• Trouble getting started with Spring Roo and GWT

  Hi all, I am trying to get started with SpringRoo and GWT after seeing the keynote.. unfortunately I am stuck at this issue. • python-xmpp and looping through list of recipients to receive and IM message

  I can't figure out the problem and want some input as to whether my Python code is incorrect, or if this is an issue or design limitation of Python XMPP library. I'm new to Python by the way. Here's snippets of code in question below. What I'd like to do is read in a text file of IM recipients, one recipient per line, in XMPP/Jabber ID format. This is read into a Python list variable. I then instantiate an XMPP client session and loop through the list of recipients and send a message to each recipient. Then sleep some time and repeat test. This is for load testing the IM client of recipients as well as IM server. There is code to alternately handle case of taking only one recipient from command line input instead of from file. What ends up happening is that Python does iterate/loop through the list but only last recipient in list receives message. Switch order of recipients to verify.   I'm trying to get the following html out of Zend_Form <div class="group wat-cf"> <div class="left"> <label class="label right">Username</label> </div> <div class="right"> <input type="text" class="text_field"> </div> </div> Using the following code: $username->setAttrib("class", "text_field") ->setDecorators(array( 'ViewHelper', 'Description', 'Errors', array(array('data'=>'HtmlTag'), array('tag' => 'div', 'class' => 'right')), array('Label', array('tag' => 'div', 'class' => 'label right')), array(array('row'=>'HtmlTag'),array('tag'=>'div', 'class' => 'group wat-cf')) )); I can get the next fragment <div class="group wat-cf"> <div id="username-label"> <label for="username" class="label right required">Username:</label> </div> <div class="right"> <input type="text" name="username" id="username" value="" class="text_field"> </div> </div> so apart from some extra id's and required classes i don't mind, i need to get a class "left" on div id="username-label" Now adding class to the Label line, gets the class added on the element. I also don't see and option to do this in the Label decorator code itself. So i need a custom Label decorator, or is there some other way i'm missing?

• What is the proper way to align UITableViewCells when only some have an imageView?

  Hello all, I am new to iPhone programming and working on my first real application (i.e. one not written in a book or online) and I've run into a small problem which I could solve a multitude of ways, but feel like there should be a good solution that perhaps I am just missing. Here is the scenario: I have a UITableView with a bunch of standard UITableViewCells in it. What I want to do is toggle a green check mark when the cell is selected and I have that part working (note: I'm already using the accessoryType for something else, so I can't use it for the checkmark...besides, it's not as pretty). Unfortunately, when I toggle the checkmark like so: if (...) { cell.imageView.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"checkmark.png"]; } else { cell.imageView.image = nil; } It makes the cell's label bounce back and forth depending on whether it is checked or not. What is the proper way to align the cell's text (set via cell.textLabel.text) regardless of whether or not it has an image set? The solutions I have come up with are: Create a blank 40x40 png image in Photoshop and set the unchecked to that Create a blank 40x40 image solely in code Set some setting that I don't know about that will align it for me Create a subclass of UITableCellView that does what I need (which would be stupid, I'd just go with option 1...) Suggestions? Thoughts? Comments? Thank you very much :-) P.S. I'd like the solution to work with OS 3.0 and 4.0 if that makes any sort of difference.

  Hi, I've got two tables. Invoice with columns CustomerID, InvoiceDate, Value, InvoiceTypeID (CustomerID and InvoiceDate make up a composite key) and InvoiceType with InvoiceTypeID and InvoiceTypeName columns. I know I can create my objects like: public class Invoice { public virtual int CustomerID { get; set; } public virtual DateTime InvoiceDate { get; set; } public virtual decimal Value { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceType InvoiceType { get; set; } } public class InvoiceType { public virtual InvoiceTypeID { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceTypeName { get; set; } } So the generated sql would look something like: SELECT CustomerID, InvoiceDate, Value, InvoiceTypeID FROM Invoice WHERE CustomerID = x AND InvoiceDate = y SELECT InvoiceTypeID, InvoiceTypeName FROM InvoiceType WHERE InvoiceTypeID = z But rather that having two select queries executed to retrieve the data I would rather have one. I would also like to avoid using child object for simple lookup lists. So my object would look something like: public class Invoice { public virtual int CustomerID { get; set; } public virtual DateTime InvoiceDate { get; set; } public virtual decimal Value { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceTypeID { get; set; } public virtual InvoiceTypeName { get; set; } } And my sql would look something like: SELECT CustomerID, InvoiceDate, Value, InvoiceTypeID FROM Invoice INNER JOIN InvoiceType ON Invoice.InvoiceTypeID = InvoiceType.InvoiceTypeID WHERE CustomerID = x AND InvoiceDate = y My question is how do I create the mapping for this? • Looking for streaming xml pretty printer in C/C++ using expat or libxml2

  I'm looking for a streaming xml pretty printer for C/C++ that's either self contained or that uses libxml2 or expat. I've searched a bit and not found one. It seems like something that would be generally useful. Am I missing an obvious tool that does this? Background: I have a library that outputs xml without whitespace all on one line. In some cases I'd like to pretty print that output. I'm looking for a BSD-ish licensed C/C++ library or sample code that will take a raw xml byte stream and pretty print it. Here's some pseudo code showing one way that I might use this functionality: void my_write(const char* buf, int len); PrettyPrinter pp(bind(&my_write)); while (...) { // ... get some more xml ... const char* buf = xmlSource.get_buf(); int len = xmlSource.get_buf_len(); int written = pp.write(buf, len); // calls my_write with pretty printed xml // ... error handling, maybe call write again, etc. ... } I'd like to avoid instantiating a DOM representation. I already have dependencies on the expat and libxml2 shared libraries, and I'd rather not add any more shared library dependencies.

• Efficient alternative to merge() when building dataframe from json files with R?

The fromJSON() function reads in the data as lists of lists. Each element of the list is a person, which then contains a list of the attributes for that person. For example: [[1]] person_id name gender hair_color [[2]] person_id name location gender height [[...]] structure(list(person_id = "Amy123", name = "Amy", gender = "F", hair_color = "brown"), .Names = c("person_id", "name", "gender", "hair_color")) structure(list(person_id = "matt53", name = "Matt", location = structure(c(47231, "IN"), .Names = c("zip_code", "state")), gender = "M", height = 172), .Names = c("person_id", "name", "location", "gender", "height")) The end result of the code above is matrix where the columns are every person-attribute that appears in the structure above, and the rows are the relevant values for each person. As you can see though, some data is missing for some of the people, so I need to ensure those show up as NA and make sure things end up in the right columns. Further, location itself is a vector with two components: state and zip_code, meaning it needs to be flattened to location.state and location.zip_code before it can be merged with another person record; this is what I use unlist() for. I then keep the running master table in people_data. The above code works, but do you know of a more efficient way to accomplish what I'm trying to do? It appears the merge() is slowing this to a crawl... I have hundreds of files with hundreds of people in each file. Thanks! Bryan

• Problems running Ruby on Rails apps on shared hosted server

  I have problems installing any Ruby On Rails app on my shared hosted server. Mongrel shows html as plain text for all pages. The problem occurs for any app, even if I create a test empty app and add a scaffolded view without changing anything. It appears that the Mongrel crashes when trying to put cookies to the response header. The HTTP header looks incomplete, the Content-type and other parameters are missing: curl 127.0.0.1:12002/users -I HTTP/1.1 200 OK Connection: close Date: Wed, 26 May 2010 09:46:50 GMT Content-Length: 0 Here is the output from mongrel.log Error calling Dispatcher.dispatch #<NoMethodError: You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! • Improving method to read signed 8-bit integers from hexadecimal.

  Scenario: I have a string of hexadecimal characters which encode 8-bit signed integers. Each two characters represent a byte which employ the leftmost (MSB) bit as the sign (rather than two's complement). I am converting these to signed ints within a loop and wondered if there's a better way to do it. There are too many conversions and I am sure there's a more efficient method that I am missing.   The problem is very simple. An object needs to notify some events that might be of interest to observers. When I sat to validate a design that I cooked up now in Ruby just to validate it.. I find myself stumped as to how to implement the object events. In .Net this would be a one-liner.. .Net also does handler method signature verification,etc. e.g. // Object with events public delegate void HandlerSignature(int a); public event HandlerSignature MyEvent; public event HandlerSignature AnotherCriticalEvent; // Client MyObject.MyEvent += new HandlerSignature(MyHandlerMethod); // MyHandlerMethod has same signature as delegate Is there an EventDispatcher module or something that I am missing that I can strap on to a Ruby class ? Hoping for an answer that plays along with Ruby's principle of least surprise. An event would be the name of the event plus a queue of [observer, methodName] objects that need to be invoked when the event takes place.

• iPhone SDK: loading UITableView from SQLite

  Hi, I think I got a good handle on UITableViews and on getting/inserting data from/to SQLite db. I am straggling with an architectural question. My application saves 3 values int the database, there can be many/many rows. However would I load them in the table? From all the tutorials I have seen, at one point entire database is loaded in the NSMutableArray or similar object via performing SELECT statement. Then when -(UITableViewCell *) tableView: (UITableView *) tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath: (NSIndexPath *) indexPath called, rows required are dolled out from the previous loaded NSMutableArray (or similar stracture). But what i have have thousands for rows? Why would I pre-load them? Should I just query database each time cellForRowAtIndexPath is called? If so, what would I use as an index? Each row in the table will have an AUTOINCREMENT index, but since some rows may be deleted index will not correspond to rows in the table (in the SQL I may have something like this with row with index 3 missing): 1 Data1 Data1 2 Data2 Data2 4. data3 data3 Thanks

  Hi, I'm at the point where I'm starting to grasp contravariance, although I'm trying to work out what the advantage is when an interface can be used instead. Obviously I'm missing something. • I/O between AIR client using Native process and executable java .jar

  I am using Adobe AIR 2.0 native process API to launch a java executable jar. I/O is handled by writing to the input stream of the java process and reading from the output stream. The application is event based where several events are fired from the server. We catch these events in java code, handle them and write the output to the outputstream using the synchronized static method below. public class ReaderWriter { static Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(ReaderWriter.class); public synchronized static void writeToAir(String output){ try{ byte[] byteArray = output.getBytes(); DataOutputStream dataOutputStream = new DataOutputStream(System.out); dataOutputStream.write(byteArray); dataOutputStream.flush(); } catch (IOException e) { logger.info("Exception while writing the output. " + e); } } } The issue is that some messages are lost between the transfer and not all messages reach the AIR client. If I run the java application from the console I am receiving all the messages. It would be great if somebody could point out what I am missing. • 'echo' or drop out of 'programming' write HTML then start PHP code again

  For the most part, when I want to display some HTML code to be actually rendered I would use a 'close PHP' tag, write the HTML, then open the PHP again. eg <?php // some php code ?> <p>HTML that I want displayed</p> <?php // more php code ?> But I have seen lots of people who would just use echo instead, so they would have done the above something like <?php // some php code echo("<p>HTML that I want displayed</p>"); // more php code ?> Is their any performance hit for dropping out and back in like that? I would assume not as the PHP engine would have to process the entire file either way. What about when you use the echo function in the way that dose not look like a function, eg echo "<p>HTML that I want displayed</p>" I would hope that this is purely a matter of taste, but I would like to know if I was missing out on something. I personally find the first way preferable (dropping out of PHP then back in) as it helps draw a clear distinction between PHP and HTML and also lets you make use of code highlighting and hinting for your HTML, which is always handy.

Question - What is the best way in my WinForms application to set things up for NInject (i.e. what are the few lines of code required). I'm assuming this would go into the MainForm Load method. • Font not showing bullet points

• Custom UIButton for Iphone.

  I have an view in my App which has a number of buttons based on the number of items returned by the server. So if the server returns say 10 items, there should be 10 buttons and clicking on each button should call a different person. • Ubiquity CmdUtils.setSelection won't replace HTML

  I'm attempting to write a Ubiquity command that allows you to replace a selected link or URL pointing to an image with that image itself. However, the CmdUtils.setSelection() function (documented here) seems to do nothing if any html tags are present in the selection, making it useless for replacing any links. When selecting plain text, it functions exactly as intended, replacing the text with an <img src="text"/> tag. Is there something I'm missing, or will this function simply not allow me to replace html? If the latter is the case, is there a function or method that will allow me to do this? Any other advice is welcome as well! • Flex: FileReference and Image unhandled IOErrorEvent

  The following code shows a button that allows you to select a file (should be an image) and display it into an image component. When I select an invalid image (e.g. a word document), I get the following error: "Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2124: Loaded file is an unknown type." I know I can pass a FileFilter to the FileReference:browse call, but that's beyond the point. My question is... • CLR Stored Procedures

  In an ASP.NET application, I have a small number of fairly complex, frequently used operations to execute against a database. In these operations, one or more of several tables needs updates or inserts based a logical evaluation of both input parameters and values of certain tables. I've maintained a separation of logic and data access, so the operation currently looks like this: Request received from client Business layer invokes data layer to retrieve data from database Business layer processes result and determines which operation to execute Business layer invokes appropriate data operation Response sent to client As you can see, the client is kept waiting while two separate requests are made to the database. In searching for a solution to this, I've found CLR Stored Procedures, but I'm not sure if I have the right idea about what they are useful for. I have written a replacement for the code above which especially places steps 2-4 in a CLR SP. My understanding is that the SP will be executed locally by SQL Server and result in only one call being made to the server. My initial benchmark tests show this is actually orders of magnitude slower than my original code, but I attribute that recompilation of the code I have not worked out yet and/or some flaw in my environment. My question is basically, is this the intended use of CLR SPs or am I missing something? I realize this is a bit of a compromise structurally, so if there's a better way to do it I'd love to hear it.

• Need Help with SQL Subquery

  Hey: I am trying to write a query that will return all orders that only have a Subscription included. It is easy enough to write a query that includes all Orders with Subscriptions, another that includes all orders without a Subscription and then compare them with an unmatched query. But I don't want to have to store Queries in my Access database, I prefer to have it all in my ASP code, and I can't get this to work with just one complex query.
