• insertNewObjectForEntityForName: inManagedObjectContext: returning NSNumber bug?

  I'm relatively well versed in CoreData and have been using it for several years with little or no difficulty. All of a sudden I'm now dumbfounded by an error. For the life of me, I can't figure out why insertNewObjectForEntityForName:inManagedObjectContext: is all of a sudden returning some sort of strange instance of NSNumber. GDB says the returned object is of the correct custom subclass of NSManagedObject, but when I go to print a description of the NSManagedObject itself, I get the following error: *** -[NSCFNumber objectID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3f26f50 What's even stranger, is that I'm able to set some relationships and attributes using setValue:forKey: and all is good. But when I try to set once specific relationship, I get this error: *** -[NSCFNumber entity]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3f26f50 Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? I've tried clean all targets, restarting everything, even changing the model to the relationship in question is a to-one instead of a to-many. Nothing makes any difference.

  Hi, We are currently revamping our architecture and design of application. We have just completed design of Data Access Layer which is generic in the sense that it works using XML and reflection to persist data. Any ways now we are in the phase of designing business layer. We have read some books related to Enterprise Architecture and Design so we have found that there are few patterns that can be applied on business layer. Table Pattern and Domain Model are example of such patterns. Also we have found Domain Driven Design as well. Earlier we decided to build Entities against table objects. But we found that there is difference in Entities and Value Objects when it comes to DDD. For those of you who have gone through such design. Please guide me related to pattern, practice and sample. Unfortunately, these are MSMQ based. I am tasked to figure out pub/ sub alternatives that uses a different messaging alternatives ... the only reason for seeking MSMQ alternatives is to overcome the message size restriction. • lighttpd: weird behavior on multiple rewrite rule matches

  I have a 20-rewrite.conf for my php application looking like this: $HTTP["host"] =~ "www.mydomain.com" { url.rewrite-once += ( "^/(img|css)/.*" => "$0", ".*" => "/my_app.php" ) } I want to be able to put the webserver in kind of a "maintenance" mode while I update my application from scm. To do this, my idea was to enable an additional rewrite configuration file before this one. • Localization as an afterthought-- screwed?

  So I signed on with a startup web development company as a subcontractor. They are putting together a large, complex user/product management system for a company that needs to support multiple levels of hierarchial localization. I signed a 3 month contract, and upon looking at their code, wish I hadn't. They opted to write their own MVC framework (I guess the client company didn't want to use a prewritten one) and it's extremely poorly written. There's SQL scattered throughout almost every model view and controller (and there's no parameter-based find methods, it's all SQL) and they haven't even THOUGHT about localization yet-- something that will have an affect on nearly EVERY query. The due date is 4 months away, and I honestly think we'd make good progress by scrapping the whole thing and going with CakePHP. Have any of you been in a similar situation, and what did you do? PS: This is written in PHP/MySQL.

• Get Hardware Information for HWs that is not installed

  I am pretty sure how to retrieve hardware information with WMI classes. but WMIs have a big limitation: They Just can get information for installed hardwares. I need to retrieve information about CPU (model,speed,etc..),Video Card, Sound Card, USB Ports, etc. I found a really good software (HWiNFO) that can do this even the drivers for hardware parts is not installed. It seems that HWiNFO uses a internal database to give a name for each hardware part. So is there any free library/DLL/component that can do this in Windows XP or higher Note: Although HWiNFO SDK seems good, it's not free. So it doesn't exist! ;) I need a free library.

• How should objects be in a Java game.

  EDIT: i just deleted the entire post and reformulated the question to be more generic. I want to do a simple strategy game: map, units. Map: one class. Units: another class, self drawn. Simple questions: How does an unit should redraw itself on the map. A unit should be a JPanel or similar Swing component (just to be able to manage them as an entity with its own mousehandlers) or can be another thing, without neglecting the fact that it should be an autonomous object with its own action handlers and fields. Is this map-units model correct of a simple game that would help me to learn in a fun way Java and OOP fundamentals. Thats it!

• Is the single <form runat="server">-element requirement really necessary for ASP.NET WebForms?

  Looking at some of the changes coming to WebForms in ASP.NET 4.0 I can see many improvements that give developers even more control over the output. Some of these improvement have been a long time coming, and for some time it seemed that it wasn't even possible. It made me wonder if the current model with the single form element that runs on the server is really the only possible way. Why couldn't the ASPNET WebForm architecture work with multiple forms that all run on the server? Imagine if you could architect this change. How would it impact the way we write codebehind today? Would it introduce extra complexity? Would it change the way event handlers work, or validation, or ASP.NET Ajax with the ScriptManager and UpdatePanel controls?

However, new requirement has emerged which says that there is a need in providing an alternative interface for a certain group of website users who want to regularly receive pushed notifications(messages) that would inform them about new events(news) in their field of interest. What sort of interface would it be?Is it all about using a MOM(message-oriented middleware) like JMS and deploying it withing an application server on a website using publish/subscribe model?Is it the correct way how to meet these sort of requirements?And if it's not a web-based interface,would kind of interface would it be then for the users? • haystack's RealTimeSearchIndex causes django to hang on data entry

  I'm using django-haystack and a xapian backend with real time indexing (haystack.indexes.RealTimeSearchIndexing) of model data and it works fine on my Ubuntu server. However, it causes django to hang upon data entry when I deployed the app on a RHEL5 server. Everything is hunky dory if I switch to a standard SearchIndex. Running ./manage.py rebuild_index manually works fine too. The major differences between the two setups would be the versions of Python (2.4.3 vs 2.6.4) and the xapian (1.0.4-1 vs 1.0.15). Any suggestions on what may be the problem? Nothing interesting appears in the logs, and I've tried different databases (mysql, sqlite3) and deployment methods (mod_python, wsgi) with no luck yet. I have noted the warning on the haystack docs stating that RealTimeSearchIndex is only handled gracefully with a Solr backend, however I'm running a very traffic site with only occasional writes so I'm fine with some CPU overheads on writes.

  I'm new to modeling star schemas, fresh from reading the Data Warehouse Toolkit. I have a business process that has clients and non-clients calling into conference calls with some of our employees. My fact table, call it "Audience", will contain a measure of how long an attending person was connected to the call, and the cost per minute of this person's connection to the call. The grain is "individual connection to the conference call". Should I use my conformed Client dimension and create a non-client dimension (for the callers that are not yet clients) this way (omitting dimensions that are not part of this questions): Or would it be OK/better to have a non-conformed Attending dimension related to the conformed Client dimension in this manner: Or is there a better/standard mechanism to model business processes like this one?

• How do I use SimpleRepository without the migration approach?

  I am evaluating SubSonic for use in Phase 2 of a large project. This is an ASP.NET project, with 700 tables in a SQL Server database. We are planning for our domain model to consist of POCO classes to assist with an offline access requirements we have. I believe that the SimpleRepository pattern would be among my best options. Since I have a database already, however, the migration assistance doesn't help me. Are there T4 templates for SimpleRepository that I just overlooked? How do I 'turn off' migration? If I missed something in the Wiki, point me there, otherwise get me started and I'll write up a Wiki entry for y'all when we get there.

• Planning trunk capacity for multiple GbE switches

  Without measuring throughput (it's at the top of the list; this is just theoretical), I want to know the most standard method for trunking VLANs on multiple Gigabit (GbE) switches to a core Layer 3 GbE switch. Say you have three VLANs: VLAN10 (10.0.0.0/24) Servers: your typical Windows DC/file server, Exchange, and an Accounting/SQL server. VLAN20: (10.0.1.0/24) Sales: needs access to everything on VLAN10; doesn't need access to VLAN30 and vice-versa. VLAN20: (10.0.1.0/24) Support: needs access to everything on VLAN10; doesn't need access to VLAN20 and vice-versa. Here's how I think this should work in my head: Switch #1: Ports 2-20 are assigned to VLAN20; all the Sales workstations and printers are connected here. Optional 10GbE combo port #1 is trunked to L3 switch's 10 GbE combo port #1. Switch #2: Ports 2-20 are assigned to VLAN30; all the Support workstations and printers are connected here. Optional 10GbE combo port #1 is trunked to L3 switch's 10 GbE combo port #2. Core L3 switch: Ports 2-10 are assigned to VLAN10; all three servers are connected here. With a standard 10/100 x 24 switch, it'll usually come with one or two 1 GbE uplink ports; carrying over this logic to a 10/100/1000 x 24, the "optional" 10 GbE combo ports that most higher-end switches can get shouldn't really be an option. Keep in mind I haven't tested anything yet, I'm primarily moving in this direction for growth (don't want to buy 10/100 switches and have to replace those within a couple of years) and security (being able to control access between VLANs with L3 routing/packet filtering ACLs). Does this sound right? Do I really need the 10 GbE ports? It seems very non-standard and expensive, but it "feels" right when you think about 40 or 50 workstations trunking up to the L3 switch over 1 GbE standard ports. If say 20 workstations want to download a 10 GB image from the servers concurrently, wouldn't the trunk be the bottleneck? At least if the trunk was 10 GbE, you'd have 10x1GbE nodes being able to reach their theoretical max. What about switch stacking? Some of the D-Links I've been looking at have HDMI interfaces for stacking. As far as I know, stacking two switches creates one logical switch, but is this just for management I/O or does the switches use the (assuming it's HDMI 1.3) 10.2 Gbps for carrying data back and forth?

• Best practice for installing python modules from an arbitrary VCS repository

  I'm newish to the python ecosystem, and have a question about module editing. I use a bunch of third-party modules, distributed on PyPi. Coming from a C and Java background, I love the ease of easy_install <whatever>. This is a new, wonderful world, but the model breaks down when I want to edit the newly installed module for two reasons: The egg files may be stored in a folder or archive somewhere crazy on the file system. Using an egg seems to preclude using the version control system of the originating project, just as using a debian package precludes development from an originating VCS repository. What is the best practice for installing modules from an arbitrary VCS repository? I want to be able to continue to import foomodule in other scripts.

We will have the same branch names and stream names in both GIT and CC, so scripting shouldn't be a problem. The problem here is, Can someone suggest which is the best model to sync CC and GIT Have all the Vobs in CC as single repo in GIT, and have the major stream in CC as various branches in GIT. - Single GIT repo (VOBS) and many branches (CC streams). - This takes up less space as VOBs are kept as single repo with many branches. Have important CC branches as independent GIT repositories and each repository having all the CC VOBs. - Many GIT repo for many CC branch - This will take up lots of space as VOBs will be replicated across. • file_column not creating files, just empty tmp directory

  Up to the end of December 2009 everything worked fine, so i assume that after some upgrades on servers (Ubuntu 8.10 and second Ubuntu 9.10) something stopped working. Model: class Product < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :category file_column :thumbnail, :magick = { :geometry = "150x100" } there is of course table 'products' in database, and it has column 'thumbnail' what's interesting that File actually is uploaded to server, it goes to the /tmp directory under RackMultipartXXXX-0 name, and it is unmodified image. The problem is, that then this file is not moved to 'tmp' dir under RAILS_ROOT/public/product/ nor the 'XX' (where xx means ID of a product) under public/product also. i don't know what to do, i spend few HOURS trying different versions of file_column, also trying to make new, test rails application only from scaffold, but then, in this new application problem was the same

• Relationship Modelling in Core Data

  Hi there, I'm fairly new to Objective C and Core Data and have a problem designing a case where players team up one-on-one and have multiple matches that end up with a specific result. With MySQL, I would have a Player table (player primary key, name) and a match table (player A foreign key, player B foreign key, result). Now how do I do this with Core Data? I can easily tie a player entity to a match entity using a relationship. But how do I model the inverse direction for the second player ref. in the match entity? Player Name: Attribute Match: Relationship Match Match Result: Attribute PlayerA: Relationship to Player (<- Inverse to Player.Match) PlayerB: Relationship to Player (<- Inverse to ????) My model is a School can have many Persons where Persons are inherited out to teachers, students, etc. The following query works for me: IQueryable<DAL.TEACHER> teacher = from p in School select p.PERSON as ESBDAL.TEACHER; How would I write this as a query expression? I thought something like: IQueryable<DAL.TEACHER> teacher = School.Select(x=>x.PERSON) as IQueryable<DAL.TEACHER>; ...but it does not. Am I misunderstanding the .Select()?

  I have two services, one that calls another. Both are marked as singletons as follows: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.Single, ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Multiple)] public class Service : IService And I set these up with a ServiceHost as follows: ServiceHost serviceHost = new ServiceHost(singletonElement); serviceHost.Open(); When the parent service tries to call the child service on the same machine, the parent service hangs, waiting for the child service. I'm already considering moving away from the singleton model, but is there anything wrong with my approach? Is there an explanation for this behavior and a way out of it?

  I'm trying to build a basic shopping cart for a Rails app I'm working on. Nothing special, - the shopping cart has many line_items - each line_item has_one product associated and a quantity with it class Cart < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :line_items has_many :line_items, :dependent => :destroy end class LineItem < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :quantity, :product belongs_to :cart has_one :product end I'm trying to use RSpec to test this association, but i'm doing something wrong as I'm getting an error that says: DEPRECATION WARNING: You're trying to create an attribute 'line_item_id'. Writing arbitrary attributes on a model is deprecated, and I'm not sure why. In my factories.rb file I'm defining the line_item factory as follows: factory :line_item do quantity { Random.rand(1..5) } product end factory :cart do factory :cart_with_two_line_items do ignore do line_item_count 2 end after(:create) do |cart, evaluator| FactoryGirl.create_list(:line_item, evaluator.line_item_count, cart_id: cart) end end end Any pointers where I'm going wrong, it's probably something basic, but I'm still quite new to Rspec. • ASP.NET MVC AuthorizeAttribute passing values to ActionMethod?

  Hi everyone I'm only a newcomer to ASP.NET MVC and am not sure how to achieve a certain task the "right way". Essentially, I store the logged in userId in HttpContext.User.Identity and have written an EnhancedAuthorizeAttribute to perform some custom authorization. In the overriden OnAuthorization method, my domain model hits the database to ensure the current user id can access the passed in routeValue "BatchCode". The prototype is: ReviewGroup GetReviewGroupFromBatchCode(string batchCode); It will return null if the user can't access the ReviewGroup and the OnAuthorization then denies access. Now, I know the decorated action method will only get executed if OnAuthorization passes, but I don't want to hit the database a second time to get the ReviewGroup again. I am thinking of storing the ReviewGroup in HttpContext.Items["reviewGroup"] and accessing this from the controller at the moment. Is this a feasible solution, or am I on the wrong path? Thanks!
