  • Does variable = null set it for garbage collection

    - by manyxcxi
Help me settle a dispute with a coworker: Does setting a variable or collection to null in Java aid in garbage collection and reducing memory usage? If I have a long running program and each function may be iteratively called (potentially thousands of times): Does setting all the variables in it to null before returning a value to the parent function help reduce heap size/memory usage?

  • Free JVM profilers for websites

    - by 2Real
I'm looking for a JVM profiler (preferably open source) so I can look at the heap and cpu usage of my personal website. I've used Lambda Probe, and I like it because it provides a web interface for my remote Unix computer that has no display. I was wondering what else is available Thanks,

  • How many registers in custom VM?

    - by DeadMG
I'm designing a custom VM and am curious about how many registers I should use. Initially, I had 255, but I'm a little concerned about backing 255 pointers (a whole KB) on to the stack or heap every time I call a function, when most of them won't even be used. How many registers should I use?

  • some qeustions about Vector in STL

    - by skydoor
I have some questions about vector in STL to clarify..... 1 Where are the objects in vector allocated? heap? 2 does vector have boundary check? If the index out of the boundary, what error will happen? 3 Why array is faster than vector? 4 Is there any case in which vector is not applicable but array is a must?

  • How to install VMWare ESXi CLI on CentOS 6.0?

    - by weekens
I'm trying to install VMware-vSphere-CLI-5.0.0-422456.x86_64 onto CentOS 6.0 64bit, but the installer complains: CPAN not able to install following Perl modules on the system. These must be installed manually for use by vSphere CLI: UUID 0.03 or newer I tried to do sudo yum install uuid-perl and also sudo yum install perl-SOAP-Lite perl-Data-Dump perl-Class-MethodMaker perl-Crypt-SSLeay perl-libxml-perl perl-XML-LibXML-Common but this doesn't help. What else can I try to do?

  • C++ segmentation error when first parameter is null in comparison operator overload

    - by user1774515
I am writing a class called Word, that handles a c string and overloads the <, , <=, = operators. word.h: friend bool operator<(const Word &a, const Word &b); word.cc: bool operator<(const Word &a, const Word &b) { if(a == NULL && b == NULL) return false; if(a == NULL) return true; if(b == NULL) return false; return a.wd < b.wd; //wd is a valid c string } main: char* temp = NULL; //EDIT: i was mistaken, temp is a char pointer Word a("blah"); //a.wd = [b,l,a,h] cout << (temp<a); i get a segmentation error before the first line of the operator< method after the last line in the main. I can correct the problem by writing cout << (a>temp); where the operator> is similarly defined and i get no errors. but my assignment requires (temp < a) to work so this is where i ask for help. EDIT: i made a mistake the first time and i said temp was of type Word, but it is actually of type char*. so i assume that the compiler converts temp to a Word using one of my constructors. i dont know which one it would use and why this would work since the first parameter is not Word. here is the constructor i think is being used to make the Word using temp: Word::Word(char* c, char* delimeters=NULL) { char *temporary = "\0"; if(c == NULL) c = temporary; check(stoppers!=NULL, "(Word(char*,char*))NULL pointer"); //exits the program if the expression is false if(strlen(c) == 0) size = DEFAULT_SIZE; //10 else size = strlen(c) + 1 + DEFAULT_SIZE; wd = new char[size]; check(wd!=NULL, "Word(char*,char*))heap overflow"); delimiters = new char[strlen(stoppers) + 1]; //EDIT: changed to [] check(delimiters!=NULL,"Word(char*,char*))heap overflow"); strcpy(wd,c); strcpy(delimiters, stoppers); count = strlen(wd); } wd is of type char* thanks for looking at this big question and trying to help. let me know if you need more code to look at

  • Question regarding the method local innerclasses accesing the local variables of the method

    - by flash
Hi I was going through the SCJP book about the innerclasses, and found this statement, it goes something like this. "A method local class can only refer to the local variables which are marked final" and in the explanation the reason specified is about the scope and lifetime of the local class object and the local variables on the heap, But I am unable to understand that.am I missing anything here about 'final'??

  • .NET object creation and generations

    - by nimoraca
Is there a way to tell the .NET to allocate a new object in generation 2 heap. I have a problem where I need to allocate approximately 200 MB of objects, do something with them, and throw them away. What happens here is that all the data gets copied two times (from gen0 to gen1 and then from gen1 to gen2).

  • Using operator+ without leaking memory?

    - by xokmzxoo
So the code in question is this: const String String::operator+ (const String& rhs) { String tmp; tmp.Set(this->mString); tmp.Append(rhs.mString); return tmp; } This of course places the String on the stack and it gets removed and returns garbage. And placing it on the heap would leak memory. So how should I do this?

To help support and anyone who may use one of my applications I tend to log a few things during the application startup. Currently I log: Start Time App Name App Author App Version App Classpath Current working directory Java vendor Java version Max heap size Taking into consideration this application may be used / supported by a whole host of people can anyone think of any other vital details which we / others should log for good practice?

    - by user1730833
I have a file whose size is about 300mb i want to read the contents line by line and then add it into arraylist. So i have made an object of array list a1 , then reading the file using bufferedreader , after that when i add the lines from file into arraylist it gives an error Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. Please tell me what should be the solution for this.

  • Java GC: top object classes promoted (by size)?

    - by Java Geek
Hello! Please let me know what is the best way to determine composition of young generation memory promoted to old generation, after each young GC event? Ideally I would like to know class names which are responsible say, for 80% of heap in each "young gen - old gen" promotion chunk; Example: I have 600M young gen, each tenure promotes 6M; I want to know which objects compose this 6M. Thank you.

  • Where does Firefox store the opened windows/tabs/urls for Session Restore after a crash?

    - by jens
In which location and file does Firefox save the last windows I had opened (when Firefox crashed)? I have a complete "hot dump" copy of a file system and need to restore the state Firefox was when the system crashed, but I cannot restore the full backup itself. I can only extract the files of Firefox, but I do not know in which files I have to search for the urls that were last opened when the snapshot of the whole file system was done.

  • Does anyone know of a good guide to configure GC in Java?

    - by evilpenguin
I'm having trouble with a JVM running an app, whose heap memory looks like a comb. It's constantly jumping from 1.5 GB to 3 GB and slowly deteriorating to higher values. I'm using G1 GC algorithm, but have no idea how to configure it. I do not have access to the code of the app I'm running and, needless to say, it's a rather large app. So, bottom line, does anyone know of a good guide to configure GC in Java?

  • Viewing large XML files in eclipse?

    - by Paul Wicks
I'm working on a project involving some large XML files (from 50MB to over 1GB) and it would be nice if I could view them in eclipse (simple text view is fine) without Java running out of heap space. I've tried tweaking the amount of memory available to the jvm in eclipse.ini but haven't had much success. Any ideas?

  • C#. Where struct methods code kept in memory?

    - by maxima120
It is somewhat known where .NET keeps value types in memory (mostly in stack but could be in heap in certain circumstances etc)... My question is - where is the code of the struct? If I have say 16 byte of data fields in the struct and a massive computation method in it - I am presuming that 16 byte will be copied in stack and the method code is stored somewhere else and is shared for all instances of the struct. Are these presumptions correct?

  • Would the instance reference parameters passed into the static methods get garbage collected?

    - by 123Developer
I know that the static objects in .Net managed world are loaded in Loader Heap which is never going to be garbage collected. What happens to the instance reference parameters passed to a static methods. Are they get garbage collected once the static function executed completely Or they are going to live forever as those instance reference variables are once passed to static method? I am really confused this evening; Please guide me. Thanks and regards 123Developer.

  • JavaScript: How can I determine what objects are being collected by the garbage collector?

    - by shino
I have significant garbage collection pauses. I'd like to pinpoint the objects most responsible for this collection before I try to fix the problem. I've looked at the heap snapshot on Chrome, but (correct me if I am wrong) I cannot seem to find any indicator of what is being collected, only what is taking up the most memory. Is there a way to answer this empirically, or am I limited to educated guesses?

  • find the top K most frequent numbers in a data stream

    - by Jin
This is more of a data structure question rather than a coding question. If I am fetching a data stream, i.e, I keep receiving float numbers once at a time, how should I keep track of the top K frequent numbers? Here my memory is 4G and I prefer to have less communication with hard drive unless necessary. I think heap is good for updating the max and min. How should I design the data structure? Thanks

  • Appverifier and Visual Studio for leak detection

    - by Patito
Hi, I'm running Appverifier in an application. When it detects a memory leaks the logs saids "Address of the leaked allocation. Run !heap -p -a to get additional information about the allocation." I guess that's when you are running in Windbg, is there any way to access the allocation stack trace from inside Visual Studio ?
