  • How to properly remove URL's from Google's index?

    - by ElHaix
On some of our sites, we now have several thousand pages that dilute our website's keyword density. The website is an MVC site with SEO routing. If I submit a new sitemap with say only the 2000 or so pages that we want indexed, even though navigating to the diluting pages still works, will Google re-index the site with only those 2000 pages, dropping the superfluous ones? For example, I want to keep roughly 2000 of the following: www.mysite.com/some-search-term-1/some-good-keywords www.mysite.com/some-search-term-2/some-more-good-keywords And remove several thousand of the following that have already been indexed. www.mysite.com/some-search-term-xx/some-poor-keywords www.mysite.com/some-search-term-xx/some-poor-more-keywords These pages are not actually "removed" as navigating to these URL's still renders a page. Even though there are potentially hundreds of thousands of pages, I only want say 2000 to be re-indexed and retained. The others removed (without having to do these manually). Thanks.

  • How to properly URL/domain forward

    - by NRGdallas
No clue on a title for this, someone feel free to suggest an edit. I have a client that has a website. He owns around 200 domains, and wants each domain to contain content from the main website. The header, footer, and navigation bars will remain the same for each domain, but the actual page content will vary (obviously duplicate content issues, open to suggestions) He wants each individual page to be its own separate domain, rather than a url within the main domain. (page1.com page2.com etc - NOT site.com/page1.html, however the file is actually hosted at site.com/page1.html - all links will direct to site.com/whatever accordingly) What would be the best place to start reading / learning on how to do this, and what concerns/considerations should be taken into mind?

  • Tracking URL Goals to an external site from a landing page

    - by Arel
I have a landing page promoting an iOS app. The page is at vitogo.com. I've set up a goal for When a user clicks on the link to go to iTunes to download the app. I set up a URL destination goal in the property for the site, and can see the goal set up in the reports section. The problem is it isn't tracking any clicks. I've had the goal set up for a while now, and it hasn't tracked anything. Thanks for the help!

  • url mod_rewrite

    - by Pritam Borkar
I had an e-commerce website hosted on http://mydomain.com/beta for more than a year, eventually I decided to move the website to root http://mydomain.com I had done quite a lot of link postings to forums etc, when my site used to be hosted in the sub-dir /beta . Is there any way to do a mod_rewrite by which all the old links that I have posted do not return as broken links since now longer the site is hosted in /beta and is now hosted on the site root. I did read that mod_rewrite can help resolve this issue, but also read about that this has to be done with care. Just a tip that this site is using Friendl URL.

  • Problem downloading .exe file from Amazon S3 with a signed URL in IE

    - by Joe Corkery
I have a large collection of Windows exe files which are being stored/distributed using Amazon S3. We use signed URLs to control access to the files and this works great except in one case when trying to download a .exe file using Internet Explorer (version 8). It works just fine in Firefox. It also works fine if you don't use a signed URL (but that is not an option). What happens is that the IE downloader changes the name from 'myfile.exe' to 'myfile[1]' and Windows no longer recognizes it as an executable. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Launching a URL from an OOB Silverlight Application

So I'm working on this code browser mostly to help me with my fading memory. In the app I want to be able to launch a url. So I do my normal thing and put a line of code that looks like this:System.Windows.Browser.HtmlPage.Window.Navigate(new Uri(ThisURI), "_blank");I was agast when I realized that this didn't work, for that matter it didn't even blow... grr... but with a bit of research I found that the hyper link button worked so a ended up making a little class like this:public class MyHyperLink...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Getting the URL to the Content Type Hub Programmatically in SharePoint 2010

    - by Damon
    Many organizations use the content-type hub to manage content-types in their SharePoint 2010 environment.  As a developer in these types of organizations, you may one day find yourself in need of getting the URL of the content type hub programmatically.  Here is a quick snippet that demonstrates how to do it fairly painlessly: public static Uri GetContentTypeHubUri(SPSite site) {     TaxonomySession session = new TaxonomySession(site);     return Session.DefaultSiteCollectionTermStore         .ContentTypePublishingHub; }

  • SEO Impact of using Responsive Design and the serving of different content on the same URL

    - by bmenekl
We are currently working on redesigning our site and making it responsive. It is a search intensive site with complex functionality, a lot of search filters and a lot of content. Our mobile versions of certain pages need to hide some functionality (i.e. search filters) that exists in the desktop version and/or content (mainly blocks of text that are not necessary or are increasing page load in mobile devices). My questions is this: does the situation of having the same URL (responsive site) serving slightly different content (text and/or search filters) for certain pages in different devices affect our SEO (SERPs or otherwise)?

  • Length of Page Title, URL, Meta Description and total number of links on a page

    - by MJWadmin
We've been examining a number of different SEO tools recently. Several of these tell us that some of our page title's, urls and meta descriptions are too long. We've also been told that some of our pages have too many links on them. I guess our first question is - is any of that feedback true! Can URL's etc actually be too long and if so how much does this affect ranking? Secondly can you have too many links on a page and if so, how many is too many? Thanks in advance...

  • RewriteRule for URL Subdirectory Root

    - by JYerdon
Have not found this in my searches on SE. I need this scenario to work: • User visits someurl.com/news/folder or someurl.com/news/somefolder/, they get redirected to someurl.com/somefolder. • If the user visits JUST someurl.com/news or /news/, they are allowed through to visit /news. Here is my current rule: RewriteRule ^news/(.*) /$1 [NC,R=301,L] How do I make it allow the second bullet point? First seems to work with no issues. Thanks all! POST UPDATE I have got the code RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^news RewriteRule ^/news news/ [NC,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/news/(.)$ RewriteRule ^news/(.) /$1 [NC,R=301,L] BUT - it doesn't allow me to go to the URL something.com/news/ Any thoughts?

  • What is the RFC complicant and working regular expression to check if a string is a valid URL

    - by bestis
There is question by the almost the same name already: What is the best regular expression to check if a string is a valid URL I don't understand this stackoverflow. It seems like I need reputation to comment an answer. As I don't have it, I don't know how to tell/ask that the proposed solution doesn't seem to work. So I'm forced to make a new question and ask for the solution this way? But that regexp seems to fail in input which has IPv6 address in it: For example facebook's IPv6 address: http://2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c::3/ Also link to localhost fails: http://::1/ Or is PHP to blame? /** * Validate URL - RFC 3987 (IRI) * * http://stackoverflow.com/questions/161738/what-is-the-best-regular-expression-to-check-if-a-string-is-a-valid-url * * @param string $str_url * @return boolean compilicant and working regexp? ps. If you close this, please then tell me how this situation should be handled? I don't think that the answer is, just earn your reputation. Who wants to do that if they cannot even tell that some proposed solution isn't working correctly. pps. "we're sorry, but as a spam prevention mechanism, new users can only post a maximum of one hyperlink. Earn more than 10 reputation to post more hyperlinks.". Oh C'mon, I'm fine with plain text :D
