• How can I visualise a "broken" hierarchical dataset?

  I have a reasonably large datatable structured something like this: StaffNo Grade Direct Boss2 Boss3 Boss4 Boss5 Boss6 ------- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- 10001 1 10002 10002 10057 10094 10043 10099 10002 2 10057 NULL 10057 10094 10043 10099 10003 1 10004 10004 10057 10094 10043 10099 10004 2 10057 NULL 10057 10094 10043 10099 10057 3 10094 NULL NULL 10094 10043 10099 etc.... i.e. a unique id , their level (grade) in the hierarchy, a record of their bosses ID and the IDs of the supervisors above. (The 2,3,4, etc refers to the boss at that particular grade). The system relies on a strict hierarchy - if you are my boss (/parent) then your boss must be my grandparent. Unfortunately this rule is not enforced within the data model and the data ultimately comes from other systems which don't even know about the rule, let alone observe it. So you and I may share the same boss, but our bosses boss won't be the same. note: I cannot change the data model I cannot fix the data at source. So (for the moment) I have to fix the data once it's in place. Once a fortnight someone will do something which breaks the model and I'll need to modify the procs slightly to resolve. Not ideal, but I'm stuck with this for the next six months. Anyway, specific queries are easy to produce but I find it hard to keep track of the bigger picutre. The application which sits on this runs without complaint regardless but navigating around the system becoming extraordinarily confusing. So my question is: Can anyone recommend a tool (or technique) for generating some kind of "broken tree" diagram in this sort of circumstances? I don't want something that will fix things for me, or attempt statistical analysis but at least something that will give a visual indication of how broken it is at any one time. Note : At the moment this is in a SQL Server database but I'm open to ideas utilising C#, Perl or Python.

  I like to find a way to handle multiple updates to a sql db (with one singe db roundtrip). I read about table-valued parameters in SQL Server 2008 http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/TableValueParameters.aspx which seems really useful. But it seems I need to create both a stored procedure and a table type to use it. Is that true? Perhaps due to security? I would like to run a text query simply like this: var sql = "INSERT INTO Note (UserId, note) SELECT * FROM @myDataTable"; var myDataTable = ... some System.Data.DataTable ... var cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand(sql, conn); var param = cmd.Parameters.Add("@myDataTable", System.Data.SqlDbType.Structured); param.Value=myDataTable; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); So A) do I have to create both a stored procedure and a table type to use TVP's? and B) what alternative method is recommended to send multiple updates (and inserts) to SQL Server?

• Andriod Spinner not displaying list items.

  I think I am going crazy right now. I am trying to create a spinner populated by a datatable but for some reason the dropdown list items text is not being displayed. I have looked all over and have seen other posts with people having this same problem. If I select any of them I am getting the correct selected item value but there is just no data displayed.

  I have a C# webservice on a Windows Server that I am interfacing with on a linux server with PHP. The PHP grabs information from the database and then the page offers a "more information" button which then calls the webservice and passes in the name field of the record as a parameter. So i am using a WHERE statement in my query so I only pull the extra fields for that record. I am getting the error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:Invalid column name '42' Where 42 is the value from the name field from the database. my query is string selectStr = "SELECT name, castNotes, triviaNotes FROM tableName WHERE name =\"" + show + "\""; I do not know if it is a problem with my query or something is wrong with the database, but here is the rest of my code for reference. • Getting table schema from a query

  As per MSDN, SqlDataReader.GetSchemaTable returns column metadata for the query executed. I am wondering is there a similar method that will give table metadata for the given query? I mean what tables are involved and what aliases it has got. In my application, I get the query and I need to append the where clause programically. Using GetSchemaTable(), I can get the column metadata and the table it belongs to. But even though table has aliases, it still return the real table name. Is there a way to get the aliase name for that table? • grailsui plugin for accordion not working

  Hi! I have been trying to figure out what's wrong with grailsui accordion. I have checked out the sample source files (http://guidemo.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/) from different ui tags, like menu, datatable and etc. they are working fine but the accordion is not working properly. All i can see is all of the divs shown. the panels are not moving since they are already shown. I've also followed the screencast for it. I've used the yui-skin-sam class name and I've downloaded the grails plugins.grails-ui=1.2-SNAPSHOT. I am not sure what's wrong.I used the rich-ui plugin and it is working great. But there are still features that are not in rich-ui compared to the possible configurations for the grails-ui tags. Anyway. if you have any suggestions to what js library I may use for a grails application or if you have a working grails-ui accordion sample, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Hope you can help me since I am still new to Grails.

• Using JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA: Create Basic WebApp without using Generated CRUD Classes, Forms, etc

  I am trying to build a basic CRUD application with NetBeans 7.4, JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA using MySQL. I have successfully done this by using the NetBeans wizards. I want to do this from scratch, no wizards. There seems to be a lack of support for the combo of JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA. When I say "lack", I mean a full example (I might be asking too much), without using the CRUD auto-gen templates/classes AND shows actual queries coded and passed to the datatables(primefaces). YouTube is full of non-English speaking examples using Hibernate (not JPA) and other examples that show flashy GUI's with no code. So far I understand you need an @Entity class (provides the physical build of the tables), a Controller (serializable) and the .xhtml web page to show the datatable.. what else? Also, I'm not seeing any posts or examples where queries are using with JPA/JSF and how they are tied together (in one place). I need to connect the dots here so that I can leverage JSF/JPA to create simple queries to populate my PF DataTables. I've read the blogs and I've googled the intranets until I'm blue in the face. Sending me a list of URL's to read to learn about each product is something I've already done. I get what they do independently, but am looking for the "How do they all connect" answer with maybe some basic code examples!! :)

• Binding a Button to a GridView

  This a pretty simple question, I'm just not sure how to do it exactly. I would like to bind a Button or perhaps ImageButton to a GridView in ASP.NET/C#. Currently, the GridView has two columns and is bound to a DataTable with two columns. I want to add a third column to the GridView, which will include the Button. I know GridView has ButtonField, but I'm not too sure how to go about using it to do what I want. I want to dynamically generate these Buttons and add them to the GridView.   How can I retrie infromation from delete rows. I delete some rows from table in dataset, then I use method GetChanges(DataRowState.Deleted) to get deleted rows. • MSSQL in ASP.NET application getting unstable after a certain period

  Hello, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 application that I made to keep track of disruption reports about our public transport system. The architecture is pretty straight-forward; an MSSQL Express 2008 database, ADO.NET and a DataSet/DAL with a few methods to access the database. There is a set of .aspx pages for the UI in use by our dispatchers and on our public website, as well as a set of SOAP and REST webservices and an RSS feed. Everything worked just fine for more than a year, until two weeks ago. Now and then, it seems as the database enters an unstable mode, and the application starts responding something right, something wrong. The typical error is that apparently, an empty DataTable is returned to the public disruption overview or to the RSS generator. Thus, the user gets e.g. an empty GridView, but no exception is thrown AFAIK, and nothing is written to the Windows Application log. After a restart of the MSSQL Express service, the situation is back to normal. It has to be said that the situation first time appeared a few days after I made a new minor upgrade of the application. The RSS generator was slightly rewritten, and I added a WCF REST service. But the DAL and the database schema were untouched... Any hints of how we could keep the database stable? It is a bit annoying not to have a clue ;-)

I know how to assign a unique id to the div containing the table, and to the tbody. I can also assign unique class names to the div itself and to the target column.   Hello, I develops a C# Winform application, it is a client and connect to web service to get data. The data returned by webservice is a DataTable. Client will display it on a DataGridView. My problem is that: Client will take more time to get all data from server (web service is not local with client). So I must to use a thread to get data. This is my model: Client create a thread to get data - thread complete and send event to client - client display data on datagridview on a form. However, when user closes the form, user can open this form in another time, and client must get data again. This solution will cause the client slowly. So, I think about a cached data: Client <---get/add/edit/delete--- Cached Data ---get/add/edit/delete---Server (web service) Please give me some suggestions. Example: cached data should be developed in another application which is same host with client? Or cached data is running in client. Please give me some techniques to implement this solution.   Hi: I am using myXmlDataDoc.DataSet.ReadXml(xml_file_name, XmlReadMode.InferSchema); to populate the tables within the dataset created by reading in a xml schema using: myStreamReader = new StreamReader(xsd_file_name); myXmlDataDoc.DataSet.ReadXmlSchema(myStreamReader); The problems I am facing is when it comes to read the xml tag: The readXml function puts the element in a different table and everything in the tables are 0s. Here is the print out of the datatable: TableName: test_data 100 2 1 TableName: parameters 1 0 2 0 3 0 4 0 5 0 6 0 7 0 8 0 9 0 10 0 11 0 12 0 In my xsd file, I represent an array using this: <xs:element name="test_data"> <xs:complexType> <xs:complexContent> <xs:extension base="test_base"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="a" type="xs:unsignedShort"/> <xs:element name="b" type="xs:unsignedShort"/> <xs:element name="c" type="xs:unsignedInt"/> <xs:element name="parameters" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="12" type="xs:unsignedInt"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:extension> </xs:complexContent> </xs:complexType> And here is my xml file: 100 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 I am expecting after the readXml function call, the "parameters" is part of the test_data table. • Fast serarch of 2 dimensional array

  I need a method of quickly searching a large 2 dimensional array. I extract the array from Excel, so 1 dimension represents the rows and the second the columns. I wish to obtain a list of the rows where the columns match certain criteria. I need to know the row number (or index of the array). For example, if I extract a range from excel. I may need to find all rows where column A =”dog” and column B = 7 and column J “a”. I only know which columns and which value to find at run time, so I can’t hard code the column index. I could use a simple loop, but is this efficient ? I need to run it several thousand times, searching for different criteria each time. For r As Integer = 0 To UBound(myArray, 0) - 1 match = True For c = 0 To UBound(myArray, 1) - 1 If not doesValueMeetCriteria(myarray(r,c) then match = False Exit For End If Next If match Then addRowToMatchedRows(r) Next The doesValueMeetCriteria function is a simple function that checks the value of the array element against the query requirement. e.g. Column A = dog etc. Is it more effiecent to create a datatable from the array and use the .select method ? Can I use Linq in some way ? Perhaps some form of dictionary or hashtable ? Or is the simple loop the most effiecent ? Your suggestions are most welcome.

• How to implement a download for dynamic files in asp.net with masterpages

  Hello, the title says it all. I have seen some similar questions on SO like this or this, but either i have overlooked something or my requirement is different, neither works. My situation is following: i have a Masterpage one of its contentpage is called MasterData.aspx MasterData has an asp.net ajax tabcontainer control with one usercontrol in every tabpanel these usercontrols(f.e. MD_Customer.ascx)hold the main content(like a normal page) they all have GridViews in it and i want to provide an Excel-Export-Button What i've tried is is to use an iframe like here. But the function that adds the iframe to the document gets never called and therefore i never see the save-as-dialog. Maybe this is caused by using a MasterPage. Does somebody has an idea on how to provide a button in an UpdatePanel that causes an async postback, so that i can generate a CSV dynamically in codebehind and write it to the response? • HTTP Handler error when downloading files - SSL

  Ok big problem as this is affecting two projects on our new server. We have a file that is downloaded by users, the files are downloaded using a HTTPHandler. Since moving the site to the server and setting SSL the downloads have stopped working and we get an error message "Unable to download DownloadDocument.ashx" from site". DownloadDocument.ashx is the handler page that is set in the web.config and the button that goes there is a hyperlink with the id of the document as a querystring. Ive read the article on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316431 and read a few other requests on this site but nothing seems to be working. • LINQ Joins - Performance

  I am curious on how exactly LINQ (not LINQ to SQL) is performing is joins behind the scenes in relation to how Sql Server performs joins. Sql Server before executing a query, generates an Execution Plan. The Execution Plan is basically an Expression Tree on what it believes is the best way to execute the query. Each node provides information on whether to do a Sort, Scan, Select, Join, ect. On a 'Join' node in our execution plan, we can see three possible algorithms; Hash Join, Merge Join, and Nested Loops Join. Sql Server will choose which algorithm to for each Join operation based on expected number of rows in Inner and Outer tables, what type of join we are doing (some algorithms don't support all types of joins), whether we need data ordered, and probably many other factors. Join Algorithms: Nested Loop Join: Best for small inputs, can be optimized with ordered inner table. Merge Join: Best for medium to large inputs sorted inputs, or an output that needs to be ordered. Hash Join: Best for medium to large inputs, can be parallelized to scale linearly. LINQ Query: DataTable firstTable, secondTable; ... var rows = from firstRow in firstTable.AsEnumerable () join secondRow in secondTable.AsEnumerable () on firstRow.Field<object> (randomObject.Property) equals secondRow.Field<object> (randomObject.Property) select new {firstRow, secondRow}; SQL Query: SELECT * FROM firstTable fT INNER JOIN secondTable sT ON fT.Property = sT.Property Sql Server might use a Nested Loop Join if it knows there are a small number of rows from each table, a merge join if it knows one of the tables has an index, and Hash join if it knows there are a lot of rows on either table and neither has an index.
