• Ubuntu 12.04 boot degraded raid

  I've installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 in a new server and set up the 4 hard drives with 3 RAID 1 devices, the configuration is such that the first two drives have md0 (swap space) and md1 (/) with the third and fourth drives having md2 (/var). I've been testing the operation under a drive failure and found that the system boots fine if I remove disk two but if I remove disk one then the system gets to grub and then just restarts. I'm confused as to why grub appears to be loading properly from disk two but then the boot fails. I've tried to copy the MBR from disk 1 to 2: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 but this didn't make a difference. • [Strange problem] ASP.NET MVC 2.0 RTM cannot work with VWD 2008 Express on a new Windows 7 Pro

  The MVC 2.0 RTM works great on my old Vista machine with VWD 2008 Express, but I just bought a new computer with Windows 7 Pro, installed VWD 2008 Express SP1 and MVC 2.0 RTM by using Web PI 2.0. but after installation, I found the VWD doesn't have any MVC options, that means I can't either create new MVC projects or compile existing MVC projects. Why? What other steps I need to do to make it work? I'm sure the MVC has been installed properly since my MVC site on the new computer works well (so the IIS side has no problem), just the VWD can't 'realize' that the MVC framework is already installed... (tried to uninstall and install many times, but won't work)

• Email can't be sent to my domain

  Hi Folks, Basically I have my domain howcode.com bought at DomainMonster.com. I have set it all up to point to MediaTemple nameservers and everything works - mostly - fine. I have registered an email address [email protected]. The setup is, I presume, working correctly. I can successfully send emails with the account. And I presume I can receive them - but the problem is, nobody can send them to me. Emailing from a regular, non-Googlemail account appears to work fine but it never arrives in the inbox. But when you email from a GoogleMail address, an error message is instantly returned saying this: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: [email protected] Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. • Trying to compile VS2008 project on Win 64 bit which is custom Powershell PSSnapin

  Library Project compiles fine for ANY CPU in VS2008 running on Win 7 64 -bit. Now in the post build following command fails when attemptiong to register library dll: PS C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 .\installutil C:\path\Project.dll Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\path\Project.dll' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.. Do I need to compile the project as x64 I was under impression that AnyCPU will take care of it. Alo my library does have dependencies. Do they also need to be compiled as x64 bit? Any help is appreciated.

• How to stop a random ramp in FCGI Processes Killing the server

  So got the below earlier to day... Around that time the logs show a ramp in processes(600) and associated memory (1.2g), cpu usage load average (80) untill the server gave out. Server had to be hard reset by host as there was no ssh or plesk panel access. Fast CGI is configured as below and is setup for one high use site. As I understand it FcgidMaxProcesses 20 should protect against what happen but has not. I've read many forums with differing answers and references to many different fcgi directives, but have found nothing conclusive. Any one got some definitive answers on how to stop this sort of server process ramping and subsequent server failure? If you need more info let me know. • WiX - create a bootstrap that passes arguments to the msiexec

  I need to create a bootstrap for my WiX project I've tried using setupbld.exe but it will only allow me to create an executable that will show my UI or one that will behave as a silent installer but not both. I need to be able to run the resulting executable with argument that will tell it wether or not to show the UI during installation. I've found this post by John Robbins that explains how to re-build the setup.exe stub used in the creation of the bootstrap but I was hoping there is a simpler way to do what I need. Does anyone know of a way to create a bootstrap that I use to run either as a simple (with UI) install or as a silent install.

• How to have a PHP Website tool with a version check

  Hi, So I work on a small php website tool that a few people use and what I'm looking to have added is a little version checker in it. The tool is normally hosted by others on different servers/domains/whatever have you so I'm having a bit of a trouble figuring out how I can accomplish this and do so in the best possible method. So what I'm looking to do is have a webpage that just has a number on it which is the latest version. Lets say 3.2.2 is displayed on www.myawesomephptool.com/version.html in some way shape or form . Now on their installation when they open up their admin page it pulls in that 3.2.2 as the latest version to see if they are on that version. So trying to keep it simple on requirements too. • Installing Wordpress - constant PHP/MySQL extension appears missing

  I've got Win2003 w/IIS6, PHP 5 and MySQL installed. I can confirm PHP is installed correctly because I have a testMe.php that runs properly. When I run the Wordpress setup, I get informed that Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress. But in my PHP.ini in the DYNAMIC EXTENSIONS section I have extension=php_mysql.dll extension=php_mysqli.dll I verified that mysql.dll and libmysql.dll are both in my PHP directory. I copied my libmysql.dll to the C:\Windows\System32 directory. When I try to run the initial setup for WordPress, I get this answer. I've Googled setting this up, and everything comes down to the above. I'm missing something, but none of the instructions that I've found online seem to cover whatever that is.

• XCode 3.2 - can't create Objective-C class

  My installation of XCode 3.2 has begun to exhibit some strange behaviour. When I try to add a basic Objective-C classs (inheriting from NSObject), in my iPhone project, I get the following popup: "Alert. Couldn't load the next page". The above-mentioned error happens at the point of trying to create the file (i.e. the creation process doesn't get to the stage where you are asked to input the file name). It might also be worth mentioning that where there previously used to be a description for the file (in the file creation window) it now states "No description available". I can create other files (e.g. UIViewController subclass etc.) but not the basic Objective-C class. I have updated the documentation and restarted the machine and xcode several times without success. I would be extremely grateful for any assistance as I am relatively new to the XCode environment.

• Building a Java EE app on Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Glassfish 3

  I'm having a bit of a problem building a Java Enterprise Edition web application on Mac OS X 10.6.2 using Ant 1.7.1, Glassfish v3 and Java EE 6. The problem is that the build process does not find the Java EE libraries which fair enough as I don't think Apple supply them with the default Java installation but I know they exist in the Glassfish distribution. Which jars are the correct ones to build against (I'm assuming javaee.jar is a general jar which references all the other needed jars) and what should I be putting in my ant build.xml file? Any help is very much appreciated.

  Hi, We're experiencing a strange problem with Oracle RAC and McAfee anti-virus. As part of the installation of the Oracle RAC we disable anti virus as directed. We have had our RAC running fine, but when we came to re-enable the AV and reboot we got the BSOD. Abnormal Program Termination (BugCheck, STOP: 0x00000035 (0x8E984678, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS Following the standard process of raising this problem with Microsoft they identify the problem and also a fix. Microsoft talk about too many file filter drivers being present and pushing the DFS upper limit beyond the default size. Upping this value, as per msdn, has no impact. We're able to recover from this BSOD by disabling AV. We don't have the problem if we run the AV service manually whilst the system is up. However, if we make the service automatic we fail to boot. • DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

  Hello, I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD. • Is real-time or synchronous replication possible over WAN link?

  The company I work for is looking to implement truly real-time file replication with file locking over a WAN link that spans over 2000 miles. We currently have a 16-drive SAN setup in our east coast office. We also have an office out in Colorado that will have the same exact SAN setup. The idea is to have those two SANs contain the same exact data at all times, which will allow us to work with the same data pool, and which will also provide use with an offsite backup solution, should a failure occur on either end. We're running Server 2008. The objective is to enable users in the east coast office to work on files and have those changes be instantly updated on the Colorado SAN as well. We also need there to be file locking so that there will be no conflicts or overwritten changes if users attempt to work on the same file. Is this scenario even possible, at speeds that would make the files usable? And if so, what software would we need to pull this off? As I understand it, DFS-R does not provide file locking, so if we used that, we would need to go with a third-party product like Peerlock. But I don't even know if DFS-R is an option. Can it replicate quickly enough over a WAN link? Can any product? It seems that if we were to use synchronous replication, the programs would be unacceptably slow, as every write would have to wait for confirmation from the other end of the link. But if we used asynchronous replication, what kind of latency would we be looking at? There is a product from GlobalScape called WAFS that claims to provide "File coherence with real-time file locking, file release, and synchronization" and says that "As files are modified, changes are mirrored instantly using intelligent byte-level differencing to minimize the impact on network bandwidth". So this sounds like synchronous replication, but that doesn't even seem possible, given physical limitations such as the speed of light. If anyone has any experience with this kind of setup, or knows whether it's even possible, I'd appreciate your input and suggestions, including recommendations for software that we should check out.

• Mac OS X, Can't start/stop MySQL via System Preferences

  I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

• Using Linux vs Windows for development

  On my servers I run everything on Linux/ Apache, but for offline preparation before upload of the projects I'm using Windows (Vista) with a local Apache/ WAMP, PHP, Python, GD_image installation and so on. My question, would it be much easier in terms of setting up a good environment if I were to use Linux, e.g. Ubuntu distribution, as development OS for these things? Would you know some pros and cons when it comes to Windows vs Linux in terms of web development? (As I'm using mostly web apps these days, switching the OS might be less of a problem. I would need a good replacement for my image editor, though, as I prefer Corel PhotoPaint and PSP4 over Gimp, last time I tried.)

  Installshield 2009 Premier Basic MSI: When I uninstall there is a Message Box saying that explorer has to be closed: [Title] My-Product-Name [List] Explorer [radio button 1, Selected by default] Automatically close applications and attempt to restart them after setup is complete [radio button 2] Do not close applications. (A Reboot will be required) [Ok Button] [Cancel Button] If I click OK [with radio button 1 selected] all opened folders are closed !!! How to get rid of this, I don't want any warning message box to show and not close explorer either? More info: I have a dll which is used to show explorer context menu with icons when we right click on any file/folder. This dll is registered during installation and unregistered during uninstall. When we uninstall WinRAR we don't see any such messages, do we?

• portlet 2.0 (jsr286) development with spring

  Hi! We are discussing whether it's a good idea to switch from plain portlet development on a liferay installation to spring webmvc portlet based development. We're starting the development of some portlets soon, so now is the time. But the problem I see is that we'd like to use some of the portlet 2.0 features, which won't work with versions older than spring 3.0. (Right?) Has anyone insight, if it's worth the waiting? (When is 3.0 scheduled anyway?) Is the current milestone stable enough? Our first real release will be in the last quarter of the year, so the springsource guys have some time left to get a final out of the door... ;-) Any ideas?

• Tilecache standalone server with nginx in production environment

  Hi, I am really new to tilecache. I would like to know how good is the tilecache http server that comes with the tilecache installation. Is it practical to deploy it behind nginx in production environment? (i.e. nohup tilecache_http_server.py -p 8000 & and then editting the nginx.conf). The VPS we are using has nginx installed already so I thought that would be the easiest for me. However, how practical/efficient is it?

  I am trying to get a value from the meta data that is stored in the wp_signups table for a Wordpress MU / BuddyPress installation. I see it's stored in the meta field as s:3:"age";s:2:"25"; ...which is age = 25 I put the information there using $usermeta['age'] = $_POST['signup_age']; in a plugin subscribing the the bp_signup_usermeta filter. I need to get it back during a function subscribing to bp_before_activate_content. How can I do this? Whats the function call? (searched documentation to no avail)

  Hi all, I have a working WAMP environment (Apache Friends). I decided to try Subversion and downloaded CollabNetSubversion-server-1.6.9-1.win32.exe. On the download page there were packages including Apache server which I did not use - because I didn't want to replace my current Apache installation. I just installed the one that did not include Apache, and now I want to configure it to work with my current Apache. What should I do? Is there an easy step by step tutorial to explain this?
