• Migrating from tomcat to tc server - receiving java.sql.SQLException on startup

  I'm receiving below error when I start tcServer. I do not receive this error on standalone version of tomcat. Is there extra config I need to add for tcServer ? • Multicast hostname lookups on OSX

  I have a problem with hostname lookups on my OSX computer. According to Apple's HK3473 document it says for v10.6: Host names that contain only one label in addition to local, for example "My-Computer.local", are resolved using Multicast DNS (Bonjour) by default. Host names that contain two or more labels in addition to local, for example "server.domain.local", are resolved using a DNS server by default. Which is not true as my testing. If I try to open a connection on my local computer to a remote port: telnet example.domain.local 22 then it will lookup the IP address with multicast DNS next to the A and AAAA lookups. This causes a two seconds lookup timeout on every lookup. Which is a lot! When I try with IPv4 only then it won't use the multicast queries to fetch the remote address just the simple A queries. telnet -4 example.domain.local 22 When I try with IPv6 only: telnet -6 example.domain.local 22 then it will lookup with multicast DNS and AAAA again, and the 2 seconds timeout delay occurs again. I've tried to create a resolver entry to my /etc/resolver/domain.local, and /etc/resolver/local.1, but none of them was working. Is there any way to disable this multicast lookups for the "two or more label addition to local" domains, or simply disable it for the selected subdomain (domain.local)? Thank you!

• Application/Server dependency mapping

  I'm just curious as to whether such as tool exists (free, open source, or commercial but for a reasonable price) before I build it myself. We're looking for a simple solution to simplify taking web apps online and offline when a server is undergoing maintenance. The idea is that we be able to mark a server as unavailable, and then mark all dependent (direct and indirect) as offline. Our first proof-of-concept is running, and we created an aspx page that lists various applications that have an App_Offline.html file with a friendly "Down for Maintenance" message in a GridView. In the GridView, each app has a LinkButton that, when clicked, either renames the App_Offline.htm to App_Offline.html or vice-versa to take the app online and offline. The next step is to set up all of our dependencies. For example, our store locater would be dependent on our web services, which in turn are dependent on our SQL Server. (that's a simple example. We can easily have several layers, or one app dependent on multiple servers, etc.) In this example, if the SQL server goes down, we would need to drill down recursively to find all apps that depend on it, and then turn them off and on by renaming the App_Offline file appropriately. I realize this will be relatively simple to build, but could be complex to manage. I'm sure we're not the first team to think of this concept, and I'm wondering if there are any open source tools, or if any of you have done something similar and can help us avoid pitfalls. Edit - Update I found the category of software I'm looking for. it's called CMDB - (Configuration Management Database), and it's generally more of a Network Admin type tool than a developer tool. I found some open source products in this category, but none written in .NET. I had considered moving this question to ServerFault.com when I realized I was looking for a netowrk Admin type tool, but since I'm looking for code and a modifiable solution I'll keep the question here.

• Copied Netbeans IDE Maven Web project failes to compile

  If I am going to make serious changes to my project I like to make a copy (right click project and select copy). I have created copies of my projects many times (maven web applications included) without issue. Now all I do is copy the project making no changes, leaving the copy settings on default (project name etc) and then try to run it and spring decides to take issue with it. Again I try running the original and it works. I deleted the faulty copy, restarted and tried again and still it does not work. • Rails: Multiple "has_many through" for the two same models?

However, I need to add another relationship for liking (as in, a User "likes" a Fantasy rather than "has" it... think of Facebook and how you can "like" a wall-post, even though it doesn't "belong" to you... in fact, the Facebook example is almost exactly what I'm aiming for). I gathered that I should make another association, but I'm kinda confused as to how I might use it, or if this is even the right approach. I started by adding the following: class Fantasy < ActiveRecord::Base ... has_many :users, :through => :approvals has_many :approvals, :dependent => :destroy end class User < ActiveRecord::Base ... has_many :fantasies, :through => :approvals has_many :approvals, :dependent => :destroy end class Approval < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :fantasy end ... but how do I create the association through Approval rather than through Fantasizing? • Rails Polymorphic Association with multiple associations on the same model

I have a Photo class that is used all over my app. A post can have a single photo. However, I want to re-use the polymorphic relationship to add a secondary photo. Before: class Photo belongs_to :attachable, :polymorphic => true end class Post has_one :photo, :as => :attachable, :dependent => :destroy end Desired: class Photo belongs_to :attachable, :polymorphic => true end class Post has_one :photo, :as => :attachable, :dependent => :destroy has_one :secondary_photo, :as => :attachable, :dependent => :destroy end However, this fails as it cannot find the class "SecondaryPhoto". Based on what I could tell from that other thread, I'd want to do: has_one :secondary_photo, :as => :attachable, :class_name => "Photo", :dependent => :destroy Except calling Post#secondary_photo simply returns the same photo that is attached via the Photo association, e.g. Post#photo === Post#secondary_photo. Looking at the SQL, it does WHERE type = "Photo" instead of, say, "SecondaryPhoto" as I'd like... Thoughts? Thanks!

  I have a form which is essentially an autocomplete input box. I can get this to work perfectly for a single text box. What I need to do is create unique input boxes by using a php for loop. This will use the counter $i to give each input box a unique name and id. The problem is that the unique value of the input box needs to be passed to the javascript. this will then pass the inputted data to the external php page and return the mysql results. • Rails active record association problem

  Hello, I'm new at active record association in rails so i don't know how to solve the following problem: I have a tables called 'meetings' and 'users'. I have correctly associated these two together by making a table 'participants' and set the following association statements: class Meeting < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :participants, :dependent => :destroy has_many :users, :through => :participants and class Participant < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :meeting belongs_to :user and the last model class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :participants, :dependent => :destroy At this point all is going well and i can access the user values of attending participants of a specific meeting by calling @meeting.users in the normal meetingshow.html.erb view. Now i want to make connections between these participants. Therefore i made a model called 'connections' and created the columns of 'meeting_id', 'user_id' and 'connected_user_id'. So these connections are kinda like friendships within a certain meeting. My question is: How can i set the model associations so i can easily control these connections? I would like to see a solution where i could use @meeting.users.each do |user| user.connections.each do |c| <do something> end end I tried this by changing the model of meetings to this: class Meeting < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :participants, :dependent => :destroy has_many :users, :through => :participants has_many :connections, :dependent => :destroy has_many :participating_user_connections, :through => :connections, :source => :user Please, does anyone have a solution/tip how to solve this the rails way?

• Joins in single-table queries

  Tables are only metadata. They don’t store data. I’ve written something about this before, but I want to take a viewpoint of this idea around the topic of joins, especially since it’s the topic for T-SQL Tuesday this month. Hosted this time by Sebastian Meine (@sqlity), who has a whole series on joins this month. Good for him – it’s a great topic. In that last post I discussed the fact that we write queries against tables, but that the engine turns it into a plan against indexes. My point wasn’t simply that a table is actually just a Clustered Index (or heap, which I consider just a special type of index), but that data access always happens against indexes – never tables – and we should be thinking about the indexes (specifically the non-clustered ones) when we write our queries. I described the scenario of looking up phone numbers, and how it never really occurs to us that there is a master list of phone numbers, because we think in terms of the useful non-clustered indexes that the phone companies provide us, but anyway – that’s not the point of this post. So a table is metadata. It stores information about the names of columns and their data types. Nullability, default values, constraints, triggers – these are all things that define the table, but the data isn’t stored in the table. The data that a table describes is stored in a heap or clustered index, but it goes further than this. All the useful data is going to live in non-clustered indexes. Remember this. It’s important. Stop thinking about tables, and start thinking about indexes. So let’s think about tables as indexes. This applies even in a world created by someone else, who doesn’t have the best indexes in mind for you. I’m sure you don’t need me to explain Covering Index bit – the fact that if you don’t have sufficient columns “included” in your index, your query plan will either have to do a Lookup, or else it’ll give up using your index and use one that does have everything it needs (even if that means scanning it). If you haven’t seen that before, drop me a line and I’ll run through it with you. Or go and read a post I did a long while ago about the maths involved in that decision. So – what I’m going to tell you is that a Lookup is a join. When I run SELECT CustomerID FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader WHERE SalesPersonID = 285; against the AdventureWorks2012 get the following plan: I’m sure you can see the join. Don’t look in the query, it’s not there. But you should be able to see the join in the plan. It’s an Inner Join, implemented by a Nested Loop. It’s pulling data in from the Index Seek, and joining that to the results of a Key Lookup. It clearly is – the QO wouldn’t call it that if it wasn’t really one. It behaves exactly like any other Nested Loop (Inner Join) operator, pulling rows from one side and putting a request in from the other. You wouldn’t have a problem accepting it as a join if the query were slightly different, such as SELECT sod.OrderQty FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader AS soh JOIN Sales.SalesOrderDetail as sod on sod.SalesOrderID = soh.SalesOrderID WHERE soh.SalesPersonID = 285; Amazingly similar, of course. This one is an explicit join, the first example was just as much a join, even thought you didn’t actually ask for one. You need to consider this when you’re thinking about your queries. But it gets more interesting. Consider this query: SELECT SalesOrderID FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader WHERE SalesPersonID = 276 AND CustomerID = 29522; It doesn’t look like there’s a join here either, but look at the plan. That’s not some Lookup in action – that’s a proper Merge Join. The Query Optimizer has worked out that it can get the data it needs by looking in two separate indexes and then doing a Merge Join on the data that it gets. Both indexes used are ordered by the column that’s indexed (one on SalesPersonID, one on CustomerID), and then by the CIX key SalesOrderID. Just like when you seek in the phone book to Farley, the Farleys you have are ordered by FirstName, these seek operations return the data ordered by the next field. This order is SalesOrderID, even though you didn’t explicitly put that column in the index definition. The result is two datasets that are ordered by SalesOrderID, making them very mergeable. Another example is the simple query SELECT CustomerID FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader WHERE SalesPersonID = 276; This one prefers a Hash Match to a standard lookup even! This isn’t just ordinary index intersection, this is something else again! Just like before, we could imagine it better with two whole tables, but we shouldn’t try to distinguish between joining two tables and joining two indexes.   I have a basic interpreter in clojure. Now i need to implement for (initialisation; finish-test; loop-update) { statements } Implement a similar for-loop for the interpreted language. The pattern will be: (for variable-declarations end-test loop-update do statement) The variable-declarations will set up initial values for variables.The end-test returns a boolean, and the loop will end if end-test returns false.   Hi experts, I am developing an desktop based application using VB.NET, similar to add/remove program. everything was working fine until i start working on uninstall feature. Now what am i doing is that i get the uninstall string of the specific application from the registry and use System.Diagnostics.Process to run UninstallString.   I have just install slime in emacs. And after removed all the other plugins for debuging, I found that slime seems had conflicts with autopair.(Or a bug of autopair?).In slime, when I typed C-c C-c, the minibuffer displayed error like: error in process filter: define-key: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil error in process filter: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil error in process filter: define-key: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil error in process filter: Wrong type argument: characterp, nil Even more, the error message still alerted after I killed the slime buffer. • MATLAB: svds() not converging

  So using MATLAB's svds() function on some input data as such: [U, S, V, flag] = svds(data, nSVDs, 'L') I noticed that from run to run with the same data, I'd get drastically different output SVD sizes from run to run. When I checked whether 'flag' was set, I found that it was, indicating that the SVDs had not converged. My normal system here would be that if it really needs to converge, I'd do something like this: flag = 1 svdOpts = struct('tol', 1e-10, 'maxit', 600, 'disp', 0); while flag: if svdOpts.maxit > 1e6 error('There''s a real problem here.') end [U, S, V, flag] = svds(data, nSVDs, 'L', svdOpts) svdOpts.maxit = svdOpts.maxit*2 end But from what I can tell, when you use 'L' as the third argument, the fourth argument is ignored, meaning I just have to deal with the fact that it's not converging? I'm not even really sure how to use the 'sigma' argument in place of the 'L' argument. I've also tried reducing the number of SVDs calculated to no avail. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated. EDIT While following up on the comments below, I found that the problem had to do with the way I was building my data matrices. Turned out I had accidentally inverted a matrix and had an input of size (4000x1) rather than (20x200), which was what was refusing to converge. I also did some more timing tets and found that the fourth argument was not, in fact, being ignored, so that's on me. Thanks for the help guys.

Third-class value even can't be passed as an argument. Why should these things defined like that? As I understand, "can be passed as an argument" means it can be pushed into the runtime stack;"can be assigned into a variable" means it can be moved into a different location of the memory; "can be returned from a subroutine" almost has the same meaning of "can be assigned into a variable" since the returned value always be put into a known address, so first class value is totally "movable" or "dynamic",second class value is half "movable" , and third class value is just "static", such as labels in C/C++ which just can be addressed by goto statement, and you can't do nothing with that address except "goto" .Does My understanding make any sense? or what do these three kinds of values mean exactly?
