• What's the best way to transfer a large dataset over a .NET web service?

  I've inherited a C# .NET application which talks to a web service, and the web service talks to an Oracle database. I need to add an export function to the UI, to produce an Excel spreadsheet of some of the data. I have created a web service function to run a database query, load the data into a DataTable and then return it, which works fine for a small number of rows. However there is enough data in the full run that the client application locks up for a few minutes and then returns a timeout error. Obviously this isn't the best way to retrieve such a large dataset. Before I go ahead and come up with some dodgy way of splitting the call, I'm wondering if there is already something in place that can handle this. At the moment I'm thinking of a startExport function then repeatedly calling a next50Rows function until there is no data left, but because web services are stateless this means I'm going to have to keep some sort of ID number around and deal with the associated permissions. It would mean that I don't have to load the entire data set into the web server's memory though, which is one good thing. So if anyone knows a better way to retrieve a large amount of data (in a table format) over a .NET web service, please let me know!

• Inserting variables into a query string - it won't work!

  Basically i have a query string that when i hardcode in the catalogue value its fine. when I try adding it via a variable it just doesn't pick it up. Someone recommended to me that I use .NET "Dictionary" instead of arrays. Now I have never used that before. Can someone show me a relative example of how I am to use .NET Dictionary here?

• Export GridView to Excel (not working)

  I've spent the last two days trying to get some bloody data to export to Excel. After much research I determined that the best and most common way is using HttpResponse headers as shown in my code below. After stepping through countless times in debug mode, I have confirmed that the data is in fact there and both filtered and sorted the way I want it. However, it does not download as an Excel file, or do anything at all for that matter. I suspect this may have something to do with my UpdatePanel or perhaps the ImageButton not posting back properly, but I'm not sure. What am I doing wrong? Please help me to debug this issue. • Gridview looses ItemTemplate after columns are removed

  I'm trying to bind a datatable to a gridview where I've removed some of the autogenerated columns in the code behind. I've got two template columns and it seems that when I alter the gridview in code behind and remove the non-templated columns that the templates loose the controls that are in them. Using the following as a sample, "Header A" will continue to be visible but "Header B" will dissapear after removing any columsn that are located at index 2 and above. I'm creating columns in my codebehind for the grid as a part of a reporting tool. • Loading saved byte array to memory stream causes out of memory exception

  At some point in my program the user selects a bitmap to use as the background image of a Panel object. When the user does this, the program immediately draws the panel with the background image and everything works fine. When the user clicks "Save", the following code saves the bitmap to a DataTable object. MyDataSet.MyDataTableRow myDataRow = MyDataSet.MyDataTableRow.NewMyDataTableRow(); //has a byte[] column named BackgroundImageByteArray using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream()) { this.Panel.BackgroundImage.Save(stream, ImageFormat.Bmp); myDataRow.BackgroundImageByteArray = stream.ToArray(); } Everything works fine, there is no out of memory exception with this stream, even though it contains all the image bytes. However, when the application launches and loads saved data, the following code throws an Out of Memory Exception: using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(myDataRow.BackGroundImageByteArray)) { this.Panel.BackgroundImage = Image.FromStream(stream); } The streams are the same length. I don't understand how one throws an out of memory exception and the other doesn't. How can I load this bitmap? P.S. • When should I implement globalization and localization in C#?

  I am cleaning up some code in a C# app that I wrote and really trying to focus on best practices and coding style. As such, I am running my assembly through FXCop and trying to research each message it gives me to decide what should and shouldn't be changed. What I am currently focusing on are locale settings. For instance, the two errors that I have currently are that I should be specifying the IFormatProvider parameter for Convert.ToString(int), and setting the Dataset and Datatable locale. This is something that I've never done, and never put much thought into. I've always just left that overload out. The current app that I am working on is an internal app for a small company that will very likely never need to run in another country. As such, it is my opinion that I do not need to set these at all. On the other hand, doing so would not be such a big deal, but it seems like it is unneccessary and could hinder readability to a degree. I understand that Microsoft's contention is to use it if it's there, period. Well, I'm technically supposed to call Dispose() on every object that implements IDisposable, but I don't bother doing that with Datasets and Datatables, so I wonder what the practice is "in the wild."

• How can I include DBNull as a value in my strongly typed dataset?

  I've created a strongly typed dataset (MyDataSet) in my .NET app. For the sake of simplicity, we'll say it has one DataTable (MyDataTable), with one column (MyCol). MyCol has its DataType property set to "System.Int32", and its AllowDBNull property set to "true". I'd like to manually create a new row, and add it to this dataset. I create the row without a problem, with something like: MyDataSet.MyDataTableRow myRow = MySimpleDataSet.MyDataTable.NewItemRow(); Fine. However, when I try to set the value to DBNull: myRow.MyCol = DBNull.Value; I'm told that I can't do it...that it can't cast that to an int. This makes sense, in a way, since I've defined it to be an int...but then how can I get DBNull in there? Am I not supposed to be able to have DBNull in there? Isn't that what the AllowDBNull property is for? I'm obviously missing something fundemental. Can someone help explain what it is? EDIT: I also tried entering "int?" as the DataType, but Visual Studio throws an error when I enter it, saying that "Column requires a valid DataType."

Is there any other way to only show every other time label or every 4th one, I read through the docs but could not see how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

• TableLayout formatting loss after device rotation

  I'm seeing a strange issue with a TableLayout after the device is rotated from either orientation. If you load the view in either portrait or landscape mode, the table loads fine. But once you rotate the device, the columns collapse to just fit their width. I would expect that after rotation, the columns would still stretch to fit the width of the screen. Any ideas on what can be done to resolve this? Screenies and layout code below.   I am trying to replace a bunch of strings in files. The strings are stored in a datatable along with the new string value. string contents = File.ReadAllText(file); foreach (DataRow dr in FolderRenames.Rows) { contents = Regex.Replace(contents, dr["find"].ToString(), dr["replace"].ToString()); File.SetAttributes(file, FileAttributes.Normal); File.WriteAllText(file, contents); } The strings look like this _-uUa, -_uU, _-Ha etc. The problem that I am having is when for example this string "_uU" will also overwrite "_-uUa" so the replacement would look like "newvaluea" Is there a way to tell regex to look at the next character after the found string and make sure it is not an alphanumeric character? I hope it is clear what I am trying to do here. Here is some sample data: private function _-0iX(arg1:flash.events.Event):void { if (arg1.type == flash.events.Event.RESIZE) { if (this._-2GU) { this._-yu(this._-2GU); } } return; } The next characters could be ;, (, ), dot, comma, space, :, etc.

  This should be an easy one, looks like I got myself too confused. I get a table from a database, data ranges from varchar to int to Null values. I like the approach that is used here - especially that is trying to solve the same problem that I have, but it crashes on me when I apply it to my case directly.

What is the best way to initialize these classes? Is it better to get all of the parents, and all of the children from database then use LINQ?   I have a data table which has only one row. But it is having 44 columns. My task is to get the columns from the 4th row till the end. Henceforth, I have done the below program that suits my requirement. (kindly note that dt is the datatable) List<decimal> lstDr = new List<decimal>(); Enumerable.Range(0, dt.Columns.Count).ToList().ForEach(i => { if (i > 3) lstDr.Add(Convert.ToDecimal(dt.Rows[0][i])); } ); There is nothing harm in the program. Works fine. But I feel that there may be a better way of handimg the program may be with Skip ot Take or TakeWhile or anyother stuff. I am looking for a better solution that the one I implemented. Is it possible? I am using c#3.0 Thanks.

How to maintain control of your code using Layer Diagrams: Another great blog post by Jennifer Marsman that demonstrates how to setup a “layer diagram” within VS 2010 to enforce clean layering within your applications.  This enables you to enforce a compiler error if someone inadvertently violates a layer design rule. • EPPlus - .xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'

I am basically creating an excel file from a database and sending the results to the response stream using EPPlus(OpenXML). The following code gives me an error when trying to open my generated excel sheet "[report].xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'." It will open fine the first time, but the second time it's locked.
