• Converting a VMware player image from non-persistant to persistant

  I'm pondering setting up a virtual machine to generate app-v (since i got mdop from school) or thinapp application virtualisation packages. Ideally with either of these, i should work off a fresh system do the install, then copy out the packages produced. I'd like to not have to reinstall windows per package to get a fresh, unmodified stock copy of windows. I'm aware that its possible to make a hard disk image persistant in vmware player (one of my lecturers did it, but he's in another country). I'm wondering how would i convert a persistant image to a non persistant one? I'm currently running vmware player 4, with windows 7 guest and host.

• How to Enable geoip on magento with varnish page cache

  I currently have 3 stores online with 3 different domains, running magento with Apache and varnish (using Phoenix page cache extension) running on centos One store is for uk, another for Ireland and another for USA Trouble is (Example) If an US user hits the uk store , I would like the user to be notified to go to the correct store on the page, (I do not want them automatically redirected) I was able to php-pecl-geoip with maxmind database to get this to work, but as users on my website have increased I had to begin using varnish. how could I implement this functionality on with varnish so I know what country the user is from so I can display a message to the user to view their relevant website?

  I am interested in purchasing a netbook to do field research in another country. My hardware specifications for the nebtook: -Be rugged enough to survive a bit of wear and tear -Fairly fast processing (the ability to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB) -A battery life of longer than 6 hours -At least a 10 inch screen -A decent camera for Skyping My software needs: -Be able run a Spreadsheet program to do basic data input (like Excel or Open Office) -Use the Open Source Statistical Program R to do basic data analysis (Regression, data analysis etc.) -Word Processing (Word or Open Office) Do you have any suggestions on which models or brands my fit my needs? • Exposing a WebServer behind a firewall without Port Forwarding

  We are deploying web applications in java using tomcat on client machines across the country. Once they are installed, we want to allow a remote access to these web applications through a central server, but we do not want our clients to have to open ports on their routers. Is there a way to tunnel the http traffic so that people connected to the central server can access the web applications that are behind a firewall ? The central server has a static ip address and we have full control over it. Right now, it is a windows box but it could be changed to a linux box if necessary. Our clients are running windows xp and up. We don't need to access the filesystem, we only want to access the web application through a browser. We have looked at reverse ssh tunneling but it shows scaling problem since every packet would have to pass through the central server.

I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist? Most of us are academicians with little practical experience.   i want to design a large scale network for an organization with HQ and two branches. i want to use a class A subnet. if i am using the network address 30.0.0.0 for the whole organization how can it be different from another organization company or whatever which is using the same address in another country? now i have the three locations for this organization,so i need 5 subnets [one for the HQ,two for branch A and branch B , one for connecting A to HQ and one for connecting branch B with HQ since i will use central DHCP server at the HQ,is that (number of subnetting) right? is it advisable to use class A or class B for this organization it term of address that will be wasted (let's say it is a university with two branches in two different states)?!

• Router's ssid changes from infrastructure to ad-hoc

  For a period of time the router's ssid is shown (on various computers) as a normal infrastructure network - computers connect fine and everything works however after a few minutes / hours all computers see the same ssid as an ad-hoc network (not infrastructure). At this point a computer that was already connected continues to work - a computer that isn't cannot connect. Rebooting the router temporarily restores the visibility of the correct infrastructure ssid. Is something interfering?   I come from a part of the world where the average Hollywood movie is released a year + later than in US. For example: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released only 5-6 months down the lane. The Reader, I think will not be released at all. Is this a right justification for me to download movies from the torrent networks and watch them? Even if I don’t share it? P.S I don’t think my country has all these American type cyber laws to catch me. It’s just the guilt feeling. Note: SuperUser is not a legal resource.

• Block p2p downloading in my office?

  I work in an education office in a third world country. We pay for internet by the megabyte (no other choice) and have lately been using an incredible amount of bandwidth. This is because the office staff have found out about p2p sharing. As far as I know, Limewire is the only program they're using, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they discover the more general world of bittorrent. Using only a linksys router (that I could flash), is there any way for me prevent the office from destroying our bandwidth cap by downloading personal items (against policy). Even semi-fixes would be better than nothing.

As I suppose, I need to set up some kind of load balancer, that would deternime from which country my user is, and resolve it to US/Germany server. • Internet connectivity issues with one router but work ok with other router

  I have one Tplink ADSL ROUTER and when i enter username and password on setup page then everything works fine. Now i have one more router Netgear router then when i enter same username and password then interworks ok for some 50% websites but for other 50% websites the page is not loaded and it hangs there. In the sats bar it says website found , waiting for reply and it hnags there and no site is displayed. I wonder which setting is different on these two routers. The Tplink router i have bought is from local shop but netgear router is from different country. Can that make some difference

• IP Tunneling for Spotify? [closed]

  I was in the UK and enjoyed Spotify relentlessly. Now I've moved back to Greece and I can't even pay for the darn thing. So my idea was this- I have a server in France and it has a fail-over IP in the UK. So I installed a proxy server on it and made it listen to the UK IP. So far so good. Then, I played Spotify for a while through the proxy server just fine, and it thought I was in the UK. But now... it gives me an error message that I'm in another country than the one on my profile (UK). I don't really understand why - maybe they also geolocate the IP address of the client, not just the proxy server? Either way, I'm kinda stuck - is there a way to tunnel Spotify's network traffic through my server transparently? Maybe a VPN or something similar? Thanks

• Significant OS X Finder lag when listing directories/files

  I'm experiencing some significant OS X finder lag, that seems to be purely an issue with Finder itself, and not the HD or any other part of OS X (I'll explain below). The lag only appears to be when listing directories/files, where I'm seeing up to twelve or so seconds of lag (the folder opens with a blank list and the spinner going in the bottom right). This happens with both the local SSD and network drives (connected via ethernet or wifi) Browsing both local and network drives in terminal and listing directories is instant I can actually browse files on my NAS from my phone over a 3G connection from the other side of the country faster than Finder can when connected to the local network (madness!) Can anyone help? Thanks.

My TV can connect to YouTube, but in my country this site is filtered. I want to use an antifilter(proxy) program to bypass the filtering. • ISPs with good upload speeds? [closed]

  I am a web developer, and I spend most of my time not waiting for downloads but waiting for my latest build of a website to publish to a test site. I use the excellent BeyondCompare to ensure I only upload what I need to upload. But still, if a 2MB C# DLL has changed, so be it. And I must wait. At work we host our own servers and have a dedicated line, so for 8.5 hours of my day I have blistering upload speeds across the web, which is nice. At home however, it's a different story. I am with Virgin Media on their XL internet package (I think). I think that means I get 256Kb upload and 20Mb download. So I have began to wonder - are there any ISPs in the UK with good upload speeds? If you know of any for other countries, do post for other's sake, but please specify which country your post is relevant to.

• How do i mitigate DDOS attacks on static servers?

  Here is a slightly different take on DDOS attacks. Rather than a server with dynamic content being attack i was curious how to deal with attacks on servers with STATIC CONTENT. This means cpu tends to not be an issue. Its either bandwidth or connection problems. How would i mitigate a DDOS attack knowing nothing about the attacker (for example country, ip address or anything else). I was wondering is shorting the timeout and increasing amount of connections is an acceptable solution? Or maybe that is completely useless? Also i would limit the amount of connections per IP address. Would the above help or be pointless? Keeping in mind everything is static checking for multiple request of the same page (html, css, js, etc) could be a sign of a attack. What are some measures i can take on a static content server?

  Hello there, I've been enjoying the benefits of Geo IP lookup from database for some time. Its great. People are increasingly trying to access my site from a mobile phones or 3G modems, and their physical location seems to have little relation to whereabouts my IP lookup tells me they are. A user who is on the east cost of my country, may be looked up as being in the far inland, or up north. And one user may be reported as being in one location in one moment, and seconds later, be 100s of kilometers away. This is becoming a problem, and I need to find a solution. • ping alternative to measure routing distance (on Windows)

  Hello, in order to measure aprroximately the rouitng distance (to see if a server is close to my country or too far away) I usually use ping command. I'm in Italy, when I ping Italian servers I get 36ms when I ping US EAST servers I get an average of 120ms when I ping US WEST servers I get an average of 200ms etc. Unfortunately some web hosters turn off the ping reply on their servers, so my question is how do I detect the routing distance, is there another easy to use command in Windows to accomplish the same task? About books, its sad but many great computer books cannot be bought in my country. So, you can find many articles online, which says how memory was mapped back in pre x386 CPU. How there was explicit holes ready for MMIO BIOS, Video BIOS, etc. How there was A20 line for allowing higher memory access etc. Problem is, time changed. Today BIOSes are many times larger, and pure x86 16bit mode is used for booting and ROM flashing only. OS ignore BIOS as they access everything using drivers. And I just want to know, how it works today. I know not so specific question, but I read OS dev wiki, many articles, but all refering to days before massive usage of pure 32bit CPUs.

• Set preferred language in Chrome and other Google services

  Whenever I'm abroad and access Google's search (via Chrome browser, on my own laptop) or other Google services, they are presented to me in the local language. How can I get Google services displayed in English and instruct Chrome to use google.com (instead of the country-specific site)? My language setting in Windows is English, so Chrome should already use this by default, and I've also set my language preference in iGoogle to English (U.S.), yet if I'm in France, for example, my searches take place on google.fr and sites like the Google News are in French. Chrome tries to be helpful by suggesting to translate these pages for me, but it would be far better to direct to the original English version of these sites in the first place. How do I fix this?
