which creates a complex Entity in the database with all its relation. public void InsertEntity(Entity entity) { using(TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { EntityDao.Create(entity); } } EntityDao.Create(entity) method is very complex and has huge pieces of logic. During the entire process of creation it creates several child entities and also have several queries to database. During the entire WCF request of entity creation usually Connection is maintained in a ThreadStatic variable and reused by the DAOs. Although some of the queries in DAO described in step 2 uses a new connection and closes it after use. Overall we have seen that the above process behaviour is erratic. Some of the queries in the inner DAO does not even return actual data from the database? The same query when run to the actaul data store gives correct result. What can be possible reason of this behaviour?

I'm trying to get MRT working in OpenGL to try out deferred rendering. Here's the situation as I understand it. Create 3 render buffers (for example). Two RGBA8 and one Depth32. Create an FBO. Attach render buffers to FBO. ColorAttachment0/1 for color buffers, DepthAttachment for depth buffer. Bind the FBO. Draw geometry. Send data to different attachments using gl_FragData[] in the frag shader. At this point I would want to take the data in another pass using GLSL, how can a) retrieve data from the framebuffer color attachments, b) get data from the depth component.

How can I put my own text hover into default Eclipse editor?

I need to put some extra information into to the standard "javadoc" hover, that shows up when you go with mouse over some token. Or I need to create a new hover showing that information while pressing some key (like alt) and then hovering (I can see that this is done e.g. with the shift key, which enables us to see the hover with sourcecode, instead of javadoc). So far I found documentation on how to create hover in your own editors, but I need to extend the default java editor. Basically I am interested in showing some e-mail information related to the classname (token) over which user is hovering. Is there any extension point that could be used for this? i have tried to generate Class Diagrams in NetBeans 6.7 and 6.8 but all i get is: i figured out installing UML for 6.8 here: NetBeans 6.8 UML i have followed the instructions here: UML Class diagrams i so far i failed to generate anything meaningful. i have followed the tips: Open your project, then create a new UML project (choose "Reverse Engineered Java-Platform model"). After that all your classes will be available in the UML project under "Model". You can now create a new class diagram and drag your classes from "Model" onto the diagram. but nothing meaningful happens when i drag my classes to the Class Diagrams. it always represents the classes as "datatype" on the diagram and class info is not displayed. any helpful tips regarding how can i fix this? or another way of generating Java class diagrams? thank you for your time.

Overloading properties in C#

Ok, I know that property overloading is not supported in C# - most of the references explain it by citing the single-method-different-returntype problem. However, what about setters? I'd like to directly assign a value as either a string or object, but only return as a string. Like this: public string FieldIdList { get { return fieldIdList.ToString(); } set { fieldIdList = new FieldIdList(value); } } public FieldIdList FieldIdList { set { fieldIdList = value; } } private FieldIdList fieldIdList; Why wouldn't this be allowed? I've also seen that "properties" simply create getter/setter functions on compile. Would it be possible to create my own? Something like: public void set_FieldIdList(FieldIdList value) { fieldIdList = value; } That would do the same thing. Thoughts?

In TFS, is there a maximum amount of workspaces which can be used for a user?

I'm currently in the process of creating a bunch of new build scripts for our platform. Things went okay until I encountered the following error: D:\TFS\WorkingDir\BuildType\TFSBuild.proj(173,5): error MSB4018: Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client.WorkspaceNotFoundException: TF14061: The workspace BUILDMACHINENAME_9;BUILDMACHINENAME\TFSService does not exist. When I take a look at the list of workspaces (with Team Foundation Sidekicks) I see there are a bunch of BUILDMACHINENAME_xxx workspaces, where xxx is a number ranging from 1 to 8. What I'm thinking is that TFS reaches some kind of limit (10 probably) of the amount of workspaces it can create for a certain owner, and thus fails to create a workspace for the build automatically. Can this be the case? Anyone else encountered this?
