• Shut down by pressing the power button twice

  I have set my laptop's power button to shut down the computer when it is pressed (Windows 7 x86). But I often hit the button accidentally, and it's a rare case that I'm able to actually prevent it from shutting down. I don't want to disable it though. Is there a way so that I get a confirmation whether I really want to shut down the computer (just like in Mac OS X Lion, where a confirmation appears when the power button is pressed)?. Is there some way to bring the same to Windows 7 (and 8)?

• PC doesn't POST with a certain model of PSU

  I have this PC with an Asus P5N32-E SLI motherboard and an Intel Q6600 CPU. I got a new RX-5300 PSU, but it didn't work. The motherboard power LED is on fine When I switch power on, the PC powers up briefly (0.5-1 sec) then shuts down From there on out when I switch power on, it stays on, all fans and components seem to be receiving power, but the motherboard won't POST. No video output, no PC speaker beeps, nothing If I turn the hard switch on the PSU off and then back on again, go to step 2; The PC turns on and then off immediately again, and on subsequent power-ups it stays on but won't POST I disconnected every component but the motherboard, CPU and PSU. Still nothing. I tried three other models of PSU on this PC, both of higher (600) and lower (<300) wattage than the 530 on the RX-5300 and they all work fine. At this point I was convinced the PSU was faulty so I returned it. When the replacement arrived, it behaved exactly the same. So two different units of RX-5300 both with the same symptoms, neither working with this motherboard + CPU. Yet, three other models of PSU work perfectly fine. The PC store couldn't reproduce my problem with the returned PSU. I tried resetting the CMOS with the jumper. I tried with both the 4 and 4+4 (with and without the extra +4 connected) CPU connectors (curiously the RX-5300 comes equipped with both). Could it be a statistical probability that I get two units of the same model of PSU that are faulty in the exact same manner? Could the RX-5300 model itself be somehow incompatible with this motherboard? I was under the impression that PSUs were pretty much universal so long as you have the wattage. Could the motherboard be broken in some such a way as to work with certain PSUs but not others? What's going on here?

• APC UPS-5000 Power off remote servers

  Hi there, I have a UPS connected via the serial port to a server using PowerChute Business Edition. If a power outage occurs I would like this server to start shutting down all other servers within the network. Is there dedicated software to do this? I was thinking of creating a command file which runs a .bat file to run shut down commands to each server (using PSExec). I can set PowerChute to run this command file when a power failure occurs. Is there not anything APC provide which has this functionality and is more efficient than writing a .bat file to do this? Thanks,

• Any reasonable UPS for a Desktop PC, just to shut it down?

  While I do have a surge protector to protect against overvoltage (hopefully), I have nothing against undervoltage. When a lightning storm hits, I had the lights flickering at some point. The PC continued to run, but it got me thinking of getting a UPS as a way to a) have a clean 120V/60Hz power source and b) have a way to shut down the PC in case something bad happens. I heard not all UPS' protect against power spikes, so I wonder if someone has a recommendation? It does not need to keep the PC on for a long time if the power goes out, it's good enough if it shuts down the PC after 5 minutes or so. There are 2 PCs connected. One is a Core i7-860 with a Radeon 5870 running Windows 7 Ultimate (so quite power hungry. It uses a 600W PSU but I have no measurements of the actual usage), the other one is a Windoes Home Server, running WHS/Windows Server 2003. Any recommendations in the low-price segment?

• How can I tell if my UPS is functioning properly or not for my PC?

  For the last two days, my Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) has failed to produce the actual back up. So, I charged it for 24hrs and again checked that when the power failed my PC was automatically shut down. But in the time of power no supply from ups bt .......is my ups is working properly or not else there is direct power. It will cause any harm to my pc. my questions are..... Is the UPS functioning properly or not? If not, then will it harm my pc? If it is functioning, will it regulate direct power to pc without any cause? Is my UPS battery not working? What should I do to make my UPS batteries last for at least a year? I am using FRONTECH UPS 600va (Warranty for both ups and battery is expired) I already changed the battery 8 months previously. Note from editor: Tried to make as much sense of this question as I could. I hope I didn't alter the meaning in any way.

In either scenario, you build plugins by ensuring your custom plugin follows this pattern: jQuery.fn.pluginName -- so assume I have a library: myLibrary = (function() { //my fancy javascript code return function() { //my return object }; }); How would fn be incorporated into the above myLibrary object to ensure that he resulting plugin is callable?   I'm not sure if 'architecture' is the correct term, but I've been looking for some articles online which talk about programming design and more about how best to use languages such as JavaScript in a code design sense rather than the actual syntax itself. I have found many websites but a lot seem to be very out dated, and I'm not sure what developments have taken place with JavaScript over the years so do not know how old is too old. If anybody could suggest some great websites, or maybe specific articles you think would be useful, that would be highly appreciated. I am a beginner programmer currently using JavaScript with XML and of course HTML & CSS, and I'm currently trying to get further into and learn more about web development.

• A good architecture is evil? Hardcode forever?

  I have worked in many companies. Most of all reached a big success in their field. Some times I found the code was written by owner or co-owner or the first developer of this company. It was strange from architectural point of view code or awful code styled, or hardcoded and so on. I know a couple of startups, that were grown up and were started from the "one night" code. Is it only way to get success to write code in this way? Why does a code written "on knee" but in time is better than delayed well thought-out one? What about future? Which way is the best: to write a good architecture, code and spend some more time at the startup or to write "fast" and hardcoded one that would be completely (partially) throw out (or maybe wouldn't) after some period of time (or never)?

• Getting out of my head

  (I put this on SO, but it got a couple close votes saying it belonged here instead...) I've spent the last year as a single person team developing a rich-client application (35,000+ LoC, for what it's worth). It's currently stable and in production. However, I know that my skills were rusty at the beginning of the project, so without a doubt there are major issues to the code. At this point, most of the issues are in architecture, structure, or interactions - the easy problems, even architecture/design problems, have already been weeded out. Unfortunately, I've spent so much time with this project that I'm having a hard time thinking outside of it - approaching it from a new perspective to see the flaws deeply buried or inherent in the design. How do I step outside my head and outside my code so I can get a fresh look at this code so I can make it better? Is this less of an issue than I think it is, or is this a problem for other people as well?

• Good floor planner program?

  I'm planning to have a house built. I want to draw up some sketches on the computer, so I am looking for a program that can help me do this. It doesn't have to be a professional architecture tool; in fact that would be too complicated just yet (but maybe later on, for the detailed work...?). A simpler tool would be better. Features should include such things as ability to draw and move walls (not just using simple boxes), calculate room/floor area, add windows and doors, and the like. That's why Inkscape or OOo Presentation won't do. On Windows, a friend would just download a cracked professional architecture tool but that is not what I want to do. Suggestions?

  Supposed you were asked in an interview "How would you implement Google Search?" How would you answer such a question? There might be resources out there that explain how some pieces in Google are implemented (BigTable, MapReduce, PageRank, ...), but that doesn't exactly fit in an interview. What overall architecture would you use, and how would you explain this in a 15-30 minute time span? I would start with explaining how to build a search engine that handles ~ 100k documents, then expand this via sharding to around 50M docs, then perhaps another architectural/technical leap. This is the 20,000 feet view. What I'd like is the details - how you would actually answer that in an interview. Which data structures would you use. What services/machines is your architecture composed of. What would a typical query latency be? What about failover / split brain issues? Etc...

  I have a homemade project combining with application and database. Today I'm using architecture N-tier. Totally I have 4 project in my solution in VS2010. The fourth project is a transaction layer that connect all the 3 project (one for presentation, business logic and database layer) in order to retrieve data from the database and all the way to present the data in presentation layer. Transaction layer contains entity framework 4 + customized class to carry data to the presentation layer. I always use LINQ to retrieve data in database layer. From my experience, everytime I use LINQ in relation with entity framework it always take a lot of time to retrieve data because what I believe is that my entity framework always has to reload everytime when I want to retrieve any data from the database. My question for you guys is: When you create your application connecting to a database, what architecture do you use? How do you retrieve the data from you application? Is it entity framework etc?

  I have read somewhere that ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) is SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) with specific constraints added. SOA is the abstract concept of combining discrete pieces of software and ROA is an implementation of SOA with all of the constraints of RESTful services applied to it: SOA = the concept ROA = the concept + specific implementation details I also had my share of posts saying that ROA is different than SOA, then simply fallback to statements like "ROA is REST" and "SOA is SOAP" and presenting the same more or less pertinent comparisons and differences between SOAP and REST. So just to clear up my confusion: Is ROA a specific form of doing SOA?

• Need some clarification on the ANSI/SPARC 3-tier database architecture.

  Hi there, I'm currently revising for a databases exam and looking over some past papers, but there's one question that I'm slightly unsure about and was wondering if someone could offer some assistance. "Describe EACH of the THREE levels of the ANSI SPARC 3 level architecture. Your answer should include the purpose of EACH of the schemas, the level of abstraction they provide and the software tools that would be used to access and support them." As I understand it (although please correct me if I'm wrong): the internal schema specifies the physical storage of the data; the conceptual schema specifies the structure of the database and the domains; and the external schemas are how the database is viewed by "users" (applications, etc.). As for the abstraction, I understand that the conceptual layer means that the physical data storage can be altered without the end user being affected, likewise the The bit that I'm not sure about is what tools are used to access and support each layer. Would the internal schema be handled by the DBMS, the conceptual schema handled by some sort of DDL interpreter and the external schema handled by a DML interpreter (or have I misunderstood what each level does)?   Let's just say that i want to create a cms + other online applications. I want them all to integrate into a central location, but they also have to be available seperately (not everyone want's more than the cms solution). Would i create a huge central application that contains all the database, which communicates through a webserice with the "standalone - integrated" modules? Or would i create them seperately and the only thing that the "central" application would do is syncing the information (eg. the cms and another solution can have the same tables (eg. clients or employees). Or do you have another idea? (i know i'm a little vague, but i can't "give" a lot of details because of work - contract). If someone has all the "packages" it should be possible for the central application to integrate all the modules at one place! Or if someone has more than 1 module, it should combine this on the website. What i thought is best, is that the central location contains only the users and their rights (eg. cms - all rights, ...), and the information get synced with every change. (module cms, adding a new client - store locally and send data to the central location, central location - send to modules = table clients updated everywhere) This way it is easy if someone only "bought" a module, they can sync it easily through the complete architecture. I hope i made myself clear!

• Why does Ubuntu (and other ubuntu based distros like lubuntu and linux mint) randomly shutdown on my laptop?

  I have a lenovo g555 laptop and whenever I try and boot a ubuntu based distro off a usb, it randomly shuts off my PC (Not like a normal shutdown with shutdown loading screen but a like a sudden hard power off). This problem occurs even if I have installed the distro on my harddrive. In the past I've been able to use the distro for 10 min or so before it would it would do this. Now with the latest distros, It randomly pwers off even before it has fully booted up. My hardware specs are on this website.
