• iiR Hospital Digital 2011: Tras la historia digital ¿qué?

  Como el acceso a la documentación está restringido, sólo voy a comentar por encima algunos temas o planteamientos que me han llamado la atención del VI Foro Hospital Digital 2011, organizado por iiR. Y comienzo destacando la buena moderación de Maribel Grau del Hospital Clínic de Barcelona que estuvo sobria, eficaz y motivadora del debate. Me impresionó el proyecto Hospital Líquido del Hospital San Joan de Deu de Barcelona por el compromiso corporativo con una medicina colaborativa involucrando a los pacientes y a los profesionales, con unas iniciativas de eSalud y Salud2.0 avanzadas y apoyadas en un buen soporte legal, tecnológico, de los profesionales y con procesos bien definidos. Es un tema corporativo y no una prueba, como bien explicó Jorge Juan Fernández y detalló después Júlia Cutillas, cuyo rol, por cierto, es de Community Manager. En el debate salió el tema del retorno de la inversión y ese es un tema inmaduro, ya que es difícil de encontrar métricas adecuadas, pero no dudan de su continuidad ya que forma parte de una estrategia corporativa, en la que siempre hay elementos que forman parte de los costes generales y que se consideran necesarios para prestar el nivel de servicio que se desea ofrecer. Cecilia Pérez desde su posición como Jefe de Implantación de HCE en el Hospital de Móstoles hizo énfasis en la importancia de la gestión efectiva del cambio cuando se implanta un sistema de historia clínica electrónica que pasa por una inicial negación de los usarios al cambio, que luego presentan una resistencia al prinicipio para luego empezar a explorar posibilidades y llegar a un compromiso con el cambio. Santiago Borrás, Jefe de Sistemas del Hospital del Henares, partió de un hospital digital, pero eso no es más que el comienzo. Tras tres años la frustración de los profesionales es no perderse entre demasiada información. La etapa necesaria tras la digitalición es la generación y compartición del cononocimiento. Cristina Ibarrola, Directora de Atención Primaria del SNS-O comentó la experiencia de las interconsultas primaria-especializada que reducen la carga asistencial en primaria al aumentar la resolución. Hay una reserva de tiempos específicos en las agendas de los profesionales de ambos lados para garantizar una respuesta en un máximo de 48 horas. Eso ha llevado a una flexibiliazación de la agenda de los médicos de primaria que tienen un 25% más de tiempo para las consultas presenciales. Parece que aquí la opción tomada es dar más tiempo por paciente en vez de más pacientes, supongo que en parte porque la presión asistencial en Navarra tengo entendido que no es tan fuerte como en otras zonas. Alejandra Cubero comentó la experiencia de identificación de pacientes y de inteoperabilidad en Hospitales de Madrid. Ana Rosa Pulido presentó los logros del SES y su proyecto actual de Imagen Médica No Radiológica. Richard Bernat explicó la experiencia de HCE de Salud de la Mujer Dexeus, indicando que si bien no hay métricas del retorno de la inversión, sí hay una percepción del valor por las diferentes direcciones. Arturo Quesada glosó la experiencia de Jimena en el Hospital de Ávila, Joan Chafer desgranó el arduo proceso de introducción de sucesivas soluciones digitales en el Hospital Clínico San Carlos de Madrid comenzando por “Hogar Digital”, todo ello con financiación externa o recursos propios y cerró el turno de intervenciones no comerciales Pedro A. • PASS: 2013 Summit Location

  HQ recently posted a brief update on our search for a location for 2013.  It includes links to posts by four Board members and two community members. I’d like to add my thoughts to the mix and ask you a question.  But I can’t give you a real understanding without telling you some history first. So far we’ve had the Summit in Chicago, San Francisco, Orlando, Dallas, Denver and Seattle.  Each has a little different feel and distinct memories.  I enjoyed getting drinks by the pool in Orlando after the sessions ended.  I didn’t like that our location in Dallas was so far away from all the nightlife.  Denver was in downtown but we had real challenges with hotels.  I enjoyed the different locations.  I always enjoyed the announcement during the third keynote with the location of the next Summit. There are two big events that impacted my thinking on the Summit location.  The first was our transition to the new management company in early 2007.  The event that September in Denver was put on with a six month planning cycle by a brand new headquarters staff.  It wasn’t perfect but came off much better than I had dared to hope.  It also moved us out of the cookie cutter conferences that we used to do into a model where we have a lot more control.  I think you’ll all agree that the production values of our last few Summits have been fantastic.  That Summit also led to our changing relationship with Microsoft.  Microsoft holds two seats on the PASS Board.  All the PASS Board members face the same challenge: we all have full-time jobs and PASS comes in second place professionally (or sometimes further back).  Starting in 2008 we were assigned a liaison from Microsoft that had a much larger block of time to coordinate with us.  That changed everything between PASS and Microsoft.  Suddenly we were talking to product marketing, Microsoft PR, their event team, the Tech*Ed team, the education division, their user group team and their field sales team – locally and internationally.  We strengthened our relationship with CSS, SQLCAT and the engineering teams.  We had exposure at the executive level that we’d never had before.  And their level of participation at the Summit changed from under 100 people to 400-500 people.  I think those 400+ Microsoft employees have value at a conference on Microsoft SQL Server.  For the first time, Seattle had a real competitive advantage over other cities. I’m one that looked very hard at staying in Seattle for a long, long time.  I think those Microsoft engineers have value to our attendees.  I think the increased support that Microsoft can provide when we’re in Seattle has value to our attendees.  But that doesn’t tell the whole story.  There’s a significant (and vocal!) percentage of our membership that wants the Summit outside Seattle.  Post-2007 PASS doesn’t know what it’s like to have a Summit outside of Seattle.  I think until we have a Summit in another city we won’t really know the trade-offs. I think a model where we move every third or every other year is interesting.  But until we have another Summit outside Seattle and we can evaluate the logistics and how important it is to have depth and variety in our Microsoft participation we won’t really know. Another benefit that comes with a move is variety or diversity.  I learn more when I’m exposed to new things and new people.  I believe that moving the Summit will give a different set of people an opportunity to attend. Grant Fritchey writes “It seems that the board is leaning, extremely heavily, towards making it a permanent fixture in Seattle.”  I don’t believe that’s true.  I know there was discussion of that earlier but I don’t believe it’s true now. And that brings me to my question.  Do we announce the city now or do we wait until the 2012 Summit?  I’m happy to announce Seattle vs. not-Seattle as soon as we sign the contract.  But I’d like to leave the actual city announcement until the 2011 Summit.  I like the drama and mystery of it.  I also like that it doesn’t give you a reason to skip a Summit and wait for the next one if it’s closer or back in Seattle.  The other side of the coin is that your planning is easier if you know where it is.  What do you think?

• Multi Pass Blend

  I am seeking the simplest working example of a two pass HLSL pixel shader. It can do anything really, but the main idea is to perform "ping ponging" to take the output of the first pass and then send it for the second pass. In my example I want to draw to the R channel and then draw to the G channel and produce a simple Venn Diagram in the shader, but need to detect overlap. I can currently detect one or the other but not overlap. There are a red and green circle overlapping, and I want to put a dynamic texture map in the overlap region. I can currently put it in either or. • PASS Summit Location follow up - result analysis

  I've had a chance to look at the results directly and it is clear that there is a tough choice. On the one hand people are saying that they prefer to have PASS put their money into chapters and things like 24hrs of PASS rather than an event on the east coast. Whilst at the same time almost 50% more people said they would be more likely to attend an East Coast event than a Seattle event, and 60% more said they would be more likley to attend a US Central region event. Whats more 60% said that the summit should be outside of Seattle every other year with only 19% saying it should always stay in Seattle. So clearly there is a huge desire for a non Seattle event. Looking at the other reasons for keeping in Seattle and the big one being that people want Microsoft speakers. More people think its somewhat important of very important that the conference is in walking distance of the hotels and restaurants. Essentially the Q6 questions show an even balance for normal conference, highlighting that they are prepared to travel, not with the family and they want a well laid out conference. Whats very annoying is that the questions, as people have commented, were biased towards certain answers. For instance there was no option about whether people feel its important to have industry leading speakers, MVPs etc at the conference. Only questions about Microsoft speakers. I know survey writing is very difficult to avoid biasing the answers one way or another. There was also no choice to show peoples preference, would people prefer Microsoft speakers or the summit to be held on the East Coast/Central US. I also find it amazing that people prefer hundres of developers rather than the SQLCAT and CSS teams, surely that indicates another issue about a lack of understanding of what the these teams do. All in all it is clear that people showed they want an event outside of Seattle and don't want PASS to be putting money into that instead of into other community activites. I find it suprising that there appears to have been a huge weighting against certain questions which have prioritised them over the huge desire for a PASS summit outside of Seattle. Lets see where we will be in 2013 or maybe they will rethink 2012 who knows.

• SSDs at PASS 2012

  There were 7 companies exhibiting SSD products as PASS this year, and one with a product to support SSD storage. This is not counting Dell, EMC and HP who have SSD products, but were at PASS for other reasons. This shows that many have aspirations with the hope that market leadership is not yet firmly set. I have a c# method which is taking six arguments, i really hate that. I could create a carrier class for that and pass it as an argument, but i want to know if structure could do the job. • Problem with Amiga 1200 accelerator board

  I just recently walked past a dump, where in the corner of my eye I spotted something that looked like a huge keyboard. I went to take a closer look, and found out that it was an Amiga 1200 with a 030 accellerator board and scala dongle. Jackpot! So anyway; I dried it, cleaned it, it works, but the floppy was not powering on and same with the harddrive. I am using an old Amiga 1200 PSU that was making some strange high pitch noise when I tried to boot the amiga with the harddrive installed in it. I removed the harddrive and it booted fine with the PSU not emitting any detectable noise. However, when I have the 030 installed it sometimes reboots and shows a red "Software Error" screen. I tried removing the memory on the board, same effect. Sometimes it does not boot at all, just gives a black screen. Someone suggested the card had problems with 3.1 roms, but this amiga has only 3.0 roms installed. Does anyone have any apparent theories as to why it seems unstable? I don't have any other Amiga parts to cross-swap with to test a lot of things, so I'd really appreciate some sound input here so I'd know what to look for in order to try fix it. • LGA 1155 or LGA 2011? Which has a brighter future?

  I'd basically like to rehash this question, only 22 months later. The last system I built was in 2006, shortly after AMD came out with socket AM2. I was able to upgrade the processor on it 3 times and would love to do the same with my next computer. Since AMD seems to be lagging, I'm going for Intel this time. I've read that Intel changes chip sets all the time, so there's no safe bet. I also read (1 comment on 1 forum) that said LGA 2011 will have 8-core support, but LGA 1155 won't, which leads me to believe that LGA 2011 might be a better choice. Anyone have any good advice for me?

• Should i scrap my own leader board and go for the Facebook built in one?

  Currently I'm rolling my own score and leader board functionality in my FB canvas game. In my game, users can see what score they have, in addition I have a public leader board where everybody can see all scores from all other users.(I also have possibility for each user to set themselves as anonymous in the leader board, if desired) But now I started thinking; why do I have my own leader board system? Facebook has this scores API and I started play around with it. It, of course, integrates well with Facebook, scores and achievement showing up in the ticker and what not. But it seems that I can't let each user see a public leader board in much the same way I currently have it. But it do let the users see their friends score. Let's face it, this is all what FB is all about, right? Friends. So the question is; should i scrap my own leader board and go for the Facebook built in one (and skip the public part of it)? My gut feeling says yes, but I wanted to hear what other thinks.

Many of these operations need to know the context under which they are operation. (The context included the identity of the current user, culture information, etc. received from the caller.) For example, I have an API method that returns a list of announcements. The list is based on the current user's role and each announcement is localized to their culture. The API is a thin-facade that delegates to an Application Service in my domain layer. The Application Service method obviously needs to know the context of the current request/operation as another call to the same API from another user should result in a different list. Within this method, we also have logging that uses some of the context information so we a clear understanding of the context when the operation was performed (this is especially useful if something goes wrong.) While this is a contrived example, in the real world, my Application Services will coordinate operations with many collaborative components, any number of them also needing the context information. My choice is to pass the context to the Application Service which would then pass it with any calls to collaborators or have the IoC container satisfy the dependency the Application Service and any collaborators have on the context. I am wondering if it is considered good/bad, best practices/code smell, etc. if I pass the context object as a parameter to the domain methods or if injecting the context via an IoC container is preferred. (EDIT: I should mention that the context object is instantiated per-request.)

• Pass a single boolean from an Android App to a libgdx game

  I'm writing an Android application that needs to pass a single boolean into an Android game that I am also writing. The idea is that the user does something in the App which will affect how the game operates. This is tricky with LIBGDX since I need to get the bool value into the Java files of the game, but of course, you can't call Android specific things from within LIBGDX's main Java files. I tried using an intent but of course the same problem persists. I can get the boolean into the MainActivity.Java of the android output of the game, but can't pass it along any further since the android output and the main java files don't know about each other. I have seen a few tutorials that explain how to use set up an interface in the LIBGDX java files that can call android things. This seems like wild overkill for what I want to do. I've been trying to use Android's Shared Preferences with LIBGDX's Gdx.app.getPreferences, but I can't make it work. Anyhelp would be MUCH appreciated. I've set up two hello world applications. One is a standard Android app, with a single button that is supposed to write "true" into the shared preferences. The other is a standard LIBGDX hello world that is supposed to do nothing but check that bool when launched and if true display one image to the screen, if false, display a different one. • So it comes to PASS…

  How does your company gauge the benefit of attending a technical conference? What's the best change you made as a direct result of attendance? It's time again for the PASS Summit and I, like most people go with a set of general goals for enhancing technical knowledge; to learn more about PowerShell, to drill into SQL Server performance tuning techniques, and so on. Most will write up a brief report on the event for the rest of the team. Ideally, however, it will go a bit further than that; each conference should result in a specific improvement to one of your systems, or in the way you do your job. As co-editor of Simple-talk.com, and responsible for the majority of our SQL books, my “high level” goals don't vary much from conference to conference. I'm always on the lookout for good new authors. I target interesting new technologies and tools and try to learn more. I return with a list of actions, new articles to commission, and potential new authors. Three years ago, however, I started setting myself the goal of implementing “one new thing” after each conference. After one, I adopted Kanban for managing my workload, a technique that places strict limits on “work in progress” and makes the overall workload, and backlog, highly visible. After another I trialled a community book project. At PASS 2010, one of my general goals was to delve deeper into SQL Server transaction log mechanics, but on top of that, I set a specific goal of writing something useful on the topic. I started a Stairway series and, ultimately, it's turned into a book! If you're attending the PASS Summit this year, take some time to consider what specific improvement or change you'll implement as a result. Also, try to drop by the Red Gate booth (#101). During the Vendor event on Wednesday evening, Gail Shaw and I will be there to discuss, and hand out copies of the book. Cheers, Tony.
