• What Conferences would you recommend for a UI / Frontend Web Developer in the next 6 months?

  Hello, I'm looking for a strong conference(s) to attend in the next 6 months. I may be able to attend one or two. I'm looking for something surrounding Frontend Web Development -- web standards, CSS3, html5, javascript, UX, and usability are strong interests of mine. I'm also starting to consider diving deep into designing for Mobile devices. I've discovered these 2 conferences so far -- they look very good -- but am I missing anything HUGE and/or obvious? • What are the typical reasons Javascript developed on Firefox fails on IE?

  I developed some javascript enhanced pages that run fine on recent Firefox and Safari. I missed to check in Internet Explorer, and now I find the pages don't work on IE 6 and 7 (so far). The scripts are somehow not executed, the pages show as if javascript wasn't there, although some javascript is executed. I am using own libraries with dom manipulation, from YUI 2 I use YUI-Loader and the XML-Http-Request, and on one page I use "psupload", which depends on JQuery. I am installing Microsoft Script Editor from Office XP and will now debug. I will also write specific tests now. What are the typical failing points of IE? What direction I can keep my eyes open. I found this page, which shows some differences: http://www.quirksmode.org/compatibility.html Can you from your experience name some typical things I should look for first? I will also ask more questions here for specific tasks later, but for now I am interested in your experience why IE usually fails on scripts that run fine in Firefox

• Why don't Domain class static methods work from inside a grails "service"?

  I want a grails service to be able to access Domain static methods, for queries, etc. For example, in a controller, I can call IncomingCall.count() to get the number of records in table "IncomingCall" but if I try to do this from inside a service, I get the error: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'incomingStatusService': Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is groovy.lang.MissingMethodException: No signature of method: static ms.wdw.tropocontrol.IncomingCall.count() is applicable for argument types: () values: [] How do these methods get injected? There's no magic def statement in a controller that appears to do this. Or is the problem that Hibernate isn't available from my Service class?

• MVC - Loading DLL programmactically

  I'm trying to implement a plugable architecture in asp.net MVC. I have based my modules on the following article - http://www.wynia.org/wordpress/2008/12/aspnet-mvc-plugins. I have a DLL that contains a simple controller, and a view. The view is an embedded resource within the DLL. The problem I'm having is, if I drop the DLL in the bin directory of my MVC application manually, then everything works perfectly i.e. the assembly loads correctly. But when I copy the DLL from a file upload input box (via a web form) into the bin directoy, I get an error (The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest.) when trying to load the assembly. I use the same DLL, what could the problem be?

  I created a jaxws webservice, but it returns only some of the attributes of my objects in the response xml. • Problems with type and ext attribute of artifact

  Hi, I have following definition in ivy.xml <dependency org="southbeach" name="ego" rev="4.3.1" conf="properties->asterik" > <artifact name="ego" type="conf" ext="conf" conf="properties->asterik"/> </dependency> I have files with either extension conf or properties which i need at runtime, in ivysettings.xml, i have following: <filesystem name="privateFSa"> <artifact pattern="${localRepositoryLocation}/[artifact].[ext]" /> </filesystem> It always tries to look for ego.jar instead of ego.conf. can please somebody shed light on this? am i doing something wrong or ivy just supports tar,zip,gz, jar and not properties or conf files? I did workaround for now in ivysettings.xml <filesystem name="privateFSa"> <artifact pattern="${localRepositoryLocation}/[artifact].conf" /> </filesystem> but this doesnt looks good to hardcode conf there. • First Fluent NHibernate Project

  I'm trying to follow the "Your first project" tutorial at http://wiki.fluentnhibernate.org/Getting_started and have hit a roadblock. When I try to run the console application, I'm getting this error: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more detail. I have created a SQLite database "firstProject.db" and referenced the full path to the file in the call to: return Fluently.Configure() .Database(SQLiteConfiguration.Standard .UsingFile(DbFile)) .Mappings(m => m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssemblyOf<Program>()) .ExposeConfiguration(BuildSchema) .BuildSessionFactory(); so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.   I am struggling to find any resources on firefox extensions which construct a sidebar and put elements into them. plus tyhe other functionalities within a sidebar. I have made a emptysidebar. Now i need to display a dynamic array(which is formed using a JS function). I have absolutely no idea how to go about it. Can someone please help! this is the code of the sidebar page. I need a xul element like the menuitem where i can display a list of items. • Maven: Multiple class with the same path implemented in different jar

  I'm running into trouble with having multiple class with the same path (i.e. same name, same package!!!). For some reason, gwt-dev comes with its own version of org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl and javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory. At the same time, spring also depends on these classes but from different jar. I don't know what should be, but look like xalan & xml-api are the two dependencies that spring depends on (these dependency are optional) Funny thing is that eclipse can run the same code (it's a unit test) without problem, but surefire cannot. So I guess the problem is due to the way each runner consider the priority of each jar. Now come to the question: How can I setup my POM so that I can sure that when ever any code running inside my app, then class from a jar will be selected over class from other jar? Thanks.

  I am trying to view camera feed from a Logitech9000 camera using DSVL(DirectShow Video Library) http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsvideolib/. I tried changing the flip_v value to true in the config above but it did not make any difference. Any suggestions?

• $_POST goes empty after adding a new input type "file"

  Hi, I'm not finding a way to understand and fix this and I've done a lot. I've got a script, wish is a simple form, that sends a file trough POST. The second file, process the info. By default, I give to the user a few fields, one of them being a input field of type "file" and there's also, a few "hidden" one's, that gives me values to work with on POST. I found that, when adding a new input of type "file", the $_POST returns array 0, even $_FILES returns nothing. I have no idea how to fix this, and it works just fine when keeping the default input box of type "file". This is the form http://pastie.org/872488 This only happens when: Exists! var_dump( $_POST ), or $_FILES, print_r(), etc Returns nothing. I've tryed to create a array on the input of type "files", like img_p_child[], but nothing. How to solve this ? Thanks for taking your time!

• How can I use Amazon's API in PHP to search for books?

  I'm working on a Facebook app for book sharing, reviewing, and recommendations. I've scoured the web, searched Google using every search phrase I could think of, but I could not find any tutorials on how to access the Amazon.com API for book information. I signed up for an AWS account, but even the tutorials on their website didn't help me one bit. They're all geared toward using cloud computing for file storage and processing, but that's not what I want. I just want to access their API to search info on books. Kind of like how http://openlibrary.org/ does it, where it's a simple URL call to get information on a book (but their databases aren't nearly as populated as Amazon's). Why is it so damned hard to find the information I need on Amazon's AWS site? If anybody could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

• JQuery Tooltip and Scrollable Fix

  I have set up the navigation on my site using a scrollable div created with Flowplayer's JQuery tools. I also want to add a tooltip to the individual images within the scrollable div. The problem is the tooltip needs to appear outside of the div. I can adjust the height of the div so you can see the tooltip, but the tooltip is still constrained inside another div.   I inherited some code that uses the priority element under the root in its xml configuraiton. This is just like the example at http://iserialized.com/log4net-for-noobs/ which shows: <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="LogFileAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"/> </root> However, the log4net configuration examples at http://logging.apache.org/log4net/release/manual/configuration.html always show it using the level element: <root> <level value="DEBUG" /> <appender-ref ref="A1" /> </root> In this type of configuration is <priority> the same as <level> ? Can someone point me to somewhere in the docs where this is explained?

  We have a lot of spreadsheets (xls) in our subversion repository. These are usually edited with gnumeric or openoffice.org, and are mostly used to populate databases for unit testing with dbUnit. There are no easy ways of doing diffs on xls files that I know of, and this makes merging extremely tedious and error prone. I've found Spreadsheet Compare, but it requires Excel 2000 or later. I've also tried to convert the spreadsheets to xml and doing a regular diff, but it really feels as a last resort. Are there any tools for diffing two spreadsheets (xls or ods)? I am primarily looking for a multi-platform/open source tool.

  If you have the standard Javadoc for a few different projects, how can you process them to create a single unified set of documentation in which everything is cross-linked? Ideally, the result would be similar to the documentation for the various modules in the NetBeans Platform: http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/index.html but I've looked at their build scripts and they're predicated on you building everything from source. I'm looking for something which could also handle linking in Javadoc for third-party libraries, so I'd imagine it would need to be a post-processing operation. I can't be the first person to ever want this. Any ideas?

• Accept-Encoding headers being sent by browser but not received by server

  I have been trying to debug this for weeks. All of the browsers on all of the clients on my home network are sending 'Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate'. However, that header is somehow, somewhere being dropped before the request makes it to a web server. For example, http://www.whatsmyip.org/http_compression/ says 'No, your browser is not requesting compressed content'. I've used Fiddler to make sure that all of my browsers are indeed sending the header. I've swapped out my router. I've turned off all anti-virus software. Brighthouse/Roadrunner (the local cable ISP) says they are not doing any filtering (and I can't see why they would in this case). Any suggestions would be most welcome!

• Navigating multiples files vi editor

  According to http://www.lagmonster.org/docs/vi2.html the command :p would make vi go to the previous file. Unfortunately, this isn't working for me. However :n works and goes to the next page. What should I use to go to the previous file? For :p I get the message, Hit Return to continue and it stays in the same page. Thanks. Edit: I am sshing to an AIX box and using the vi in Ksh if that helps.

  I wish to uninstall the trail copy of VS 2008 Team System, as the trial is coming to its end. I had VS 2008 Professional Edition installed on the machine to start with and it still shows up in Add/Remove Problems. I am hoping that when I uninstall VS 2008 Team System I will be left with a working VS 2008 Professional Edition. When I try to uninstall VS 2008 Team System, I very quickly get an error dialog that says: A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components. Canceling setup. Help! Progress or lack there of so fare I have done dir %temp%*.log in a command prompt and can see any log files that are recent I am going to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Installer#Diagnostic_logging to see if I can get any logging Aaron Stebner's WebLog has a post on where VS put's is log files, he also has a post on were some other products put there log files gives some info about where VS setup puts it's logs etc Aaron Ruckman provided me with the solution after I sent him the log files.

• Scriptom (groovy) leaves Excel process running - am I doing something wrong?

  I am using the Scriptom extension to Groovy 1.7.0 to automate some processing using Excel 2007 under Windows XP. This always seems to leave an Excel process running despite my calling quit on the excel activeX object. (There is a passing reference to this phenomenon in the Scriptom example documentation too.) Code looks like: import org.codehaus.groovy.scriptom.ActiveXObject; def xls = new ActiveXObject("Excel.Application") xls.Visible = true // do xls stuff xls.Quit() The visible excel window does disappear but an EXCEL process is left in the task manager (and more processes pile up with each run of the script). There are no error message or exceptions. Can anyone explain why the Excel process is left behind and is there any way to prevent it from happening?

  I'm trying to compile a simple example of generic classes / type patterns (see http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/generic-classes.html) in Haskell but it won't compile. Any ideas about what's wrong with the code would be helpful. According to the documentation there should be a module Generics with the data types Unit, :*:, and :+: but ghc (6.12.1) complaints about Not in scope: data constructor 'Unit' etc. It seems like there's a package instant-generics with the data types :*:, :+: and U but when I import that module (instead of Generics) I get the error Illegal type pattern in the generic bindings {myPrint _ = ""} The complete source code is import Generics.Instant class MyPrint a where myPrint :: a -> String myPrint {| U |} _ = "" myPrint {| a :*: b |} (x :*: y) = "" (show x) ++ ":*:" ++ (show y) myPrint {| a :+: b |} _ = "" data Foo = Foo String instance MyPrint a => MyPrint a main = myPrint $ Foo "hi" and I compile it using ghc --make Foo.hs -fglasgow-exts -XGenerics -XUndecidableInstances P.S.
