• Apache returns 403 Forbidden for alternative port vhost

  I'm having an issue getting vhosts to work on Apache 2.2, Debian 6. I have two VirtualHosts, one on port 80 and one on port 8888. The port 80 one has been created automatically by DirectAdmin, the 8888 is a custom one. It's configuration is as follows. <VirtualHost *:8888 > DocumentRoot /home/user/public_html/development ServerName www.myserver.nl ServerAlias myserver.nl <Directory "/home/user/public_html/development"> Options +Indexes +FollowSymLinks +MultiViews AllowOverride All Order Allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> Of course I also have a NameVirtualHost *:8888 The port 80 DocumentRoot is /home/user/public_html/production, which is perfectly accessible and works like a charm. The port 8888 docroot of /home/user/public_html/development is 403 forbidden though. I have compared the permissions for both folders. They seem fine to me. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 17 16:14 development drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Aug 18 04:29 production Also, the index.php file which is supposed to display when accessing through port 8888, located in /development/: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 41 Aug 17 16:14 index.html I have looked at my error_log and found many of the following entries, only being added to the log file when accessing through port 8888. [Sat Aug 18 04:35:09 2012] [error] [client 27.32.156.232] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user/public_html /home/user/public_html is a symbolic link that refers to /home/user/domains/mydomain/public_html. The symbolic link has the following permissions: lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 29 Aug 17 15:56 public_html -> ./domains/mydomain/public_html I'm at a loss. It seems that everything is readable or executable. I've set the Directory to FollowSymLinks in the httpd.conf file, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. If I change that directory tag to <Directory "/home/admin/public_html"> (so it has FollowSymLinks on that as well) it still does not work. Any help is greatly appreciated. If I need to post more information, let me know. I'm pretty much a beginner at this stuff. .. .. UPDATE: I ended up changing the configuration to directly go to the actual path of the files, avoiding the public_html symlink altogether. That worked. Thanks for the suggestions folks. DocumentRoot /home/user/domains/mydomain/public_html/development instead of DocumentRoot /home/user/public_html/development

• Send raw data to USB parallel port after upgrading to 11.10 oneiric

  I have a laser cutter connected via a generic USB to parallel adapter. The laser cutter speaks HPGL, as it happens, but since this is a laser cutter and not a plotter, I usually want to generate the HPGL myself, since I care about the ordering, speed, and direction of cuts and so on. In previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to print to the cutter by copying an HPGL file directly to the corresponding USB "lp" device. For example: cp foo.plt /dev/usblp1 Well, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric, and I can't find any "lp" devices in /dev anymore. D'oh! What's the preferred way to send raw data to a parallel port in Ubuntu? I've tried System Settings Printing + Add, hoping that I might be able to associate my device with some kind of "raw printer" driver and print to it with a command like lp -d LaserCutter foo.plt But my USB to parallel adapter doesn't seem to show up in the list. What I do see are my HP Color LaserJet, two USB-to-serial adapters, "Enter URI", and "Network Printer". Meanwhile, over in /dev, I do see /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 devices for the 2 USB-to-serial adapters. I don't see anything obvious corresponding to the HP printer (which was /dev/usblp0 prior to the upgrade), except for generic USB stuff. For example, sudo find /dev | grep lp produces no output. I do seem to be able to print to the HP printer just fine, though. The printer setup GUI gives it a device URI starting with "hp:" which isn't much help for the parallel adapter. The CUPS administrator's guide makes it sound like I might need to feed it a device URI of the form parallel:/dev/SOMETHING, but of course if I had a /dev/SOMETHING I'd probably just go on writing to it directly. • Are there Negative Impact of opensource on commercial environment?

  I know this is not a good fit for Stack Overflow but wasn't sure if it was good for this site also so let me know if its not and I'll delete it. I love programming for fun but my role in my company is not technical. I have always loved the hacker culture and have been trying to drive that openness within my company from day one. My company has a very broad range of products and there are a few that are not strategic to us so I wanted to open source them (so we can focus on what makes us unique and open source the products that every firm has). Our industry does not open source(we would be the first firm to try this) and the feedback I'm getting from my management team is either 1) we'll destroy the industry or 2) all competitive commercial firms will unite against us and we'll be wiped out either way. I disagreed on both points because I think transparency will only grow our industry and our firm (think of McDonalds/KFC sharing their recipe openly, people may copy you, competitors may target you, but customers also may feel more comfortable buying your product. The value add, I believe, is in the delivery and experience not in hoarding the recipe). It's a big battle in my firm right now between the IT people who have seen the positive effects of sharing and the business people who think we'll be giving up everything (they prefer we sell parts we want to opensource, but in their defense this is standard when divesting something). Our industry is very secretive and I don't want to put anyone(even my competitors employees) out of a job yet I don't want to protect inefficient people by not being open with everyone. Yet I've seen so many amazing technologies created in interesting ways just by giving people freedom to take apart code and put it back together. I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts(doesn't have to be to my specific situation, I'm looking for the general lessons). Its a very stressful decision(but one I feel I must make) because if we go the open source route then there will be no going back. So what are your thoughts? Does open sourcing apply generally or is it only really applicable to software? Is it overall good for people in the industry and outside? I'm actually more interested in the negativeness effects(although positive are welcomed as well) Update: Long story short, although code is involved this is not so much about code as it is more about the idea of open sourcing. We are a mid sized quant hedge fund. We have some unique strategies but also have the standard long/short, arbitrage, global macro, etc.. funds. We are keeping the unique funds we have but the other stuff that everyone else has we are considering open sourcing (We have put in years of work & millions of dollars into. Our funds is pretty popular and our performance is either in first or second quartile so I suspect there will be interest but I don't know to what extent). The goal is not to get a community to work for us or anything, the goal is to let anyone who wants to tinker with it do so and create anything they want (it will not be part of our product line although I may unofficially allocate some our of staff's time to assist any community that grows). Although the code base is quite large, the value in this is the industry knowledge and approaches we have acquired (there are many books on artificial intelligence and quant trading but they are often years behind what's really going on as most firms forbid their staff from discussing what they are doing). We are also considering after we move our clients out to let the software still run and output the resulting portfolios for free as well so people can at least see the results(as long as we have avail. infrastructure). I think our main choices are, we can continue to fight for market share in a products that are becoming commoditized, we can shut the funds/products down(and keep the code but no one outside of our firm will ever learn from it) or we can open source it and let people do what they want. By open sourcing it, my idea is that the talent pool in the industry will grow because right now most of our hires have the same background (CFA, MBA, similar school, same experience,etc.. because we can't spend time training people so the industry 'standardizes' most people and thus the firms themselves start to look/act similar) but this may allow us to identify talent that has never been in the industry before (if we put a GPU license then as people learn from what we did, we can learn from what they do as well and maybe apply it to other areas of our firm). I see a lot of benefits but not many negatives while my peers at the company see the opposite.

  In extension of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1580750/example-code-of-libssh2-being-used-for-port-forwarding I was wondering if there's an "easier" way to connect to the locally binded addr:port. From the link: you bind a remote port and list it locally, you accept incoming data from the port and send it to another socket (namely the local addr:port), after which I'd like to connect to the local addr:port. Is there a way to skip the "send it to another" step and direct the data directly for my "connect to localhost" ? There are two parts to why I want this, first, it seems excessive, and in the spirit of piping, I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible. Second, since I'm trying to connect to a localhost'ed bound port forward, all code is in the same thread, making a continiously getting data-sending data, and polling the sending data from another socket, a bit tricky. • Using open2300 with Ubuntu

  Hello, I am currently running Ubuntu 8.10 and have been trying to use Open2300 to read data from a Lacrosse WS-2310 weather station and report it to the WUnderground server. The program compiles fine but when I try to run it, it does one of two things: usually it pauses for about 4 minutes, then prints "could not reset" to the screen. But sometimes it just hangs forever. It seems like my computer is unable to communicate with the weather station. I have set the serial port as /dev/ttyS0 in the open2300.conf file and i have also tried /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc with the same result. As far as I can tell, there are no other settings regarding how Open2300 communicates with the device. Is my serial port locked somehow? It could be something as simple as an incorrect configuration for my serial port or something, but I would have no idea how to check that or change the configuration.   I'm debugging some code that writes directly to a COM port in order to print receipts on a receipt printer. The printer model is something like an Epsom TM-88. Instead of printing reams of thermal paper while debugging this code, it would be nice if I could use some kind of virtual printer. Like PDFCreator or FinePrint, but with a virtual COM port instead of a virtual windows printer. Does anyone know of such a thing? Edit: The code sends control characters to get bold text and other formatting. I'd like to see this in the output if possible.

• Port 80 is being used by SYSTEM (PID 4), what is that?

  I am trying to use port 80 for my application server, but when I perform "netstat -aon" I get TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4 When I look up the process in task manager, it shows PID 4 is SYSTEM, thats it, not extension... nothing, just "SYSTEM". Whats going on here? I'm afraid to end this process, what do I do? UPDATE: I've solved this through a stackoverflow question.   I'm trying to implement a simple FTP server (a variation of the EFTP protocol) in linux. When a client connects and sends the PASV command, the server should respond with a port number, so the client can connect to that port to transmit the file. How can the server choose a port number? Do I need to iterate through all the ports from 1024 to 65535 until I find a port that the process can bind to?   There is some code which is GPL or LGPL that I am considering using for an iPhone project. If I took that code (javascript) and rewrote it in a different language for use on the iPhone would that be a legal issue? In theory the process that has happened is that I have gone through each line of the project, learnt what it is doing, and then re implemented the ideas in a new language. To me it seems this is like learning how to implement something, but then re-implementing it separate from the original licence. Therefore you have only copied the algorithm, which arguably you could have learnt from somewhere else other than the original project. Does the licence cover the specific implementation or the algorithm as well?

• Run application in specific X server or VNC port

  I have an application that I'd like to run, yet I'd like it to be visible only through a certain VNC port. I don't want the app to show up on the normal Ubuntu desktop. I want the app to run "in the background", and be viewable through VNC only. And when connected to this "alternate X server", the end-user wouldn't see any menu bars, no window decorations.. Just the app. Come to think of it, what I'm asking for is a sort of kiosk-mode for only a certain app, accessible through VNC. Is this possible or am I really reaching here? Thanks! • Over-Current condition on port 7 or 8

  I am having a problem with my USB ports. It shows over-current conditions on ports 7 and 8. I have heard that this is caused by a damaged USB port, and since it is detecting it on two ports it seems that I have two that are broken. I do indeed have two that do not work, so that is not the issue. What I would like to do is disable whatever program is running over-current condition checks. tty's are unusable at this point. Every few second a new over-current condition occurs. • VMPlayer does not flush all outputs to serial port

  I have a Dell Adaptec 2610SA 6 port SATA RAID PCI card with 3 hard drives on it and everything works fine. I plugged another hard drive to it and the system (Ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit) seems not to recognize it. Strange thing is that, as happened in the past, if I re-install the system, it recognizes the new hardware plugged to RAID card.
