  • Microsoft Remote Desktop Bandwidth Usage

    I am wondering how much bandwidth in terms of bytes sent/received is consumed by a typical remote desktop session. I need to know this because our ISP enforces a cap on monthly bandwidth usage (i.e. the total amount data in GB that can sent or received in a month). So just wondering like how much KBs or MBs are transferred per hour in an average RDP session.

  • windows 7 issues with local domain name

    Until recently my operating system was XP where for the purpose of development and testing of php and zen cart I set up xampp that included apache http server and mercury mail server I also made changes to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts as follows: 127.0.0.1 www.zen.com # For browser access 127.0.0.1 mail.mercury.com # For email access 127.0.0.1 mercury.com # For mercury mail server This allowed the use of www.zen.com in the address bar of my browser rather than 'localhost' and mail.mercury.com to access email via thunderbird. All was well. Then I installed windows7, I made all the mods and again everything appeared to run as expected.Then I turned off my wireless modem causing all working local connections to fail. Localhost in the address bar still works but not www.zen.com and thunderbird 'cannot find mail.mercury.com' Is there some way to overcome what ever is causing this.

  • DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

    I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD.   • How to build a NAS?

    Hi all, I have quite a bit of photos I'd like to organize and get away from sparse DVDs and move to a NAS solution. Ideally, this would let me have some level of redundancy and more easily find what I'm looking for. That being said, hard drives are relatively cheap. My next question is, I would like to run ZFS on the drives with the ability to add / remove drives for additional redundancy, or change the configuration of the drives possibly. Is there a NAS box that let's you run your OS of choice (FreeNAS) so all I'd need to do is get the hard drives, the NAS box, and modify the firmware / OS with FreeNAS? Walter

  • is there a way to group desktop icons on the task bar

    i have a folder on the desktop which has a bunch of programs i use frequently, i can't pin all these programs to the taskbar themselves as there are too many for the screen width that it'll just make the taskbar scrollable i am wondering if i can do one of the following pin the icons to the taskbar under 1 icon pin the folder to the taskbar separately to the Windows Explorer button which when there are no folders open will open up the libraries and if there are folders it'll show me the folders open, this way if i have 5 folders open and my frequently used programs folder i can just click on the frequently used programs folder icon on the taskbar and be given that folder only i'm trying to reduce the number of clicks, scrolling or scanning across the task bar i need to do in order to find a program

  • Mutli-processor workstation as a workstation/server

    I work in a research institute and a number of programs we use are computationally intensive (I actually wrote one of them). Right now we have one computer that is dedicated for one of these programs (with local accounts only, as in users physically sitting in front of that pc) and the other programs are run on individual workstations assigned to people. I have been looking around to common brands such as Dell and HP, for a some sort of a small/medium scale server, which can be used as a workhorse by sending tasks remotely. It appears as if there is nothing in between workstations with one 6-core processor and a bunch of extras (like fancy graphics etc) and rack mount servers with ridiculous amount of RAM and HDD expansion capabilities but still relatively little number of processors/cores. I wonder if what I am looking for is such a small niche product? Are there other solutions that I might not be aware of? Does anyone know of a multi proc- multi-core workstation/server that is still within the reasonable

  • Want to install OS from USB instead of CD : How to deal with *.img image files?

I'm trying DragonflyBSD operating system. as you can see here: http://www.dragonflybsd.org/download/ there are two kinds of images CD (.iso) and USB (.img) files available for download. I downloaded *.iso and using UNetbootin to make a bootable USB stick. But its taking hell lot of time. Its been 2 hours and its just 50% done(9k of 18k files). I'm really pissed off now! I used *.iso because I didn't know how to deal with *.img files. Will it be quick *.img file? How to use it to make bootable USB?

    Hi, I have 2 laptops - one running Windows XP and other running Vista. Both have wifi card.I have one Reliance broadband data card. I want to be able to access internet on both the machines simultaneously using this one data card. Please help. I think, there would be many many ways to do it. I do have some linksys router but any simple quick way without any extra hardware? like we could set up p2p or WLAN between these 2 machines, because both have wifi card so we shouldn't compulsorily need any extra hardware(?)   • Skydrive for desktop not showing icon in notification area

    is this normal behavior? I'm concerned that some files will not be transferred. For example. I need to be sure that its safe to put my laptop to sleep so that later when I'm on my desktop I wont have to open up my laptop and sync again if I closed it too early. It doesn't even appear when I THINK it is syncing. Thanks for any help in advance. edit 1: Yeah I know the app isn't required or even offered anymore, but what I was wondering was if they had some way to tell if it's syncing or not. The old desktop app had an icon in the notification area which had a animation for when it was syncing, but now there isn't anything there. Although when I try to go in and make it appear it says the application isn't active and the icon will show the next time it is. Its version is 17.0.2015.0811 Is it possible to force the icon to show in the notification area if it isn't designed to show up there at all? I basically just want the same functionality of Skydrive on windows 8.

    Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 I have issues with getting USB device resets on my Maxtor OneTouch USB harddrive: Nov 9 20:54:37 localhost kernel: [32459.100021] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 21:54:37 localhost kernel: [36059.100017] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 23:24:37 localhost kernel: [41459.112025] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 The device itself continues to work fine, the resets however wake the device out of its sleep state and thus cause it to spin up, which is very annoying. Interestingly, as the log shows, the resets happen at pretty regular intervals (i.e. one hour or half an hour), not randomly. An USB card reader seems to have the same issues, while another USB harddrive from a different manufactor works fine on the same PC. What could be causing this and how could I fix it?

  • Firefox does not upgrade properly (infinite installation loop without success)

    I've been using Firefox for a long time but I have a problem with upgrading process now. As you know, Firefox automatically checks for the latest version and downloads it, and when it is ready to be installed it starts the installation process as usual. Last month, when I clicked on "OK, install v3.6.2", the process started but couldn't be finished properly. FF gave a message like that: "Installation cannot be completed, please restart Firefox to retry". When I restarted FF, the same thing happened, and the process entered in an infinite loop. I restarted my PC and clicked on FF icon, and again the installation process began and went into the infinite loop. My solution to this problem was to download FF 3.6.2 and manually install it after killing firefox.exe. Today, FF proposed me to install v3.6.3 and again the same problem occured. I manually downloaded FF 3.6.3 and installed it successfully. Anyone experiencing this problem? In case you want to know, I did not install any new addons in the last few months, and my FF operates without problems. I'm using Windows 7 Home Pro x64.

    I'd like to create a Templates folder in my profile on Windows 7, but there's already a junction to AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates. I assume this is a system configuration so I don't want to delete it. I'm currently calling my folder File Templates, but that seems to verbose to me. Is there anything I can do?

  • Error burning DVD using Devede on Ubuntu 9.04

    I'm trying to burn a DVD in DeVeDe under ubuntu -- on my computer it's already in DVD format (a VIDEO_TS folder) but when I try and drag it into DeVeDe it says "Some files weren't video files. None added." From looking at it, all the files look like they belong there, just from doing this a few times already and seeing all the files contained in a DVD. The file extensions in the folder are: VOB BUP IFO and the files are all named like VTS_02_1.VOB. I have tried excluding the IFO files when dragging them into DeVeDe but get the same error. Is the problem in the types of files in the DVD data or is the DVD corrupt?
