  • Why does CPU processing time matter when compared to real wall clock time?

    - by PeanutsMonkey
I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?

  • Mount Windows share on Linux boot

    - by Delameko
I'm running VirtualBox in Windows. I have Linux 10.04 installed as a VM. Whenever I log in I have to run to following command to mount my shared Windows web dev folder: sudo mount.vboxsf web_apps /mnt/web_apps Where can I put this line (minus the sudo) so that it will run once when Linux boots up? I'm guessing there must be a root .profile or .login script that runs at some point?

  • How to tune TCP TIME_WAIT timeout on Solaris?

    - by Hongli Lai
I'm trying to change the TCP TIME_WAIT timeout on Solaris. According to some Google results I need to run this command: ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_time_wait_interval 60000 However I get: operation failed: Not owner What am I doing wrong? I'm already running ndd as root. Is there another way to tune TIME_WAIT?

  • Is it possible to re-order Cygwin tabs in Conemu

    - by Ashutosh Jindal
I can re-order 'cmd' tabs in Conemu ( as per Is that possible to reorder tabs in ConEmu?), but the WinAltLeft and WinAltRight shortcuts do not work if the tab has a Cygwin shell in it. I have tried various combinations of hotkey modifiers but none of them seem to work with the Cygwin shell. This is problematic because most of the tabs in my ConEmu have Cygwin shells. I open a Cygwin shell using the following command: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

  • Notepad++ "Compress whitespace" effect

    - by tylerl
I'm looking for a mechanism within notepad++ to replace runs of consecutive whitespace with a single space, like the "Compress whitespace" command in notepad2. Essentially, in regex form: s/\s+/ /g I know I can do it with the find-replace form, but I would prefer soemthing that I can bind to a keyboard sequence. EDIT Find and replace cannot be recorded as a macro in some versions of Notepad++. Update to the latest if you have trouble.

    - by l0b0
I'd like to have a single command that'll restart Apache on any *nix OS. Currently I'm working with Ubuntu, which has /usr/sbin/apache2ctl /usr/sbin/service no apachectl no httpd and Scientific Linux CERN 5, which has /usr/sbin/apachectl /etc/init.d/httpd no apache2ctl no service I'd like to avoid using a hack like which service 2>/dev/null || which /etc/init.d/httpd

  • Setting a non-standard proxy

    - by Julio Guerra
I am behind a proxy which requires users to login during the first connection with a username and password with a HTML form. Thus, it is not handled with usual http://username:[email protected] and any attempt to access the internet from this setting falls into the login form. How could I automatically login to the proxy? In linux, what manages proxy stuffs when a command tries to access the internet? Thank you.

  • How is DNS used by individual processes?

    - by atroon
When resolving FQDNs or machine names to IP addresses on my local network (mycompany.internal) I can use dig on the command line (linux/mac) or nslookup (windows) to query the configured server and get a response. But trying to enter the FQDN or even just the machine name in a ping command or in a web browser results in 'Unknown Host' or DNS errors. Here's a sample, this one from the Mac: mac:~ atroon$ dig server.mycompany.internal ; <<>> DiG 9.6.0-APPLE-P2 <<>> server.mycompany.internal ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 5219 ;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;server.mycompany.internal. IN A ;; ANSWER SECTION: server.mycompany.internal. 1200 IN A 172.16.254.36 ;; Query time: 0 msec ;; SERVER: 172.16.254.8#53(172.16.254.8) ;; WHEN: Wed Dec 16 11:39:15 2009 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 55 mac:~ atroon$ ping server.mycompany.internal<br> ping: cannot resolve server.mycompany.internal: Unknown host I cannot for the life of me figure this one out. The DNS server is a SBS 2003 box which handles AD, some file/print, etc for a small company network. This issue happens to me about three times a week, and when I'm connected to the local network directly, the same switch as the server even. I can make any connection I want with IP addresses, I just can't make DNS work. Additionally, at the same time I'm experiencing this, other users are fine, which makes me think it's a problem on my Mac. But what sort of problem? How can dig send a query and get a reply, and ping say 'unknown host'? I'm posting here vs. serverfault because I think this is a local problem not a server problem...but if anyone can point me at the server, I guess we'll head down the street a domain or two.

  • Print the file name with another extension (Batch-program)

    - by Semyon Perepelitsa
Batch-program launchs with 1 parameter (full path to file) program.cmd "C:\Path\To\File\Filename.txt" Now, this program consists of 1 command: echo %1 And it just prints an argument: C:\Path\To\File\Filename.txt for the upper example. But I want it to print an argument (full path) with another extension, e.g. .exe. For the upper example, I want it to print C:\Path\To\File\Filename.exe. How to make it do that?

  • Steps to diagnose performance bottlenecks on Mac OS X

    - by Dave Cahill
If you wanted to track down performance issues on a machine running Mac OS X and find out what was causing slowdowns, which command-line or graphical tools would you use, and how would you use them? I'm interested in advice on the best tools, and explanations of how to use them - when a machine slows down or freezes up, I'd like to be able to dig down and understand what's going on, memory / disk / CPU-wise. Thanks.

  • Copying text from Vim to something else without clipboard support of Vim

    - by edem
I've tried to copy text from Vim window to somewhere but it doesn't work. Decisions which I've found with google didn't help too. For instance, using the registers "* and "+. Command vim version is (Ubuntu 12.04. Vim 7.3): vim --version | grep clipboard -clientserver -clipboard +cmdline_compl +cmdline_hist +cmdline_info +comments -xterm_clipboard -xterm_save Can you help me to solve it? Should I use other vim version or are there any methods to copy text from Vim to something else?

  • How do I install Netatalk in Ubuntu 9.10 (tutorial)?

    - by Phobis
I have never installed Netatalk before. I have to help someone get this up and running on a Ubuntu 9.10 server and I don't know if there is any special configuration or install steps I need to follow in Ubuntu 9.10 to get it up and running. I am doing this remotely through ssh, so I prefer instruction via command-line. Thanks!

  • Is there any way to execute something when closing the laptop's lid?

    - by Matias
I'm wondering if there is any way to execute a program, run some command or anything else when closing the laptop's lid. My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.

  • How to ignore an autocmd in vim's undo history?

    - by Dave Vogt
I have the following autocommand, which basically strips whitespace at the end of each line. Unfortunately, at each save, it inserts a step into the undo to jump to the beginning to the file, which is quite annoying. Is there a way to make vim ignore jumping around in the following command, so that undoing keeps the cursor in position? autocmd BufWritePre * \ let s:bufwritepre_currline = line('.') | \ let s:bufwritepre_currcol = col('.') | \ silent %s/\s*$// | \ call cursor(s:bufwritepre_currline, s:bufwritepre_currcol)

  • Sync local directory with remote FTPS?

    - by A T
How do I keep my local directory in sync with my remote FTPS directory? Note that I've tried WinSCP, but found that it only works a few times then I need to restart it to get it going again. Also I've tried all the utilities mentioned here but only a few supported the connection requirements (explicit SSL over FTP), and those that did didn't have "realtime" directory sync. Also note that a curl, rsync or wput command which I can put into "scheduled tasks" will suffice, if it can do directory sync.

  • date and other commands no longer working in sh script

    - by williamsdb
I have a shell script that used to run find on Ubuntu 10.04 but since I have moved to 12.04 it doesn't work as before throwing the following messages: /home/checks.sh: 1: /home/checks.sh: date : not found find: invalid mode `0777\r' the script is as follows: date echo "" echo "Files changed in the last 24 hours" echo "==================================" find /var/www -mtime -1 | grep -iv '.log' echo "" echo "" echo "Files with permissions set to 777" echo "=================================" find /var/www -perm 0777 all lines work from the command line but not in the shell script any more. Can't find anything in the manual to suggest why.
