• Powershell 2.0 Hang When Run From MsDeploy pre- post- ops using c/

  I am trying to invoke powershell during the preSync call in a MSDeploy command, but powershell does not exit the process after it has been called. The command (from command line): "tools/MSDeploy/msdeploy.exe" -verb:sync -preSync:runCommand="powershell.exe -NoLogo -NoProfile -NonInteractive -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command C:/MyInstallPath/deploy.ps1 Set-WebAppOffline Uninstall-Service ",waitInterval=60000 -usechecksum -source:dirPath="build/for-deployment" -dest:wmsvc=BLUEPRINT-X86,username=deployer,password=deployer,dirPath=C:/MyInstallPath I used a hack here (http://therightstuff.de/2010/02/06/How-We-Practice-Continuous-Integration-And-Deployment-With-MSDeploy.aspx) that gets the powershell process and kills it but that didn't work. I also tried taskkill and the sysinternals equivalent, but nothing will kill the process so that MSDeploy errors out. The command is executed, but then just sits there. Any ideas what might be causing powershell to hang like this? I have found a few other similar issues around the web but no answers.

• Setting the background color of WPF TabControl inactive tabs

  Is there a simple way to set the background brush of all inactive tabs in a WPF TabControl? I want to emulate the look of VS 2010 on a TabControl--the background color of the control's inactive tabs should match the background color of the window in which the TabControl is sited, so that you see only the text of the tab, and not the tab itself. I know it will take a ControlTemplate to do it; I am trying to figure out what to put in the control template. Put another way, How do I specify that a particular brush should be applied to all inactive tabs? Thanks for your help.

  I'm developing a .NET wrapper for WinPcap called Pcap.Net. I'm trying to make sure this wrapper has high performance and I want to compare it to WinPcap and to other .net wrappers for WinPcap. The features I want to profile are: WinPcap native features (sending packets in different ways, receiving packets in different ways...) Interpreting packets that Pcap.Net knows how to interpret (like Etherent, IPv4, UDP, TCP, ICMP, ...) Building packet that Pcap.Net knows how to build (the same types it knows how to interpret). I also want to be able to profile the benchmark using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate profiling tools. My question is: What should my benchmark exactly do to cover these issues and how would you suggest to build it?

  Hi I have a table (in MS SQL 2005) with a selection of dates. I want to be able to apply a WHERE statement to return a group of them and then return which date is the earliest from one column and which one is the latest from another column. Here is an example table: ID StartDate EndDate Person 1 01/03/2010 03/03/2010 Paul 2 12/05/2010 22/05/2010 Steve 3 04/03/2101 08/03/2010 Paul So I want to return all the records where Person = 'Paul'. • How do I get Nant to use the 4.0 compiler to target .Net 3.5

  Yes I know that sounds a little bit crazy, but I've got .Net 3.5 deployed in the field and I'd like to use the new 4.0 compiler to target it. There are several new syntactic sugar features in the latest versions of Vb.Net and C# which I would like to use,but I am unable (just yet) to enforce a new version of the .Net framework and CLR on my client base. Before the nay sayers jump in with both feet... I have just successfully used Studio 2010 to compile a 3.5 targeted app which used VB.Net auto properties (A new feature in VB.Net 10) so I know the compilers are capable somehow. So back to my question.... How do I convince Nant to use the 4.0 compiler, but to target .Net 3.5 (CLR 2.0) Update: I am using the csc and vbc tasks and not the Solution task. although I'd settle for an answer on how to do this direct with the compilers at this point.

  Suppose I have a line of code that starts like the following: Func1(Func2(Func3 Is it possible to set up Visual Studio (2005, 2008, 2010) IDE, so that when I hit ';' it will auto-complete all the brackets. I am only interested in brackets, nothing fancier. It doesn't have to be ';' key, it can be another key that auto-completes both brackets and ';'. This is a tiny thing that pops-up time and time again, and I've always wondered if I had to live with it. Thanks.

• Visual Studio does not flag unterminated string constant in VB.Net

  I noticed that if I leave off the terminating double quote for a string constant in Visual Studio 2010, there is no error or even a warning, i.e. Dim foo as String = "hi However, the continuous integration tool we are using flags an error: error BC30648: String constants must end with a double quote. What's going on here? Is there some language rule in VB.NET that makes a terminating double quote optional "sometimes"? Is there some setting in Visual Studio that will make it flag this as an error?

Into my directory: C:\TFS-BUILDS\Example Build\Example Build_20100414.44\_PublishedWebsites I get the following two directories: WebsiteName WebsiteName_Package All I want to do is run the following command on a successful build - to deploy the site: WebsiteName_Package\WebsiteName.deploy /Y How can I customize the build process template to actually run that package? Under TFS 2010 you have to use the process templates (no more TFSBuild.csproj stuff). I've tried duplicating the DefaultProcessTemplate.xaml file, but it basically kills my Visual Studio when I open it. How can I edit the .xaml by hand to run this simple command on a successful build

• Unicode characters in URLs

  In 2010, would you serve URLs containing UTF-8 characters in a large web portal? Unicode characters are forbidden as per the RFC on URLs (see here). They would have to be percent encoded to be standards compliant. My main point, though, is serving the unencoded characters for the sole purpose of having nice-looking URLs, so percent encoding is out. All major browsers seem to be parsing those URLs okay no matter what the RFC says. My general impression, though, is that it gets very shaky when leaving the domain of web browsers: URLs getting copy+pasted into text files, E-Mails, even Web sites with a different encoding HTTP Client libraries Exotic browsers, RSS readers Is my impression correct that trouble is to be expected here, and thus it's not a practical solution (yet) if you're serving a non-technical audience and it's important that all your links work properly even if quoted and passed on? Is there some magic way of serving nice-looking URLs in HTML http://www.example.com/düsseldorf?neighbourhood=Lörick that can be copy+pasted with the special characters intact, but work correctly when re-used in older clients?

• Do I really need cmake for build automation?

  I'm currently investigating cmake to allow automatic building on the Win32 platform. For all runtimes and libraries I'd like to build, Visual Studio (2008/2010) projects do allready exist. I've come across cmake, but I'm unsure if I really need it. As the documentation says, cmake generates VS projects and they then can be built e.g. using MSBuild. As the projects itself allready do exist (and build nicely via the IDE or MSBuild on the cmd line), what do I need and use cmake for? Just for directory/project folder traversal?   I am customizing the ajax html editor. I am creating a class which derives from ajax html editor, and overriding FillTopToolbar() method to have limited toolbar buttons. I am trying to use this in my aspx page. <%@ Register namespace="Content" tagprefix="edit" %> <edit:MyEditor runat="server" Width="100%" Height="250px"/> I am able to see the editor in my aspx page. • Query and/or Search for SharePoint Document ID

  We have the sharepoint 2010 environment with Document ID's enabled. Given (part of) a Doc ID, we want to programmatically retrieve the document(s) matching that ID. The problem seems to be that this column is rather special, in that it might need special handling. Using an SPSiteDataQuery, fetching the _dlc_DocId field as part of the viewfields works fine. However, including it as part of the where query never results in any documents being fetched. Using the Search API has gotten us nowhere at all. Has anyone pulled this off, or any suggestions on how to tackle this problem? [Update] Looks like DocumentIdProvider.GetDocumentUrlsById might be used for this purpose. If necessary, the matching SPListItem can then be found by querying on the URL. However, the MSDN documentation doesn't document the documentId arugment properly, so I'm unsure whether partial ID's are allowed and in what format.

  Using VS 2010, with ASP.NET, and .NET 3.0, and C#... When I use a System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource and call its Insert() method to insert a new row, and that table has an identity column, I'd like my method to return the value of that column. For example, in my SQL 2005 table, I've got: Customer.Id Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Where Customer.Id is an identity colum. When I call my method InsertNewCustomerRecord( "John", "Smith" ), I'd like to be able to return the Customer.Id that gets automatically generated in the database.   i have this enormous array that i am pulling from an API for BattleField Bad Company 2, and the soldier stats can be pulled as a multi dimensional array with an inner array for each soldier, however the API sormats it sorting the soldiers by name alphabetically, i want to sort them by rank (which is just another key within that soldiers array). ive been trying to figure this out for days, anyone have any ideas?
