• How do you backup 40+ Centos5.5 servers?

  We are embarrassed to ask this question. Apologies for our lack of UNIX expertise. We have inherited 40+ centos 5.5 servers, and don't know how to back them up. We need low level clone type images so that we could restore the servers from scratch if we had to replace the HDs etc. We have used the "dd" command, but we assume this only works if you want to back up one local disk to another, not 40 servers to one server with an external USB HD attached. All 40 servers have a pair of mirrored disks (dont know if its HW or SW raid). Most only have 100MB used. SErvers are running apache, zend, tomcat, mysql etc. Ideally we dont want to have to shut them down to backup (but could). We assume that standard unix commands like tar, cpio, rsync, scp etc. are of no use as they only copy files, not partitions, all attributes, groups etc. i.e. do not produce a result which can simply be re-imaged to a new HD to get the serer back from dead. We have a large SAN, a spare windows box and spare unix boxes, but these are only visible to one layer in the network. We have an unused Dell DL2000 monster tape unit, but no sw or documentation for it. WE have a copy of symantec backup exec, but we have no budget for unix client licenses. (The company has negative amounts of money). We need to be able to initiate the backup remotely, as we can only access the servers in person in an emergency (i.e. to restore) Googling returns some applications to do this, e.g. clonezilla - looks difficult to install and invasive. Mondo, only seems to support backup if you are local to the machine. Amanda might be an option, but looks like days/weeks of work to learn and setup? Is there anything built into Centos, or do we have to go the route of installing, learning and configuring a set of backup softwares? Any ideas? This must be a pretty standard problem which goggling doesnt give an obvious answer.

• Object to Network serialization - with an existing protocol

  I'm writing a client for a server program written in C++. As is not unusual, all the networking protocol is in a format where packets can be easily memcopied into/out of a C++ structure (1 byte packet code, then different arrangements per packet type). I could do the same thing in C#, but is there an easier way, especially considering lots of the data is fixed-length char arrays that I want to play with as strings? Or should I just suck it up and convert types as needed? I've looked at using the ISerializable interface, but it doesnt look as low level as is required.

• How to index and search .doc files

  I have an application that needs to have .doc files uploaded to it. These documents should then be index and the whole collection of documents should be searchable. This will run on a Windows Server, without Word installed, using IIS and SqlServer, but I'd rather not be tied to SqlServer's full text indexing. I was thinking of using Lucene.Net for the indexing part and was wondering what the best way to get the text out of the .doc files would be. I could probably extract the text by reading in the whole stream and then using a regEx to pull out any regular characters, but that seems hefty and prone to error. I saw an article on using iFilters that sounds promising, but I thought I'd put this out there since it's not something I'm familiar with. P.S. If it matters, these .doc files will have mail-merge fields in them and there's no other current alternative for the .doc format.

• How to read a column in a tab-delimited Excel file in C#?

  I have some data of an excel file below. At first, I figured that reading from the file could be done using the Excel Library then using an OLEDB connection. I managed to get the DocumentNo column data with the OLEDB approach. However, when the excel file is closed, I am unable to do the operation because it gives an error that "External table is not in the expected format." • Powershell equivilent of python's if __name__ == '__main__':

  I am really fond of python's capability to do things like this: if __name__ == '__main__': #setup testing code here #or setup a call a function with parameters and human format the output #etc... This is nice because I can treat a Python script file as something that can be called from the command line but it remains available for me to import its functions and classes into a separate python script file easily without triggering the default "run from the command line behavior". Does Powershell have a similar facility that I could exploit? And if it doesn't how should I be organizing my library of function files so that i can easily execute some of them while I am developing them?

If it was just one sheet, I'd use the Excel/csv content type, but I've heard something about an XML format that can represent an entire workbook. I don't want to go down the Packaging and .xlsx route, so I need standard .xls. Our bug tracker, Gemini, used to have an export function that produced an XML file that Excel automatically opened as a multi-sheet workbook, but I can't find it. Is there still such a mechanism, and where can I find that schema?

  I have some data from a database (SQLite), mapping a value (an integer) to a date. A date is a string with this format: YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm. The dates are not uniformly distributed. I want do draw a line graph with the dates on X and the values on Y. What is the easiest way to do this with Perl? I tried DBIx::Chart but I could not make it recognize my dates. • Integrating Hudson with MS Test?

  Is it possible to integrate Hudson with MS Test? I am setting up a smaller CI server on my development machine with Hudson right now, just so that I can have some statistics (ie. FxCop and compiler warnings). Of course, it would also be nice if it could just run my unit tests and present their output. Up to now, I have added the following batch task to Hudson, which makes it run the tests properly. "%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\MSTest.exe" /runconfig:LocalTestRun.testrunconfig /testcontainer:Tests\bin\Debug\Tests.dll However, as far as I know, Hudson does not support analysis of MS Test results, yet. Does anyone know whether the TRX files generated by MSTest.exe can be transformed to the JUnit or NUnit result format (because those are supported by Hudson), or whether there is any other way to integrate MS Test unit tests with Hudson?

• JBoss envers and huge audit tables

  All, I am auditing my JEE application with JBoss Evers and the nature of my application causes the audit table to grow very fast. The historic data is queried infrequently and access time is not really an issue, apart from the data from the last week. This data IS queried frequently and access needs to be fast. Ideally, I would split the data and distribute it over two tables, with the older data in compressed format. Unfortunately, Envers does not allow spreading data over multiple tables as far as I can tell from the docs.   I'm working on a program that determines if lines intersect. I'm using matrices to do this. I understand all the math concepts, but I'm new to Python and NumPy. I want to add my slope variables and yint variables to a new matrix. They are all floats. I can't seem to figure out the correct format for entering them. • Custom components vs default components in GUI Design. Which is more practical? (.NET)

  Ok, so is it better to create my own components (Either inherit them from existing ones or creating them from scratch) or to use the ones that come by default? I'm asking this under the umbrella of scalability, overhead and other factors that my contribute on each of the choices. UPDATE: Sorry if I'm to vague. I don't really know how to explain myself better. Isn't it a good idea to inherit each default component? For example what if I'm to design a rather large application and for example i need to change the display format on a DateTimePicker. Wouldn't it better to think ahead and inherit it and use the inherited component instead of the defaults? But, wouldn't it add a lot of overhead in small applications?

Let's say that I have a simple logging function like void syslog(int priority, const char *format, ...); then in syslog() function we can do: if (priority < current_priority) return; so we never actually call the formatting function (sprintf). On the other hand, if we use logging stream like log << LOG_NOTICE << "test " << 123; all the formating is always executed, which may take a lot of time. Is there any possibility to actually use all the goodies of ostream (like custom << operator for classes, type safety, elegant syntax...) in a way that the formating is executed AFTER the logging level is checked ?
