• pfSense + DDoS Protection

  I run a gaming community on a colo with a 100Mbps port. I want to buy a very cheap 35 dollar server with the same 100Mbps port, and run pfSense to use as a hardware firewall. I'm dealing with a bunch of 14 year old kids that have access to botnets, so it can become a bit necessary to get something like this. My overall question, is using pfSense on a cheap identical datacenter/port speed server worth it to actually block DDoS attacks? A bit more into detail since I assume you will ask this, the attacks we receive are normally around 1Gbps. We currently run CentOS using CSF Firewall, and even when using a software firewall, we block 500Mbps UDP floods, or just generic attacks pretty easily. Thanks, - Necro

I was at an Interactive Agency, where we needed to keep track of client DB, ftp, mail... and for different environments for the app so any one client would have up to 3-10 passwords usually. • How much should a Systems Administrator be making?

  Hello, I'm a Sys Admin for a small (but successful and growing) company (~60 employees). I've got roughly 5-6 years of actual sys admin experience, plus another 5+ years of lower level work in the industry. I'm responsible for most everything above a helpdesk level in the company (server[windows]/network[cisco]/firewall/SAN[emc] setup/configuration/maintenance/troubleshooting), lead many projects, analyze system data -- I'm sure you've heard it all before...I have a bunch of certs, most are just "nice to have", but the ones that actually apply to my role are CCNA, MSCE, VCP (VMware). If things go wrong, I'm first in line to resolve the issue. I'm not management (no one reports to me). I've seen many of these sorts of questions online before, and I know the typical response is "too many variables, depends on location, industry type" etc etc. I'm just wondering (ballpark) what I should be looking for. I've tried to give as much detail as I can, but if I'm missing something, I'd be glad to post it. Thanks anyone.

• Setting Up Multiple Domains (plus wildcard subdomains) to Point to the Same Site/VirtualHost

  I have my primary domain with wildcard subdomains setup already. username.maindomain.com and maindomain.com I want to provide my users with additional domains that they can select. additional1.com, additional2.com, additional3.com... These additional domains would also need to support wildcard subdomains (as the subdomains route to a username). Anyone know how to properly configure this in DNS and VirtualHost config? Currently I have the additional domains as A records pointing to the same IP as my main domain (with a wildcard subdomain A record for each as well). In my VirtualHost config I am placing the additional domain names in the ServerAlias directive. Let me know if any more detail is needed.

• sudo/su command for Red Hat Server 5.4

  Without going into too much detail, I need to execute one linux command on redhat with root user access. Red Hat Server 5.4 does not recognise the sudo command. The command su can be used to switch to the root user on redhat, but su cannot be done in one line. For example the command: su ; cd opt/storage/RootAccessFolder will not work because this only switches you to root, then executes the cd command once you have logged out from the root user. I guess what i'm looking for is like a.. sudo cd opt/storage/RootAccessFolder but I say again, sudo doesn't work. Any ideas?

• Dual-headed graphics card choice: DVI & VGA with 512MB _or_ DVI & DVI with 256MB

  Which would you choose? Some more detail: I can choose between: A dual-headed card with both heads DVI but only 256MB of memory A dual-headed card with one VGA and one DVI, with 512MB of memory. Both monitors are 1600x1200 I'll be doing mostly business app development on the computer. No gameplay or advanced graphics work. It's running Win7 and is a quad-core i5. I'm thinking of going with 256MB one, just so both displays are DVI and I don't have to shift between sharp & blurry when I look from one screen to the other. But I'm not sure if the additional RAM would be a huge boon for some reason (Win7 GPU acceleration, for example? But with a quad-core, who cares?).

• OpenSSH SFTP server with chroot()

  I am currently setting up an SFTP server but there is one detail I can't seem to figure out. When I add a user, I would like him to connect using his client and be able to write in his "root dir" right away. My Match case for the SFTP-users group currently has ChrootDirectory set as "/home/%u", and inside that directory I have to have a subdirectory owned by the user, while /home/%u itself is owned by root. Next to that, the "root dir" also has a couple files, .bashrc to name one. Is it possible to put these files somewhere else, remove them, or at least make them invisible to the user? Thanks

• Can I get dual monitor support (2xDVI) from my (DVI+HDMI) graphics card?

  It seems that pure 2 x DVI dual head video cards are becoming rare. Most cards feature something like 1 x DVI plus 1 x HDMI plus 1 x VGA or some other interface. The idea seems to be that you can just use an HDMI <= DVI adapter. One result is that cards are seldom marked " 2 x DVI " anymore, but does this mean that they support simultaneous output on all interfaces? Are all cards dual head these days? Take Asus's nVidia cards for example, they routinely have 1 x DVI plus 1 x HDMI instead of 2 x DVI, so my question is, are these equivalent to a dual head DVI card, or is there some detail required for dual monitor support? I use dual-monitor stretched desktops for digital signage projects.

• Can I set up OpenVPN on two or more machines so that they can each act as client and server?

In more detail: I have a Windows XP Pro PC at a work location that I want to be able to access my home Windows XP Pro PC and other home computers from. But I also want to be able to connect to the work PC from home. I think the term generally used is a "mesh" network. Can I do this with OpenVPN ? If so how would I do it? What are the most important things to remember to do? EDIT: The work Windows XP Pro PC is largely managed by IT Dept, I do have local admin rights to install things. Some settings are disabled. My main concern was firewalls and port forwarding on the work PC. Any suggestions?

• Oracle tuning optimizer index cost adj and optimizer index caching

  What is the correct way to set the optimizer index cost adj parameter for Oracle. As a developer I have observed huge performance improvements as this parameter is lowered. Common queries are reduced from 2 seconds to 200ms. There are lots of warnings on the net that lowering this value will cause dire issues with the database, but no detail is given on what will start going wrong. I am currently only seeing only an upside, much improved application performance and no downside. I need to better understand the possible negative repercussions of adjusting these parameters.

• IMAP can't access virtual account sharing name with local user account

  I am setting up a postfix/dovecot mail server with virtual accounts, per the Chris Haas tutorial. I'm finding that virtual users who also have local user accounts on the mail server cannot access their email remotely via IMAP. They're told they cannot login. (I'm using Thunderbird for that). These same users can login when emulating IMAP locally via telnet. Virtual users without local accounts have no trouble with IMAP access from remote clients. These local user accounts have vestiges of prior efforts in their home directories: mbox files, Mail and mail directories. I've looked at the logs for clues to where the remote login process is failing (dovecot authentication failure? confusion over where emails are stored?) but found nothing helpful. I haven't found much in the dovecot or postfix documentation that describes the IMAP login process and expectations in enough detail to help me diagnose this. So: how do I go about identifying the problem and researching a solution?

• .NET Framework 4.0 installation is very slow

  On my Windows Vista, it takes a full 12 minutes to install the .NET Framework 4.0. a) Is this normal? b) If not, can something be done about it? The reason I'm concerned about the speed is because it slows down the testing of our product installer considerably. Testing an installer is time consuming already, but this new .NET Framework installer makes it almost undoable. Detail: I did the test on a clean Vista inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. This setup does not show any performance issues in other situations. I tried both dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe and dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe. They both take approximately the same time to install.

• Windows Explorer view style via GPO or registry edit

  I'm having some difficulty adjusting the default view style in windows explorer (e.g. list, detail, large icon, small icon). There does not seem to be any pre-baked GPOs for this and next to no documentation on the subject outside of using GUI configuration tools built into windows explorer. Does anyone know the specific registry keys that need to be edited for this? I've already taken a look at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Settings but the adjustments I've made there don't seem to make any change on their own.

• Are there any problems migrating users from OSX 10.4.11 server to 10.6.6. server using WGM?

  I have just set up a new Mac server running 10.6.6. Installation went smoothly and all appears ok. Can create a new user through WGM and logon to the server from one of our local client systems. Imported the old users from the 10.4 system using WGM but the new system will not create home directories for these users and will not let them log on. I have read that there are issues using this method but can not find any detail as to why. Not wishing to recreate over 350 users from scratch I am looking for an easier solution. Can anyone help? The new server is 10.6.6. We use Open Directory and AFP. The paths are the same as the old server.

• Why does outlook 2013, after initial setup, always fail to connect to an Exchange server/always ask for a password?

  After installing Outlook 2013 configuring it to connect to an exchange server (details about which, e.g., version, etc., I do not know how to provide) was stressful and the user used outlook without issue for a session. The next time outlook is started this error (Re. subject) occurs. The answer to this question solves the issue, or explains why it is happening (i.e., no one could provide a solution). It is only after outlook is closed and re-opened that it will not connect again to the server.   We have on the company I work for an application built in Delphi V with Crystal Reports 8. We all know that Crystal & Delphi can be temperamental sometimes and the worst thing is, nearly no detail on the error. Also there is a big lack of documentation on the web about this. There's lot of people with similar issue but no solution. The error I'm talking about in particular is the one on the image below. This happens when trying to print any Crystal Reports on screen. This has happened sometimes in the clients computer and it was hard for us to replicate on our environment. Since it's an old version of Crystal it is very hard to find any helpful documentation to know the exact source of the problem.

• How do you confirm network adapter is gigabit capable?

  Upgrading my network to gigabit speeds and don't know how to determine if the NIC in one of the systems is capable of gigabit speed. The documentation from the manufacturer states this: Network adapter 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN on system board However when I go to the properties of the NIC under Speed & Duplex my only options are: 10 Mb Full 10 Mb Half 100 Mb Full 100 Mb Half Auto Is there a command line I can run that will give me more detail about the NIC? Windows 7 x64 OS New Info: The new switch I just bought has a light to indicate 1000Mbps. I can tell from the light that this NIC is indeed negotiating at 1000Mbps but I'd still like to know how to determine this from the console in windows.

• Bootstrapping in CloudFormation with Autoscale

  My CloudFormation template creates an autoscale group and bootstrap it with utility script /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init. When I remove the bootstrap part out of my template the, autoscale get created without any problem, but I add it the CloudFormation Stack fails and add line in /var/log/cloud-init.log : Error: AutoScalingGroupName does not specify any metadata The line above appens right after the following command : /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init --verbose --configsets orderedConfig --region us-east-1 --stack AS15 --resource AutoScalingGroupName --access-key XXXXXXXXXXXXX --secret-key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Digging a little bit deeper, in cfn-init I added the following lines the point where it exit: from pprint import pprint pprint(vars(detail)) and I get the following trace when running the previous cfn-init command : {'_description': None, '_lastUpdated': datetime.datetime(2012, 7, 12, 14, 52, 42), '_logicalResourceId': u'AutoScalingGroupName', '_metadata': None, '_physicalResourceId': u'AS15-AutoScalingGroupName-HNPOXXXXXXXX', '_resourceStatus': u'CREATE_COMPLETE', '_resourceStatusReason': None, '_resourceType': u'AWS::AutoScaling::AutoScalingGroup', '_stackId': u'arn:aws:cloudformation:us-east-1:XXXXXXXXXXXXX:stack/AS15/XXXXXXXX-cc30-11e1-XXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX', '_stackName': u'AS15'} As you can see, the metadata field is empty and that's the reason why it fails to create the stack.   I realize similar questions were asked/answered on this, but I have a subtle detail to which I can not find answers anywhere. Let's exemplify with the following DNS entries: foo.example.com A 1.1.1.1 bar.example.com A 1.1.1.2 wee.example.com CNAME foo.example.com foo.example.com MX foo.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com bar.example.com MX bar.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com Note the last line. My institution has that kind of MX records, where for each MX record the value has the label prepended. Question 1 is, what is the motivation for this (why not just s9a1.psmtp.com)? Question 2 is more subtle and follows.. My understanding is that an MX record should not contain any aliases for neither label nor the value, i.e. the following would be bad practice: wee.example.com MX wee.example.com.s9a1.psmtp.com Then, how should the RRs look for the alias wee.example.com? • How can email possibly be routed to the right place with no to: address?

  I'm no novice on networking technology, but one thing I don't really know much about in detail is email and headers. How does email work SPECIFICALLY? I'm getting spam in my hotmail inbox when I've made painful attempts to not give out my actual email. I use my own domain name to forward email to my inbox using several aliases. Yet now I'm getting spam with no address in the to: line, or also "undisclosed recipients". Looking at the headers is of no help whatsoever. So from a technical standpoint, I have to wonder... if I send an email to a certain address in my personal domain and it gets forwarded to my hotmail account, how does hotmail know what inbox to dump the message in if that address is not listed in the headers?

• How to create iso dvd image for use with Mac OS X's "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail: how to do this what the options mean e.g. format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non Mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard DVD as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'Terminal' (the whole point of buying a Mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

• Suspended Laptop Cannot Wake Up - Ubuntu

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue?

• Do I make the correct difference between spwan-cgi and mod_fcgi

  First of all im configuring an webserver with nginx and apache2 working together. Having only nginx is no options for me, neither is lighttdp. I am reading a tutorial 'Nginx -Apache -Proxy configuration on Centos-Plesk server' where this is exaplained in some detail. One thing i don't really understand. They are talking about installing spawn-fcgi to spawn the fastcgi process. Now if i understand this correct this program is only for nginx apache will run as normal. Apache will just run the mod_php5.c. If i want to have apache also work as fastcgi i have to confirgure that seperately, and let apache use mod_fcgi. Do I have this correct or am I talking utter nonsense. Nginx usses spawn-cgi as frontend Apache usses mod_fcgi in the back Inbetween there is a proxy that ports port 80(nginx) to port 8080(apache)
