• oracle query with inconsistent results

  Im having a very strange problem, i have a complicated view that returns incorrect data when i query on a particular column. heres an example: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'N' however, if i use the query: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy' and has_garnishment = 'Y'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'Y' The second query should return a subset of the first query, but it returns a different answer. I have dissected the view and determined that this section of the view definition is where the problem arises(Note, I removed all of the select clause except the parts of interests for clarity, in the full query all joined tables are required): SELECT e.fullname empname , NVL2(ded.has_garn, 'Y', 'N') has_garnishment FROM timecard tc , orderdetail od , orderassign oa , employee e , employee3 e3 , customer10 c10 , order_misc om, (SELECT COUNT(*) has_garn, v_ssn FROM deductions WHERE yymmdd_stop = 0 OR (LENGTH(yymmdd_stop) = 7 AND to_date(SUBSTR(yymmdd_stop, 2), 'YYMMDD') sysdate) GROUP BY v_ssn ) ded WHERE oa.lrn(+) = tc.lrn_order AND om.lrn(+) = od.lrn AND od.orderno = oa.orderno AND e.ssn = tc.ssn AND c10.custno = tc.custno AND e.lrn = e3.lrn AND e.ssn = ded.v_ssn(+) One thing of note about the definition of the 'ded' subquery. • Testing performance of queries in mysl

  I am trying to setup a script that would test performance of queries on a development mysql server. Here are more details: I have root access I am the only user accessing the server Mostly interested in InnoDB performance The queries I am optimizing are mostly search queries (SELECT ... LIKE '%xy%') What I want to do is to create reliable testing environment for measuring the speed of a single query, free from dependencies on other variables. Till now I have been using SQL_NO_CACHE, but sometimes the results of such tests also show caching behaviour - taking much longer to execute on the first run and taking less time on subsequent runs. If someone can explain this behaviour in full detail I might stick to using SQL_NO_CACHE; I do believe that it might be due to file system cache and/or caching of indexes used to execute the query, as this post explains. It is not clear to me when Buffer Pool and Key Buffer get invalidated or how they might interfere with testing. So, short of restarting mysql server, how would you recommend to setup an environment that would be reliable in determining if one query performs better then the other?

  I am trying to use the MVVM pattern, and I am wondering where I place an ID value. Do I create a TextBlock that has its visibility property set to collapsed? Or is there a better place to store this kind of data? • Modal dialog focus problems on WPF application

  Hi, I have a problem with my wpf application where a modal dialog will appear behind the main application causing it to hang. It is very inconsistent, where most of the time the pop-up works correctly and is shown in front but occasionally it will pop-up behind, which stops any interaction with it. I can still close the dialog using the taskbar if this happens. I have noticed that it generally occurs when lots of other applications are open and the taskbar is full. Also, I am working with two screens and the problem only occurs on the screen with the taskbar - very wierd! The dialog is a window control, which contains an injected usercontrol as it's data context. To set the owner of the window before calling ShowDialog(), the first active window in the application is used instead of Window.GetWindow(this): private static Window GetOwner() { if (Application.Current != null) { var owner = Application.Current.Windows.Cast().FirstOrDefault(w = w.IsActive); return owner ??   What is the best way to store data that is dynamic in nature using MySQL? Let's say I have a table in which one item is "dynamic". For some entries I need to store one value, but for others it could be one hundred values. For example let's say I have the following simple table: CREATE TABLE manager ( name char(50), worker_1_name(50), worker_2_name(50), ... worker_N_name(50) ); Clearly, this is not an ideal way to set up a database. Because I have to accommodate the largest group that a manager could potentially have, I am wasting a lot of space in the database. What I would prefer is to have a table that I can use as a member of another table (like I would do in C++ through inheritance) that can be used by the "manager" table to handle the variable number of employees. It might look something like this. CREATE TABLE manager ( name char(50), underlings WORKERS ); CREATE TABLE WORKERS ( name char(50), ); I would like to be able to add a variable number of workers to each manager. Is this possible or am I constrained to enumerating all the possible number of employees even though I will use the full complement only rarely?

• Sql Server Backup and move backup file: How to cope with file permissions?

  With our product we have a simple backup tool for the sql server database. This tool should just make a full backup and restore to and from any folder. Of course, the user (usually an administrator) needs permission to write to the target folder. To avoid the problem of not being able to perform a backup to a network drive, I write the backup to a temp file in the Sql Server backup directory. Then I move it to the target folder. This requires permission to delete the temporary file from the sql servers backup folder. Restore is the same in the other direction. This seemed to work fine until someone tested it on vista, where the user does not have write access to the backup folder by default. So there are many solutions to solve this, but none of them seemed to be really nice. One solution would be to find another folder for the temporary file. Both the sql server user as well as the administrator performing the backup need read and write permissions. Is there such a directory? Any other ideas? Thanks a lot.

But I would like to run a full transformation over the entire raw content of the JSON without parsing each object/array/item. • Git as mercurial client? Why no git-hg?

  This is a question that's been bothering me for a while. I've done my homework and checked stackoverflow and found at least these two topics about my question: Git for Mercurial like git-svn and Git interoperability with a Mercurial repository I've done some serious googling to solve this issue, but so far with no luck. I've also read the Git Internals book, and the Mercurial Definitive Behind the Scenes to try to figure this out. I'm still a bit puzzled why I haven't been able to find any suitable git-hg type of a tool. From my perspective hg-svn is one of the main features, why I've chosen to use git over mercurial also at work. It allows me to use a workflow I like, and nobody else needs to bother, if they don't care. I just don't see the point in using the intermediate hg repo to convert back and forth, as suggested in one of the chains. So anyway, from what I've read hg and git seem very similar in conceptual design. There are differences under the hood, but none of those should prevent creating a git client for hg. As it seems to me, remote tracking branches and octopus merges make git even more powerful than hg is. So, the real question, is there any real reason why git-hg does not exist (or at least is very hard to find)? Is there some animosity from git users (and developers) towards their hg counterparts that has caused the lack of the git-hg tool? Do any of you have any plans to develop something like this, and go public with it? I could volunteer (although with very feeble C-skills) to participate to get this done. I just don't possess the full knowledge to start this up myself. Could this be the tool to end all DVCS wars for good?

• Passing data between ViewControllers versus doing local Fetch in each VC

  Hi All, I'm developing an iPhone app using Core Data and I'm looking for some general advice and recommendations on whether its acceptable to pass data between ViewControllers versus doing a local fetch in each ViewController as you navigate to it. Ordinarily I would say it all depends on various factors (e.g. performance etc) but the passing data approach is so prevalent in my app and I'm spooked by all the stories about Apple rejecting apps because of not conforming to their standard guidelines. So let me put another way -- is it non-standard to pass data between VC's? The reason I pass data so much is because each ViewController is just another view on to data present in my object model / graph. Once I have a handle on my first object in the first view controller (which I of course do have to fetch), I can use the existing object composition / relationships to drill down into the next level of detail into data and so I just pass these objects to the next VC. Separately, one possible downside with this passing-data-to-each-VC approach is I don't benefit from (what I perceive to be) the optimisation/benefits that NSFetchedResultsController provides in terms of efficient memory usage and section handling. My app is read-only but I do have one table with 5000 rows and I'm curious if I am missing out on NSFetchedResultsController benefits. Any thoughts on this as well? Can I somehow still benefit from NSFetchedResultsController goodness without having to do a full fetch (as I would have already passed in the data from my previous VC)? Thanks a lot.

• Custom webserver caching

  I'm working with a custom webserver on an embedded system and having some problems correctly setting my HTTP Headers for caching. Our webserver is generating all dynamic content as XML and we're using semi-static XSL files to display it with some dynamic JSON requests thrown in for good measure along with semi-static images. I say "semi-static" because the problems occur when we need to do a firmware update which might change the XSL and image files. Here's what needs to be done: cache the XSL and image files and do not cache the XML and JSON responses. I have full control over the HTTP response and am currently: Using ETags with the XSL and image files, using the modified time and size to generate the ETag Setting Cache-Control: no-cache on the XML and JSON responses As I said, everything works dandy until a firmware update when the XSL and image files are sometimes cached. I've seen it work fine with the latest versions of Firefox and Safari but have had some problems with IE. I know one solution to this problem would be simply rename the XSL and image files after each version (eg. logo-v1.1.png, logo-v1.2.png) and set the Expires header to a date in the future but this would be difficult with the XSL files and I'd like to avoid this. Note: There is a clock on the unit but requires the user to set it and might not be 100% reliable which is what might be causing my caching issues when using ETags. What's the best practice that I should employ? I'd like to avoid as many webserver requests as possible but invalidating old XSL and image files after a software update is the #1 priority.

  Hello, I am learning asp.net but I'm finding some problems. My doubt is how to make a list of titles of news contained in a database. And in this list, each of the titles when clicked is redirected to a page where you will be able to view the news in full (Title, Body, Author ..). What I got: - A database containing a table with the news, every news is associated with an identification code (ex: "ID"). - A page where you will make the listing. (Ex: site / listofnews.aspx) - I have a page that uses the method "querystring" to know what is the primarykey the news. (Ex: site/shownews.aspx?ID=12345, where "12345" is the primarykey of the news. Once it knows what is the primarykey of the news in the database, it loads each of the fields of the page (news.aspx) with the news, this part is working ok. - The data is retrieve using the Linq, so I receive a List of "News", the class "News" as ID, Title, Body, Author.. My doubt is how to make the listing clickable. • Java library class to handle scheduled execution of "callbacks"?

  My program has a component - dubbed the Scheduler - that lets other components register points in time at which they want to be called back. This should work much like the Unix cron service, i. e. you tell the Scheduler "notify me at ten minutes past every full hour". I realize there are no real callbacks in Java. Here's my approach, is there a library which already does this stuff? Feel free to suggest improvements, too. Register call to Scheduler passes: a time specification containing hour, minute, second, year month, dom, dow, where each item may be unspecified, meaning "execute it every hour / minute etc." (just like crontabs) an object containing data that will tell the calling object what to do when it is notified by the Scheduler. The Scheduler does not process this data, just stores it and passes it back upon notification. a reference to the calling object Upon startup, or after a new registration request, the Scheduler starts with a Calendar object of the current system time and checks if there are any entries in the database that match this point in time. If there are, they are executed and the process starts over. If there aren't, the time in the Calendar object is incremented by one second and the entreis are rechecked. This repeats until there is one entry or more that match(es). (Discrete Event Simulation) The Scheduler will then remember that timestamp, sleep and wake every second to check if it is already there. If it happens to wake up and the time has already passed, it starts over, likewise if the time has come and the jobs have been executed. Edit: Thanks for pointing me to Quartz. • bash: listing files in date order, with spaces in filenames

  I am starting with a file containing a list of hundreds of files (full paths) in a random order. I would like to list the details of the ten latest files in that list. This is my naive attempt: ls -las -t `cat list-of-files.txt` | head -10 That works, so long as none of the files have spaces in, but fails if they do as those files are split up at the spaces and treated as separate files. I have tried quoting the files in the original list-of-files file, but the here-document still splits the files up at the spaces in the filenames. The only way I can think of doing this, is to ls each file individually (using xargs perhaps) and create an intermediate file with the file listings and the date in a sortable order as the first field in each line, then sort that intermediate file. However, that feels a bit cumbersome and inefficient (hundreds of ls commands rather than one or two). But that may be the only way to do it? Is there any way to pass "ls" a list of files to process, where those files could contain spaces - it seems like it should be simple, but I'm stumped.

  I have a program where std::list is used. The program uses threads which act on the std::list as producers and consumers. When a message is dealt with by the consumer, it is removed from the list using pop_front(). But, during pop_front, there is a core dump. • How should I format an HTTPService result in Flex so that it is accessible for a pie chart?

  I feel like this should be simple, however everywhere I look online someone does something different. I am doing a small charting application to track download statistics, and want to put the data into a pie chart. I am new to Flex, so if my code is horrible I apologize. <s:HTTPService id="service" url="admin/stats/totalstats.php" fault="service_faultHandler(event)" result="service_resultHandler(event)" /> What is the best resultFormat for this purpose, and if I am assigning the returned value to an ActionScript variable, should it be an ArrayList? ArrayCollection? • CSS ] how to automatically resize the wrapper div.

  Hi, I've been struggling with this problem.. There is a wrapper div and it contains 3 vertical column divs with full of texts, and this wrapper div has red background color so that it can be a background of the entire texts. <div id="content_wrapper"> <div id="cside_a"> // massive texts goes here </div> ... // two more columns go here. </div> And here is the CSS code for them. #content_wrapper { background-color:#DB0A00; background-repeat:no-repeat; min-height:400px; } #cside_a, #cside_b, #cside_c { float: left; width: 33%; } And this code gives me a background that covers only 400px height box.. My expectation was the wrapper div automatically resizes depending on the size of the divs in it. Somehow putting "overflow:hidden" with wrapper CSS code makes everything work fine. I have no idea why "overflow:hidden" works.. shouldn't this hide all the overflowed texts..? Could anyone explain me why? Is is the correct way to do it anyway?

• XCode can't find headers in /usr/include

  Hi all, I'm trying to use standard system header files in my C++ XCode project: #include <openssl/bio.h> #include <openssl/ssl.h> #include <openssl/err.h> The build fails and it complains: "Openssl/bio.h: No such file or directory" I added /usr/include to the "Header Search Paths" in Project settings, but that doesn't fix it. I COULD fix it by adding the whole path like: #include </usr/include/openssl/bio.h> -- but the project is full of similar includes and I don't want to change all of them this way. Also, I feel I shouldn't have to do this. Another way to fix it would be as another thread mentioned, which is to add /usr/include to User Header Search Paths. But if I do that, then I'd have to change all the angle brackets < to quotes "", which again seems like a hack. I mean, these are standard system header files so I feel it should be something simple, not requiring these kinds of hacks. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Hierarchical object model with property inheritance and event bubbling?

  I'm writing a document-based client application and I need a DOM or WPF-like, but non-visual model that: Is a tree composed of elements Can accept an unlimited number of custom properties that get/set any CLR type, including collections. Can inherit their values from their parent Can inherit their default values from an ancestor Can be derived/calculated from other properties, ancestors, or descendants Support event bubbling / tunneling There will be a core set of properties but other plugins may add their own or even create custom documents Supports full inspection by the owning document in order to persist the tree and attributes in an XML format. I realize that's a tall order but I was really hoping there would be something out there to help me get started. Unfortunately WPF DependencyObjects are too closed, proprietary, and coupled to WPF to be of any use as a document model. My needs also have a strong resemblance to the HTML DOM but I haven't been able to find any clean DOM implementations that could be decoupled from HTML or ported to .NET. My current platform is .NET/C# but if anyone knows of anything that might be useful for inspiration or embedding, regardless of the platform, I'd love to know.

• Batch Image compression tool for optimizing thousands of images

  Hi all, I'm maintaining a site that has thousands of images that have not been compressed nearly enough. The homepage weighs in at 1.5 Mb currently, and it could easily be way less that half that. I'm looking for some kind of tool that'll take a folder full of JPG pictures and will recompress them to their "optimal" compression value. Obviously, "optimal lossy compression setting" is an oxymoron, but I'm thinking maybe a tool that'll try different levels and compare the outputs to the input, and choose a "sweet spot" between size and destruction? Or even try whether PNG is a better option, many times it is, for "drawing" type stuff. Does anyone of you know any such tool? I'd have lots of fun coding one, but I bet someone already did and will save me 2 days. Alternatively, of course, anything that'll take all pictures in a folder and recompress them with a fixed quality level (say, 40) will also work, it'll just not make my inner nerd as happy, but it'll solve my problem just fine. (Ideally something that can run on Windows, ideally from the command line) Thank you!

Edit 2 I should have said that I´m testing some method implementations in an abstract class (edited the code to reflect this). Since I can not instantiate the class, how can I test this? I´m thinking in creating an SomeClassSimple extending SomeClassAbstract and testing this one instead. Is it the right approach?
