• .NET Reflector and getters/setters issue

  I'm using an up-to-date .NET Reflector to disassemble an internal legacy app whose source code is almost impossible to recover. I need to find the cause of a nasty bug, and then possibly patch it. Reflector did a good job as usual in the re-creation of the project's structure, but soon I discovered that every property call was left "expanded" to its get_() and set_() method signatures, rendering the source code impossible to compile. A quick Visual Studio "Search/Replace" with regex solved these cases, but it's awkward. Is there a way to make Reflector behave correctly?

• Is there a sample set of web log data available for testing analysis against?

  Sorry if this isn't strictly speaking a programming question, but I figure my best chance of success would be to ask here. I'm developing some web log file analysis algorithms, but to date I only have access to a fairly small amount of web log data to process. One algorithm I want to use makes some assumptions about 'the shape' of typical web log data, and so I'd like to test it against a larger 'exemplar' - perhaps the logs of a busy site with a good distribution of traffic from different sources etc. Is there a set of such data available somewhere? • subversion merge back to trunk

  I set up a branch several weeks ago. When some changes were made to the trunk, SVN was committing to the branch, and not the trunk. The changes were minor and applicable to the branch anyway, so I assumed this is how the branch should work. Now that the branch work is finished, I merged back the branch back to my working trunk, assuming SVN would replace the old trunk with the new branch in the repository as well. That is not the case though. My repository trunk is out of date. I would like to make the repository trunk be same as the branch and then delete the branch. How can I do this? • IE8 blocking JavaScript Cookies

  Hey there folks, Here is one that is throwing me for a loop. I am trying to set a simple cookie that has one name:value pair on IE8. Tested on FF and it works fine. IE8 keeps blocking it. • How to allow users to select their own grouping for a .NET TreeView control

  I am using a treeview to display projects, tasks, time entries, and the people who are working on a project. I would like to allow the user to define a custom grouping (ie. Project->Task->Time Entries or Project->Date (of time entry)->Task->TimeEntry). The relevant groups would be Project, Task, Time Entry, and Person, with some metadata from them. I want to have some modular way to allow a user to specify how they would like to display the information. Does anyone know of a good method by which this can be done? I currently have hard-coded a display which looks like this: Project Task Time Entry Next Project ... My thought is to do something like write methods to display each type and somehow let a user select what order the display would group. Please let me know if I am not being clear enough.

• New hire expectations... (Am I being unreasonable?)

  I work for a very small custom software shop. We currently consist me and my boss. My boss is an old FoxPro DOS developer and OOP makes him uncomfortable. He is planning on taking a back seat in the next few years to hopefully enjoy a “partial retirement”. I will be taking over the day to day operations and we are now desperately looking for more help. We tried Monster.com, Dice.com, and others a few years ago when we started our search. We had no success. We have tried outsourcing overseas (total disaster), hiring kids right out of college (mostly a disaster but that’s where I came from), interns (good for them, not so good for us) and hiring laid off “experienced” developers (there was a reason they were laid off). I have heard hiring practices discussed on podcasts, blogs, etc... and have tried a few. The “Fizz Buzz” test was a good one. One kid looked physically ill before he finally gave up. I think my problem is that I have grown so much as a developer since I started here that I now have a high standard. I hear/read very intelligent people podcasts and blogs and I know that there are lots of people out there that can do the job. I don’t want to settle for less than a “good” developer. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. I expect any good developer (entry level or experienced) to be billable (at least paying their own wage) in under one month. I expect any good developer to be able to be productive (at least dangerous) in any language or technology with only a few days of research/training. I expect any good developer to be able to take a project from initial customer request to completion with little or no help from others. Am I being unreasonable? What constitutes a valuable developer? What should be expected of an entry level developer? What should be expected of an experienced developer? I realize that everyone is different but there has to be some sort of expectations standard, right? I have been giving the test project below to potential canidates to weed them out. Good idea? Too much? Too little? Please let me know what you think. Thanks. If I'm correct I think we can do it with FMDatabase by wrapping it between [db beginTransaction] and [db commit]. I wonder if we can do the same thing by using EGODatabase.   Hello, I'm storing timestamp as int field. And on large table it takes too long to get rows inserted at date because I'm using mysql function FROM_UNIXTIME. SELECT * FROM table WHERE FROM_UNIXTIME(timestamp_field, '%Y-%m-%d') = '2010-04-04' Is there any ways to speed this query? Maybe I should use query for rows using timestamp_field >= x AND timestamp_field < y? Thank you I've just tried this query... SELECT * FROM table WHERE timestamp_field >= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 00:00:00') AND timestamp_field <= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 23:59:59') but there is no any performance bonuses. :(

• Django Initial for a ManyToMany Field

  I have a form that edits an instance of my model. I would like to use the form to pass all the values as hidden with an inital values of username defaulting to the logged in user so that it becomes a subscribe form. • How to track history of db tables that include many-to-many mapping tables?

  I have seen several questions here on tracking db history, but can't seem to find one that matches our situation. We need to track the history of several tables, some of which are many-to-many linking tables. Eg say we have this schema: EntityA id name EntityB id name ABLink A_id B_id So, tracking changes to EntityA or EntityB seems pretty straightforward. We can keep a log table with the same columns plus a date stamp and user. But what about the links? How do we maintain the set of links that are valid for a given version of the data? We need to be able to recreate a history of the data showing changes in chronological order. So if a link added or deleted, we indicate that. Etc.

• AIR: sync gui with data-base?

  I am going to be building an AIR application that shows a list (about 1-25 rows of data) from a data-base. The data-base is on the web. I want the list to be as accurate as possible, meaning as soon as the data-base data changes, the list displayed in the app should update asap. I do not know of anyway that the air application could be notified when there is a change, I am thinking I am going to have to poll the data-base at certain intervals to keep an up to date list. So my question is, first is there any way to NOT have to keep checking the data-base? or if I do keep have to keep checking the data-base what is a reasonable interval to do that at? Thanks.

• Fatal Error when using ADODB in VB6 on Windows Server 2003 SP2

  We've got a legacy app (VB6) which works fine on an old Windows Server 2003 box and has been for many years. Recently we've had to move it to a different physical location and in doing this we cloned the box with virtualisation and placed it elsewhere. In theory these two environments should be identical. On the new box however the app falls over when calling the RecordCount method of an ADODB.Recordset. I should say that I can successfully read the ADODB.RecordSet.Properties.Count property with no problem on the line before. The event viewer reports the following: Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 28/09/2012 Time: 11:15:27 User: N/A Computer: APP01 Description: Faulting application Control.exe, version 1.0.0.6, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.4789, fault address 0x0002c6e4. I can only imagine there is something wrong with using ADODB within a virtualised environment. Any ideas?

  Hi, memory management still gives me grief. This time it is an NSDate iVar that I init using NSDate *myNSDate = [[NSDate date] firstDayOfMonth]; with a method call to - (NSDate *)firstDayOfMonth { NSDateComponents *tmpDateComponents = [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] components:NSYearCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit | NSEraCalendarUnit | NSWeekCalendarUnit | NSWeekdayOrdinalCalendarUnit fromDate:self]; [tmpDateComponents setDay:1]; [tmpDateComponents setHour:0]; [tmpDateComponents setMinute:0]; [tmpDateComponents setSecond:0]; return [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] dateFromComponents:tmpDateComponents]; } At the end of the init call the retain count is at 1 (Note the iVar is not defined as a property). When I step into the viewWillAppear method the myNSDate has vanished. I tried to do an explicit retain on it, but that only lasts until I update the iVar using the above method again. I though - ok - I add the retain to the return of the function, but that makes the leak analyser throw up an error. What am I doing wrong?

• Are there Python ORMs out there that support multiple independent databases concurrently in use?

  I'm writing an application in Python where I wish to use sqlite as the backing store for documents edited by the app, with documents generally living in memory, but being saved to disk-based databases when the application saves. Ideally I'd like to use something like an ORM to make access to the data from my Python application code simple. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of Python ORMs, including SQLAlchemy, SQLObject, Django, and Storm, associate the database connection (or engine or whatever) with the classes representing table data, rather than instances of those classes. This restricts these ORMs to working with a single database connection across all instances. Since I'd like to support having multiple documents open simultaneously, this isn't going to work for me. Are there any ORMs out there that support this usage model in Python? Bazaar seems to support this, but it's quite out of date, and at first glance appears to have some other shortcomings. • Logging into table in MS SQL trigger

  I am coding MS SQL 2005 trigger. I want to make some logging during trigger execution, using INSERT statement into my log table. When there occurs error during execution, I want to raise error and cancel action that cause trigger execution, but not to lose log records. What is the best way to achieve this? Now my trigger logs everything except situation when there is error - because of ROLLBACK. RAISERROR statement is needed in order to inform calling program about error.   I'd like to know how can I sort values in the Django admin dropdowns. For example, I have a model called Article with a foreign key pointing to the Users model, smth like: class Article(models.Model): title = models.CharField(_('Title'), max_length=200) slug = models.SlugField(_('Slug'), unique_for_date='publish') author = models.ForeignKey(User) body = models.TextField(_('Body')) status = models.IntegerField(_('Status')) categories = models.ManyToManyField(Category, blank=True) publish = models.DateTimeField(_('Publish date')) I edit this model in django admin: class ArticleAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): list_display = ('title', 'publish', 'status') list_filter = ('publish', 'categories', 'status') search_fields = ('title', 'body') prepopulated_fields = {'slug': ('title',)} admin.site.register(Article, ArticleAdmin) and of course it makes the nice user select dropdown for me, but it's not sorted and it takes a lot of time to find a user by username.

The files are glob()'d in, and then sorted this way using asort($fileNameToLastModified, SORT_NUMERIC); I use array_shift() to get the oldest file. Unfortunately, it seems to be giving me the value, and there doesn't seem to be a way to get the key. Would the only way to do that be something like this? $keys = array_keys($fileNameToLastModified); $oldest = array_shift($keys); array_shift($fileNameToLastModified); // to manually chop the first array member off too. Or is there a built in? Thanks

• Is being a programmer a younger person's job?

  After you get old, say past 30 or 40. Can you still keep up with the young coders from your company, those fresh out of school, who can code for 15+ hours on 10 cans of redbulls (most people in Google, Facebook, etc) ? And given the lightning speed with which today's programming frameworks and architectures evolve, can you keep up with the most up to date stuff and be as proficient at them as the next college grad? I know for jobs like unix/c/embedded programming, it might be that the older the better. But for programming jobs in say web development, social media, search engine technology, etc. Do you become less and less competitive career-wise versus youngsters? For example, most coders in Google and Facebook, I believe are under 25 years old. In other words, once you reach a certain age, would it be unwise to continue to be a coder, and is it better to try becoming a project manager or architect?
