• .htaccess URL rewrite to multi-parameter item

  I just spent the last 10 hours of my life on this & am running in circles, so was hoping someone may be able to help me. I want a specific URL to load like this: http://example.com/f/2011/image.png?attribute=small When a URL in a format such as this hits, I'd like to rewrite it to hit the server as: http://example.com/generate.php?f=2011/image.png&attribute=small Based on above, my question is two-fold: How can I rewrite the URL in htaccess to meet my requirements above? If the original URL didn't have the attribute query string parameter, how can I ensure attribute will be false/blank/etc when it hits the server via htaccess?

• Multi-monitors and the corners of the screen

  I currently have two monitors (let's call them "left" and "middle" - you'll see why in a sec), and would love three (let's call it "right"). However, I often will throw the mouse-cursor up to the top-right corner on "middle" because for a maximised window that's where the close button will be. If I add the "right" monitor, the mouse cursor will just carry on off "middle" into "right", and aiming for the close button on "middle" will become more difficult. I'm currently using UltraMon 3.10, but does anyone know of a way to get the mouse to stick to the corners, so that it doesn't go off into the other monitor (Synergy allows this by configuring the "gap" where the mouse is allowed to travel from monitor to monitor).

• Cross platform KVM over ethernet

  I'm not sure if this exists, but this is what I'd like to do. I have a laptop and a desktop that I work on about equally. The laptop runs windows 7 and the desktop is on kubuntu 10.04. What I want to be able to do is be able to drag my mouse accross my screen and have it act like my laptop is a second monitor. Whereby I can use my desktop mouse, drag it say to the left off of my desktop monitor, and use it on my laptop (I don't care about the keyboard, just the mouse). Is that possible? Are there any other solutions that exist? I'd prefer not to have a physical kvm switch.

• Nginx load distribution and multi-domain SSL

  I'm researching into the best methods of two new parts of our infrastructure, hopefully finding a single solution for both. 1) We're currently running a single application server, and we're going to be adding an additional application server and load balance between the two. 2) We handle a few thousand domains across the application server(s), and we're looking to support SSL. The best method i've come across so far is using nginx for it's Load Distribution to serve the requests to the application servers, and for it's SSL support. If a request is using SSL, nginx accepts the request on, terminates SSL and pipes to apache (app servers). Now, that's all good, but i'm yet to figure out how we can let nginx handle multiple domains using SSL. We're potentially looking at using UCC SSL Certs, so we can support 150 domains on a single certificate, with each cert on a single IP. I'm all new to this (My experience is just with physical load balancers and a single domains on SSL), so any advice would be very much appreciated.

  I'm the admin of a handful of domains on Office 365. The thing is some of my clients would like to manage their mailboxes by themselves. So I started looking into it and the closest I got was this page: http://community.office365.com/en-us/forums/158/p/20912/98083.aspx I created a Group Role with a Write Scope according to that post. I also assigned the Reset Password, Recipiants Creation, Mail Recipients and Distribution Groups rolls. But unfortunately that just doesnt work. The user in question is still unable to manage anything. Any suggestions?

• How to set up multi users on dev server with git and github

  I'm working on lamp application. We have 2 servers (Debian) Live and Dev. I constantly work on dev main to add new features and fix bugs. When happy all works well I scp the relevant code to the Live system. Database (mysql) is local to each machine. Now this is pretty basic setup really and I want to improve the workflow a bit. I use git and github for version control. Admittedly I've only really used one branch. Their can be 3 different developers who work on the code at different times. We all use the same linux username to connect to the dev server and edit the code directly when needed. I usually then commit and push the code at the end of the day to github. One thing to bare in mind is it isn't easy to run this code on a local machine as there are many apache and subdomain configurations that wouldn't work on a local machine so it is important to work on the dev server not locally. I need to create a new process because we need to have a main trunk now and a branch with a big code re-write. What is the best way to do this. Should I create different unix logins for each developer and set up different working areas on the dev server for there changes? e.g. /var/www/mysite_derek /var/www/mysite_paul /var/www/mysite_mike my thinking is they can do a pull from the main branch and then create there own branch and merge it back in. I'm not sure how this will work though with git locally and with github. will i need to create different github user accounts as well. I'd like to do this the 'right' way and future proof for having lots of potential developers but I also don't want to over complicate it. I simple and elegant solution is preferred. any recommendations or suggestions?

• Cross-platform centralized desktop password manager

  I have been using KeePass as a desktop password manager on Windows for many years. Love it! However, I am now needing to work on different platforms much of my day (Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS X, Ubuntu, and OpenSUSE.) I'm looking for a password manager I can share across all these platforms. My ideal solution would: Run natively (not in a virtual machine) on all platforms. Store the "official" copy of the password data on a local network so I can get to it from any and all machines. It is OK if it locks (or becomes read-only) when one client is accessing it. Keep a local cached copy (read-only is fine) so I can still get to my passwords when disconnected from the network. Does any such beast exist?

• Multi-monitor resolution and position settings lost after reboot

  I've had two 1280x1024 monitors running for years on an nVidia 8800GT card with no problems. I've now replaced one monitor with a new 2560x1440 one. The card seems to support both fine, however every time I reboot the resolutions and monitor positions revert to the old settings. I've tried upgrading, downgrading, stripping out and reinstalling many versions of the nvidia drivers to no avail. Logging in as another user doesn't help - same problem. Booting into another another OS (Win7 64) works OK, so it is just this OS installation. During boot up everything looks fine (ie native 2450x1440 res) until the nVidia control panel or something is loaded which flips it back into the old mode. I have no old saved nvidia profiles. I can't find anything in the registry relating to these old settings. Its driving me crazy having to set resolutions and realign monitors on every reboot! Can anybody help?

  I have a server (debian) with two network interfaces that I would like to host multiple services and domains on; it is not entirely clear to me how the hosts file should be set up. Example: eth0, bound to WAN interface 1.2.3.4: mail.example.com www.example.com eth0:1, bound to WAN interface 1.2.3.5: www.other-domain.com eth1, bound to LAN 192.168.1.123: some-clever-hostname What should my hosts file look like? (including localhost,localhost.localdomain, etc.) Should I use DNS for some of these entries? Which ones? Thanks!

• Video streaming over multi display units

  We have to share video across around 4/8 terminals at a public facility where we need to display live video from within the facility, as well as display messages(advertisements), and also play videos(not live) which need to be controlled centrally from another location. We can do central location handling over Internet, over ssh. What we want to do is connect cameras to a computer, and use the computer to display over multiple display units. We need to do live titling if possible. Once the live local telecast which usually takes about an hour or two a day, we would like to play other videos locally off the PC server. Preferably everything should run off Linux, since budgets are very constrained.... Addendum -- Its not over WAN, it's over a local area. I prefer not using LAN, we would rather use co-axial cable if possible. The reason is if it's LAN, I need some kind of an Networking device, at least a thin client

I've setup'ed 2 monitors too, so I was thinking about the possibility of the mouse and keyboards works independent one of another. I want two mouse pointers (I think each with different colors) and 2 keyboard cursors. I think it a nice idea, but I don't know if this is possible... :( PS: My OS is Windows7

• Looking for "pad" for my keyboard + mouse in a multi-monitor setup

  I've got 2 large monitors. My keyboard and mouse are in the middle of my desk which is appropriate for work on both monitors but when I want to focus on one of them only (say that I'm writing in MS Word on the right monitor), I'd like to move my keyboard and mouse to the right. I can do that manually but because of all the wires and other things, it is quite inconvenient when done frequently. I'm looking for something that I would put under both my keyboard and my mouse and that would slide to one side or the other easily. Is there anything like that available on the market?

• ssh login with multi-keys (several users) from the same workstation

  Basically, as it comes from the title, I'd like to login from my workstation to a SSH server by using different account in different shells. What I'd like to do is to backup all my account from this server to my hard drive by using rsync, but as you know rsync can get a connection if the keys have been generated. I have already an account set with key for login without pass. What I did was to generate a key on the server and then download it on my ~/.ssh folder. I tried it with another account and I chanced the name of the key. Then I download it in my ~/.ssh...but no way to get it work. I am not an expert of this stuff. If you would provide any tips or way to set it up I would really appreciate your help. Cheers

• The best cross platform (portable) arbitrary precision math library

  Dear ninjas / hackers / wizards, I'm looking for a good arbitrary precision math library in C or C++. Could you please give me some advices / suggestions? The primary requirements: It MUST handle arbitrarily big integers (my primary interest is on integers). In case that you don't know what the word arbitrarily big means, imagine something like 100000! (the factorial of 100000). The precision MUST NOT NEED to be specified during library initialization / object creation. The precision should ONLY be constrained by the available resources of the system. It SHOULD utilize the full power of the platform, and should handle "small" numbers natively. That means on a 64-bit platform, calculating 2^33 + 2^32 should use the available 64-bit CPU instructions. The library SHOULD NOT calculate this in the same way as it does with 2^66 + 2^65 on the same platform. It MUST handle addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), integer division (/), remainder (%), power (**), increment (++), decrement (--), gcd(), factorial(), and other common integer arithmetic calculations efficiently. Ability to handle functions like sqrt() (square root), log() (logarithm) that do not produce integer results is a plus. Ability to handle symbolic computations is even better. Here are what I found so far: Java's BigInteger and BigDecimal class: I have been using these so far. I have read the source code, but I don't understand the math underneath. It may be based on theories / algorithms that I have never learnt. The built-in integer type or in core libraries of bc / Python / Ruby / Haskell / Lisp / Erlang / OCaml / PHP / some other languages: I have ever used some of these, but I have no idea on which library they are using, or which kind of implementation they are using. What I have already known: Using a char as a decimal digit, and a char* as a decimal string and do calculations on the digits using a for-loop. Using an int (or a long int, or a long long) as a basic "unit" and an array of it as an arbitrary long integer, and do calculations on the elements using a for-loop. Booth's multiplication algorithm What I don't know: Printing the binary array mentioned above in decimal without using naive methods. Example of a naive method: (1) add the bits from the lowest to the highest: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ... (2) use a char* string mentioned above to store the intermediate decimal results). What I appreciate: Good comparisons on GMP, MPFR, decNumber (or other libraries that are good in your opinion). Good suggestions on books / articles that I should read. For example, an illustration with figures on how a un-naive arbitrarily long binary to decimal conversion algorithm works is good. Any help. Please DO NOT answer this question if: you think using a double (or a long double, or a long long double) can solve this problem easily. • Been doing .NET for several years and am thinking about a platform change. Where do people suggest I go?

  Hi, I've been programming in .NET for several years now and am thinking maybe its time to do a platform switch. Any suggestions about which platform would be the best to learn? I've been thinking about going back to C++ development or just focusing on T-SQL within the Microsoft stack. I'm thinking of switching because: a) I feel that the .NET platform is increasingly becoming commodified--meaning that its more about learning a GUI and certain things to click around than really understanding programming. I'm concerned that this will lend itself to making developers on that stack increasingly paid less. b) It's very frustrating to spend your entire day essentially debugging something that should work but doesn't. Usually, Microsoft releases something that suggests anyone can just click here and there and poof there's your application. Most of the time it doesn't work and winds up sucking so much more time than it was supposed to save. c) I recently led a team in a small startup to build a WPF application. We were really hit hard with people complaining about having to download the runtime. Our code was also not portable to any other platform. Added to which, the ram usage and slowness to load of the app was remarkable for its size. I researched it and we could not find a way to optimize it. d) I'm a little concerned about being wedded to the Windows platform. What are the pros and cons of adding another platform and which platform do people suggest? Thanks!

  Visual Studio SP1 is  now available via the Web Platform Installer, which means you've got three options: Download the 1.5 GB ISO image Run the 750KB Web Installer (which figures out what you need to download) Install via Web PI Note: I covered some tips for installing VS2010 SP1 last week - including some that apply to all of these, such as removing options you don't use prior to installing the service pack to decrease the installation time and download size. Two Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Web PI packages There are actually two WebPI packages for VS2010 SP1. There's the standard Visual Studio 2010 SP1 package [Web PI link], which includes (quoting ScottGu's post): VS2010 2010 SP1 ASP.NET MVC 3 (runtime + tools support) IIS 7.5 Express SQL Server Compact Edition 4.0 (runtime + tools support) Web Deployment 2.0 The notes on that package sum it up pretty well: Looking for the latest everything? Look no further. This will get you Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 and the RTM releases of ASP.NET MVC 3, IIS 7.5 Express, SQL Server Compact 4.0 with tooling, and Web Deploy 2.0. It's the value meal of Microsoft products. Tell your friends! Note: This bundle includes the Visual Studio 2010 SP1 web installer, which will dynamically determine the appropriate service pack components to download and install. This is typically in the range of 200-500 MB and will take 30-60 minutes to install, depending on your machine configuration. There is also a Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Core package [Web PI link], which only includes only the SP without any of the other goodies (MVC3, IIS Express, etc.). If you're doing any web development, I'd highly recommend the main pack since it the other installs are small, simple installs, but if you're working in another space, you might want the core package. Installing via the Web Platform Installer I generally like to go with the Web PI when possible since it simplifies most software installations due to things like: Smart dependency management - installing apps or tools which have software dependencies will automatically figure out which dependencies you don't have and add them to the list (which you can review before install) Simultaneous download and install - if your install includes more than one package, it will automatically pull the dependencies first and begin installing them while downloading the others Lists the latest downloads - no need to search around, as they're all listed based on a live feed Includes open source applications - a lot of popular open source applications are included as well as Microsoft software and tools No worries about reinstallation - WebPI installations detect what you've got installed, so for instance if you've got MVC 3 installed you don't need to worry about the VS2010 SP1 package install messing anything up In addition to the links I included above, you can install the WebPI from http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx, and if you have Web PI installed you can just tap the Windows key and type "Web Platform" to bring it up in the Start search list. You'll see Visual Studio SP1 listed in the spotlight list as shown below. That's the standard package, which includes MVC 3 / IIS 7.5 Express / SQL Compact / Web Deploy. If you just want the core install, you can use the search box in the upper right corner, typing in "Visual Studio SP1" as shown. Core Install: Use Web PI or the Visual Studio Web Installer? I think the big advantage of using Web PI to install VS 2010 SP1 is that it includes the other new bits. If you're going to install the SP1 core, I don't think there's as much advantage to using Web PI, as the Web PI Core install just downloads the Visual Studio Web Installer anyways. I think Web PI makes it a little easier to find the download, but not a lot. The Visual Studio Web Installer checks dependencies, so there's no big advantage there. If you do happen to hit any problems installing Visual Studio SP1 via Web PI, I'd recommend running the Visual Studio Web Installer, then running the Web PI VS 2010 SP1 package to get all the other goodies. I talked to one person who hit some random snag, recommended that, and it worked out. Custom Web Platform Installer bundles You can create links that will launch the Web Platform Installer with a custom list of tools. You can see an example of this by clicking through on the install button at http://asp.net/downloads (cancelling the installation dialog). You'll see this in the address bar: http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appsxml=&appid=MVC3;ASPNET;NETFramework4;SQLExpress;VWD Notice that the appid querystring parameter includes a semicolon delimited list, and you can make your own custom Web PI links with your own desired app list. Aha, that's the trick. You can link to a list of cool packages, but you need to know the App ID's to link to them. Since the entire application is custom, we've weighed building a custom checkout but are strongly leaning towards using existing software to avoid having to build lots of admin reporting as well as a coupon engine down the road. The two questions we're pondering are: Is it better to a) build our application custom and use whatever e-commerce software we select just for the payment piece, or b) use the e-commerce software as the basis and build our application around it/as a module/etc? Which e-commerce platform should we use? I've looked into a variety of off the shelf e-commerce software, but it's not clear to me which would be easiest to integrate with. I've researched on the Web and looked at many of the threads on SO to compiled a list of potential candidates: www.magentocommerce.com/ (seems difficult to integrate with) www.prestashop.com/ www.nopcommerce.com/ www.opencart.com/ www.cubecart.com/ www.spreecommerce.com/ www.interspire.com/ www.tradingeye.com/ We're most concerned with the level of effort required with ramping up on the software and then doing the integration with our custom functionality. We're most proficient with PHP, ASP.NET and some ROR and are only considering those technologies. We prefer open source, but would be open to commercial if there's a significant upside. Any experiences with similar projects and advice is greatly appreciated.

  Hi. I'm looking for cross-platform scripting (language) for windows, Linux, MacOS X. I'm tired of .bat / bash . I would like to do things like for example ,,lock workstation'' at automatic login (I had this in X-Window but the solution was pretty ugly; now, I would like that on MS Windows and not that ugly :-) ). Generally: automate tasks. Or would I be better off with Windows Scripting Host? PowerShell also comes to mind, but that's seems to Windows-only for my taste. Can languages like Python, Ruby, (Java?) interact (elegantly? sensibly?) with WSH? Also things like DBUS, DCOM, etc come to mind as part of the picture. Currently I use a mixture of Java, .bat, bash, Ruby, Scala; some VBA for Excel. Which sometimes gets pretty ugly. I would like a cross-platform general solution with/using ,,native'' parts close to OS-specifics. Like e.g. Ruby driving some Windows-specific stuff (just a guess). What do You use? TIA

• Looking for a fast, compact, streamable, multi-language, strongly typed serialization format

  I'm currently using JSON (compressed via gzip) in my Java project, in which I need to store a large number of objects (hundreds of millions) on disk. I have one JSON object per line, and disallow linebreaks within the JSON object. This way I can stream the data off disk line-by-line without having to read the entire file at once. It turns out that parsing the JSON code (using http://www.json.org/java/) is a bigger overhead than either pulling the raw data off disk, or decompressing it (which I do on the fly). Ideally what I'd like is a strongly-typed serialization format, where I can specify "this object field is a list of strings" (for example), and because the system knows what to expect, it can deserialize it quickly. I can also specify the format just by giving someone else its "type". It would also need to be cross-platform. I use Java, but work with people using PHP, Python, and other languages. So, to recap, it should be: Strongly typed Streamable (ie. read a file bit by bit without having to load it all into RAM at once) Cross platform (including Java and PHP) Fast Free (as in speech) Any pointers?
