• [MINI HOW-TO] Update Your Zune Player Software

  Keeping your computer and software up to date is very important in keeping everything running smooth and secure. It’s also important to keep your geeky gadgets updated as well. Here we take a look at updating a Zune HD. Note: In this example we’re updating a Zune HD out of the box which hasn’t been updated yet. The first thing you’ll need to do if you haven’t already is download and install the latest Zune software (link below). Now plug your Zune into your computer with the included USB connection cable and give it a moment to be recognized. Next launch the Zune Desktop software and you should get the following screen. Just accept the EULA… Then the update kicks off. Make sure not to disconnect the Zune while the update takes place. The update will take a few minutes, and after it’s complete you should be good to go and can start using your Zune. To update your player in the future, go to General Settings then Player Update. Just like your computer’s hardware and software, you want to keep your other geeky gadgets updated as well. This will help the device run more smoothly, and sometimes add additional functionality. • Whew.... what a week!

  Last week was a busy week for the UPK and Tutor teams at Oracle. It started with the the Collaborate Conference in Las Vegas and ended with our first UPK and Tutor Customer Advisory Board (CAB) meeting at Oracle HQ. The Collaborate Conference is a yearly event sponsored by three of the largest Oracle User Groups. • Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) • Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) • Quest - International User Group The User Groups are completely user run organizations with Oracle participation. If you've never attended a conference, time to start planning for the 2011 event in Orlando! If that's out of your reach, there are many regional and industry user groups that meet on a regular basis. They offer a great way to get involved, network with other users, and increase your knowledge around the Oracle applications. For a list of groups near you, check out the Oracle User Group Center. I'll add that the biggest meeting of Oracle users is at the Oracle Open World Conference in San Francisco in September, where we will have many UPK & Tutor focused development and customer sessions. More information on Oracle Open World will be forthcoming over the next few months. We hope to see many of you there! The CAB was a first for the UPK and Tutor team. Although we speak with customers regularly, this gave us an opportunity to meet in a more formal setting to discuss industry trends, business issues, and the direction of the products. Members serve a 2 year term and are required to attend 2 meetings per year, one in person, one via phone. We have some tweaking to do to our meeting format (most members wanted it to be longer!), but the overwhelming consensus was that it was a great success. There were many experiences and ideas shared and the wheels of the UPK and Tutor Development teams have been turning ever since. I'm sure you will see some of these discussions result in new product features over time. What a great week!

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to. • Eclipse dissapears when minimized and will not come back (12.04 Unity)

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 running Unity3d. I downloaded Eclipse from eclipse.org (not the software center) and created a desktop using gnome-desktop-item-edit. The resulting file is below, and I added it to the launcher on the left of the screen by dragging that file on. #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Icon[en_US]=/home/kevin/eclipse/icon.xpm Name[en_US]=Eclipse Exec=/home/kevin/eclipse/eclipse Name=Eclipse Icon=/home/kevin/eclipse/icon.xpm#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open However, when I minimize eclipse, eclipse disappears. There is no arrow to the left of the icon in the launcher like usual. And when I click on the launcher again, it tries to relaunch eclipse instead of bringing back the one that was minimized. Eclipse also does not show up when I alt-tab. I know it is still running because I can see it running with the system monitor. Note that Eclipse works properly until it is minimized. I have observed this behavior on two different computers now. Does anyone know how to fix it?

  In the last eight days the Oracle Technology Network Architect Day tour has stopped in Dallas, Anaheim (Disneyland, to be precise) , and at Oracle HQ in Redwood Shores,  CA. I was on-scene for the Dallas event, where I pulled a TMZ-style ambush on Chris Benedict from the Oracle Enterprise Solutions Group to capture this short video.     The other presenters escaped. • DC Comics Identifies Krypton on the Star Map

  This week Action Comics Superman #14 hits the stands and DC comics reveals the actual location of Kyrpton, delivered by none other than beloved astrophysicist Neil Tyson. Phil Plait at Bad Astronomy reports on the resolution of fans’ long standing curiosity about the location of Krypton: Well, that’s about to change. DC comics is releasing a new book this week – Action Comics Superman #14 – that finally reveals the answer to this stellar question. And they picked a special guest to reveal it: my old friend Neil Tyson. Actually, Neil did more than just appear in the comic: he was approached by DC to find a good star to fit the story. Red supergiants don’t work; they explode as supernovae when they are too young to have an advanced civilization rise on any orbiting planets. Red giants aren’t a great fit either; they can be old, but none is at the right distance to match the storyline. It would have to be a red dwarf: there are lots of them, they can be very old, and some are close enough to fit the plot. I won’t keep you in suspense: the star is LHS 2520, a red dwarf in the southern constellation of Corvus (at the center of the picture here). It’s an M3.5 dwarf, meaning it has about a quarter of the Sun’s mass, a third its diameter, roughly half the Sun’s temperature, and a luminosity of a mere 1% of our Sun’s. • Embedded linux Development learning

  I come from a windows background and i am proficient with the .net platform. For work, i need to bring up a custom embedded system platform. We have bought the pandaboard ES as the test platform. The application is to stream images over the wifi. If you think about it, we are building something similar to a netgear router - the only difference being when you log into the device it serves images. Because my background is in windows i am not quite sure how to start off with embedded linux development. in reading through various sites i have come to the conclusion that going to linux as development host is the best option. Can some one point to me in the right direction regarding the set up. I have a windows machine that will be used for development purposes. I can either do a virtual box or setup a partition for linux. But the finer details are what throwing me off..what i need to know is 1) once i install linux what other software do I need - Code blocks, 2) what about toolchain 3) How to debug - through serial port ? 4) Is there a way to send the image built directly to the CF card?   On this Monday morning my thoughts center on why is it so hard to embrace governance, any form of governance for that matter, be it software development governance, SOA governance, data governance, IT governance, so on a so fourth?Most customers that I meet tend to think that they don't need don't need governance as all is good within the enterprise. The question I generally pose to colleges and customers, is you have to think of governance as an insurance policy. Take of instance, if you just bought a new car, perhaps your "dream" car, would you drive it on the open streets without having the car insured? Probably not.Governance is what insurance is to new cars, be it to SOA, IT transformations and software development. Governance is a insurance policy against risk of failure. Now once I put it in this context, ask yourself, does governance have value to your organization? Most people now get it. Once the seed of governance is planted at the executive level of an organization, it becomes a exercise in planting an that idea into key personnel within the organization. • How to have other divs with a flash liquid layout that fits to the page?

  Basically the majority of my content is flash based. I designed it using Flash Builder (Flex) and Its in a liquid layout, (everything is in percents) and if im JUST embedding the flash content it scales to the page fine, and i have the flash content set to have a padding of 50 px. I put a header div in fine with no problems, but I have 2 problems, the first being the footer div seems to cover up the buttom of the flash content in IE, but it looks just fine in chrome. How can I solve this? I'm using the stock embed code that Flex provides, I tried to edit the css style for the div which I think is #flashContent and give it a min width and min height but it didnt seem to work, actually anything I did to #flashContent didn't seem to do anything, maybe its not the div i need to be adding that attribute to... And my other problem is I dont even know where to start when it comes to placing a div thats 280width by 600height colum to the right side of the flash content. If i could specify a size for the flash content, and the float it left, and float the colum right, and clear it with the container div id be just fine....But remember the flash content is set to 100% Scale (well techically 100%x80% because it looked better that way). Does anyone know how I can start to deal with creating a more complex scaleable flash layouts that includes other divs? ALL WELL MAINTAINING IE SUPPORT? IE is ruining my life.   The costs of technology assets can become significant and the need to centralize, monitor and control the contribution of each technology asset becomes a paramount responsibility for many organizations. Through the implementation of various mechanisms, it is possible to obtain a holistic vision and develop synergies between different assets, empowering their re-utilization and analyzing the impact on the organization caused by IT changes. When the SOA domain is considered, the issue of governance should therefore always come into play. Although SOA governance is mandatory to achieve any measure of SOA success, its value still passes incognito in most organizations, mostly due to the lack of visibility and the detached view of the SOA initiatives. There are a number of problems that jeopardize the visibility of these initiatives: Understanding and measuring the value of SOA governance and its contribution – SOA governance tools are too technical and isolated from other systems. • Shockwave Flash crashes with Chromium and Firefox

  Since updating to Ubuntu 13.10, Shockwave Flash does not work in Chromium or Firefox. Both show a "Shockwave Flash has crashed" dialog. Chromium 29.0.1547.65 After loading a page with a Flash video, I get this warning on the console twice: NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Operation not permitted).   I had a problem with my Ubuntu 12.04 waking up immediately after going into suspend. I solved the problem by changing the settings in /proc/acpi/wakeup, as suggested in this question: How do I prevent immediate wake up from suspend?. After changing the settings, the system goes flawlessly into suspend and stays suspended, but after I wake it back up, the settings in /proc/acpi/wakeup are different from what I set them to. Unfortunately it did not solve my problem. all of /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/wakeup /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb2/power/wakeup /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb3/power/wakeup /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb4/power/wakeup as well as /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-1/power/wakeup are set to disabled, and the notebook still wakes up by itself right after going to sleep. The only thing it seems to react to are the settings in /proc/acpi/wakeup, which keep changing (resetting) every time i power off/restart my notebook.

• Bootloader error Ubuntu 12.04, system goes to Grub-rescue instead of booting

  I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on my system but it is constantly giving me bootloader install fail error. I have tried to lot to solve this issue but reading articles over the internet but still no gain. Firstly since the bootloader was not getting installed I tried to install it on all the alternative paths given in the installer, failing with I selected install ubuntu without bootloader. Then I tried to manually install bootloader via terminal at try ubuntu via grub-install, but I was not able to do that. Then I tried using boot-repair and it was also not able to install the bootloader because after it my system shows grub-rescue. I tried to use boot-repair and install bootloader on a seperate partition mounted to /boot and still my system is booting and it still shows grub-rescue. The error which my system shows during boot is: Error : no such device : 04ac0510-bd4f-43b8-b885-b885-11c4dec21db8 I am not dual booting and ubuntu is the only OS I am installing. I am using Raid 0 with two blue western digital hard drive so I am not sure whether it is right or not. The details given by boot-repair are in the below mentioned link; http://paste.ubuntu.com/1147208/ Afterwards, I made one more change I installed ubuntu again and this time I installed the bootloader at a different partition on /boot. After this the bootloader error has gone but I am still not able to boot to ubuntu as I get the same error I was getting before. I have not installed dmraid, I feel it is neccessary for Raid0, but I thought ubuntu already has Raid drivers. Moreover in the dmraid installation instructions for 12.04, I used the one for 10.04 and selected to install bootloader at the partitions from the dropdown. This time the installation finished normally without an error but still I am not able to boot my system as the same error shows during booting this time also. Now I am stucked and I have no clue on how I can boot my system. Please tell me how can I boot my system.

• Unity 3D (with Nvidia driver) becomes very slow and laggy

  How can I prevent my Unity 3D desktop from becoming slow after a while, given that I have an Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 graphics in TwinView mode? The desktop starts out fast on login, but becomes slow / lagging / hesitant / high latency after a while, symptoms being spikes in CPU usage by /usr/bin/X whenever I cause any graphical activity with the mouse or keyboard (e.g. typing, changing tabs, dragging windows). The desktop remains slow even with all windows (except htop in Terminal) and extraneous processes killed. Detail: Changing tabs in Terminal takes about a second, and X spikes to 76% CPU. As I type into Firefox, X spikes to 95% CPU. Dragging Termiinal window, X goes to 70% CPU. Basically, every graphical action sends CPU usage of X through the roof. Device: Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 Driver package: binary driver nvidia-current-updates (280.13-0ubuntu5) Dual Monitors: Pair of DELL UltraSharp 1908FP in TwinView (X screen 2560x1024) OS: Fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 amd64 Desktop with all updates. • GRUB2 prompt instead of BURG boot screen after mistake during BURG installation

  I just installed BURG, but during the installation I made a mistake: after the package was installed, I got to some command-line based GUI for configuration, where I forgot to mark my (only) hard disk as the boot device before I hit OK. I tried to reinstall (apt-get purge burg && apt-get autoremove followed by apt-get install burg) but I wasn't able to get to the same screen again (I didn't find the GUI). When I now start my computer, I am taken to a GRUB2 prompt and no BURG (or GRUB2) boot menu is shown. Since I don't know any GRUB commands and I am helpless. How do I reinstall GRUB/BURG correctly? Update: I rebooted my computer, and got a BURG prompt (which appears to be the same thing as a GRUB prompt, but if there's a difference I wouldn't know it...). Edit n°1 installed xsane (via Ubuntu Software Center), launched it and get the following: Clicking on "Help" yields: I tried 4) man sane-dll which yields No manual entry for sane-dll I uninstalled "Simple Scan": didn't help. I tried 3) but aborted due to unsettling warning ;) wasn't that brave (or desperate). Maybe it's due to 1) and I'm stuck with it? Is it really not possible that a driver for either Windoze or Mac OS would also support scanning via Ubuntu? Edit n°2 Resorted to Windows XP and the Network TWAIN Driver ScanRouter or the "lite" version (which I found elsewhere) might also work (under Linux??); but it's more than I need. Thought about WINE, but also that seems to rely on SANE... So still no luck with this device's scanning capabilities with Linux (but good enough (via xp) for my purposes)...
