• How did Perl gain a reputation for being a write-only language?

    - by Andrew Grimm
How did Perl gain a reputation (deserved, undeserved, or used to be deserved, no longer so) of being a "write only language"? Was it The syntax of the language Specific features that were available in the language Specific features not being available in the language (or at least old versions of it) The kind of tasks Perl was being used for The kind of people who use Perl (people who aren't full-time programmers) Criticism from people committed to another language Something else? Background: I'd like to know if some aspects that gave Perl the reputation of being write-only also apply to other languages (specifically ruby). Disclaimer: I recognise that Perl doesn't force people to do write-only code (can any language?), and that you can write bad code in any language.

  • Alias for EditorAttribute

    - by Johan
Is there a way to create a shorter alias for an EditorAttribute? Instead of: [EditorAttribute(typeof<ColorPickerDialogPropertyValueEditor>, typeof<DialogPropertyValueEditor>)] public Color4 Color { get; set; } I would like to write: using ColorPicker = EditorAttribute(typeof<ColorPickerDialogPropertyValueEditor>, typeof<DialogPropertyValueEditor>) [ColorPicker] public Color4 Color { get; set; } Unfortunately the EditorAttribute class is sealed so I cannot inherit it.

  • Populate properties decorated with an attribute

    - by PUT
    Are there any frameworks that assist me with this: (thinking that perhaps StructureMap can help me) Whenever I create a new instance of "MyClass" or any other class that inherits from IMyInterface I want all properties decorated with [MyPropertyAttribute] to be populated with values from a database or some other data storage using the property Name in the attribute. public class MyClass : IMyInterface { [MyPropertyAttribute("foo")] public string Foo { get; set; } } [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Property)] public sealed class MyPropertyAttribute : System.Attribute { public string Name { get; private set; } public MyPropertyAttribute(string name) { Name = name; } }

  • C# working with decorated members

    - by Ronnie Overby
Take this class for example: public class Applicant : UniClass<Applicant> { [Key] public int Id { get; set; } [Field("X.838.APP.SSN")] public string SSN { get; set; } [Field("APP.SORT.LAST.NAME")] public string FirstName { get; set; } [Field("APP.SORT.FIRST.NAME")] public string LastName { get; set; } [Field("X.838.APP.MOST.RECENT.APPL")] public int MostRecentApplicationId { get; set; } } How would I go about getting all of the properties that are decorated with the field attribute, get their types, and then assign a value to them?

  • jQuery: modify href attribute for first level list only

    - by bloggerious
I'm a noob in jQuery and have stuck at this. I have the following HTML code output from a PHP page:

Lifestyle

Entertainment

Technology

Gadgets

Hardware

Sports

Design

Web Design

Adobe Photoshop

Graphics and Print

What's the correct jQuery code so that I can modify the href attribute for the first-level list only? Basically, I want to change the href of Technology and Design to be "#" but will not change the href of Web Design which is already on second-level list. More Info: In the code above, if list has subcategories, then it has the class has_child, whether it's on first-level or not. So I want only the first-level list which has class has_child to be modified the href to "#" I can't alter output anymore because it's in the PHP code. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Rails find_or_create by more than one attribute?

    - by tybro0103
There is a handy dynamic attribute in active-record called find_or_create_by: Model.find_or_create_by_<attribute>(:<attribute> => "") But what if I need to find_or_create by more than one attribute? Say I have a model to handle a M:M relationship between Group and Member called GroupMember. I could have many instances where member_id = 4, but I don't ever want more than once instance where member_id = 4 and group_id = 7. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to do something like this: GroupMember.find_or_create(:member_id => 4, :group_id => 7) I realize there may be better ways to handle this, but I like the convenience of the idea of find_or_create.

  • NSString sizeWithAttributes: Inaccuracy

    - by dave-gennel
I want to know the width of an NSString displayed on the screen in pixels. So I can fit an NSTextField its bounds to be exactly the length of the string itself. So I used IB's "Label" NSTextField and for those who don't know what I mean, I got a label with title "Label", font "Lucida Grande 13px", not selectable, not editable, regular size, no background and according to IB its width is 38px wide. If I want to get its width programatically I use [@"Label" sizeWithAttributes: [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObject: [NSFont fontWithName: @"Lucida Grande" size: 13] forKey: NSFontAttributeName]].width Which will give me 33.293457 . So that's about 5 px of the real width..

  • Object validator - is this good design?

    - by neo2862
I'm working on a project where the API methods I write have to return different "views" of domain objects, like this: namespace View.Product { public class SearchResult : View { public string Name { get; set; } public decimal Price { get; set; } } public class Profile : View { public string Name { get; set; } public decimal Price { get; set; } [UseValidationRuleset("FreeText")] public string Description { get; set; } [SuppressValidation] public string Comment { get; set; } } } These are also the arguments of setter methods in the API which have to be validated before storing them in the DB. I wrote an object validator that lets the user define validation rulesets in an XML file and checks if an object conforms to those rules: [Validatable] public class View { [SuppressValidation] public ValidationError[] ValidationErrors { get { return Validator.Validate(this); } } } public static class Validator { private static Dictionary<string, Ruleset> Rulesets; static Validator() { // read rulesets from xml } public static ValidationError[] Validate(object obj) { // check if obj is decorated with ValidatableAttribute // if not, return an empty array (successful validation) // iterate over the properties of obj // - if the property is decorated with SuppressValidationAttribute, // continue // - if it is decorated with UseValidationRulesetAttribute, // use the ruleset specified to call // Validate(object value, string rulesetName, string FieldName) // - otherwise, get the name of the property using reflection and // use that as the ruleset name } private static List<ValidationError> Validate(object obj, string fieldName, string rulesetName) { // check if the ruleset exists, if not, throw exception // call the ruleset's Validate method and return the results } } public class Ruleset { public Type Type { get; set; } public Rule[] Rules { get; set; } public List<ValidationError> Validate(object property, string propertyName) { // check if property is of type Type // if not, throw exception // iterate over the Rules and call their Validate methods // return a list of their return values } } public abstract class Rule { public Type Type { get; protected set; } public abstract ValidationError Validate(object value, string propertyName); } public class StringRegexRule : Rule { public string Regex { get; set; } public StringRegexRule() { Type = typeof(string); } public override ValidationError Validate(object value, string propertyName) { // see if Regex matches value and return // null or a ValidationError } } Phew... Thanks for reading all of this. I've already implemented it and it works nicely, and I'm planning to extend it to validate the contents of IEnumerable fields and other fields that are Validatable. What I'm particularly concerned about is that if no ruleset is specified, the validator tries to use the name of the property as the ruleset name. (If you don't want that behavior, you can use [SuppressValidation].) This makes the code much less cluttered (no need to use [UseValidationRuleset("something")] on every single property) but it somehow doesn't feel right. I can't decide if it's awful or awesome. What do you think? Any suggestions on the other parts of this design are welcome too. I'm not very experienced and I'm grateful for any help. Also, is "Validatable" a good name? To me, it sounds pretty weird but I'm not a native English speaker.

  • Best Practice: Access form elements by HTML id or name attribute?

    - by seth
As any seasoned JavaScript developer knows, there are many (too many) ways to do the same thing. For example, say you have a text field as follows: There are many way to access this in JavaScript: [1] document.forms[0].elements[0]; [2] document.myForm.foo; [3] document.getElementById('foo'); [4] document.getElementById('myForm').foo; ... and so on ... Methods [1] and [3] are well documented in the Mozilla Gecko documentation, but neither are ideal. [1] is just too general to be useful and [3] requires both an id and a name (assuming you will be posting the data to a server side language). Ideally, it would be best to have only an id attribute or a name attribute (having both is somewhat redundant, especially if the id isn't necessary for any css, and increases the likelihood of typos, etc). [2] seems to be the most intuitive and it seems to be widely used, but I haven't seen it referenced in the Gecko documentation and I'm worried about both forwards compatibility and cross browser compatiblity (and of course I want to be as standards compliant as possible). So what's best practice here? Can anyone point to something in the DOM documentation or W3C specification that could resolve this? Note I am specifically interested in a non-library solution (jQuery/Prototype).

  • preg_match_all to parse an xml-like attribute string

    - by Rob
I have a string like so: option_alpha="value" option_beta="some other value" option_gamma="X" ...etc. I'm using this to parse them into name & value pairs: preg_match_all("/([a-z0-9_]+)\s*=\s*[\"\'](.+?)[\"\']/is", $var_string, $matches) Which works fine, unless it encounters an empty attribute value: option_alpha="value" option_beta="" option_gamma="X" What have I done wrong in my regex?
