• Jupiter in Ubuntu 13.10 (Laptop Overheating)

  I was wondering if Jupiter (Interface for display, power and device control) will work in Ubuntu 13.10, because my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C855D, AMD A6-4400M with Radeon HD Graphics running Ubuntu 13.04 x64) keeps overheating, I tried some other tools, like laptop-mode-tools or TLP, none of those work, not at all. Jupiter was the only option and it's supposedly discontinued, the version I'm using is being maintained by JoliCloud team, but they told me they're not sure if it will work with 13.10... If it doesn't work, I'm definitely not upgrading, since overheating is a major issue for me... Thanks in advance!

• How do you limit root partition disk access to allow drive to go into stanby mode?

  When there are no users on my system, I would like the hard disk to spindown to low-power state. I realize that this might not be 100% achievable for a straight 24 hours, but it seems reasonable that the system could remain idle for a few hours at a time when it is not in use. My system is headless and running a limited number of services. The primary services are: exim4, mythtv-backend, nfs, samba, cups, apt-cacher-ng Assume that drives are already enabled to go into standby mode. Also, its not acceptable to increase the write-back timeout, since my system is not on a UPS.

• Modify actions when battery is critically low?

  I am running ubuntu (not xubuntu!) and am using xfce4 on my laptop. When my laptop battery is critically low, ubuntu/xfce4 performs some action (perhaps hibernate?) which causes my laptop to shut down. However when I start it again, it never comes up. I don't even get BIOS or anything on the screen, it is completely black. The only way to get it back up is to take it apart, remove the internal cmos battery as well as the main battery, wait a few minutes, and put it back together. Obeviously this is not optimal. How do I disable all actions when the battery is critically low? I would rather have it run out of power, than ending up in this error condition. Thanks in advance. :)

• suspend not working

  I am running 13.10 on an ASUS 101-SE netbook. Under "power settings" I have selected suspend when inactive for 10 minutes and suspend when lid is closed. I get a warning when inactive that the computer will suspend due to inactivity, but it does not suspend either from that condition or when closing the lid. I seem to be getting multiple suspend messages as I need to click "cancel" or "OK" many times to get the error window to close when it has been inactive for some time. Anyone have any tips? Thank you.

• Laptop resumes from suspend while lid is closed

  I have a Dell Studio 15 and I am running Ubuntu 10.10. When I close my lid or select the suspend option, the machine suspends as indicated by the slowly pulsing power indicator. I'll put the machine in my bag and after a while it seems that the machine resumes, at least I think. When ever I go to get it, it's overheated and the system cannot resume. I am guessing that the processor resets in this overheat condition, but heat is still generated. This has happened about three times and I'm getting worried that I'll end up damaging the machine. How can I diagnose why the system is resuming from suspend? Can I force it to never resume from suspend if the lid is down?

• How do I prevent an external monitor from shutting off when closing my laptop lid?

  I've seen this issue on previous versions of Ubuntu, but not on 12.04 and some of those are resolved bugs, so I'm asking again. I've set up power management so that, when plugged in, my laptop does nothing when the lid is closed. I do this so that I can use as a desktop with my external monitor with the screen closed and the laptop scurried away from my desktop. I tried turning off the laptop monitor to see if that made a difference, but it doesn't. The problem is that closing the lid still shuts off my external monitor. What can I do to prevent this?

  Related: How can I tell Ubuntu to do nothing when I close my laptop lid? I have my laptop set to activate standby when I close the lid. I want to keep this as the default for both battery and AC power. But occasionally I want to close the lid without triggering standby (eg. while just listening to audio). Is there someway I can tell Ubuntu, "I'm going to close the lid now. Don't stand by this time", without altering the defaults (because I almost always forget to change them back).

• Ubuntu reports low battery capacity on my Dell Vostro

  I have a Dell Vostro 1500. Before I wiped Windows XP off my hard drive in 2009, I had a full ~7 hrs battery capacity. I installed Ubuntu 9, and the capacity immediately dropped to about 27% (and has since decreased to about 11%). I couldn't figure out what to do, so I've just lived with the 20-30 minute battery life ever since. I upgraded to Ubuntu 10, and the issue remained. I wiped my hard drive clean again and installed Ubuntu 11, and the issue still remains. I tried what they told me in the forum here, but it didn't do anything. Is it possible for a battery to suddenly lose most of its capacity?? Or is there a bug in the power management software?

• CPU frequancy stuck at 1.20 GHz using TLP?

  I have installed TLP for power optimization on Ubuntu 13.10. Instructions I start computer its running fine I can change the CPU frequencies to whatever I want, but after some time it stuck on minimum frequency 1.20 GHz, I cant change that to anything else. I have tried to stop it by using sudo tlp stop but it doesn't stop. Tried even to kill its process sudo killall tlp but it seems they have a different name of process of that so i am not sure what to do now. I reported to the linrunner but cant seem to find a solution

• Energy saving with two batteries (Gigabyte S1080 and similar)

  my today question is: how do I manage a tablet (Gigabyte 1080) with an additional battery in Ubuntu ? The control bar shows two separate batteries but starts to suck all the energy from the secundary battery, not leaving any power in it and ruining it (if I don't remove it earlier), and then starts with the primary battery. • Xubuntu fails to stay awake when the machine is under load

  I have the following problem with a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04: I set up power management options so as to send the machine to sleep after it's been idle for a while. My intention was to have it finish some lengthy numbercrunching and then fall asleep late at night when nobody's present to shut it down. What actually happened, however, is that the machine goes to sleep whenever the desktop session has been idle for the specified amount of time, and it does not seem to care at all about CPU load, and I had to disable sleep altogether. Is there any way to fix this?

  I am using a HP Pavilion and Ubuntu 11.10. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year. Recently (in Nov or there about), I noticed my battery never charges fully no matter how long it has been plugged in. I thought it was a problem with the power pack. However, after changing it, the problem is still persisting. I upgraded to 11.10 form 11.04 at about the same time so I do not know if this is a software or hardware issue. How do I solve this?   After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10, my battery life has decreased dramatically. There was a bug in Ubuntu 10.10 where the Load Balancing Tick and Kworker would interrupt and wake-up the cpu too much, and this wasn't normal. I applied a gnome-power-manager fix back then, following this question, which leads to this bug report, and battery life increased to 3.5 hours. I'm getting around two hours of battery-life in Natty, and calling Intel's powertop reveals that this bug is back. Is there a fix for Natty yet? I have a Core 2 Duo ULV, Thinkpad Edge 13

• suspend error on 14.04 LTS

  I've looked around and seems like various problems around suspend are wide spreaded for 14.04 release, nevertheless I haven't seen exactly my problem reported, nor my laptop model mentioned. So, the problem. When I press sleep button system seems to be going into suspend, i.e. screen goes black, it stops responding on the keyboard and wireless LEDs turn off, however the power LED doesn't go into suspend state and CPU fan also keeps spinning. But unlike the other problem described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435 when I close the lid and reopen it - system wakes up and goes back to normal locked screen state, so reboot is not needed.   I'm having a ton of trouble getting Suspend to work with my laptop. I want to start using Ubuntu but this is a pretty important aspect since I take my laptop with me everywhere. Anyways, I wanted to narrow down the possible problem with my laptop. What happens is that when I suspend my computer, within seconds, it just boots back up. I have changed /proc/acpi/wakeup to where everything is disabled but that did nothing. Is there a way where I can disable every feature from waking up the laptop except the power button?

• Linksys WAP54G v3.1 no access, power and link LED solid

  I'm managing the Network of a small enterprise. A Linksys WAP54G v3.1 used to provide the WiFi network. I was called, because the device did not provide a WiFi network anymore. I first of all tried to ping the device via LAN, but there was no reaction. I've frequently reconnected the AP to the mains and always the POWER and the LINK LED keep solid, even if no network cable is connected. What I've done yet: Reset as documented: Pressed the RESET button for 10 seconds. After that I have tried to access the AP with a direct cable connection to my computer, that I've set to a static ip of 192.168.1.240, but i got no ping response on the default IP 192.168.1.245. Furthermore ipconfig reports "media disconnected". More complex reset method as described here http://bruceshankle.blogspot.de/2005/12/how-to-reset-linksys-wap54g.html as well had no effect. also tried to ping 192.168.1.1 without success Tried this method: http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/networking/threads/142437/linksys-wireless-access-point-problem#post680245 but there was no ping response when powering up. As well the tftp transfer timed out Finally tried to short pin 15 and 16 of the flash chip on the bottom side of the AP mainboard while booting to provoke a Checksum error. This should lead to the possibility to upload a firmware with tftp, as the AP stops booting and waits for a tftp connection on 192.168.1.1. But I've had no success. As well i've put pin 15 and 16 to ground while booting, also without an effect. After all that I still can't ping the AP, ipconfig still tells me "media disconnected". The POWER and LINK LED are solid. I would appreciate your answers

• Windows XP - Power surge on hub port

  Since last few weeks I constantly get this error, as status bar balloon: Power Surge on Hub Port - A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. Due to this now I am unable to access any USB devices properly, they get disconnected intermittently. I did quite a few things to resolve this problem, firstly obviously through the Windows help. I even tried all the things told on the Microsoft website(which essentially says is to check and update the driver) but in vain. One suggestion, I found when I google'd was to disable the USB2 controller through the Device Manager and since at every startup the System configuration comes up complaining that it has been changed etc.(On that same site it is mentioned to ignore this message.) But after everything I still cant solve this problem. Any help is much appreciated. The system is installed with Windows XP service Pack 3 and all the updates till last month. Please let me know if any other hardware info is required. **UPDATE** My laptop is about 5 years old now, its an HP with Celeron 1.4G processor. Windows XP SP3 installed. All latest windows updates installed. 2 USB ports available. BIOS is HP 68DTD ver F.0A Do I need to update my BIOS from somewhere ? or is this a hardware problem altogether?

  I'm making an open source C# library for other developers to use. My key concern is ease of use. This means using intuitive names, intuitive method usage and such. This is the first time I've done something with other people in mind, so I'm really concerned about the quality of the architecture. Plus, I wouldn't mind learning a thing or two. :) I have three classes: Downloader, Parser and Movie I was thinking that it would be best to only expose the Movie class of my library and have Downloader and Parser remain hidden from invocation. • What is wrong with those crontabs?

  I want my projectors to Power On before the mall opens, and Power Off when the mall closes. So I created crontab entries (that I placed in /etc/cron.d/mall), but today (Thu Nov 22 18:58:29 EST 2012 is the current date on that server), the power-off.sh script got executed at 17:20 (see syslog excerpt below). Being Thu, Nov. 22, I would have expected the power-off.sh script to be executed at 21:20, per the 4th crontab line below. Why did power-off.sh execute at 17:20? What is wrong with my crontab entries?
