• Bad style programming, am I pretending too much?

  I realized to work in an office with a quite bad code base. The base library implemented in years and years is quite limited, and most of that code is, honestly, horrible. Projects developed in the office are very large. Fine. I could define me a "perfectionist" (but often I'm not), and I thought to refactor an application (really a portion), which need a new (complex) feature. But, today, I really realized that it's not possible to refactor that application modules with a reasonable time (say, 24/26 hours, respect the avaialable time for the task, which is 160 hours). I'm talking about (I am a bit ashamed to say) name collisions, large and frequent cut & paste code, horrible and misleading naming, makefiles without dependencies (!), application login is spread randomly across many different sources, dead code, variable aliasing, no assertion, no documentation, very long source files, bad/incomplete include file definition, (this is emblematic!) very frequent extern declaration of variables and functions, ... I'm sure to continue ... buffer overflows because sprintf, indentation (!), spacing, non existent const modifier usage. I would say that every source line was written quite randomly when needed, without keeping in mind some design (at least, the obvious one). (Am I in hell?) The problem arises when the application is developed by a colleague of mine. I felt very frustrated. So, I decided to expose the "situation" to my colleague; at the end, that was a bad idea. He is justified in saying that "the application was developed in haste, so it is natural that it is written vaguely; you are wasting time to think and implement an elegant implementation" .... I'm asking too much from my colleague to write readable code, which is managed and documented? I expect too much in not having to read thousands of lines of code to understand how a particular logic?

• My search what the Cloud will mean for my Work

  Since I finished my MCM Exchange 2007 training back in April 2009 I’m struggling with the Cloud. I know it will change the way we do things today, but how will it affect my work. My work is Exchange consultancy mostly in the Netherlands, but more and more across the globe.   In my job as a consultant I noticed last year that a large percentage of my customers showed interest in the cloud services available today. But in most situations it seemed that it wasn’t the right time for them to switch to a cloud service at this moment. Right now I’m helping one of my customers is exploring Exchange online and it looks like they will switch over from their on-premise Exchange solution. This made me more than ever realize that I need to do something to not miss the boat.     With Office 365 coming this year, my idea is that Cloud services will take off from now. Also I’m sure that quite some customers will expect me to help them with their decision between the cloud and the on premise solution. So in the next months I will explore all the possibilities of Office 365, but also some of the competition in this field.   In my search for what the cloud will mean for me and my customers, I will go over all the aspects of the offered solutions. Any help in my search is always welcome. I’m looking forward to ideas people have around the cloud and how it will change the IT environment, especially in the Unified communications field.   Next week I will post my first article about my experiences with the cloud until now.

• Squid 3 and Internet Explorer 11 with authentication

  Need some help. My college has up until now been running Squid 3 on Ubuntu 12.02 and now 14.04 successfully. That was till recently. Our WSUS server is dishing out updates to all our workstations of which Internet Explorer 11 is one of them. Now all of a sudden users do not need to authenticate via the squid proxy to be able to use the internet. This makes it rather difficult as I also use SARG to generate usage logs for all users each day. All our workstations also have Chrome on them, and Chrome authenticates fine via the Squid proxy. Doing a couple of Googles, I ran into and article, where someone made mention that Microsoft has deprecated digest and basic authentication from IE 11. Reason was given that Office 2013 was giving problems as it was not giving the popup screen for authentication when Office tries to download templates from the internet. I have run into this problem, but by setting those sites to not authenticate via squid fixed the problem. Has anyone else run into something similiar? Would changing to NTLM or Kereberos be a solution?

• Slow to sync music files?

  I have created a folder in the Ubuntu One sync folder and called it music. I have added various albums and the folder has started to sync. However the files were added back in October and still only the folders have synced and no music files. I tested this service before and added a single music file directly into the Ubuntu One folder (no sub folders) and within a few days it synced, however it seems anything in sub folders seem to stall or take a very long time. My ubuntu One program always says syncing and the progression bar creeps, but still no files synced. I know there are issues with speed but a month and going to sync? I recently tested the same files with Dropbox and it took 9 hours. I have port forwarded the https (443) port both in the software firewall and in my router, I tried disabling both firewalls too, either way it makes no difference. I have also tried both from home and the office on different Ubuntu systems. Is there anything anyone has done to improve this service? I am trying to integrate Ubuntu One service into the office to share project files but the syncing is taking to long. I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.10 (fully updated, fresh install), I love Ubuntu and wish to continue to support it anyway I can, so a solution would be good :-) Any help would be appreciated. • Replicate GAE Datastore On A Server LAN in Java

  There may be instances wherein one Company Client may not have internet connection on their vicinity. Either their Internet Service Provider currently experience a down time or there are some other problems involving the network, but not their LAN. GAE seems to be needing a connection at all times in the internet. I only need GAE Datastore. I'm thinking about a different application. Creating a Java Swing Client, for instance, and connecting to the Office Server via HRD of GAE Datastore. When I tried to check on the solutions for Java, it does not say anything about uploading all data and I do not need the App. I just need the GAE Datastore. In Java GAE, only indexes can be able to be manipulated. So, is there any tricks/ideas that you can use HRD with GAE Datastore on Java with an Internal Office Server combined? This way, it may provide service even during network down times. (Can somebody create me a tag of gae-datastore, please.)

I was searching a site which can tell the income source details for European developer (specially for Belgium). But mostly not a single website exist who tells the true. My situation: As a programmer myself in one company i use all my knowledge, 20++ hours a day (office , home, office, home) because every-time its challenge/complex/stress/over-time feature-requests, at the end of the year in Europe i was getting in total not even the lowest amount shown here (UK pound vs Euro + high-tech most of the time they use + speed in development): http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/ In one company i have to use my best performance knowledge for whole year with: C, Java, PHP (Zend Framework, Cakephp), BASH, MySQL/DB2, Linux/Unix, Javascript, Dojo, JQuery, Css, Html, Xml. • Ubuntu 12.10 ATI Driver 12.11 fails after compiz and xorg update

  I updated my system via the package manager from Unity and next restart was just blackness. After being here: http://linux.hootip.com/amd-catalyst-12-11-beta-fix-and-installation-the-drivers-on-ubuntu-12-11/ I had the Catalyst 12.11 Beta driver installed. I checked my /var/log/apt/history.log and the update I received was of compiz and xorg packages. I tried to get latest release info, but all I get from their pages are commit info; I can't tell what was n the package update I got served. Anyone knows what was in the latest xorg/compiz release that broke the driver? Which driver should I use now? For completeness this is how I got the system back to boot (probably lame and not elegant): Boot with GRUB selection "More Ubuntu options (or sth like that), From secondary screen select 3.5.0-19 with boot options, When system prompts on stuff you'd like to do, select "root" - Drop to root shell, There: # mount -o remount,rw / # mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failed # /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # reboot This got be back on my feet.

• Internal Mic not working on Dell Adamo 13

  So I'm using Elementary Luna Beta (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) on a spare HDD after successfully using Jupiter release (based on 10.10) for many years. In Jupiter I had my internal mic work out of the box and with Skype installed from deb it was all setup without having to step foot inside the terminal. In Luna Beta the internal mic is not recognised by the OS and so also not recognised by Skype. I believe the hardware is this (from sudo lshw): *-multimedia description: Audio device product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 03 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 resources: irq:46 memory:f8600000-f8603fff As well as this I ran cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec which gave me: Codec: IDT 92HD73C1X5 Codec: Intel Cantiga HDMI How do I tweak Luna to get this hardware working properly? I'm able to switch out my Luna HDD with the Jupiter HDD to help troubleshoot what the differences are between the two and why the more recent OS can't find / use the mic correctly.   I've implemented Negamax as it can be found on wikipedia, which includes alpha/beta pruning. However, it seems to favor a losing move, which should be an invalid result. • Server 2008R2 in Extra Small Windows Azure Instance?

  Windows Azure hosting for an Extra Small (XS) Windows VM seems to come out to be about $10 a month right now. I think this XS instance gives you the equivalent of a 1 GHZ CPU with 768MB of RAM. I think the minimum requirements for Server 2008 is 1GHZ CPU with 512MB of RAM. Also, I think the minimum requirements for SQL Server Express is 1GHZ CPU with 256 MB of RAM and that the minimum requirements for Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta is 2.2 GHZ CPU with 1 Gig of RAM (this 2.2 GHZ part could be a problem for my 1 GHZ XS VM...). Given the performance of the XS Azure instance, would I be able to install: a very basic MVC web site; a free instance of SQL Server Express; a free single user instance of Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta and run the XS VM instance without serious crashing? I know there are other Shared WebHost providers that can provide these features for me, but those hosting providers have the following disadvantages: They sometimes cost a lot of money after all of the "addons" are in place They probably don't provide the level of security and employee integrity that Microsoft can provide They don't provide the total control that an Azure VM seems to provide

  A new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is now available, so what will that mean for requirements gathering? BPM project requirements can be documented using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0). For ACM, there is a new notation in the works. It is called Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN). For now, this notation isn’t included as a modeling tool in the new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with ACM, but it is possible that a modeling tool could be included in a future release. What is CMMN? CMMN is a standard intended to capture the common elements that Case Management Products use, the same way that BPMN is a standard for BPM products (such as Oracle BPM). CMMN is created by the Object Management Group (OMG) and is still in the beta version. In April 2014, OMG released the second beta version the CMMN 1.0, and the most recent version is available here. CMMN captures some of the elements that are commonly used when talking about ACM such as Cases, Milestones, and Tasks. It also introduces some elements that you may not automatically hear when talking about ACM such as Stages, Events, and Decorators. • Rant - Why is Windows Azure not available in Africa?

  Yesterday at the .NET user group meeting in Kampala Uganda  I gave a talk on cloud computing with Windows Azure  (details will be in my next blog post). The guys where excited. Without owning they own inftrastucture and at low cost they can build scalable , highly available applications. Not quite. Azure accounts are only available to people in particular countries - none from Africa. I attended PDC in 2008 when Microsoft unleashed Windows Azure. One of the case studies to show the benefits ofr cloud computing was a project in Africa for an education service in Ethiopia. The point they where making was that the cloud was perfect for scenarios where computing infrastructure is not sophiscated, like Ethiopia. Perfect , i thought. So i got my beta account from PDC and started playing around in the cloud. Then Azure goes live , my beta account does not work any more and I cant pay because am from Uganda. Microsoft , this sucks. I dont know the reasons for Microsoft doing this, but am sure we can work out something. We in Africa need the cloud more than anybody else in the world. Setting up data centers that are higly scalable and available for our startups is not an option we have. But we also cant pay for cloud computing with Microsoft. Microsoft, we know we are a tiny insigficant market for a company your size, but your excluding us only continues to widen the digital divide. Microsoft , how about you have a reseller model for cloud computing. Instead of trying to deal direclty with each client you have local partners who help you sell and bill your cloud services. I think that would lead to Windows Azure being available in Africa. I can help you resell in Uganda.
