• Trade off: Lower the number of URLs in sitemap from 43k to 23k or update the sitemap.xml only weekly basis

  we rewrote the sitemap creation process. Now the sitemap contains 43.000 URLs. 20k more than before. We have daily changing in URLs. The script that is creating the complete sitemap takes more than 30h. So we can not build it every day. Lets say that increasing the speed of the script is not possible. What should I do? A: Stay with the 23k URLs and update it daily B: Increase number of URLs to 43k and update it weekly

• How do I simplify terrain with tunnels or overhangs?

  I'm attempting to store vertex data in a quadtree with C++, such that far-away vertices can be combined to simplify the object and speed up rendering. This works well with a reasonably flat mesh, but what about terrain with overhangs or tunnels? How should I represent such a mesh in a quadtree? After the initial generation, each mesh is roughly 130,000 polygons and about 300 of these meshes are lined up to create the surface of a planetary body. A fully generated planet is upwards of 10,000,000 polygons before applying any culling to the individual meshes. Therefore, this second optimization is vital for the project. The rest of my confusion focuses around my inexperience with vertex data: How do I properly loop through the vertex data to group them into specific quads? How do I conclude from vertex data what a quad's maximum size should be? How many quads should the quadtree include?

• updater stuck on downloading python files

  However i am a java programmer is consider myself as a linux noob. So i could use a little help here... I am trying to update my ubuntu from version 10.04 to 12.04.1 (LTS). The downloading start and runs at around 10MB/s untill i am somewhere near 26% and the speed just drops to 0. I figured i could use the command "do-release-update" so i could see what it was doing. Again the same occured: the downloading stucked on 26% at "http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubunutu/ precise/main python-qt4 1386 4.9.1-2ubuntu1". It says it downloaded 41% of that file/package. It also tries another wget on the same file every X seconds. Help? Greetings Tim, Holland.

• Programmatic resource monitoring per process in Linux

  Hi, I want to know if there is an efficient solution to monitor a process resource consumption (cpu, memory, network bandwidth) in Linux. I want to write a daemon in C++ that does this monitoring for some given PIDs. From what I know, the classic solution is to periodically read the information from /proc, but this doesn't seem the most efficient way (it involves many system calls). For example to monitor the memory usage every second for 50 processes, I have to open, read and close 50 files (that means 150 system calls) every second from /proc. Not to mention the parsing involved when reading these files. Another problem is the network bandwidth consumption: this cannot be easily computed for each process I want to monitor. The solution adopted by NetHogs involves a pretty high overhead in my opinion: it captures and analyzes every packet using libpcap, then for each packet the local port is determined and searched in /proc to find the corresponding process. Do you know if there are more efficient alternatives to these methods presented or any libraries that deal with this problems?

  I am running ubuntu 11.10 32bit in my dell xps L502. Working good except few problems. Blue tooth always turned on reboot,I would like to turn it off always. Screen brightness is not saved.Every time I reboot, the screen goes back to full brightness.How to save that? and the most important problem is internet speed through wi-fi is really very slow when operating on battery.the card is intel centrino Advanced-N 1030 with integrated blue tooth. Any help will be appriciated... :)

• What to Return? Error String, Bool with Error String Out, or Void with Exception

  I spend most of my time in C# and am trying to figure out which is the best practice for handling an exception and cleanly return an error message from a called method back to the calling method. For example, here is some ActiveDirectory authentication code. Please imagine this Method as part of a Class (and not just a standalone function.) bool IsUserAuthenticated(string domain, string user, string pass, out errStr) { bool authentic = false; try { // Instantiate Directory Entry object DirectoryEntry entry = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://" + domain, user, pass); // Force connection over network to authenticate object nativeObject = entry.NativeObject; // No exception thrown? We must be good, then. authentic = true; } catch (Exception e) { errStr = e.Message().ToString(); } return authentic; } The advantages of doing it this way are a clear YES or NO that you can embed right in your If-Then-Else statement. The downside is that it also requires the person using the method to supply a string to get the Error back (if any.) I guess I could overload this method with the same parameters minus the "out errStr", but ignoring the error seems like a bad idea since there can be many reasons for such a failure... • Installation of Ubuntu 13.04 seems to take forever

  I am about to install Ubuntu 13.04 on my AMD x64 machine and the installation of the lib packages seems to take forever. Is that a known issue? I know that it might take some time when checking to download packages from the Internet but this went through very fast. In the terminal-like view I can see, the system is just unpacking, installing, configuring etc. in a quite slow way. In the opening screen it reads: It just takes a few minutes (or something close to that). Again: Is that a normal behavior or am I doing something wrong and what could I do to speed up the process in case I'm running an installation again on another system?

• WCF Windows service permissions problem

  I have created a WCF service and hosted it using Windows Services host. To install the project I created an installation project (as described here). In the tutorial, it says to define in the ProjectInstaller.cs the serviceProcessInstaller1 Account property to be Network Service. When using this setting the service did not started on the server. When I tried to start the process manually, it immediately return to stopped state. After when I changed the Account to LocalSystem the service works properly. My questions are: Any ideas why it won't work with Network Service account? What are the security implications of using a server with LocalSystem account? This server is used locally in the intranet as a reporting server for other servers.

• WNetAddConnection2 from a Windows Service

  I'm trying to connect to a remote password protected shared folder from a Windows service, which runs as LocalSystem account. It seems that the LocalSystem account is unable to directly access password-protected network shares using WNetAddConnection2() or similar calls. Can anyone confirm this? I've read that impersonating an administrator user might be the way to go. I've tried using LogonUser() and ImpersonateLoggedOnUser() before WNetAddConnection2(), it appears that the mount of the network path succeeds, but then actual accesses (e.g. enumerating of files in remote folder) fail. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Power management issues on an Asus N55

  I noticed that with respect to Win7 on my Asus N55 Ubuntu 12.04 tend to overheat the system. After startup the fan controller takes control of the fan, I could here it slowing down, after a few second following a login the fan increases its speed again. Though there are no processor hungry process: top shows only Xorg consuming 4%. Even with the system monitor the CPUs load look ok. Is it a power management related problem? This can cause battery life troubles in general, and electronics is never happy to be overheated. Is there a better tool to root the cause of the issue?

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 2

  Today's Review (alphabetic order): GooNews, Grocery Shopping List, Need for Speed, SurfCube, and United Nations News. I'm a day late if these are going to be 'Monday' posts, but there are lots of apps, lots of goodness, and lots of email, so I might try to do 2 a week, we'll see. So once again I've got a small review of 5 apps that are either on my phone or have been. Disclaimers at the end. In this Issue:   GooNews is a very cool app from Shawn Wildermuth (AgiliTrain). I don't know if he uses this as a demo during his instruction, but it definitely serves a purpose... wanna pick up the top news items from Google on a never-ending basis? ... this is it. You can add your own keyword searches, and send stories to InstaPaper or share via email. I like this because it brings me the news quickly and updated, and works great. GooNews is by AgiliTrain and is Free This was a request by the author, and actually surprised me. I'm a big one for lists, but I would have just done a OneNote list to SkyDrive and to my phone. This app is a lot more than that, but will take you some setup to make it be 'yours'. For obvious reasons, there are no unit prices on things, so you have to set that up to get some idea of the cost of what you're shopping for. But if you do that, you'll get a nice total. Lots of thought went into the various categories and you can add your own. There's a bit of animation on the category selection that's nice. He seems to have covered all the bases necessary to use this, even shopping 'plans' that can be saved, and emailing of lists. As I said, I'm more of a raw list person, but if you take the time to set this up, it should work very nicely for you. Grocery Shopping List is by Grocery Shopper and is $0.99 ($1.99 after Feb 1) with a free trial. This was my 2nd commercial game I bought, and the one I've played the most. I ran the trial, thought it worked great, and bought it. I've had a lot of fun with this... there's no gas pedal.. your foot is in the carbeurator from the GO!, and unless you wanna tap the screen and brake like a little girl, just hang onto the steering wheel (the phone), and guide your way through. Hours of fun and challenges here. I like this because it's got some challenge to it, and the cars seem to be very realistic in their reactions. Need for Speed Undercover is by Electronic Arts is $4.99 and has a free trial. SurfCube Browser is another app by the folks that did the GuitarTuner I reviewed on Monday. You have to see SurfCube to believe it. You've probably seen the YouTube video, if not check SilverlightCream number 1017. The app works very solid, and just as the video demonstrates. I downloaded and tried this, and it immediately did 2 things: bought it, and pinned it to my start page. I like this because it's fun to work with, and it works great as a browser. I'm about *this* close to replacing the IE tile on my front page with SurfCube. SurfCube Browser is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $1.99 and has a free trial. Coming in with another News app is United Nations News by Justin Angel. This is definitely a news aggregator for 'grown ups'... news, photos, videos, and radio broadcsts from the international community all in one very slick app. This is an amazingly well thought-out and complete app. Even better yet, Justin has the code on CodePlex. A very well-done International news aggregator. United Nations News is by Justin Angel and is Free. A few disclaimers: Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week (twice if I find time), and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. I'm still playing with the format, comments are welcome.   A few months ago I discovered a cool course called Rails for Zombies. This is a great site that allows us to write code and see the results. It takes us through the paces to get us up to speed with Rails. You have to pass each level (including code challenges) before being taken to the next level, and it gets you grounded in the fundamentals of Rails. I'm wondering if an interactive tutorial site exists for Javascript? One that will walk me through the paces of writing better Javascript, and challenge me along the way.

• C++ Game engine time scale

  i have begun creating a very simple game engine and i am trying to work out how to create a time scale for the game.by time scale i mean some way of increasing and decreasing the speed of the game(not the fps) like creating a slow motion effect ... i have no idea how this could be accomplished so any help would be appreciated. if this help im using windows, Opengl and C++ in the game engine... • Odd Series of Packets, How would I reproduce this behavior?

  I recorded a series of http packets that I cant programmatically recreate. The series of packets goes like this: HTTP GET /axis-cgi/admin/param.cgi?action=list&group=Network.eth0.MACAddress,Properties.System.SerialNumber,DVTelTest,SightLogix.ProdShortName HTTP/1.1 HTTP HTTP/1.1 200 OK (text/plain) HTTP GET /axis-cgi/admin/param.cgi?action=list&group=Properties.Image.Resolution HTTP/1.1 HTTP HTTP/1.1 200 OK (text/plain) HTTP GET /axis-cgi/admin/param.cgi?action=update&Network.RTSP.ProtViewer=password HTTP/1.1 HTTP GET /axis-cgi/admin/param.cgi?action=list&group=Event HTTP/1.1 HTTP HTTP/1.1 200 OK (text/plain) HTTP GET /axis-cgi/admin/param.cgi?action=list&group=ImageSource.I0.Sensor HTTP/1.1 HTTP HTTP/1.1 200 OK (text/plain) Notice the two GET followed by one response. I though the two gets were going out at the same time but there is no corresponding number of responses. Also when trying to reproduce this pattern as the server if I abort the first GET request the client waits until it times out and starts the request over with out sending any other requests. What is happening here? How can I reproduce it?

• Authentication for SaaS

  What would be recommended as an authentication solution for a Software-as-a-service product? Specifically, my product would have clients that would typically have low information technology skills, potentially not even having an IT department within their organization. I would still like to have my application authenticate against their internal directory service (eDirectory, Active Directory, etc.). I don't want them, however, to have to open/forward ports (for instance, opening up port 636 so I can do LDAPS binds directly to their directory service). One idea I had was to have an application installed on a server within their organization's network that would backconnect to my service. This would be a persistant socket. When I need to authenticate a user, I send the credentials via the socket (encrypted) - the application then performs a bind/whatever to authenticate against the directory service and replies with OK/FAIL. What would you suggest? My goal here is to essentially have the client install an application within their network, with very little configuration or intervention.

• Is Query Performance different for different versions of SQL Server?

  I have fired 3 update queries in my stored procedure for 3 different tables. Each table contains almost 2,00,000 records and all records have to be updated. I am using indexing to speed up the performance. It quite working well with SQL Server 2008. stored procedure takes only 12 to 15 minutes to execute. (updates almost 1000 rows in 1 second in all three tables) But when I run same scenario with SQL Server 2008 R2 then stored procedure takes more time to complete execution. its about 55 to 60 minutes. (updates almost 100 rows in 1 second in all three tables). I couldn't find any reason or solution for that. I have also tested same scenario with SQL Server 2012. but result is same as above. Please give suggestions.

• Is there really Object-relational impedance mismatch?

  It is always stated that it is hard to store applications objects in relational databases - the object-relational impedance mismatch - and that is why Document databases are better. However, is there really an impedance mismatch? And object has a key (albeit it may be hidden away by the runtime as a pointer to memory), a set of values, and foreign keys to other objects. Objects are as much made up of tables as it is a document. Neither really fit. I can see a use for databases to model the data into specific shapes for scenarios in the application - e.g. to speed up database lookup and avoid joins, etc., but won't it be better to keep the data as normalized as possible at the core, and transform as required?

• How forgiving do you need to be on new employees?

  Recently we have a new developer in our team. We are getting him up to speed and he is picking it all up quite fast, but a new developer means new (foreign) coding styles and ways to solve things. It feels kinda petty to start whining about coding styles at the first three classes he codes, but how forgiving are you guys when dealing with new developers? Do you let them muddle on, and point it out later? Or do you wield the scepter of intolerance immediately? When do you draw the line, or if not, why not? P.S.
