• Exchange 2013 Virtual Machine: Backup just mailboxes and clear logs

  I have a Windows Server 2012 machine running Exchange 2013 running as a KVM virtual machine. For my VM guests, I do full image based backups from the host, so that I can quickly restore to any host server simply by copying over the disk image files. This means I don't need a nightly full system backup. That being said, without running a VSS Full Backup, the Exchange logs get massive (Specifically, the performance logs which are 500MB a day). In addition, I would also like to have a nightly backup of just the mail database. What is the best way to accomplish this? A full backup of the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15 folder as I found in one tutorial did not clear out the logs. Thanks, Ben

• How can I increase the size of a Windows 2003 NTFS partition?

  Hi everybody! I have a very important server running Windows Server 2003 and my System partition is becoming too small, it's slowing down the machine. I have already tried all the cleaning stuff and transferring some "unimportant softs" on the "Saves" partition but it didn't help much at all. Is there a way to re-partition my hard-drive that will work on a 2003 Server, that's not too expensive and that could be used without turning the machine off. If there is no other way, then I'll have to reinstall the OS, but it will have to wait for the weekend. Thanks for your suggestions.

• Migrating SBS 2003 to 2012 standard

  My company is currently trying to migrate a Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. We know the general procedure, but we want to make sure we aren't going to mess anything up tremendously. Here's the steps we were planning on taking: 1. Uninstall exchange 2. Remove legacy GPO's 3. Demote the domain controller 4. Promote the new server to the primary domain controller. We have no mail servers to worry about. My question is, will the above method work or will we need to make a complete new domain? Thanks!

• How can I get my License Key from a boot CD?

  We recently acquired a server that's been in use for a while, but no associated software, logins, etc. We attempted to blank the administrator account password, but that didn't work. We also tried some deeper edits on the password, but no avail there either. Now what I'm looking to do is to re-install windows using the existing registry key on the server now. I've read that you can access the product key in the registry, and using the password tool (a linux boot cd) we are able to view the registry. When I tried this, I got the ProductId (Which version of windows), not the registry key. The OS I'm attempting to read from in Windows Server 2003 R2.

• DNS name not on cert

  I've got an interesting one... My users have always typed in 'mail' to get to their mail. There was an internal DNS A record that resolved that to the IP of the mail server. I'm putting in an Exchange server to replace that. In order for people to get their mail, I try putting in an A record that does the same thing as the previous one. When I try to get to OWA, it tells me that the certificate on the server is not trusted. I only have the names: mail.mydomain.com autodiscover.mydomain.com autodiscover.mydomain.internal mydomain.internal mailserver.mydomain.internal so when the browser sees that this cert is trying to cover https://mail/owa it says the cert's not trusted. What amy I supposed to do about that?

Now I have setup a new website at an external server. I cannot put the content on the above server due to some reasons. I need the URL www.subdomain.domain.com/blog fetch content from this external server while the URL should remain the same. How could this be achieved in IIS 7?

• RemoteApp: Logging in as user x disconnects user y

  I'm having a pretty bizarre problem with a Terminal Services server used for RemoteApp. In our network the server works as it should, but at a client's office if two users log in simultaneously, the first one gets disconnected as the other one connects. The users belong to the same group but have individual users. The similar configuration works fine for all other clients. About the server, it's Windows 2008 R2 x64, no AD, SSL encrypted connections. Event viewer shows no useful information. Any hints where to start debugging? Do you need more info about the setup?

  On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, I can know currently open ports on the Windows Firewall using the following command: netsh firewall show state However, on Windows 7 and Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, when I give that command, it says: No ports are currently open on all network interfaces. IMPORTANT: Command executed successfully. However, "netsh firewall" is deprecated; use "netsh advfirewall firewall" instead. Apparently there are ports open because services such as NetBIOS NS, Remote Desktop, and Hyper-V remote administration are functioning. I tried a few 'netsh advfirewall' show commands, but didn't get a way to find out which ports are permit by Windows Firewall. Knowing the currently open ports, I can be sure that I'm permitting necessary and sufficient traffic to pass in, no more, no less. Going through the whole set of advanced firewall rules is so tedious and error-prone. Is there a command on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 to do this efficiently?

• Google products are excessively slow

  Hi, We're running Windows 2000 for our office server. For years now we have had the problem where everthing Google takes an excessively long time to do anything. Gmail hangs, Analytics takes forever, Google docs times out. I have been back and forth with our ISP on this matter and they are convinced it has something to do with our server. This does not happen when I am at home so the problem either lays with our server or with the ISP. • Domain Computers Not Listed In Network

  Our network computers are all connected to a domain, and I can see them if I search the active directory (I can click 'search active directory' and then select 'computers' and then Find Now, and all of the computers will appear). However, the computers are not listed in the network browser on any of our computers (Win XP, Win7, Linux, etc) which are connected to the domain. DC is running Windows Server 2008 (Windows Server Standard) with a configured DNS and DHCP server. All of the IPs on our local network are static IPs, although I can't see how that would make a difference. I can still connect to computers on the network via \\computer_name, but I cannot browse them in 'network' or in 'my network places'. The computer browser service is not started on the DC, but I tried starting that and it had no effect. DC currently has the firewall configured as 'off' to try to debug this problem. • Reconciling vmware memory vs windows memory usage

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit virtual machine on ESXi 4.1 host. The host reports that the virtual machine is actively using less than 1 GB of memory. But, in Windows it's reporting the machine is using 7 GB of memory, even though the total of the processes listed in task manager is less than 1 GB. The machine is rather unresponsive and I'm concerned this is impacting other applications (server's purpose is to run ASP.NET state server process, which has been having trouble and led me to spot the memory question). I just noticed High memory usage Windows Server 2008r2 on VMware and will be looking through those documents more, but what is causing this?

  Hi, I have a web server ( IIS 7.5 , windows 2008 64 Bit web server ed) and notice that in last few days all web sites on server stopped and cant browser by visitor. I check the event log but I didnt see any things related to this problem. When I try to restart IIS i got error on W3SVC serivce.When IIS try to STOP it, W3SVC goes to stopping state and never stop. so I can't start it again. I try and find that I never can restart the W3SVC and when IIS work fine if I try to restart this service, it goes to stopping and never stop. 1- how can I find the problem on IIS? ( i have several asp.net app host on it ) 2- how can I fix W3SVC service stopping problem? Thanks Mehdi

• VPN doesn't have access to drives unless I use the default gateway

  I am trying to setup a VPN connection on one of our office servers so that many of our employees can access our drives when out of town or for important business meetings. However I have a weird glitch in where if the default gateway option is checked they can see the drives and files, but get no internet access. If I have the default gateway option unchecked then they have there internet and can successfully connect to the VPN, but they are not able to see any of the drives or files. The server is running Windows Server 2003 Standard while the employees run either XP or 7 Professional. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. EDIT The VPN setup is PPTP and the main server is behind a SonicWall if that is of any importance.

• Configuring subdomains for a machine (Win2k8) in a lan

  I am currently setting up a windows 2008 server to host a website with multiple subdomains, all accessible only within the lan. also, there is no active directory. what I did is : 1 - computer name : 'web' 2 - in IIS, I added a site binding as 'site1.web' to the default web site 3 - added DNS role to the server 4 - added 'web' as principal zone in direct lookup zones (default options) 5 - added CNAME 'site1' From a client machine, in tcpip config I added the ip address of 'web' to the DNS list in addition to the ISP DNS. (client machine ip is from DHCP) Now browsing to 'http://web' or 'http://site1.web' works correctly. My question is, is it possible throught additional steps in the server to have the websites accessible without requiring the DNS config in all the client machines ? thanks in advance

  I am attempting to setup BugZilla to receive but reports from another system using the XML-RPC interface. BugZilla works fine on its own with its own interface. When I attempt to test the XML-RPC functionality by accessing "xmlrpc.cgi" in my browser I get the error: The XML-RPC Interface feature is not available in this Bugzilla at C:\BugZilla\xmlrpc.cgi line 27 main::BEGIN(...) called at C:\BugZilla\xmlrpc.cgi line 29 eval {...} called at C:\BugZilla\xmlrpc.cgi line 29 Following this I install test-taint package from the default perl repository, this installs version 1.04. Re-running "xmlrpc.cgi" gives me an IIS error: 502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server. There is a problem with the page you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. When the Web server (while acting as a gateway or proxy) contacted the upstream content server, it received an invalid response from the content server. So I run the checksetup.pl which inform me that: Use of uninitialized value in open at C:/Perl/site/lib/Test/Taint.pm line 334, <DATA> line 558. Installing Test-Taint from CPAN is the same. I assume XML-RPC is relent on Test-Taint, but Test-Taint doesn't seem to run correctly. If I ignore this error and attempt to invoke "bz_webservice_demo.pl" to add an entry the script times out. How can I get the XML-RPC / Test-Taint function working ? • How to connect externally to local network from local network?

  I have this weird problem with a Ventrilo server software running in my linux machine. If I connect the server inside my local network, messages keep lagging etc. But users joining the server outside my network do not experience any problems. So the question is, how can I trick the software inside the local network to make me appear as joining from external network. Do I need some proxy running in some external network machine? Does someone offer this kind of service? All the problems started when I changed my router so I guess it has something to do with the new router, but I haven't found a solution by changing settings in my router so I try to fix this in some other way.

  I have an sql server 2008 installed. there are about 6 databases created and running on this server I often get message like "SA account is locked out" is there any specific reasons for this account being locked out? is there any other place I need to check the reasons ( I checked the eventviwer but could not get much information) Edit: i found this information in teh eventviewer backups. Is this the cause? SQL Server failed to communicate with filter daemon launch service (Windows error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. ). Full-Text filter daemon process failed to start. Full-text search functionality will not be available.

• Is defragging right for me?

I read some threads on here about defraging but could not reach a conclusion about whether or not I should use defragging. Can anyone shed some light on whether this will be right for me? • Missing HDD space - says 65GB used, selecting all folders shows 40GB used

  Hi Running Windows Server 2008, 74GB raptor drive and noticed we only had about 500MB left - yikes! So deleted some old backups we don't need, but can't track down where about 25GB seems to be taken up. If I go to C: and select all folders and go to properties, this comes to around 40GB but in My Computer I can see 65GB is used. How can I find out whats eating the space? Just IIS + MSSQL Express + Smartermail on the server EDIT Checked to show hidden folders plus protected operating system files - 41.8GB usage, so 24.6GB is missing somewhere. Theres no system restore even installed on the server

• What is the simplest and fastest way to transfer large file through a Windows network?

  I have a Window Server 2000 machine running MS SQL Server that stores over 20GB of data. The database is backed-up every day to the second harddrive. I want to transfer those backup files to another computer to build another test server and for recovery practicing. (the backup never actually got restored for almost 5 years. Don't tell my boss about that!) I have trouble transfering that huge file through the network. I've tried plain network copy, apache download, and ftp. Any method I tried end up failing when the amount of data transfered reach 2GB. The last time that I successfully transfered the file, it was through a usb attached external harddrive. But I want to perform this task routinely and preferably automatically. Wonder what is the most pragmatic approach for this situation ?

When i try to make this XP Pro PC join the domain on the VM it tries to locate the server and gives me the following error message " The specified network name is no longer available", despite the fact that i can still see this domain on my network. can anyone help with this please. • Missing management console for Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition

  I work for a small (80 employees) non-profit organization. We have a Windows network with a domain. The file server is running Server 2003. A vendor recently installed Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition, ver. 10.1.8.8000. It used to be the case that when I logged in to the file server as administrator, I would see an icon on the desktop that took me to the management console for the antivirus software. I could check logs, statuses of client machines, set policies, etc. That icon is now missing, and I can't find anything relevant under the "Start" menu. There is an entry for Symantec Antivirus, but that only gives me the panel for the client process, not the overall management console for the whole network. I don't want to call the vendor back to fix this (I'm baffled how we lost the icon in the first place). Can someone offer some guidance?

• MSTSC Not working, disconnects shortly after connecting

  I'm currently having a problem connecting remotely to a server. It is a brand new build Windows 2008 R2, remote users are enabled. I'm trying to connect from a Windows 7 machine. Everytime I remotely connect to the server it will stay connected for a matter of seconds (maybe 3-5) and then disconnect and I get the standard old cannot connect and list of reasons it could be. Then I cannot connect again and get this prompt until I restart the server. As soon as it's finished restarting, it happens all over again. The network and hardware configuration between the two machines is completely reliable. Does anybody know what else I could try? Thanks.
