  I was looking at the amazon website and was wondering how one of the feature would have been implemented. The feature : what customers buy after viewing a particular item. If i were to develop such a feature i would probably generate a session id for each user session and store the session id-page id combination in a log file. and if a book is bought set a separate flag for the session id-page id. A separate program can then be run on the log file periodically, to identify the groups that were bought together/viewed together and that information can be stored in a persistent file. This is ofcourse a simple solution without taking into consideration the distributed nature of the servers - but would this suffice or can you help me identify a better design.

  Hi all, Here is the situation, in order to support our legacy system, we need to insert to a table whenever a user logs in. This is basically an CRUD operation, so it doesn't really make sense to create repository/entity/command/event for this since this doesn't tie to any business rules at all. The only benefit to create a CQRS command is that this database write can happen asynchronously under that model. Which is a better route to take? Use CQRS, and then call a stored proc. when handling that command? Just call database directly in the controller (I am using asp.net mvc)

• Suggestion for R/LaTeX table creation package

  I've been using xtable package for a long time, and looking forward to writting my first package in R... so I reckon that if I have some "cool" idea that's worth carying out, there's a great chance that somebody got there before me... =) I'm interested in functions/packages specialized for LaTeX table creation (through R, of course). I bumped on quantreg package which has latex.table function. Any suggestion for similar function(s)/package(s)? P.S. I'm thinking about building a webapp in which users can define their own presets/templates of tables, choose style, statistics, etc. It's an early thought, though... =)

• CLR Function not working in restored database

  So I've restore a database with CLR assemblies in it from one physical server to another. One of the functions in the CLR assembly essentially does an uncompress of some compressed data. When I run this function against data in the restored database it returns the compressed data (rather than the uncompressed data). No error is thrown in SSMS or in the SQL server error logs. At the suggestion of others, I've checked differences in the database ownership (both owned by sa), trustworthiness (both set to not trustworthy). I also checked differences in the .NET framework installs on both machines but found only that the target machine had a 1.1 version installed that the source didn't. I don't know what else to try. • How can you determine if Control.Visible is set via property or if the value is inherited

  I need to find a way to determine if the Visible property of a control is set via a property change or if is inheriting it value from its parent. Using the Reflector, I find that the functions this.GetVisibleCore() and this.GetState() are both internal methods so I cannot call them. The widgets themselves are created dynamically so I do not want to attach a method to the VisibleChanged event just after the creation of each widget so can try to monitor this property. If I have to, I guess I will but I am looking for something jsut a bit more elegant.

  I intended to create a class which only have static members and static functions. One of the member variable is an array. Would it be possible to initialize it without using constructors? I am having lots of linking errors right now... Class A{ public: static char a[128]; static void do_something(); } How would you initialize a[128]? Why can't I initialize a[128] by directly specifying its value like in C? a[128={1,2,3,...};

• Best practices for extending third party databases?

  I have a situation where our developers extended a Third party database (MS SQL) by adding tables, views, stored procedures, and functions. Recently when the vender issued updates to the database they dropped all of our custom objects. The question now is what are some best practices that will allow us to extend the third party database but keep our objects safe from future updates? My first thought is to create a separate database but then I’m stuck with fully qualifying all the references back to the original database which may cause issues promoting database changes from test to production.

  I'm a newbie with SQL... Now I want to do display some instances of AddrDistances from DevExpress CxGrid with SQL. Select Cast((DistanceAsMeters * 0.001) as Decimal(8,1)) DistanceAsKm, bold_id, created, fromAddress, toAddress From AddrDistance Where DistanceAsMeters = 0 and PseudoDistanceAsCostKm = 0 and not AddrDistance.bold_id in (select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask) Order By Created Desc This SQL is working and the result is: DistanceAsKM Bold_ID Created FromAddress ToAddress 0 134808 16.02.2010 121795 134570 0 121701 10.03.2010 120850 122991 The result I want is this: DistanceAsKM Bold_ID Created FromAddress ToAddress 0 134808 16.02.2010 Kalmar Stockholm 0 121701 10.03.2010 Falkenberg Oslo So the amount of rows is right but I want to replace the numbers in FromAddress and ToAddress with strings from another table. The numbers shows here is just the boldid. Every object in the database have an unique boldid. The addresses above is stored in table Address and it have a City field with the column and a boldid as a key. What should I write in SQL to get this right ? Is there something in the CxGrid that could help here ? Regards

  I know that table sources need a data source to hold the data that the tableview will display. Lets' say that I'm going to make my AppController be the data source of my tableview and that I make the connection in interface builder. My question is since my actual data is going to be stored in an array,let's call it myArray, when I set the data source in code should I do this [tableView setDataSource:myArray]; or this [tableView setDataSource:self]; I'm confused about this. setting the data source with the keyword "self" would set it to the AppController if I'm not mistaken.

  Hello, I am trying to use regular expression to search a document fo a UUID number and replace the end of it with a new number. This where I get stuck. The file test.txt has the below UUID stored in it: self.uid = '5EFF837F-EFC2-4c32-A3D4-D15C7F9E1F22' I want to replace the part D15C7F9E1F22. I have also tried this: r = re.compile(r'(self.uid\s*=\s*)(\S+)') for l in fp: m1 = r.match(l) new=map(int,m1.group(2).split("-") new[4]='RHUI5345JO' But I cannot seem to match the string.   Hi, I'm looking for a way to open encrypted files that are stored on a server. I'm using mcrypt to encrypt the files. I was initially going to create a class that would open the file, decrypt it, write it to a new location, then open that. But I have convinced myself there is a better way (I just don't know what it is). It seems like there should be a way to stream it (?) to the browser once it's decrypted. The initial setup would just link to the file location and the browser would take over (e.g. .pdf files would bring up a dialogue offering to open or save the file). If possible, I'd like it to do the same after decoding. Pointers? Advice? Bueller? Thanks!

There are 30 coders working for this project. Everone adds, deletes, and changes procedures, table columns etc. We need a program to store our database scripts like visual studio's team foundation server. See the change history of script file. Everyone must access that program and be able to put their scripts. Recover previous versions of script file. Execute these scripts over a selected database. Compare databases by procedures (not only by name, by content of procedure), functions, table columns, packages etc. I am searching a program like that. Which one do you suggest me?

The do { ... } while (0) method is widely used in the Linux kernel, but I haven't encountered the other two methods very often if at all. I'm referring specifically to multi-statement "functions", not single statement ones like MAX or MIN. What are the pros and cons of each method, and why would you choose one over the other in various situations?

• Storing dates as UTC in database

  I am storing date/times in the database as UTC and computing them inside my application back to local time based on the specific timezone. Say for example I have the following date/time: 01/01/2010 00:00 Say it is for a country e.g. UK which observes DST (Daylight Savings Time) and at this particular time we are in daylight savings. When I convert this date to UTC and store it in the database it is actually stored as: 31/12/2009 23:00 As the date would be adjusted -1 hours for DST. This works fine when your observing DST. However, what happens when the clock is adjusted back? When I pull that date from the database and convert it to local time that particular datetime would be seen as 31/12/2009 23:00 when in reality it was processed as 01/01/2010 00:00. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this a bit of a flaw when storing times as UTC?

  I have a ASP .NET load balanced application (webservice and website). It runs on SQL server. I need to be able to provide large files for download. However, because of the load balancing situation, the files are stored in the SQL database as opposed to the file system. BITS seems to be the best approach. I have full control of the client. However, i don't know how to configure BITS to read the file from the database. I know how to write the C# code for that, but i don't know how to get BITS to hook into it as opposed to reading the file from the file system. Any ideas?

  I am trying to use the following code to pass information to another site but it keeps giving me an error: Invalid Code: $a = $b->doIt("James",$_SESSION['JNum'],"Frank"); Valid Sample Code: $a = $b->doIt("James","123456","Frank"); In the first example, the page returns "number field is required". The second piece of sample code returns valid results. Do to the nature of this project though I need to pass the id number as they are stored in SESSION variables. What am I missing?

• How would you implement database updates via email?

  I'm building a public website which has its own domain name with pop/smtp mail services. I'm considering giving users the option to update their data via email - something similar to the functionality found in Flickr or Blogger where you email posts to a special email address. The email data is then processed and stored in the underlying database for the website. I'm using ASP.NET and SQL Server and using a shared hosting service.   Obviously it will vary depending on the compiler you use, but I'm curious as to the performance issues when doing vector<vector<largeObject>> vs. vector<vector<largeObject>*>, especially in c++. In specific: let's say that you have the outer vector full, and you want to start inserting elements into first inner vector. How will that be stored in memory if the outer vector is just storing pointers, as apposed to storing the whole inner vector. Will the whole outer vector have to be moved to gain more space, or will the inner vector be moved (assuming that space wasn't pre-allocated), causing problems with the outer vector? Thank you

  I know it is better coding practice to avoid inline javascript like: <img id="the_image" onclick="do_this(true);return false;"/> I am thinking about switching this kind of stuff for bound jquery click events like: $("#the_image").bind("click",function(){ do_this(true); return false; }); Will I lose any performance if I bind a ton of click events? I am not worried about the time it takes to initially bind the events, but the response times between clicking and it happening. I bet if there is a difference, it is negligible, but I will have a ton of functions bound. I'm wondering if browsers treat the onclick attribute the same way as a bound event. Thanks
