What I need is a dropdown list have a editable box, which act exactly as the combobox in Windows desktop applications. I have a list of value for the user, but I also what them to type if the options there doest fit their demand. • Separation of concerns and authentication

  I'm trying to be a Good Developer and separate my concerns out. I've got an ASP.NET MVC project with all my web code, and a DAL project with all the model code. Sometimes code in the DAL needs to check if the current user is authorized to perform some actions, by checking something like CurrentUser.IsAdmin. For the web site, the current is derived from the Windows username (from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity), but this is clearly a web concern and shouldn't be coupled to the DAL. What's the best pattern to loosely couple the authentication? Should the DAL be asking the MVC code for a username, or the MVC be telling the DAL? Are there advantages or disadvantages to one or the other? Thank you!

• How do I shim a Excel automation addin that implements IDTExtensibility2 but is not a com add in?

  I found this article http://blogs.officezealot.com/whitechapel/archive/2005/05/21/4728.aspx but the example given is a straight automation add-in that does not implement IDTExtensibility2. My add in implements IDTExtensibility2 to get access to the excel object model but is not installed as a COM add in so RegisterFunction for example will called when one of the add in functions is first used not when the excel starts as in the case of the a COM add in. Will this method described in the link above work in my case also? I tried version 2.3.1 of the shim wizard which seems to have support for automations add-ins (it has a check box for automation add ins in the metadata import process). The generated shim runs (I can see breakpoints being hit in the debugger), but my functions no longer work (i get #NAME). The shims is installed as a COM add in and loads when excel starts so I suspect it's not doing what I want.

The output would be OrderNumber - OrderLine - Product Name Order-1 null null // (this order has no lines) Order-2 1 Red widget I tried this query but is not getting the orders with no lines var model = (from po in Orders from line in po.OrderLines select new { OrderNumber = po.Id, OrderLine = line.LineNumber, ProductName = line.Product.ProductDescription, } ) I think that the 2nd from is limiting the query to only those that have OrderLines, but I dont know another way to express it. LINQ is very non-obvious if you ask me!

  Hi I've been trying to figure out how to create a context menu in VSTO 2007. I'm hoping that is possible. When I make this call. Dim commandBar As Microsoft.Office.Core.CommandBar = _word.CommandBars("Text") I get the following error. This object model command is not available in e-mail. I've look all over and from what I can tell it's not possible to add to the context menu in Office 2007. This doesn't seem right. I've also tried this event without any luck since it isn't being fired when right clicking on the MailItem ItemContextMenuDisplay(ByVal commandBar As Microsoft.Office.Core.CommandBar, ByVal selection As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Selection) Hoping that someone can help.   I'm creating my own CompositeControl: a collection of MyLineWebControl and a "add" button. When the user press the "add" button, a new MyLineWebControl is added. In CreateChildControls(), I run through my model (some object MyGridOfLines which has a collection of MyLine) and add one MyLineWebControl for each MyLine. In addButton.Click, I add a new MyLine to my object MyGridOfLines. But, since the Click event method is called after CreateChildControls(), the new MyLineWebControl will be only displayed on the next postback. What can I do to "redraw" immediately my control, without loosing values that I've entered in each input?

• Backing Up Transaction Logs to Tape?

  I'm about to put my database in Full Recovery Model and start taking transaction log backups. I am taking a full nightly backup to another server and later in the evening this file and many others are backed up to tape. My question is this. I will take hourly (or more if necessary) t-log backups and store them on the other server as well. However, if my full backups are passing DBCC and integrity checks, do I need to put my T-Logs on tape? If someone wants point in time recovery to yesterday at 2pm, I would need the previous full backup and the transaction logs. However, other than that case, if I know my full back ups are good, is there value in keeping the previous day's transaction log backups?

  Hi all, I am learning the Model relationship types in cakephp. I have built twotables and in one of the Table A, I got these fields in it: Table A {postID, topic, content} Table B {replyID, content, postID} And when I ran the web page, a bunch of error related to SQL popped up saying that cakephp couldn't find post_id. It is weird that I have already declared the $primaryKey to be using postID in the tableA.php under Models folder, but cakephp seemed want me to change the ID field to post_id instead of postID, because the error disappeared after I have changed the primaryKey to post_id. ANy ideas?

• DVD ROM is not working

  (note: I don't know in which StackExchange site to put this question, I'll thank the moderator that will move it to a more appropriate place, if there is a S.E. available for my question). I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. I burned it on an other computer but when I try to run it in bios, nothing is done and I'm redirected to Grub of my HD.   Now I may not grasp the idea or this could be a mistake so feel free to correct me. I am doing a bubble breaker game in Silverlight. So when a bubble in a column gets bursted. I want to animate the above bubbles to simulate that they are being dropped. Each bubble knows its Row and column location and that gets updated in the View Model. Now my question is, Should I call invalidateArrange() on the Canvas from the ViewModel so it rearranges the bubbles or just have a storyboard animate the TranslateY. In my arrangeOverride Method I have something like this Rect childBounds = new Rect(CalculateLeft(dataContext.Column), CalculateTop(dataContext.Row), BubbleSize, BubbleSize); child.Arrange(childBounds); If there is a better way let me know. I am trying to learn the best practices.

We have protocols like Modbus and Hart to handle the request and response between the application and devices. The question is related to managing the reference count of the channel.   I am interested in applying dependency injection to my current project, which makes use of the MVC pattern. My controllers will call the models and therefore will need to inject the dependencies into the models. To do this, the controller must have the dependencies (such as a database object) in the first place. The controller doesn't need to make use of some of these dependencies (such as the database object), so I feel that it shouldn't be given this dependency. However, it has to have these dependencies if it is to inject them into the model objects. How can I avoid having dependencies injected into an object just so that it can pass them on? Doing so feels wrong and can result in many dependencies being injected into an object. Edit: I am using PHP.

• Optimizing Smart Client Performance

  I have a smart client (WPF) that makes calls to the server va services (WCF). The screen I am working on holds a list of objects that it loads when the constructor is called. I am able to add, edit and delete records in the list. Typically what I am doing is after every add or delete I am reloading the entire model from the service again, there are a number off reasons for this including the fact that the data may have changed on the server between calls. This approach has proved to be a big hit on perfomance because I am loading everything sending the list up and down the wire on Add and Edit. What other options are open to me, should I only be send the required information to the server and how would I go about not reloading all the data again ever time an add or delete is performed?

It has 360 degree rotation and can zoom in and out. As user selects a parameter, specific value of that parameter at various depth of pipe in surface should display. • Create iPhone app programmatically, in its entirety

  I recently became interested in iPhone app development, so I've been looking at online tutorials, and also reading a book, trying out the examples as I go along. I'm getting better, but one of the things I still find quite annoying about the usual development model is that I really have no idea what the SDK is really doing behind the scenes to make the app "work" because Apple protects me from this. For example, when I make connections on interface builder, this presumably corresponds to code being generated somewhere... Where that code is and what it does and how it works are not obvious (to me). So I'm wondering, is it possible to create an iPhone app entirely programmatically? That is, have execution start in some main method, which will then programmatically create any views, register event listeners, etc. And if yes, what are some good resources for something like this?

  I have 3 tables(Roles,Actions and RoleActionLinks). Roles table has few columns(RoleID,RoleName,Desc). Actions table has few colums(ActionID,ActionName,Desc). In RoleActionLink is created for store the association between Roles and Actions and this table has the columns such as RoleID,ActionID When I created the data model(edmx). it shows only Role and Action as entity. i did not find RoleActionLink table. but even there is no direct relation between Roles and Actions table, both tables are automatically related using RoleActionLink table. When i create the new Action, a action record should be populated in Action table(this is works fine). At the same time, i need to populate record in RoleActionLinks table. But i dont have the entity to populate. Please tell me how to accomplish my needs.
