• How to use the Raring/Saucy netboot installer to install Precise?

  We have a Haswell motherboard with onboard ethernet controllers which are not supported in the Precise (3.2) kernel. However, we're using netboot installation, and we'd really like to stick with the LTS version. Once the Precise install is completed, we can install the linux-generic-lts-saucy package, which gets us the ethernet hardware support which is ultimately required. So, our options are: Plug in a USB-Ethernet (or even wifi) dongle, perform the install that way. Modify the Precise installer to somehow include the required driver (a udeb, or some early_command invocation?) Modify the Raring installer (3.8 kernel, which supports the device) to instead install Precise. If it's possible the third option seems like the simplest and most logical to me. Now, we are already using the precise-updates installer (Aug 2013), as opposed to the original April 2012 installer. However, the precise-updates installer still appears to use the 3.2 kernel. I'm already comfortable with preseeding and modifying the netboot initrd. So my question is, can I somehow modify the Raring/Saucy netboot initrd to instead install Precise? Thanks.

• Do you know when to send a done email in Scrum?

  At SSW we have always sent done emails to the owner/requestor to let them know that it is done. Others who are dependent on that tasks are CC’ed so they know they can proceed. But how does that fit into Scrum?   Update 14th April 2010 Rule added to Rules to better Scrum with TFS If you are working on a task: When you complete a Task that is part of a User Story you need to send a done email to the Owner of that Story. You only need to add the Task #, Summary and link to the item in WIWA. Remember that all your tasks should be under 4 hours, do spending lots of time on a Done Email for a Task would be counter productive. Add more information if required, for example you may have completed the task a different way than previously discussed.  Make sure that every User Story has an Owner as per the rules. If you are the owner of a story: When you complete a story you should send a comprehensive done email as per the rules when the story had been completed. Make sure you add a list of all of the Tasks that were completed as part of the story and the Done criteria that you completed. If your done criteria says: Built Successfully 30% Code Coverage All tests passed Then add an illustration to show this. Figure: Show that you have met your Done criteria where possible.   This is all designed to help you Scrum Team members (Product Owner, ScrumMaster and Team) validate the quality of the work that has been completed. • Advantages and Disadvantages of the Waterfall Methodology

  In my personal opinion I believe the waterfall method is one of the worst methodologies to use when developing larger systems because it leaves is no room for mistakes. As the name implies the waterfall methodology does not allow  for projects to go back up stream to recover from design errors, missing and/or limited requirements. In addition, hidden bugs are not usually found until the testing phase. This can prove to be very costly and time consuming to the developer and the client. According to NCycles.com, the waterfall methodology structures a project into separate stages with defined deliverables from each phase. Define Design Code Test Implement Document and Maintain The advantages found by Ncycle.com to this methodology are: Ease in analyzing potential changes  Ability to coordinate larger teams, even if geographically distributed Can enable precise dollar budget Less total time required from Subject Matter Experts The disadvantages found by Ncycle.com to this methodology are: Lack of flexibility Hard to predict all needs in advance Intangible knowledge lost between hand-offs Lack of team cohesion Design flaws not discovered until the Testing phase References: NCycles.com  (2002). • Penne alla MVP

  I’m sorry for the long silence on this blog and the long delay in replying to the friends that commented on my articles. I’ve been quite busy in the last weeks and I spent a lot of time traveling around Italy (not for pleasure!). In the meantime I’ve been renewed as an MVP on April the 1st (nice date to renew someone with such a bad sense of humor…). I decided to celebrate my MVP award with a new recipe (to be honest, I celebrated by eating the results of this recipe!) and I decided to call it “penne alla MVP”… just because I’m not good in finding nice names for my recipes. Ingredients (for 4 people): 360g pasta (penne or other short pasta) 300g small shrimps 1 cup of whipped cream 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 small leek 1 glass of beer (I used Hoegaarden dutch white beer… but just because I like it and I finished the rest of the bootle while cooking) Chives Salt, pepper Prepare the pasta by boiling it in salted water, as usual. In the meantime chop the leek in very small bits, heat the oil inside a pan and when the oil is hot, drop the leek chops and let them cook for a few minutes. Add the shrimps and the glass of beer. Let them cook inside beer until they are cooked (if you used pre-cooked shrimps a couple of minutes would be enough to heat them and gave them the flavour of beer). Add the whipped cream and mix it well with the shrimps and the sauce. Dry the pasta and drop the sauce on top of it and then add the chives finely chopped.

• Update Your NetBeans Plugin's "Supported NetBeans Versions" In The Next Two Weeks!

  For each NetBeans plugin uploaded to the NetBeans Plugin Portal, the registration page starts like this: Note how the "Supported NetBeans Versions" field is empty, i.e., no checkbox is checked, for the plugin above. As you can also see, there is a red asterisk next to this field, which means it is mandatory. It is mandatory for the latest version of the NetBeans Plugin Portal, while it wasn't mandatory before, so that several plugins were registered without their supported version being set. Therefore, since the version is now mandatory, anyone who doesn't want their plugin to be hidden for the rest of this year, and removed on 1 January 2013 if no one complains about their absence, needs to go to their plugin's registration page and set a NetBeans Version. E-mails have been sent to plugin developers of unversioned plugins already, over the last weeks. Currently there are 91 plugins that still need to have their NetBeans Version set. Probably at least 1/3 of those are my own plugins, so this is as much a reminder to myself as anyone else! Whether or not you have received an e-mail asking you to set a NetBeans Version for your plugins, please take a quick look anyway and maybe this is a good opportunity to update other information relating to your plugin. You (and I) have two weeks: on Monday 16 April, any NetBeans plugin in the Plugin Portal without a NetBeans Version will be hidden. And then removed, at the start of next year, if no one complains.

• Oracle Java Olympics Between Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

  Last month, 151 universities in 11 locations (Saint-Petersburg, Moscow, Donetsk, Tomsk, Odessa, Rostov-on-Don, Ekaterinburg, Khabarovsk, Almaty, Kiev, and Samara) competed in the second round of the Oracle Java Olympics. For two weeks in February, the best university students from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan were invited to compete with each other and prove just how good they are in Java programming.  A team of engineers from Oracle Development center in Saint-Petersburg prepared the set of problems to solve during the competition. To win, participants needed to show deep knowledge of Java technologies from Classloader and NIO to Reflection and JavaDB. Students in each location had a PC with Oracle JDK 1.7u2 and Netbeans 7.1.  As a testing system, the organizers used the open source software Ejudge (with several tweaks specifically for the competition).  Participants submitted their solutions to the remote server where they were tested by prepared test harnesses. All results were posted in real-time. "I followed the competition coming in from the many sites, and it was a really exciting experience, like a horse race or football game!" exclaimed Java Evangelist Alexander Belokrylov. Congratulations to everyone who competed! The Olympic finals will on April 4th.

• Adaptive Case Management Modeling with CMMN by Jessica Ray

  A new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is now available, so what will that mean for requirements gathering? BPM project requirements can be documented using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0). For ACM, there is a new notation in the works. It is called Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN). For now, this notation isn’t included as a modeling tool in the new version of Oracle BPM Suite 11.1.1.7 with ACM, but it is possible that a modeling tool could be included in a future release. What is CMMN? CMMN is a standard intended to capture the common elements that Case Management Products use, the same way that BPMN is a standard for BPM products (such as Oracle BPM). CMMN is created by the Object Management Group (OMG) and is still in the beta version. In April 2014, OMG released the second beta version the CMMN 1.0, and the most recent version is available here. CMMN captures some of the elements that are commonly used when talking about ACM such as Cases, Milestones, and Tasks. It also introduces some elements that you may not automatically hear when talking about ACM such as Stages, Events, and Decorators. • Google affecting my SERP Rank?

Site Description: Health Articles Blog Site Age: 1.5 years A short history: When I started my website, the few things in my mind when posting content were at-least 500 words on each page and writing of all the articles with to the point information. I didn't go really fast with it which is why I only have about 15 articles in 1.5 years. The SEO strategy was more simple. I shared links through Social Marketing websites and some Article Sharing websites after which I could see my website's rankings in top 5 SERP results. I ranked good enough for about 8 months continuously but didn't keep updating content due to which there were some 3 rough months when no content was posted due to some personal work. The SERPS dropped to 2nd page in April and almost started disappearing in May. I asked a lot of people about it and most came up with the reason of "no updates to site" so I started updating my site again since the day, November has almost started and I see no signs of my website's ranking. Another important point is that when I post a new article, and do a title search in Google, I see it ranks good enough for the first 10 hours and then disappears. What could be wrong here?

• A quick hello to the Western Kentucky .NET User Group

  A few days back, I got a chance to speak at the Western Kentucky .NET User Group meeting in Murray, Kentucky.  The opportunity came up because the original speaker, Jeff Blankenburg, had another obligation and was thus unable to come to this meeting.  I volunteered to deliver his presentation, which is an overview of MIX10 conference. It was a great experience for me; got to drive around and do a little bit of sight-seeing – can’t say I’ve ever been to Kentucky before, so first trip ever there.  I got to meet the user group’s current lead, Tom Turner and got to chat and discuss about all kinds of stuff with the other members.  Cheers to Matt Gawarecki and Brandon Sharp! The presentation itself mostly covers new features in Visual Studio 2010, which was recently released on April 12 – got to demonstrate Historical Debugging in IntelliTrace, Parallel Stacks, View Call Hierarchy and show some Extensions.  We also covered some of the new functionalities in Silverlight 4 (using webcams, drag & drop support among others) and I got to show off Scott Guthrie’s Windows Phone 7 Twitter app.  Altogether, it was quite a bit to cover in 70 minutes or so, but I think everyone enjoyed it. Jeff provided me with the presentation slides (which I modify a bit) and demo applications; so I’m putting it up here for those that may be interested in downloading them.  Please keep in mind that all the demos were made with VS2010 RC, so there may be slight tweaks to get it to work on the RTM version.

• Upcoming events : OBUG Connect Conference 2012

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. Each session can be attended stand alone but they will build on each other to allow someone new to the Oracle Optimizer or SQL tuning to come away from the conference with a better understanding of how the Optimizer works and what techniques they should deploy to tune their SQL. Below is a brief description of each of the sessions Session 7 - 11:30 am Oracle Optimizer: Understanding Optimizer StatisticsThe workshop opens with a discussion on Optimizer statistics and the features introduced in Oracle Database 11g to improve the quality and efficiency of statistics-gathering. The session will also provide strategies for managing statistics in various database environments. Session 27 -  14:30 pm Oracle Optimizer: Explain the Explain PlanThe workshop will continue with a detailed examination of the different aspects of an execution plan, from selectivity to parallel execution, and explains what information you should be gleaning from the plan.   Following up on the Oracle Solaris 11.2 launch on April 29th, if you were able to watch the launch event, you saw Mark Hurd state that Oracle will be No. 1 in high-end computing systems "in a reasonable time frame”.  "This is not a 3-year vision," he continued.Well, According to IDC's latest 1QCY14 Tracker, Oracle has regained the #1 UNIX Shipments Marketshare! • JavaOne Russia: Great Line Up

  I'm (we're) in New York, a week of vacation. (Growing list of photos can be found here.) A week in Brooklyn, and around, flea markets, book stores, museums, music. One of several highlights will be seeing "Death of a Salesman" with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the main role, tomorrow. However, mentally, at least partly, I'm in Moscow, at JavaOne Moscow, 17 & 18 April. http://www.oracle.com/javaone/ru-en/index.html I'm doing two items there, thankfully on the first day, I always think the sooner the better: Tuesday 12:30 - 13:15 -- Unlocking the Java EE 6 Platform (in the Keynote Hall) Tuesday 16:30 - 18:15 -- Rapid Corporate Desktop Development (in HOL Room) Several speakers I'm looking forward to seeing there include Bert Ertman who will be talking about Spring/Java EE 6 migration, Dalibor Topic talking about Lambda expressions in JDK 8, Arun Gupta with his Java EE 6 HOL (appears to be a partial overlap with my session), and various others. And I hope I will make it to Angela Caicedo's HOL on JavaFX. The whole program, which is available via the link above, indicates that many (dare I say "most"?) of the sessions will be using NetBeans in one way or another. Looks like it will be a great conference.

• Are you ready to take a walk in the clouds?

  Cloud computing is here, whether we want it or not.  When I say "a walk in the clouds” I am not talking about a pleasant romantic comedy, but a real alternative to hosting applications on-premise.  For years we have had the power to host our web sites on remote systems.  Sure, challenges existed.  Mostly web sites.  I could, with a few clicks, create a account at a myriad of web host sites, put my site in the hands of a remote hosting company, and boom, I was a site on the internet.  But choices, power, and management was limited. Now, we have a set of services to let us approach and power and control we love, but with scalability of the data center.  My personal web site is hosted on a laptop running hyperV in my basement.  I have to manage the machine, patch it, make sure it is powered up.  This is fine for the “hello, this is my dog skippy site” that I maintain. If the football pool I run has an issue, one of the 10 users I have calls or emails me and I go check it out.  All is well. But this falls well below the needs of even the simplest of enterprises.  A business needs a stronger datacenter, a better pipe to the world.  Do I really want to base my business on a dynamic dns and a dsl line from the local phone company? Cloud computing gives us most of what I value (control, a db of my own, updating my site from Visual Studio). • Hello PCI Council, are you listening?

  Mention "PCI" to any retailer and you'll instantly see them take a deep breath and start looking for the nearest exit.  Nobody wants to be insecure, but few actually believe that PCI does anything more than focus blame directly on retailers.  I applaud PCI for making retailers more aware of the importance of security, but did you have to make them PAINFULLY aware?  POS vendors aren't immune to this pain either as we have to undergo lengthy third-party audits in addition to the internal secure programming programs.  There's got to be a better way. There's a timely article over at StorefrontBacktalk that discusses the inequity of PCI's rules, and also mentions that the PCI Council is accepting comments until April 15th. As a vendor, my biggest issue with PCI is that they require vendors to disclose the details of any breaches, in effect "ratting out" customers.  I don't think its a vendor's place to do this.  I'd rather have the trust of my customers so we can jointly solve the problem. Mary Ann Davidson, Oracle's Chief Security Officer, has an interesting blog posting on this very topic.  Its a bit of a long read, but I found it very entertaining and thought-provoking.  Here's an excerpt: ...heading up the list of “you must be joking” regulations are recent disturbing developments in the Payment Card Industry (PCI) world. I’d like to give [the] PCI kahunas the benefit of the doubt about their intentions, except that efforts by Oracle among others to make them aware of “unfortunate side effects of your requirements” – which is as tactful I can be for reasons that I believe will become obvious below - have gone, to-date, unanswered and more importantly, unchanged. I encourage you to read the entire posting, Pain Comes Instantly, and then provide feedback to the PCI Council.

• Learning curve webdevelopment

  At the moment our team has a huge challenge, we're being asked to deliver a new GUI for an embedded controller. De deadline is very tight and is set on april 2013. Our team is very diverse some people are on the level of functional programming (mostly C), others (including myself) also master object oriented programming (C++, C#). We build a prototype with android, although it has its quirks it is mostly just OO. For the future there is a wish to support multiple platforms (Windows, Android, iOS). In my opinion a HTML5 app with a native app shell is the way to go. When gathering more information on the frameworks to use etc it becomes obvious to me a paradigm shift is needed. None of us have a web background so we need to learn from the ground up. The shift from functional to oo took us about 6 months to become productive (and some of the early subsystems were rewritten because they were a total mess) . Can we expect the learning curve to be similar? Can this be pulled off with a webapp? (My feeling says it will already be hard to pull off as a native app which is at the edge of our comfort zone)
