• Automate configuration change on Outlook 2007

  I am migrating a bunch of mailboxes to google apps. Each user owns several mailboxes each serving different domains (john has [email protected], [email protected], and so on...) Currently, those accounts are hosted on (edit:NOT an exchange server) an old SMTP/POP server we want to replace, and I need to edit their outlook 2007 configuration to change the pop, smtp and password parameters. The hard way to do it is to connect to each outlook session and edit the parameters manually. I want to avoid that. Because that represents over 700 accounts spread between 40 users... :'( How can I automate this configuration change ? In the active directory ? Using a PRF file ? note: I'm a linux sysadmin with very little knowledge of windows's black magic.

• Change a Foreign Action's Display Text

  I want the display text on an Action on a Node to show something about the underlying object. But the Action is registered somewhere in the layer (i.e., in the registry), i.e., I have no control over it. How do I change the display text in this scenario? Here's how.   A portion of my job is to maintain technical documentation for a rapidly expanding manufacturing company. Because it is only a portion of my job and the company's product line is expanding so quickly, I can't stay on top of the documentation. As a result, I've been yearning for an information management system with a handful of specific features. I've found many products that have a subset, but none that have all the features I'm looking for. I'm at the point of picking an existing product and expanding it to cover my desired feature set, however, this will be a pet project and I will be learning the underlying language as I go. • How can I add a custom item to the Sound Indicator (and make it clickable more than once)?

  The original question One of the strength of Unity are the various standardized indicators. I want to customize the sound indicator with an additional menu entry that runs a small shell script. I'm not afraid of a little Python code and I hope someone can point me to the right subroutine in the right file. I suspect that will be fairly easy but all the indicators are just so bloated that I can't look through their code in a reasonable time. Any help is appreciated. I know it is possible as the marvelous Skype-Wrapper does it. Edit 2 - Now a dirty DBus hack The one click problem from one edit before has now turned into a DBus problem. Basically we have to tell the sound indicator that our bogus player has terminated now. • Setting up dual monitors, Xorg.conf issues

  I just got a new computer (W520, Graphics card nVidia GF106 [Quadro 2000]) and installed ubuntu on it using wubi. I have everything working, so I wanted to set it up to be able to use two monitors with an extended screen. I figured I had to edit Xorg.conf, but the file didnt exist. So I tried to create it by booting in recovery mode, and executing Xorg -configure but I am getting these errors: (EE) Failed to load module "vmwgfx" (module does not exist, 0) (EE) vmware: Please ignore the above warnings about not being able to load module/driver vmwgfx (++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new" (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" (EE) [drm] No DRICreatedPCIBusID symbol Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log Any idea how I can get Xorg -configure to work, so that I can have an xorg.conf file that I can edit to enable twinview? EDIT: Another way I could ask the same question to solve this problem is, why can't I boot with an xorg.conf file generated by nvidia-xconfig? Is there something in the generated xorg.conf file that might need editing?

• Which file format to use for simple video editoring

  I've just bought a Sanyo VPC-CG10 camcorder which saves clips as MPEG-4 (specifically, High-Definition 720p MPEG-4 AVC/H.246) I want a simple, cheap way to edit the clips and as, I'm using Windows Vista, I though Windows Movie Maker would be a good choice. But you can't import mp4 files into Windows Movie Maker. I've tried various codecs, but I'm not sure what is the best format to convert to, so that I can edit the files in Windows Movie Maker. AVI, MPG, WMI... I'm not sure what format is best. Should I try to keep the movie clips in MPEG-4 and edit them in that format (and then which editor do I use?) or is there a better format that I should convert to before editing (and what format is that?) ?

• Media center consumes all available memory when attempting to play music off of a server

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and recently, when i try to play a song off of my Twonky Media Server/Windows Media Connect (based on an HP WHS with an Atom), it plays choppily. When i open Resource Monitor, it shows that after ordering the music to play, memory usage rapidly spikes to consume most, if not all, of the available memory on my system (excluding a couple hundred megabytes in standby). Why does it do this and is there anything i can do to stop it? Edit: it happens when I attempt to browse the server's music, not just when i play music. Edit 2: the "ehshell" process is what consumes the memory, appears to me something specific to media center. Moreover, the ehshell process doesn't die in this case. Edit 3: It only happens when browsing my Twonky library, and not my Windows Media Connect.

• How to diagnose Ubuntu CPU spikes / IO wait?

  I'm using Ubuntu and every couple minutes it goes unresponsive for a half second to a full second, which isn't normally a problem but makes trying to code extremely frustrating when your trying to hit backspace or navigate the code and nothing is happening. The problem is, the freezes are so brief that top doesn't have time to show me what is spiking the CPU (assuming something is, but I don't know what else could cause this). Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this performance issue? Edit: I've tried login in with Gnome Classic (No Effects) instead of Unity but it still freezes up every once in awhile. Edit: The CPU graph doesn't seem to be showing any actual spikes so it seems you were right and my original diagnosis of CPU spikes being the problem was incorrect, I now suspect IO wait. I don't recall this happening for the brief few weeks I had Windows 7 Starter running on it though, which leads me to believe it isn't (just?) the hardware.. is there anything I can tweak to improve this? • FTP script download from linux to windows

  I'm using following FTP script on windows xp to download zip files from ubuntu cloud servers. A zip file is created every day on ubutnu servers and I will download it to windows via this ftp script. I run this script everyday manually as I have to edit the last line(mget /usr/backup_02-11-2010.Zip) of the script to match today's date. I want to edit this script so that it will download only today's zip file at the scheduled time without needing to edit it everyday, when scheduled. It's clear that date is appended to the zip files and is in the format dd-mm-yyyy. • Google Apps for Mail - MX entry related doubt

  I have signed up for google apps recently for my organisation. The google apps guide says that I need to edit the MX entry for my domain so that the mails get redirected to the google mail servers instead of my default mail server. But, I am having a doubt whether to edit the MX entry on my domain name provider or the hosting server. My domain name provider is godaddy.com and my server is ServInt. And, moreover, what difference does it make if I edit the MX entries on my hosting provider or my domain name provider. Thanks, niting

• Conflict resolution for two-way sync

  How do you manage two-way synchronization between a 'main' database server and many 'secondary' servers, in particular conflict resolution, assuming a connection is not always available? For example, I have an mobile app that uses CoreData as the 'database' on the iOS and I'd like to allow users to edit the contents without Internet connection. In the same time, this information is available on a website the devices will connect to. What do I do if/when the data on the two DB servers is in conflict? (I refer to CoreData as a DB server, though I am aware it is something slightly different.) Are there any general strategies for dealing with this sort of issue? These are the options I can think of: 1. Always use the client-side data as higher-priority 2. Same for server-side 3. Try to resolve conflicts by marking each field's edit timestamp and taking the latest edit Though I'm certain the 3rd option will open room for some devastating data corruption. I'm aware that the CAP theorem concerns this, but I only want eventual consistency, so it doesn't rule it out completely, right? Related question: Best practice patterns for two-way data synchronization. The second answer to this question says it probably can't be done.

  Using Firebug to edit CSS, how do I save/export changes made to the CSS? TOOLS: Firefox, Firebug MAJOR UPDATE: If you know of a way to lock the forward/back/refresh on a FireFox tab, please let me know. Otherwise, I've given up on using FireBug/FireDiff as an IDE for CSS, it's nice, but lol... press backspace at the wrong time and ALL your work is gone... funny. So, really like the browser highlighting to CSS/HTML in Firebug. Know any good CSS editors that do this? Really had hope FireBug would work, but for now only see it as being good for ad-hoc inspection and test; meaning using it for what it's made for. UPDATES: @Lèse majesté: Just as an update, "Web Developer add-on" does let you edit CSS, but it does not let you edit/save CSS changes made by Firebug. Meaning you use Firebug to ID and maybe test changes, but it does not let you save the changes from Firebug. Here's a "how to" covering how to use them together: FF + FB + WD @Lèse majesté: Still playing around with FireDiff. It works okay, found one bug already (although I'm just working around it), and there's no "how to" I've been able to find, so I'm just trying every feature and clicking around... (for example, to export a diff you must be over the last item in the list, right click, and select as "Save Diff". The ".diff" is just a text file, no idea why at this point the ext is .diff.

• Finding Buried Controls

  This post is pretty specific to an issue I had but still has some ideas that could be applied in other scenarios. The problem I had was updating a few buttons so their Text values could be set in the code behind which had a method to grab the proper value from an external source. This was so that if the application needed to be installed by a customer using a language other than English or needed a different notation for the button's Text they could simply update the database. Most of the time this was no big deal. However I had one instance where the button was part of a control, the button had no set ID and that control was only found in a dll. So there was no markup to edit for the Button. Also updating the dll was not an option so I had to make the best of what I had to work with. In the cs file for the aspx file with the control on it I added the Page_LoadComplete. The problem button was within a GridView so I added a foreach to go through each GridViewRow and find the button I needed. Since I did not have an ID to work with besides a random ctl00$main$DllControl$gvStuff$ctl03$ctl05 using the GridView's FindControl was out. I ended up looping through each GridViewRow, then if a RowState equaled Edit loop through the Cells, each control in the Cell and check each control to see if it held a Panel that contained the button. • Restricting permissions to individual documents on SharePoint

  Here's what I'm trying to do: I would like to create a list of documents on a site in my company's SharePoint site. Each document should have specific user's permissions to view and edit it. For example: The list is for performance reports. John has his out there called "John_PR_09.docx". Only him and his supervisor should have permissions to view, edit, or do anything to it. And then another employee has hers out there with permissions for only her and her supervisor, and so on... I have tested this out with a document that I removed the groups and users from (since they inherit permissions from it's parent) and only gave my user account permissions to. I then asked someone else to try and open and she could, she even wrote "TEST" on the document and saved it. What am I doing wrong? I thought I stopped it from inheriting permissions from it's parent and only gave myself rights to edit it.

In the view page, I load the CustomerOrder "create" form in using: <div id="CustomerOrderCreate"> @Html.Partial("Vendor/_CustomerOrderCreatePartial", Model.CustomerOrderCreateViewModel) </div> The CustomerOrder html form action posts to a different controller HttpPost ActionResult than the Customer "edit" Action Result. My concern is this, on the CustomerOrder controller, in the HttpPost ActionResult [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(CustomerOrderCreateViewModel vm) { if (!ModelState.IsValid) { return [What Do I Return Here] } ...[Persist to database code]... } I don't know what to return if the model state isn't valid. Right now it's not a problem, because jquery unobtrusive validation handles validation on the client. But what if I need more complex validation (ie: the server needs to handle the validation).

• Randomly Freezes - How Can I Diagnose the Problem?

  At random times, Ubuntu 10.04 freezes, and I have to do a hard shutdown. It was upgraded from 9.10 which didn't freeze. First, is this is common problem with a quick answer, and if not, what can I do to diagnose it? I've tried checking application/kernel logs, but nothing gives me a clue as to what caused the problem. My guess, is that since the OS froze, no logs could be updated. Ideas? SOLUTION: Solved it. My particular problem was my graphics card (integrated Radeon 9000 series). netconsole revealed I was getting the error: "reserve failed for wait". After trial-and-error, I manually configured my video card and disabled hardware acceleration. Completely fixed the issue. Here is what I did: Manually Created xorg.conf Ubuntu automatically configures xorg.conf and doesn't use a file. To edit this file, you have to tell Ubuntu to explicitly create one and then edit it. Here are the steps: Restart system Hold Shift as GRUB boots Select root terminal in GRUB login menu Execute: X -config xorg.conf.new Copy: cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf Disable Hardware Acceleration The following is specific to my Radeon card, but I'm sure other cards have a similar setup. Edit xorg.conf Find "Device" section for graphics card Uncomment "NoAccel" option and set to "True" Save + reboot Hope that helps.

• Do I expect too much work from an employer? [closed]

  I recently switched jobs because I was not challenged enough, the work would come in waves, and I HATED the people I worked with. I am a recent college grad, May 2009, and based off the 3 internships I had, and 2 full time jobs I obtained, I am finding that employers can not keep me satisfied with the amount of work. At my new job, I like the people I work with, I am challenged, but I still do not get enough work. I hate down time. I always want to have something to work on AT LEAST 6 out of the 8 hours. I was surprised that my new employer actually hired me because the majority of the technologies they implement, I had minimal exposure to. I never programmed in the technologies they use outside of one class in college. My greatest strength is that I am an extremely fast learner. I can pick up new technologies with relative ease. They gave me a project to work on by myself and I think they assumed it would take me longer to complete. Now that I finished that app, they are struggling to find something for me to do. I am not sure if it is bad timing being close to the holidays, my manager dealing with personal issues at home, how quickly I finished the first project, or that I expect too much out of an employer? If so, what are good things to do on all this downtime?! EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! EDIT 2: I am going to "unaccept" the answer in an effort to keep the question open. As a few people have mentioned, this is a great discussion on how to grow as a new worker in the programming field. • Accessing VMware Player across the network

  My network: 192.168.2.2 (computer) 255.255.255.0 (mask) 192.168.2.254 (gateway) The VMplayer is: 192.168.233.129 (ip) 255.255.255.0 (mask) 192.168.233.255(bcast) It's obvious the player can't be access from other systems because of the wrong network settings. However, I am not sure as to how to change that. Obviously I have to edit the ifcg-eth0 but I know I also need to edit it on the host system to make it accessably. Is this done from inside VMware Player? Or do I need to edit the network devices? The host box is Windows. Inside VMware is Linux.

  I'm trying to setup folder access to a group so that all members of that group can create/edit/delete files within the folder. # create my group and add a member sudo addgroup dev sudo adduser martyn dev Now, logged in as "martyn", check my user has been added to "dev" group groups martyn martyn : martyn dev Now I want to change the group ownership of my project folder so all members of that group can edit it and files/folders within it. sudo chgrp -R dev myproject Just to check: martyn@localhost:/var/www$ ls -l total 4 drwxrwxr-x 3 dev dev 4096 May 31 15:53 myproject Now here's where it fails. I want to create a file within myproject (logged in as "martyn", a member of "dev"): vi myproject/test ..but when I try to save the file I get the following error: "myproject/test" E212: Can't open file for writing Why, as user "martyn" which is a member of "dev", can I not write this file? Even if I create the file so it exists, change the ownership to "dev" then try to edit and save - I get the same error.

• Is it reasonable to require passwords when users sign into my application through social media accounts?

  I've built an application that requires users to authenticate with one or more social media accounts from either Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Edit Once the user has signed in, an 'identity' for them is maintained in the system, to which all content they create is associated. A user can associate one account from each of the supported providers with this identity. I'm concerned about how to protect potential users from connecting the wrong account to their identity in our application. /Edit There are two main scenarios that could happen: User has multiple accounts on one of the three providers, and is not logged into the one s/he desires. User comes to a public or shared computer, in which the previous user left themselves logged into one of the three providers. While I haven't encountered many examples of this myself, I'm considering requiring users to password authenticate with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn whenever they are signing into our application. Is that a reasonable approach, or are there reasons why many other sites and applications don't challenge users to provide a user name and password when authorizing applications to access their social media accounts? Thanks in advance! Edit A clarification, I'm not intending to store anyone's user name and password. Rather, when a user clicks the button to sign in, with Facebook as an example, I'm considering showing an "Is this you?" type window. The idea is that a user would respond to the challenge by either signing into Facebook on the account fetched from the oauth hash, or would sign into the correct account and the oauth callback would run with the new oauth hash data.

• Grub menu not waiting despite of GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed along side of windows 7. The grub menu doesn't seem obey GRUB_TIMEOUT=10, I see the grub menu there for a split second and it immediately defaults to the first option. Grub menu worked fine when I first installed ubuntu. I am not able to pinpoint what exactly broke it(maybe some update?). I did resize my ubuntu partition using gparted but am not sure if that is what caused it. here are my settings from etc/default/grub GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" How do I fix this? • Editing files on linux server from windows

  I want to edit text files on Linux server from Windows, using text editor like Notepad++ or UltraEdit. I've managed to do so using WinSCP. It can edit files remotely and offers me to choose local application to open those files. That is exactly what I need, but when I hit ctrl-s (not every time, in about 50% cases), it waits for around 10 seconds, alerts that connection has failed, and offers me to "abort". When I click abort, it instantly reconnect and save file. So does anybody knows any other way to edit files remotely without this annoying waiting period.

• Live HTML Preview

  When you need to edit an HTML document in NetBeans you may find useful this little plugin that adds a Preview tab to HTML editor window. The plugin works with some small issues in NetBeans 7.4 but I recommend using development builds instead. So install the plugin, restart NetBeans and open any HTML document. Notice there's a Preview button in editor's toolbar (see the red rectangle in the picture below). Now split the editor window by dragging the split button at top right corner. You can also use menu View - Split - Vertically.  Then in the bottom split part toggle Preview button. You will get a live preview of your HTML source code. The preview pane will auto-refresh as you edit the HTML code. There are even some handy tools in Preview toolbar, for example you can resize the preview browser to match the screen dimensions of various device types. I know there is full-blown HTML5 support in NetBeans 7.4. But if you need to edit a single document or when you're running Java-only NetBeans distribution this plugin may come handy... Note: The plugin is built on top of embedded WebKit browser which is based on JavaFX WebView component. So there might be some issue when using the plugin on some flavors of Linux.
