  • Date based sum in Excel / Google Docs spreadsheets

    I have a bunch of rows with a date and a dollar amount (expenses). I want to produce a list of the days of the month and what the balance of the expenses is. So, for example the 5th entry in the list would be 8/5/2008 and the sum of all the expenses that occurred on or before 8/5/2008. Approximately this is =sumif(D4:D30-A5,">0",E4:E30) but of course that doesn't work (where the source data is dates in D4:D30 and the expenses are in E4:E30). Notes source data can't be sorted for various reasons. must work in google spreadsheets, which is a fairly complete subset of excel's functions.

  • get a range of objects with binary search

    I have some data like this: ID Value 1 AAA 1 ABC 2 dasd 2 dsfdsf 2 dsfsd 3 df 3 dwqef they are objects(not plain text). and i want to get all objects with the ID = 2. I can do a binary binary search and get the index 3,but how can i get (2 and 4) is there any efficient algorithm? the real problem has lists with about one Million items. any language except bf and lisp can help.

    Hi, I have an ajax calendar control that I specified the date format to be yyyy-MM-dd. Is it possible to have the comparevalidator validate that type of date sepcifically and have it fail for everything else? right now it seems to only take dd-MM-yyyy. Thanks.

    What is the best way to produce several tables of unknown size on the same worksheet? Values will be pulled from an oracle database and are used as values on several tables. Is it possible to create dynamic named ranges or is some other method desirable? I have some experience with c# but do not have access to VSTO 2005. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to explain the problem further if requested.

    Lets say I've got two squares and I know their positions, a red and blue square: redTopX; redTopY; redBotX; redBotY; blueTopX; blueTopY; blueBotX; blueBotY; Now, I want to check if square blue resides (partly) within (or around) square red. This can happen in a lot of situations, as you can see in this image I created to illustrate my situation better: Note that there's always only one blue and one red square, I just added multiple so I didn't have to redraw 18 times. My original logic was simple, I'd check all corners of square blue and see if any of them are inside square red: if ( ((redTopX >= blueTopX) && (redTopY >= blueTopY) && (redTopX <= blueBotX) && (redTopY <= blueBotY)) || //top left ((redBotX >= blueTopX) && (redTopY >= blueTopY) && (redBotX <= blueBotX) && (redTopY <= blueBotY)) || //top right ((redTopX >= blueTopX) && (redBotY >= blueTopY) && (redTopX <= blueBotX) && (redBotY <= blueBotY)) || //bottom left ((redBotX >= blueTopX) && (redBotY >= blueTopY) && (redBotX <= blueBotX) && (redBotY <= blueBotY)) //bottom right ) { //blue resides in red } Unfortunately, there are a couple of flaws in this logic.   • How do you create a SQL query in Excel 2007 with a dynamic date range?

    I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query. SELECT FloatTable.DateAndTime, TagTable.TagName FROM master.dbo.FloatTable FloatTable, master.dbo.TagTable TagTable WHERE FloatTable.TagIndex = TagTable.TagIndex AND ((FloatTable.DateAndTime={ts '2012-06-01 00:00:00'})) Any assistance would be much appreciated.   • ExplorerCanvas and JQuery

    I am working on a Javascript app (CloudGraph) that uses HTML5 canvas and JQuery. I'm using ExplorerCanvas to support canvas in IE. I recently came across an interesting problem. What I was trying to do is restore the user's settings when the page is loaded. I read some information from a cookie that I set the last time the user accessed the application. One of these settings is the size of the canvas. I decided that the best place to do this would be when the document is ready using JQuery $(document).ready(). This worked fine in browsers that natively support the canvas element. But in IE it kept getting errors the first time I would hit the page. It seemed that the excanvas element wasn't initialized yet because I was getting null reference and unknown properties errors. If I refreshed the page the errors went away but the resized canvas wasn't drawing on the entire area of the canvas. It was like the clipping rectangle was still set to the default canvas size. I found that the canvas element when using excanvas has a div child element which is where the actual drawing takes place. When I changed the width and height of the canvas element in document.ready it didn't change the width and height of the child div. Initially my solution was to also change the div element when changing the canvas element and that worked. But then I realized that having to refresh the page every time I started the app in IE really sucked. That wouldn't be acceptable for users. Since it seemed like the canvas wasn't getting initialized before I was trying to use it I decided to try to initialize my app at a different time. I figured the next best place was in the onload event. Sure enough, moving my initialization to onload fixed all of the problems. So, it looks like the canvas shouldn't be manipulated until the onload event when using ExplorerCanvas. There might be ways to do it when the document is ready. I found some posts on initializing excanvas manually, but for me waiting until onload worked just fine.

I'm not interested in how creating plugin for jQuery (so no jQuery code here at all). I'm interested in a simple explanation (maybe with a bit of Javascript code) to explain how it is done the plugin concept.   • Find value within a range in lookup table

    I have the simplest problem to implement, but so far I have not been able to get my head around a solution in Python. I have built a table that looks similar to this one: 501 - ASIA 1262 - EUROPE 3389 - LATAM 5409 - US I will test a certain value to see if it falls within these ranges, 389 -> ASIA, 1300 -> LATAM, 5400 -> US. A value greater than 5409 should not return a lookup value. I normally have a one to one match, and would implement a dictionary for the lookup. But in this case I have to consider these ranges, and I am not seeing my way out of the problem. Maybe without providing the whole solution, could you provide some comments that would help me look in the right direction? It is very similar to a vlookup in a spreadsheet. I would describe my Python knowledge as somewhere in between basic to intermediate. Many thanks in advance.
