• Feedback from SQLBits 8

  This years SQLBits occurred in Brighton. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to attend the full conference, I did a presentation at Saturday. Getting to Brighton was easy. Drove to Copenhagen airport at 0415, flew 0605 and arrived at Gatwick 0735. Then I took the direct train to Brighton and showed up at 0830, just one hour before presenting. This was the easy part. Getting home was much worse. Presentation ended at 1030 and I had to rush to the train station to get back to London, change to tube for Heathrow. Made it at the gate just 15 seconds before closing. That included a half mile run in the airport… Anyway, yesterday I got the feedback for my presentation. It does look good, especially since English is not my first language. This is the first graph Seems to be just halfway between conference average and best session. I can live with that. Second graph shows more detail about attendees voting. It also look acceptable. A wider spread for the 9’s, but it is an inevitable effect from how attendees percept the session. I did get a lot of 8’s and the lower grades in an descending order. The two people voting 4 and 5 didn’t say why they voted this so I don’t know how to remedy this. Third graph is about each category of votes.   Again, I find this acceptable. The Session abstract and Speaker’s knowledge seems to follow attendees expectations compared to conference average. I seem to have met the attendees expectations (and some more) for the other four categories, also compared to conference average. Since this did encourage me, I believe I will present some more at future meetings. I do have a new presentation about something all developers are doing every day but they may not know it. I will also cover this new topic in the next Deep Dives II book. Stay tuned! //Peter

• All hail the Excel Queen

  An excellent question this past week from dear ol Blighty; actually from Brian at Nextgen Clearing Ltd in the big smoke (London). Brian was developing an excel template and wanted to be able to reference the data fields multiple times inside the Excel template. Damn good question and I of course has some wacky solutions, from macros and cell referencing in Excel to pre-processing the data with an XSL stylesheet to copy the data multiple times so it could be referenced multiple times. All completely outlandish, enter our Queen of Excel, Shirley from the development team. Shirley is singlehandedly responsible for the Excel templates, I put her through six months of hell a few years back, with a host of Excel template requirements. She was more than up to the challenge and has developed some great features. One of those, is the ability to use the hidden XDO_METADATA sheet to map the data to custom named fields so they can be used multiple times in the template. So simple and very neat! Excel template and regular Excel users will know that you can only use the naming function once ie the names have to be unique across the workbook so you can not reuse a cell/group name. To get around this you can just come up with as many cell names as you want and map them in the XDO_METADATA sheet to the data columns/fields in your XML data set:. For example: XDO_?DEPTNO_SUMMARY?  <?DEPTNO?> XDO_?DNAME_SUMMARY?  <?DNAME?> XDO_GROUP_?G_D_DETAIL? <xsl:for-each-group select=".//G_D" group-by="./DEPTNO"> XDO_?DEPTNO_DETAIL? <?DEPTNO?> As you can see DEPTNO has been referenced twice and mapped to different named values in the left hand column. These values can then be used to name individual cells in the Excel template. You'll also notice a mix of Publisher <? ...?> and native XSL commands. So the world is your oyster on the mapping and the complexity you might need for calculations or string manipulation. Shirley has kindly built out a sample Excel template, data and result here so you can see how it all hangs together. the XDO_METADATA sheet is hidden, just right click on the sheet names and use the Unhide command to show it.

• vJUG: Worldwide Virtual JUG Created

  London Java Community leader and technical evangelist Simon Maple has created a Meetup called vJUG, with aim toward connecting Java Developers in the virtual world. The aim for vJUG is: Get technical leaders from around the world to present to the vJUG members (without travel cost concerns!). Work with local JUGs to provide worldwide content to their members and help JUGs present to a worldwide audience. Provide content to devs without access to a local JUG. Be a hub that will stream content from other JUG sessions live.  The vJUG is not intended to replace local JUG efforts. "The vJUG can never be, and will never be, as vibrant and valuable to its members as a proper local JUG can. Why? Because the true value in JUG meetings are the face to face interactions and personal networking," said Maple. "However, many people do not have access to a really active JUG with great speakers and awesome content. Or, like me, the closest JUG is about 90 mins away." WebEx and Google Hangouts are great, Maple explained, he hopes vJUG will provide more coordination of online events.  Maple hopes that in the future, vJUG will provide An Events calendar with reminders and links to up coming meetings. • BGP path prepended route not listed anywhere

  We have a simple multi-homed setup with two routers that advertise our AS to two ISP. The second ISP (ISP B) is only used for backup when ISP A goes down, so we prepended our AS 3 times on this route. I spend a couple of hours this morning poking at looking glass routers all over the internet, and none of them list our backup route with the prepended path. I checked the south african internet exchange, the london internet exchange, oregon internet exchange and a couple dozen ISPs. All of them have multiples routes through ISP A, often with 3 or 4 hops. The route through ISP B should, at least, appear somewhere and have 5 or 6 hops. But I couldn't find it anywhere. (I checked the full bgp tables on the looking glass routers, using show ip bgp 65000) My questions are: Is there a limit to the size of a route after which most routers will simply discard the route ? Is our backup route even going to work when ISP A goes down, if no router knows about it ? Our two routers are connected on iBGP. Would it be possible that the route through ISPB is not announced because the iBGP session prefers the route through ISPA ? This is what non-exist-map and advertise-map are supposed to do, but none of those are used in either routers.

• Datacentre Rack naming convention with flexibility for reassignment of server roles

  We are just shifting across to a new rack and until now have used names of cartoon characters. This is not going to work anymore, and need a better naming convention. Physically i would like to name the servers by location, and then have an alias as to its actual function/customer, i.e. Physical name LONS1R1SVR1 meaning London, suite 1, rack 1, server 1 Customer Alias Since the servers can be reassigned from time to time, for the above physical server name, i would have an alias as a column in a spreadsheet, that would be set to the customers host-name, i.e. wwww.customerserver1.com Patching For patching, I am looking at labeling up the physically connections, i.e. LON1S1R1SVR1-PWR1 LON1S1R1SVR1-PWR2 LON1S1R1SVR1-ETH0 LON1S1R1SVR1-KVM Ultimately if i am labeling cables, I really want to avoid putting LON1S1R1SQLSVR on any patch cord in case the server gets formatted and changed from a SQL server to a WWW server which would need to relabel all the patch cords also. In addition, throwing in virtual machines, i have got confused very quickly. I appreciated that it may be confusing having a physical host-name and customer alias. Please let me know what you run with and any other standards or best practices that i can follow?

• Setting up Virtual Host in Fedora Core 15 using apache

  I'm trying to setup a couple of Virtual Host files on my Localhost PC running Fedora Core 15. Now I get this working, but now onloy one Virtual Host site works, and if I type in 127.0.0.1/test/testApp.php which is not related to the Virtual Host site , I get redirected to the Virtual Host site. Here's what I did. I created a new folder called virtualhosts in /etc/httpd/ where all my host files are stored in the following format site.conf In /etc/conf/httpd.conf I enabled NameVirtualHost *:80 and included the host files at the bottom of the config page like this Include virtualhosts/*.conf In /etc/hosts I added the line 127.0.0.1 website No when I run sudo httpd -t I get Syntax OK I restart apache and then the Virtualhost works, but as soon as I add other hosts and only use 127.0.0.1 as above it still links to the original host. Am I doing anything wrong here or left out something? • Lost user account for Windows Vista

  Hello, I'm trying to help a friend who's lost her user account in Vista. I know there's supposed to be a way you can boot the computer from the vista installation disc and create an admin account you can later login with, but her installation disc is in Australia and her laptop in London. Is there any other way to get in? Or would it be better to try and access just the harddrive? She's mainly concerned with getting all her data off it. As for how she lost the account, I'll let her explain in her words. :) My computer basically got some virus and now is up sh*t creek. it told me i had this cryptic thingy majiggy was missing and then this fake virus told me i needed to scan my computer. SO i tried to do malware thing but it kept shutting my computer down. ANYWAY...now its it will only open up with 'launch startup repair' and has got rid of my settings for logging in and wants me to be 'other user' which i have no password or username for'...so basically im stuffed. • Differences & Similarities Between Programming Paradigms

  Hi Guys I've been working as a developer for the past 4 years, with the 4 years previous to that studying software development in college. In my 4 years in the industry I've done some work in VB6 (which was a joke), but most of it has been in C#/ASP.NET. During this time, I've moved from an "object-aware" procedural paradigm to an object-oriented paradigm. Lately I've been curious about other programming paradigms out there, so I thought I'd ask other developers their opinions on the similarities & differences between these paradigms, specifically to OOP? • Text mining with PHP

  Hi, I'm doing a project for a college class I'm taking. I'm using PHP to build a simple web app that classify tweets as "positive" (or happy) and "negative" (or sad) based on a set of dictionaries. The algorithm I'm thinking of right now is Naive Bayes classifier or decision tree. However, I can't find any PHP library that helps me do some serious language processing. Python has NLTK (http://www.nltk.org). Is there anything like that for PHP? I'm planning to use WEKA as the back end of the web app (by calling Weka in command line from within PHP), but it doesn't seem that efficient. Do you have any idea what I should use for this project? Or should I just switch to Python? Thanks

  There's about 2 months left in Al Zimmermann's Son of Darts programming contest, and I'd like to improve my standing (currently in the 60s) to something more respectable. I'd like to get some ideas from the great community of stackoverflow on how best to approach this problem. The contest problem is known as the Global Postage Stamp Problem in literatures. I don't have much experience with optimization algorithms (I know of hillclimbing and simulated annealing in concept only from college), and in fact the program that I have right now is basically sheer brute force, which of course isn't feasible for the larger search spaces. Here are some papers on the subject: A Postage Stamp Problem (Alter & Barnett, 1980) Algorithms for Computing the h-Range of the Postage Stamp Problem (Mossige, 1981) A Postage Stamp Problem (Lunnon, 1986) Two New Techniques for Computing Extremal h-bases Ak (Challis, 1992) Any hints and suggestions are welcome.   So I have the following lines of code in a function sock = urllib.urlopen(url) html = sock.read() sock.close() and they work fine when I call the function by hand. • Is it possible to use best_in_place with typeahead from twitter bootstrap?

  Basically, I am using best_in_place in my rails webapp to let users edit their profile info in place. The thing is, I would like users to be presented with a typeahead form for certain entries.. Here's what I'm working with: <p>College/University: <input type="text" class="span3" style="margin: 0 auto;" data-provide="typeahead" data-items="8" data-source='["University of Pennsylvania","Harvard","Yale","Princeton","Cornell","Brown","Columbia","Dartmouth"]'></p> This gives me a working form box with typeahead. However, I want to be able to wrap this in best_in_place with something like <%= best_in_place @student, :education %> so that users only see the typeahead form when they click on the text, and upon clicking away from the box or hitting enter the selection is stored in the database. Is there a reasonably easy way to do this?

• What's the best way to explain parsing to a new programmer?

  I am a college student getting my Computer Science degree. A lot of my fellow students really haven't done a lot of programming. They've done their class assignments, but let's be honest here those questions don't really teach you how to program. I have had several other students ask me questions about how to parse things, and I'm never quite sure how to explain it to them. Is it best to start just going line by line looking for substrings, or just give them the more complicated lecture about using proper lexical analysis, etc. to create tokens, use BNF, and all of that other stuff? They never quite understand it when I try to explain it. What's the best approach to explain this without confusing them or discouraging them from actually trying.

• What's the next big thing after LINQ?

  I started using LINQ (Language Integrated Query) when it was still in beta, more specifically Microsoft .NET LINQ Preview (May 2006). Almost 4 years have passed and here we are using LINQ in a lot of projects for the most diverse tasks. I even wrote my final college project based on LINQ. You see how I like it. LINQ and more recently PLINQ (Parallel LINQ) give our jobs a great boost when it comes to more programming power and less lines of code leading us to more expressive and readable code. I keep thinking what could be the next big language improvement for C# after LINQ. I know there are some promissing language features coming as Code Contracts, etc, but nothing having the impact that LINQ had. What do you think could be the next big thing?
