  • Objective-c garbage collection

    - by Chris
If garbage collection is not required: - (void) awakeFromNib{ //Create the NSStatusBar and set its length statusItem = [[[NSStatusBar systemStatusBar] statusItemWithLength:NSSquareStatusItemLength] retain]; ... Do I have to release that? And if I do, would that be in a finalize method or dealloc method? If garbage collection is required, then is the retain call above ignored automatically?

  • Storing and managing video files

    - by Ajay
What approach is considered to be the best to store and manage video files? As databases are used for small textual data, are databases good enough to handle huge amounts of video/audio data? Are databases, the formidable solution? Apart from size of hard disk space required for centrally managing video/audio/image content, what are the requirements of hosting such a server?

  • Remove links with Javascript

    - by Arlen Beiler
    How do I remove links from a webpage with Javascript. I am using Google Chrome. The code I tried is: function removehyperlinks() { try { alert(document.anchors.length); alert(document.getElementsByTagName('a')); for(i=0;i=document.anchors.length;i++) { var a = document.anchors[i]; a.outerHTML = a.innerHTML; var b = document.getElementsByTagName('a'); b[i].outerHTML = b[i].innerHTML; } } catch(e) { alert (e);} alert('done'); } Of course, this is test code, which is why I have the alerts and 2 things trying at the same time. The first alert returns "0" the second [Object NodeList] and the third returns "done". My html body looks like this: <body onload="removehyperlinks()"> <ol style="text-align:left;" class="messagelist"> <li class="accesscode"><a href="#">General information, Updates, &amp; Meetings<span class="extnumber">141133#</span></a> <ol> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li><a href="#">...</a></li> <li start="77"><a href="#"">...</a></li> <li start="88"><a href="#">...</a></li> <li start="99"><a href="#">...</a></li> </ol> </li> </ol> </body>

  • What's the requests/second standard for scraping websites?

    - by feydr
This was the closest question to my question and it wasn't really answered very well imo: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2022030/web-scraping-etiquette I'm looking for the answer to #1: How many requests/second should you be doing to scrape? Right now I pull from a queue of links. Every site that gets scraped has it's own thread and sleeps for 1 second in between requests. I ask for gzip compression to save bandwidth. Are there standards for this? Surely all the big search engines have some set of guidelines they follow in regards to this.

  • GlassFish JDO and global object

    - by bach
Hi, I'm thinking about the GlassFish platform for my new app. My app env. doesn't have a big volume of data to handle, but a lot of users writing/reading the same data A very volotile portion of the data updates every 200milsec by diff users. Therefore I'd like that type of data to be in memory only and accessible to the whole app My questions: How do I use a global object in memory with GF? a. use a static variable object - for that I guess I need to make sure GF is running on only 1 JVM -- how to I configure GF to run on 1 jvm? b. use HttpContext - same as a. How do I persist to the DB? a. can I use JDO interface? How do I Schedule tasks to be performed in the future (something like the task queue in GAE) thanks, J.S. Bach

  • Why are joins bad when considering scalability?

    - by acidzombie24
Why are joins bad or 'slow'. I know i heard this more then once. I found this quote The problem is joins are relatively slow, especially over very large data sets, and if they are slow your website is slow. It takes a long time to get all those separate bits of information off disk and put them all together again. source I always thought they were fast especially when looking up a PK. Why are they 'slow'?

  • UDP Tracker not responding

    - by kelton52
Alright, so I'm trying to connect to UDP trackers using c#, but I never get a response. I also don't get any errors. Here's my code. namespace UDPTester { class MainClass { public static bool messageReceived = false; public static Random Random = new Random(); public static void LOG(string format, params object[] args) { Console.WriteLine (format, args); } public static void Main (string[] args) { LOG ("Creating Packet..."); byte[] packet; using(var stream = new MemoryStream()) { var bc = new MiscUtil.Conversion.BigEndianBitConverter(); using(var br = new MiscUtil.IO.EndianBinaryWriter(bc,stream)) { LOG ("Magic Num: {0}",(Int64)0x41727101980); br.Write (0x41727101980); br.Write((Int32)0); br.Write ((Int32)Random.Next()); packet = stream.ToArray(); LOG ("Packet Size: {0}",packet.Length); } } LOG ("Connecting to tracker..."); var client = new System.Net.Sockets.UdpClient("tracker.openbittorrent.com",80); UdpState s = new UdpState(); s.e = client.Client.RemoteEndPoint; s.u = client; StartReceiving(s); LOG ("Sending Packet..."); client.Send(packet,packet.Length); while(!messageReceived) { Thread.Sleep(1000); } LOG ("Ended"); } public static void StartReceiving(UdpState state) { state.u.BeginReceive(ReceiveCallback,state); } public static void ReceiveCallback(IAsyncResult ar) { UdpClient u = (UdpClient)((UdpState)(ar.AsyncState)).u; IPEndPoint e = (IPEndPoint)((UdpState)(ar.AsyncState)).e; Byte[] receiveBytes = u.EndReceive(ar, ref e); string receiveString = Encoding.ASCII.GetString(receiveBytes); LOG("Received: {0}", receiveString); messageReceived = true; StartReceiving((UdpState)ar.AsyncState); } } public class UdpState { public UdpClient u; public EndPoint e; } } I was using a normal BinaryWriter, but that didn't work, and I read somewhere that it wants it's data in BigEndian. This doesn't work for any of the UDP trackers I've found, any ideas why I'm not getting a response? Did they maybe change the protocol and not tell anyone? HTTP trackers all work fine. Trackers I've tried udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80 udp://tracker.ccc.de:80 udp://tracker.istole.it:80 Also, I'm not interested in using MonoTorrent(and when I was using it, the UDP didn't work anyways). • Visual Studio highlighting source code in bold

    - by widgisoft
While editing HTML/ASPX/ASCX etc; whenever I select an html tag, visual studio highlights the entire tag in black and bold; the black I'm not so fussed about but the bold changes the length of the line and really messes up the formatting. Is there a way to disable this? Thanks, Chris

  • NServicebus DNS Entry for Machine location

    - by Paul Oakham
Hi Guys, I am trying to use a DNS entry for my NServicebus queue endpoint but no messages are being sent. It works fine when I enter the computer name or an IPAddress. I can ping the record and it resolves correctly so i'm wondering if it is possible to use a DNS record? Here is my config: <MessageEndpointMappings> <!--These are the messages which need to be sent to the BusService --> <add Messages="BusCommon.BusHeartBeatMessage, BusCommon" Endpoint="[email protected]" /> </MessageEndpointMappings> Thanks

  • Regex to get value of URL parameter?

    - by stef
In a url like the one below, I'd like to get the value of ProdId. The URL format will always be consistent, as will the parameter name, but the length of the value may change. It will always be numeric. http://www.site.com/page.php?ProdId=2683322&xpage=2 Using PHP what's the fastest way to get it (I'll be processing 10,000's so speed is an issue) ?

  • Design pattern for adding / removing elements

    - by de3
Wikipedia's definition for Iterator pattern design: the Iterator pattern is a design pattern in which iterators are used to access the elements of an aggregate object sequentially without exposing its underlying implementation. Iterator interface in java provides the following methods hasNext() next() remove() Is there a pattern design, or a java interface for inserting / deleting elements, and getting length of the aggregate object, in addition to iterating them? I know remove() is an optional method that can be used once per call to next(), but I am implementing a circular FIFO array and need a method delete() independent of iterator's next().
