  • Embed remote desktop in browser

    I would like to embed a Remote Desktop session within my browser. I must use remote desktop because my clients can't install any additional software on the server. Here are some problems that I can already foresee: 1) I believe that I can embed an RDP ActiveX control, but then all I could support is IE. And even then, IE lockdown may forbid ActiveX controls. 2) I don't know anything about Apple computers, but I presume that they don't inherently run RDP? 3) I think there are ways to run RDP through a Java control. I don't have experience to know if this is a good or bad idea. I suppose that Java may even be disabled on some browsers, but don't know if this is a common case? So, what options have I got here to make this work reliably? I presume that I may need some default options (ie ActiveX), and then some fallback options (ie Java), and code to identify the correct option each time.

    I am creating a desktop application using AIR. In that application user is allowed to download some resources which have life span of 2 days. I am storing the date when the user is downloaded. But how can i check whether the date is passed 2 days or not? Right now I am checking with the current system date.But when the user changes the system date to back, it will start to work which i dont want. How the desktop applications say like flex builder and all having trial period.? How are they tracking the dates remaining? ~Umesh

    I have a desktop gadget that pulls RSS Feeds from a website. The Feed contains information about issues - ie. Priority, Time, Description. The Feed items are displayed on the desktop - however I need to colour code them according to their priority ie 1 = red etc. using the substr function - is there a better way to do this using JavaScript / HTML?   • Use desktop widget to run corporate web application

    So the question is simple: is it possible to set windows desktop to corporate application page (anybody remembers that active desktop thing?) and use it instead of browser (sic!). My thoughts: Windows 7: I can create giant full-screen widget that will show my page. Still have no idea if I will be able to navigate inside it though. Windows Vista: ???. I know there is still a side bar gadget that hosts a browser. Windows XP: create static html page with iframe pointing to corporate app home page. Problem: clicking links on page still opens default browser.

    Suppose I want to create my own desktop envoriment for Linux, without X. Like Google with the Android did. Where do I start? Is it actually a normal application that just draws stuff, and starts after the kernel boot? And how does it draw it? Using OpenGL or is there something more generic? And graphics drivers, how is it going? You should develop custom graphics drivers for your desktop or it comes with the Linux kernel? Note: It's for normal PCs and not embedded devices. Thanks.

  • Does Active Directory on Server 2003 R2 support IPv6 subnets in Sites and Services?

    I've been experimenting with IPv6 at our organization. The domain controllers (all 2003 R2) and most of the servers (2003 R2 / 2008 / 2008 R2) have IPv6 configured. We have a subnet assigned through a tunnel provider. Currently, the only workstation that is running IPv6 is mine. (Windows 7) I have been noticing that my workstation is picking domain controllers in other sites for things like DFS, and I finally realized that I don't have the IPv6 subnets set up in Active Directory Sites and Services (ADSS). But when I try to add a IPv6 prefix in ADSS, it tells me: Windows cannot create the object 2001:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::/64 because: The object name has bad syntax. I believe I may be using the 2008 version of the admin tools (ADSS reports version 6.1.7601.17514) so I'm wondering if maybe my 2003 R2 Active Directory schema doesn't support configuring IPv6 subnets in ADSS. Is this true? UPDATE Even with 2008 R2 schema in Active Directory, I'm having the same problem. How can I get my IPv6 subnets into Sites and Services?

  • LIBGDX "parsing error emitter" with 2 or more emitters [on hold]

    I have a problem with the use of particle effect of LIBGDX with 2 or more emitters. This week's topic takes a slightly different turn from the normally IIS related topics, but this is key video to help setup either a test or production environment that requires Active Directory. Part of being a web administrator is understanding the servers and how they interact with each other. This week’s lesson takes a different path than usual and covers how to create an Active Directory domain and how to join a member computer to that domain. In less than 13 minutes we complete the entire process, end to end. An understanding of Active Directory is useful, whether it’s simply to setup a test lab, or to learn more so that you can manage a production domain environment. This week starts a mini-series on web farms. Today’s lesson is on setting up a domain which is a necessary prerequisite for next week which will be on Distributed File System Replication (DFS-R), a useful technology for web farms.     For your Monday reading pleasure, the JCP has published Spec Lead Profiles of In Progress/Active JSRs--there are 35 of these Spec Leads!  Find out more about these dedicated community leaders.  In preparing these profiles, the PMO also asked Specification Leads to tell about their experiences  as Spec Leads.  There were many themes that emerged around transparency, openness, agility and participation.  This led to a related article for those interested in learning about the experience of participating in the development of a Java Specification through the JCP program, see: "Active Specification Leads Offer Best Practices and Tips for Success". In Progress/Active JSRs were also reported on in the PMO Presentation during the last JCP EC Face-to-Face meeting in September 2012.   Now is a good time to start thinking about nominations for Star Spec Leads.  Nominations for 2012 are now open.  Anyone can submit a nomination for Star Spec Lead; however, we ask that you nominate an active JSR Spec Lead, operating a JSR under JCP program version 2.8 (introduced October 2011) or above.  Nominations close 31 December 2012.

  • Bare-metal virtualisation for the desktop

    Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge about bare-metal virtualisation products? I'm interested in building a new desktop machine for home, I've been looking at the Intel Quad Core processors and I'd like to put 8GB of RAM in there, but, it got me thinking about making the most out of the available resources. I thought if I could get a good 64bit machine, put some bare-metal virtualisation on, then have a primary system, I'd also be able to bring up some extra virtualised systems as and when I needed. I know most of the bare metal systems are designed for the server market, but, is there anything out there that works well for a desktop. What are the caveats? I presume I won't be able to make the most out of any video cards I could buy, what about just getting a decent screen resolution, will this be a problem? I run a single 24" screen. What about DVD/CD writing, is this possible? I'd like to re-rip my CD collection, I was hoping the quad 64Bit goodness would help me out with the encoding. I currently use a Mac and couldn't go back to windows so that leaves Linux, I was thinking a primary OS of ubuntu. Does this make a difference? Thanks Andrew

  • Advantages of Using Linux as primary developer desktop

    I want to get some input on some of the advantages of why developers should and need to use Linux as their primary development desktop on a daily basic as opposed to using Windows. This is particulary helpful when your Dev, QA, and Production environments are Linux. The current analogy that I keep coming back to is. If I build my demo car as a Ford Escort, but my project car is a Ford Mustang, it doesn't make sense at all. I'm currently at an IT department that allows dual boot with Windows and Linux, but some run Linux while the vast majority use Windows. Here's several advantages that I've came up with since using Linux as a primary desktop. Same Exact operating system as Dev, QA, and Production Same Scripts (.sh) instead of maintaining (.bat and *.sh). Somewhat mitigated by using cygwin, but still a bit different. Team learns simple commands such as: cd, ls, cat, top Team learns Advanced commands like: pkill, pgrep, chmod, su, sudo, ssh, scp Full access to installs typically for Linux, such as RPM, DEB installs just like the target environments. The list could go on and on, but I want to get some feedback of anything that I may have missed, or even any disadvantages (of course there are some). To me it makes sense to migrate an entire team over to using Linux, and using Virtual Box, running Windows XP VM's to test functional items that 95% of most of the world uses.   • Change workarea size of Linux desktop

    I'm trying to write a taskbar/panel for Linux (like fbpanel or pypanel) using GTK# and am a little hung up. I've created a Gtk.Window to act as the panel and positioned/resized it appropriately. I've also set its WindowTypeHint to Dock so that it remains on top of other windows. So far it 'looks' like a panel. However, if the panel is running and I maximize another window, that window fills the whole desktop - meaning the bottom portion of the window is covered up by my panel. I've gathered that I probably need to change the desktop's workarea. How can I go about doing this in C#? (Preferably using GTK#, but I don't mind using interop if it's necessary.) As a bit of a side point, I'm curious if anyone knows how I would go about 'informing' the window manager about where applications' taskbar buttons are. (For example, if the window manager wants to animate the minimize action so that the window shrinks down to its button on the taskbar, how do I let the window manager know where that button is on the taskbar?)

  • Cloning A Database On The Same Server Using Rman Duplicate From Active Database

    To clone a database using Rman we used to require an existing Rman backup, on 11g we can clone databases using the "from active" database option. In this case we do not require an existing backup, the active datafiles will be used as the source for the clone. In order to clone with the source database open it must be on archivelog mode. Otherwise we can make the clone mounting the source database, as shown in this example. These are the steps required to complete the clone: Configure The Network Create A Password File For The New Database Create An Init.Ora For The New Database Create The Admin Directory For The New Database Shutdown And Startup Mount The Source Database Startup Nomount The New Database Connect To The Target (Source) And Auxiliary (New Clone) Databases Using Rman Execute The Duplicate Command Remove The Old Pfile Check The New Database A step by step example is provided on this file: rman-duplicate-from-active-database.pdf

  • Windows 2003 Domain Controller Very Upset about NIC Teaming

    I set up BACS (Broadcom Teaming) to team two NIC on a Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain Controller. Networking still works okay, I can ping the gateway etc, but both DNS and Active Directory fail to start with various 40xx errors. The team that I created is Smart load Balancing with Failover, with one backup and only one in smart load balancing (So really it is just failover).   • What is the best strategy for licensing a desktop application using a web service, when all I need to know is when people use the product?

    Our company's main application is a desktop program that is used at warehouses and written in C# and Windows Presentation Forms. The next thing we want to be able to do is track when customers open up the application and when it is being used. The reason for this is so we can charge them per month, based on if they are/arn't using the application. My boss is having me research different ways to "license" the product under these requirements. Not having any experience doing this, a few things come to mind. I could create a web application that runs on a server, and every time the desktop application is opened and the user logs in, the application connects to the server and marks a database with the DateTime. Or is there licensing software that I can use to accomplish this? Just looking for tips/advice from people who have experience with this type of stuff.

  • How to prevent any files from being copied onto the Desktop?

    Gentlepeeps, Is there any solution to prevent copying of files onto the desktop? My folks and i currently have one super-common-comp in our place. And when all of the laptops are busy, we tend to do some quick surfing on this comp. I prefer to keep things freakishly organized in this comp and one thing i hate is having those off-shoot irritating forwarded downloads on my desktop. Is there some way to restrict files from being copied onto the desktop? I tried making the administrator user's desktop folder as read-only :P . That doesn't solve the problem. Any other ideas/software/solutions? cheers.

  • How do I resolve active directory connection errors when using dcpromo?

    When attempting to promote a secondary server to an existing active directory forest I receive the following error message and can no longer continue. Failed to examine the active directory forest. Value ridMasterDSA.partentDN not found What can cause this and what can be done to fix it? Both servers are 2008 running on x64 and can see each other on the network via their names. FYI: The firewall is turned off on both machines so there should be no issue there. Also the server that i'm adding is already a part of the domain. One server is already a domain controller but I want to add a second to it.

  • How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

    I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?
