• Emacs editor copy and deletion

  I am a huge fan of emacs.. But even after 1 year of practising on emacs I am unable to solve these three annoying issues about emacs please help me! 1.Whenever I want to copy the content from emacs into other things such as a website textarea I have to use GUI copy button because ctrl+w doesn't work. Is there any way to do this from emacs-command line. 2.Whenever I delete something using ctrl+shft+SPC or ctrl+k etc I don't want it to be stored in kill ring how do I do it(I know ctrl+D does this but it deletes only one char at a time)? 3.Whenever I select text by mouse and press backspace then text goes into kill ring(Which I want to change as mentioned) but same doesn't happen when I select text with ctrl+SPC(set mark) and then ctrl+f/ctrl+b etc. Please help me! • Copy only folders not files?

  Is there a way to copy an entire directory, but only the folders? I have a corrupt file somewhere in my directory which is causing my hard disks to fail. So instead of copying the corrupt file to another hard disk, I wanted to just copy the folders, because I have scripts that search for hundreds of folders, and I don't want to have to manually create them all. I did search the cp manual, but couldn't see anything (I may have missed it) Say I have this structure on my failed HDD: dir1 files dir2 files files dir4 dir3 files All I a want is the directory structure, not any files at all. So I'd end up with on the new HDD: dir1 dir2 dir4 dir3 Hoping someone knows some tricks!

  I actually want to change the default text editor on my Ubuntu 12.04 from nano to Geany. When I used this code: update-alternatives --config editor .. I don't see Geany in the list. So to add Geany, this is supposed to work right? update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/geany geany /usr/bin/geany 10 Also, on a side note, can you tell me if you would personally suggest me to change the default editor from nano to Geany, and why?

• Which programming language to get into?

  I'm ending my third term in a few weeks so I have some spare time coming up. I'd like to spend it seriously digging into programming. My problem: I'm not sure which language to begin with. Just to be clear, I don't want to start a language-y-compared-to-language-z discussion. There are a some other issues that play a major role. In my 5th term I'm going to be participating in a major practical course which will include either Java or C programming. It will take a lot of time and energy, as I found out while talking to a few students who passed the final exams (only 15% pass on their first try). Which practical course I will take is randomly decided. My skills so far are the absolute basics of Java and C programming. I know the different data types and how to handle them, objects, pointers, thread programming, etc. All of that is on a very low level, though. My question now is, what language should I start seriously practicing? Java: I did my first GUIs with this language. I'm familiar with Eclipse but I need a project to work on (which I don't have) to really keep me pushing. Besides that, I don't think it would help me if I have to do C in a year. C: As with Java, I can't think of a personal project to keep me working and keep me interested in programming. If I get assigned to Java in a year, this wouldn't give me any advantages either, would it? (No objects, etc.) Objective-C: I recently came up with this idea. I have a Mac; I'm not really familiar with Xcode but I have one or two personal projects I'd like to work on. Further, I would be working with objects (as in Java) and C language constructs which would both be great for this practical course in a year. What do you think I should begin with? Should I just stick to Java and hope for the best, force myself through C or start (nearly) completely from the beginning with Objective C? Maybe you folks could give me some good advice that would stop me from switching from one language to the next?

  Does anyone of you know a cross browser working way to detect paste or drag'n'drop inserts into an editable html document (with designMode or contentEditable enabled). Detecting paste works as long as the user uses the Ctrl-V shortcut as it generated key events, but if you use the browsers Edit-Paste no events are generated it seems.

• Imperative vs. component based programming [closed]

  I've been thinking about how programming and more specifically the teaching of programming is advocated amongst the community (online). Often I've heard that Ruby and RoR is an ideal platform for learning to program. I completely disagree... RoR and Ruby are based on the application of the component based paradigm, which means they are ideal for rapid application development. This is much like the MVC model in PHP and ASP.NET But, learning a proper imperative language like Java or C/C++ (or even Perl and PHP) is the only way for a new programmer to explore logic itself, and not get too bogged down in architectural concerns like the need for separation of concerns, and the preference for components. Maybe it's a personal preference thing. I rather think that the most interesting aspects to programming are the procedural bits of code I write that actually do stuff rather than the project planning, and modelling that comes about from fully object oriented engineering or simply using the MVC model. I know this may sound confused to some of you. I feel strongly though that the best way for programming to be taught is through imperative and procedural methods. Architectural (component) methods come later, if at all. After all, none of the amazing algorithms that exist were based on OOP practice! It's all procedural code when it comes to the 'magic'. OOP is useful in creating products and utilities. Algorithms are what makes things happen, and move data around, and so imperative (and/or procedural) code are what matters most. When I see programmers recommending Ruby on Rails to newbie developers, I think it's just so wrong. Just because you write less code with Ruby does not make it easier to do! It's the opposite... you have to know loads more to appreciate its succinct nature. New coders who really want to understand the nuts and bolts of coding need to go away and figure out writing methods/functions (i.e. imperative programming) and working in procedural style, in order to grasp the fundamentals, first, before looking into architectural ways of working. So, my question is: should Ruby ever be recommended as a first language? I think no (obviously)... what arguments are there for it?

  For some time I've been interested in binding the Windows Key (Super_L) on my keyboard to Copy and Paste for no other reason but convenience and consistency between my desktop and my MacBook. I thought that I was close after reading about xmodmap and executing the following: $ # re-map Super_L to Mode_switch, the 3rd col in keymap table `xmodmap -pke` $ xmodmap -e "keycode 133 = Mode_switch" $ # map Mode_switch+c to copy $ xmodmap -e "keycode 54 = c C XF86_Copy C" $ # map Mode_switch+v to paste $ xmodmap -e "keycode 55 = v V XF86_Paste V" Unfortunately, XF86Copy and XF86Paste don't seem to work, at all.   Hi So, I'm using RealVNC Viewer locally (Mac OSX 10.6) and connecting to a VNC Server on a remote machine (Debian - I'm no Unix expert). I want to be able to copy and paste at the command line, but Ctrl+V, Shift+V and Command+V all do nothing on the remote command line. First question: should I be trying a different combination of keys? Secondly, if it's not that I'm using the wrong combination of keys, how can I configure VNC Server to accept copy and paste? I have 'Share clipboard with VNC Server' checked locally, so I figure it must be a problem on the remote machine. I only have command-line access on the remote machine (though I am root) so I need to configure the option somehow via the command line.

• VirtualBox 4.1.20 (Windows 7 / Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit)) copy/paste is broken

  I have a Windows 7 Pro host, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS guest. I cannot get the shared clipboard working. I have installed Guest Additions 4.1.20 on VirtualBox 4.1.20, have restarted, followed instructions found at http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#idp18411760, and have enabled bidirectional clipboard sharing within VirtualBox options. However, I still cannot copy and paste between the host and guest. Copy/paste works great within the host, and within the guest, but not between the two. I'm out of ideas.

• Can't paste symbol from Character viewer in Mac to Photoshop

  This is extremely annoying: I want to paste in a special symbol in Photoshop using the Character Viewer in Mac. I understand that there are some fonts that do not support these symbols, but when I paste this symbol in Photoshop, it appears as an unknown symbol (similar to this: ? ), and I can't even change the font (to anything), it skips back to Myriad Pro. I found a stupid solution to this: using the arrows to change fonts - this seems to work, but still Photoshop doesn't show all fonts that are available in Character Viewer under Font Variation Have you experienced this? I can't remember if it was the same with Windows, but I know there were some bugs too.

  SnowLeopard. I commonly use copy in a terminal window to grab stuff I have to paste. A few times in the last few days, the clipboard has gotten 'stuck' on some old text. I do the copy gesture (with keyboard or Edit menu) in the terminal window. I paste somewhere else, and get something other than what I just copied. If all else fails, I can always tell the terminal to write it's content to a file and use that. But I'm wondering if there's something I'm doing to get into this pickle and if there's any way out.

• How do I increase copy/paste buffer size in Linux

  Hi all, I'm trying to copy and paste lines of code to the linux terminal. However, I've noticed that when the copied text is too long (let's say, 60 or more lines), it gets trimmed and altered in an apparently random way (e.g. some characters missing). I found the same problem in Ubuntu Karmic Koala, Fedora 10 and Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. Any clue why this happens and if I can increase the size of safely copy/pasteable text? Thanks!

  Hello I cannot copy photos and paste them from a word document into the text of an email on my Sony Laptop having already substantially redcued the size of the photos using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I can readily manage to perform this functjon from my work place PC but am presently working mostly from home. I am trying to email photos and text using a btinternet.com email address but have checked that I cannot perform the task using my alternate googlemail email address either. I can obviously highlight the relevant photographs but whenever I try to copy or cut them into the email text the paste function is disabled. Assistance would be much appreciated. Kind regards Simon

• Macro - maintain paste link if new row is added to master spreadsheet

  I have a master spreadsheet that has a portion of data (say columns a to e) that paste links to a report. Each row paste links to its own report. If I add a new row to the master spreadsheet I now have the wrong data linking into my reports. I know if I have the reports open when a change is made to the master it will update the reports. However, with the number of reports I will soon have this will no longer be practical. Is there a macro or formula that can be added to maintain the correct data link. I have no real knowledge on such matters and as much information as possible would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

• Remap Copy and Paste shortcuts on a Mac

  I use Windows at work and a Mac at home. One of the biggest issues is the difference between the copy paste shortcuts on Windows vs the Mac i.e. Ctrl + C & Ctrl + V on Windows and on the Mac its Command + C and Command + V. Invariably its hard because of learnt motor skills where my hand always shapes itself to the Windows Ctrl + C configuration(I have been using Windows longer) I would like to remap the Copy and Paste to the Fn + C and Fn + V on the Mac. Why? Because the Fn key is actually the key that corresponds to where the Ctrl key is on Windows keyboards and since its the last edge key its easy to find. I have tried Double Command but it doesn't seem to have an option of turning Fn to the Command key.

  I suspect the solution will be related to this question?? I have a spreadsheet that comes to me pre-formatted with hidden columns sprinkled in multiple places (for viewing brevity's sake). I need to turn on filtering, apply a filter to one of the columns, and then paste the resulting rows to a new sheet - including the hidden columns (lather, rinse, repeat). I'd prefer to not undo/re-do the hidden columns unless I have to. Is it possible to paste the hidden columns without adding the extra steps?

• Programming languages with a Lisp-like syntax extension mechanism

  I have only a limited knowledge of Lisp (trying to learn a bit in my free time) but as far as I understand Lisp macros allow to introduce new language constructs and syntax by describing them in Lisp itself. This means that a new construct can be added as a library, without changing the Lisp compiler / interpreter. This approach is very different from that of other programming languages. E.g., if I wanted to extend Pascal with a new kind of loop or some particular idiom I would have to extend the syntax and semantics of the language and then implement that new feature in the compiler. Are there other programming languages outside the Lisp family (i.e. apart from Common Lisp, Scheme, Clojure (?), Racket (?), etc) that offer a similar possibility to extend the language within the language itself? EDIT Please, avoid extended discussion and be specific in your answers. Instead of a long list of programming languages that can be extended in some way or another, I would like to understand from a conceptual point of view what is specific to Lisp macros as an extension mechanism, and which non-Lisp programming languages offer some concept that is close to them.

  It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration -- Edsger W. Dijkstra I have deep respect to Dijkstra but I don't agree with everything he said/wrote. I disagree specially with this quote on linked paper wrote 35 years ago about the Dartmouth BASIC implementation. Many of my coworkers or friends programmers started with BASIC, questions below have answers that indicate many programmers had their first experience on programming at BASIC. AFAIK many good programmers started at BASIC programming. I'm not talking about Visual Basic or other "modern" dialects of BASIC running on machines full of resources. I'm talking about old times BASIC running on "toy" computer, that the programmer had to worry about saving small numbers that need not be calculated as a string to save a measly byte because the computer had only a few hundreds of them, or have to use computed goto for lack of a more powerful feature, and many other things which require the programmer to think much before doing something and forcing the programmer to be creative. If you had experience with old time BASIC on a machine with limited resources (have in mind that a simple micro-controller today has much more resources than a computer in 1975, do you think that BASIC help your mind to find better solutions, to think like an engineer or BASIC drag you to dark side of programming and mutilated you mentally? Is good to learn a programming language running on a computer full of resources where the novice programmer can do all wrong and the program runs without big problems? Or is it better to learn where the programmer can't go wrong? What can you say about the BASIC have helped you to be a better/worse programmer? Would you teach old BASIC running on a 2KB (virtual) machine to a coming programmer? Sure, only exposure to BASIC is bad. Maybe you share my opinion that modern BASIC doesn't help too much because modern BASIC, as long other programming languages, gives facilities which allow the programmer doesn't think deeper. • Optimistic non-locking copy of InnoDB .frm files

  MySQL Enterprise Backup(MEB) does hot backup of innodb data and log files. Till MEB 3.6.1, the user backs up the only innodb tables in a 3 step process: STEP 1. Take backup using --only-innodb option STEP 2. Temporarily make the table read only by executing “FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK” MEB 3.7.0 has an enhancement to innodb file copying. The .frm files gets copied along with the hot backup done for innodb files. I would like to make the blog a little interactive by explaining the feature as answers: 1. What are these .frm files? The files containing the metadata, such as the table definition, of a MySQL table. For backups, the full set of .frm files are always required along with the backup data, to be able to restore tables that are altered or dropped after the backup. 2. Can the .frm files not be copied by MEB itself? --only-innodb-with-frm is the new option introduced in MEB 3.7.1 to do a copy of .frm files without locking the tables during backup operation itself. This is to reduce the pain of manually copying the .frm files. The option is intended for backups where you can ensure that no ALTER TABLE, CREATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, or other DDL statements modify the .frm files for InnoDB tables during the backup operation. 3. How is data consistency ensured? MEB does validation of the .frm files after copying by comparing with the server directory to see if the timestamps of any of the .frm files is greater than the saved system time (check .frm time).  This change in timestamp of the .frm files will show if a table is altered during the process of backup. The total number of frm files in the server directory is also verified against the copied contents. If the number of .frm files is less compared to server directory, it shows that table/tables have been dropped during the process of backup. If the number of .frm files is more compared to server directory, it shows that new table/tables have been created during backup operation. 4. How does MEB handle data inconsistency? MEB copies the .frm files through several iterations,  does the validation and throws a WARNING if there is any inconsistency found in .frm files at the end of backup operation. This means the user is warned of some DDL operations that had occurred during backup operation, and has to manually copy the .frm files or do a backup again. 5. What is the option and explain its usage? The option introduced is --only-innodb-with-frm which does optimistic copy of .frm files without locking. This can be used when the user wants to backup only innodb tables along with .frm files. The option can take one of the 2 values: all | related. --only-innodb-with-frm=all does copy of all .frm files of all innodb tables. --only-innodb-with-frm=related works in conjunction with --include option.This is to allow partial backup of .frm files corresponding to the tables specified in --include. Let me show the usage with example output: ./mysqlbackup -uroot --backup-dir=/logs/backupWithFrmAll --only-innodb-with-frm=all backup MySQL Enterprise Backup version 3.7.1 [2012/06/05] Copyright (c) 2003, 2012, Oracle and/or its affiliates. In a nutshell, we present our great new option --only-innodb-with-frm which is a true hot InnoDB-only backup with .frm files, but with an additional check, if any DDL happened during the backup. If a DDL has happened, the DBA can decide if to repeat the backup, or to live with the potential inconsistency. • Extending Programming Languages

  (Since I just posted this in another question, but my browser had to be annoying and submit it without content first, here it is again:) I'm a fan of clean code. I like my languages to be able to express what I'm trying to do, but I like the syntax to mirror that too. For example, I work on a lot of programs in Objective-C for jailbroken iPhones, which patch other code using the method_setImplementation() function of the runtime. Or, in pyobjc, I have to use the syntax UIView.initWithFrame_(), which is also pretty awful and unreadable with the way the method names are structured. In both cases, the language does not support this in syntax. I've found three basic ways that this is done: Insane macros. Take a look at this "CaptainHook", it does what I'm looking for in a usable way, but it isn't quite clean and is a major hack. There's also "Logos", which implements a very nice syntax, but is written in Perl parsing my code with a ton of regular expressions. This scares me. I like the idea of adding a %hook ClassName, but not by using regular expressions to parse C or Objective-C. Finally, there is Cycript. This is an extension to JavaScript which interfaces with the Objective-C runtime and allows you to use Objective-C style code in your JavaScript, and inject that into other processes. This is likely the cleanest as it actually uses a parser for the JavaScript, but I'm not a huge fan of that language in general. Basically, this is a two part question. Should, and how should, I create an extension to Python and Objective-C to allow me to do this? Is it worth writing a parser for my language to transform the syntax into something nicer, if it is only in a very specialized niche like this? Should I just live with the horrible syntax of the default Objective-C hooking or pyobjc?
