• Enabling Nvidia driver messes up splash screen

  When you boot from live CD, or doing the first boot after installing Ubuntu, splash screen looks awesome. But as soon as you enable nvidia-current driver, installed with apt-get, splash screen goes all crazy. With crazy I mean that resolution is very low, font(I assume) is very weird and it all looks like it's been broken. This happened with 10.04 and now again with 10.10. How do I fix splash screen after enabling nvidia drivers?

  I was wondering if there are any studies (formal or not-so-formal) that show correlation between a developer productivity and the workstation used to develop software. It is often heard as argument that the high spec workstations increase the productivity (or the low spec machines impact productivity to the greater extent). To me it sound reasonable, however I'd like to verify the statement with some studies if such exists. Can you help me with that?

• A way to store potentially infinite 2D map data?

  I have a 2D platformer that currently can handle chunks with 100 by 100 tiles, with the chunk coordinates are stored as longs, so this is the only limit of maps (maxlong*maxlong). All entity positions etc etc are chunk relevant and so there is no limit there. The problem I'm having is how to store and access these chunks without having thousands of files. Any ideas for a preferably quick & low HD cost archive format that doesn't need to open everything at once?

• Slow wireless on Dell XPS 14 ultrabook

  I've got Ubuntu 12.04 running on this Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook (L421X). Everything is working but my wireless transfer rates are low. I'm getting about 1MB/s download speed on the ultrabook vs 15MB/s on the E6500. If I move into the room with the access point the speed climbs to 15MB/s so I'm guessing it is a signal strength issue but wavemon shows comparable signals to those seen by the E6500. Are there any settings I can tweak in hopes of making it faster?

  I have been trying to run WoW on Ubuntu 12.04. When I run it on unity, the frame rate is very low and it is impossible to play. Although, when I launch it on gnome shell, for some reason, the frame rate gets very high and the playing experience is very comfortable. The problem is that I prefer running Unity instead of gnome shell, but I like to play WoW too. Is there a way to run WoW on Unity, with no lag?

  I've looked into a number of video hosting options, but none seem to provide a .mp4 link to your uploaded video, which I require for use in a project using BigVideo.js. The only service I've found to provide this functionality so far is VimeoPro, which I can't afford. Is there any way to do this for free in YouTube? Or, otherwise, are there any other (preferably low- or no-cost) video hosting providers that will provide a .mp4 link?

  I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bi on my i5-2400 system, and I'm experiencing very laggy keyboard and mouse input. I have to type really slowly or I some keys will not get registered. Also, the mouse cursor moves around very slowly at a very low frame rate. I've checked my keyboard and mouse settings and they seem to be fine. System monitor doesn't show any processes taking up significant CPU utilization. What else could be wrong?

  I am often running low on space on the system and home partition. I would like to see a list of installed programs and the space they take, in order to be able to make decisions on this matter. I do not mean a list with all components, 'secondary' programs and dependencies like in Synaptic, which I know can be also displayed in the Terminal -- so please do not set as duplicate of this question --, but just a list with the main programs (those that appear in the main menu) and with the space they occupy on the disk.   hello I'm new in linux systems and I have the same problem in every distro... the thing is that my mouse every time i move it or do anything with it blinks!!! I think it's a xorg problem or a driver problem and the only way it does not do that is when i start with the low-resolution error using a xorg.conf from another graphic chipset and i think that isn't the best choise xDD please if you can help me I have a ati rage 128, thanks a lot for your help people n.n

  When pluging an external HDMI display, it get detected and everything was supposed to be working right out of the box, except that when set the resolution to 1920x1080, the display on HDMI is really poor quality. Playing around with xrandr, when setting resolution at 1680x1050 or below, everything is smooth, when setting 1920x1080 or 1920x1080i, with wide variety of refresh rates, it's the same poor quality display.
