  • .NET Threading : How to wait for other thread to finish some task

    - by Alex Ilyin
Assume I have method void SomeMethod(Action callback) This method does some work in background thread and then invokes callback. The question is - how to block current thread until callback is called ? There is an example bool finished = false; SomeMethod(delegate{ finished = true; }); while(!finished) Thread.Sleep(); But I'm sure there should be better way

  • Update View at runtime in Android

    - by seretur
The example is pretty straightforward: i want to let the user know about what the app is doing by just showing a text (canvas.drawText()). Then, my first message appears, but not the other ones. I mean, i have a "setText" method but it doesn't updates. onCreate(Bundle bundle) { super.onCreate(bundle); setContentView(splash); // splash is the view class loadResources(); splash.setText("this"); boundWebService(); splash.setText("that"): etc(); splash.setText("so on"); } The view's text drawing works by doing just a drawText in onDraw();, so setText changes the text but doesn't show it. Someone recommended me replacing the view with a SurfaceView, but it would be alot of trouble for just a couple of updates, SO... how the heck can i update the view dinamically at runtime? It should be quite simple, just showing a text for say 2 seconds and then the main thread doing his stuff and then updating the text... Thanks! Update: I tried implementing handler.onPost(), but is the same story all over again. Let me put you the code: package coda.tvt; import android.app.Activity; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.graphics.Paint; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.View; import android.widget.TextView; import android.widget.Toast; public class ThreadViewTestActivity extends Activity { Thread t; Splash splash; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); splash = new Splash(this); t = new Thread(splash); t.start(); splash.setTextow("OA"); try { Thread.sleep(4000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { } splash.setTextow("LALA"); } } And: public class Splash implements Runnable { Activity activity; final Handler myHandler = new Handler(); public Splash(Activity activity) { this.activity=activity; } @Override public void run() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } public synchronized void setTextow(final String textow) { // Wrap DownloadTask into another Runnable to track the statistics myHandler.post(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { TextView t = (TextView)activity.findViewById(R.id.testo); t.setText(textow); t.invalidate(); } }); } } Although splash is in other thread, i put a sleep on the main thread, i use the handler to manage UI and everything, it doesn't changes a thing, it only shows the last update.

  • Php on windows and blocks

    - by zerkms
My development PC has windows installed. And I've experienced weird php behaviour: <?php file_put_contents('c:/q', microtime(1) . "\r\n", FILE_APPEND); sleep(10); When I run this script in browser simultaneously in two different tabs I get such results 1294713622.125 1294713632.2188 which obviously is not what I expected, although in CLI everything is fine. So the question: what can block execution? (session.auto_start is Off)

  • Wait set time for user input C# console app

    - by Marlon
For a Console app, I need to know how to wait at set amount of time (about 10 seconds), for a user to input a key or set of keys, before proceeding with an 'auto run' portion of the application. This is bugging me because I can't quite figure out how the timer works, or threading.sleep, what should I use? Been googling all day.

  • how to cancel an awaiting task c#

    - by user1748906
I am trying to cancel a task awaiting for network IO using CancellationTokenSource, but I have to wait until TcpClient connects: try { while (true) { token.Token.ThrowIfCancellationRequested(); Thread.Sleep(int.MaxValue); //simulating a TcpListener waiting for request } } any ideas ? Secondly, is it OK to start each client in a separate task ?

  • Thread won't stop when I want it to? (Java)

    - by Stuart
I have a thread in my screen recording application that won't cooperate: package recorder; import java.awt.AWTException; import java.awt.Insets; import java.io.IOException; import javax.swing.JFrame; public class RepeatThread extends Thread { boolean stop; public volatile Thread recordingThread; JFrame frame; int count = 0; RepeatThread( JFrame myFrame ) { stop = false; frame = myFrame; } public void run() { while( stop == false ) { int loopDelay = 33; // 33 is approx. 1000/30, or 30 fps long loopStartTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); Insets insets = frame.getInsets(); // Get the shape we're recording try { ScreenRecorder.capture( frame.getX() + insets.left, frame.getY() + insets.top, frame.getWidth() - ( insets.left + insets.right ), frame.getHeight() - ( insets.top + insets.bottom ) ); } catch( AWTException e1 ) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } catch( IOException e1 ) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } // Add another picture long loopEndTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); int loopTime = (int )( loopEndTime - loopStartTime ); if( loopTime < loopDelay ) { try { sleep( loopDelay - loopTime ); // If we have extra time, // sleep } catch( Exception e ) { } // If something interrupts it, I don't give a crap; just // ignore it } } } public void endThread() { stop = true; count = 0; ScreenRecorder.reset(); // Once I get this annoying thread to work, I have to make the pictures // into a video here! } } It's been bugging me for ages. It periodically takes screenshots to the specified area. When you start recording, it hides (decativates) the window. On a Mac, when you give an application focus, any hidden windows will activate. In my class WListener (which I have confirmed to work), I have: public void windowActivated(WindowEvent e) { if(ScreenRecorder.recordingThread != null) { ScreenRecorder.recordingThread.endThread(); } } So what SHOULD happen is, the screenshot-taking thread stops when he clicks on the application. However, I must be brutally screwing something up, because when the thread is running, it won't even let the window reappear. This is my first thread, so I expected a weird problem like this. Do you know what's wrong?

  • Streaming HTTP response, flushing to the browser

    - by synic
I've got a view like the following: from django.views.decorators.http import condition def stream(): for i in range(0, 40): yield " " * 1024 yield "%d" % i time.sleep(1) @condition(etag_func=None): def view(request): return HttpResponse(stream(), mimetype='text/html') However, it definitely doesn't seem to be streaming at all. All the data is dumped at once, at the end, after about 40 seconds. How can I get it to flush correctly?

  • PHP: Prevent a function from returning value?

    Hi everybody, How could I make sure that the startProcess(); function is being called, but without halting the execution for myFunction(). I'll guess that there's a way to call a function and prevent it from returning it's value to thereby accomplishing this? Pseudo-code: function myFunction() { startProcess(); return $something; } function startProcess() { sleep(5); // Do stuff that user doesn't should have to wait for. }

  • How do I determine if my controller is in IDE or AHCI mode in Linux?

    - by philcolbourn
I have an old MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) - but I suspect an answer would apply to many MacBook Pros. It has an Intel IDE/SATA controller (ICH8M/ICH8M-E). I have installed a patched MBR that is supposed to put my controller into AHCI mode. It does this by setting some controller port value that I don't understand. This seems to work as I get this from lspci: 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 03) Now most, perhaps all, sites that provide a solution (enabling AHCI) suggest that after a sleep/wake cycle that a controller will revert to IDE mode due to how Apple support Windows. They recommend disabling sleep. From author of patchedcode.bin I think Enabling AHCI for Windows on MacBooks NB: I do not have bootcamp installed and I do not have Windows installed. Is there a way to prove that my controller is in IDE or AHCI mode? • Apache doesn't run multiple requests

    - by Reinderien
    I'm currently running this simple Python CGI script to test rudimentary IPC: #!/usr/bin/python -u import cgi, errno, fcntl, os, os.path, sys, time print("""Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 <!doctype html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <title>IPC test</title> </head> <body> """) ftempname = '/tmp/ipc-messages' master = not os.path.exists(ftempname) if master: fmode = 'w' else: fmode = 'r' print('<p>Opening file</p>') sys.stdout.flush() ftemp = open(ftempname, fmode) print('<p>File opened</p>') if master: print('<p>Operating as master</p>') sys.stdout.flush() for i in range(10): print('<p>' + str(i) + '</p>') sys.stdout.flush() time.sleep(1) ftemp.close() os.remove(ftempname) else: print('<p>Operating as a slave</p>') ftemp.close() print(""" </body> </html>""") The 'server-push' portion works; that is, for the first request, I do see piecewise updates. However, while the first request is being serviced, subsequent requests are not started, only to be started after the first request has finished. Any ideas on why, and how to fix it? Edit: I see the same non-concurrent behaviour with vanilla PHP, running this: <!doctype html> <html lang="en"> <!-- $Id: $--> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <title>IPC test</title> </head> <body> <p> <?php function echofl($str) { echo $str . "</b>\n"; ob_flush(); flush(); } define('tempfn', '/tmp/emailsync'); if (file_exists(tempfn)) $perms = 'r+'; else $perms = 'w'; assert($fsync = fopen(tempfn, $perms)); assert(chmod(tempfn, 0600)); if (!flock($fsync, LOCK_EX | LOCK_NB, $wouldblock)) { assert($wouldblock); $master = false; } else $master = true; if ($master) { echofl('Running as master.'); assert(fwrite($fsync, 'content') != false); assert(sleep(5) == 0); assert(flock($fsync, LOCK_UN)); } else { echofl('Running as slave.'); echofl(fgets($fsync)); } assert(fclose($fsync)); echofl('Done.'); ?> </p> </body> </html>

  • Call to daemon in a /etc/init.d script is blocking, not running in background

    - by tony
I have a Perl script that I want to daemonize. Basically this perl script will read a directory every 30 seconds, read the files that it finds and then process the data. To keep it simple here consider the following Perl script (called synpipe_server, there is a symbolic link of this script in /usr/sbin/) : #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; use warnings; my $continue = 1; $SIG{'TERM'} = sub { $continue = 0; print "Caught TERM signal\n"; }; $SIG{'INT'} = sub { $continue = 0; print "Caught INT signal\n"; }; my $i = 0; while ($continue) { #do stuff print "Hello, I am running " . ++$i . "\n"; sleep 3; } So this script basically prints something every 3 seconds. Then, as I want to daemonize this script, I've also put this bash script (also called synpipe_server) in /etc/init.d/ : #!/bin/bash # synpipe_server : This starts and stops synpipe_server # # chkconfig: 12345 12 88 # description: Monitors all production pipelines # processname: synpipe_server # pidfile: /var/run/synpipe_server.pid # Source function library. . /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions pname="synpipe_server" exe="/usr/sbin/synpipe_server" pidfile="/var/run/${pname}.pid" lockfile="/var/lock/subsys/${pname}" [ -x $exe ] || exit 0 RETVAL=0 start() { echo -n "Starting $pname : " daemon ${exe} RETVAL=$? PID=$! echo [ $RETVAL -eq 0 ] && touch ${lockfile} echo $PID > ${pidfile} } stop() { echo -n "Shutting down $pname : " killproc ${exe} RETVAL=$? echo if [ $RETVAL -eq 0 ]; then rm -f ${lockfile} rm -f ${pidfile} fi } restart() { echo -n "Restarting $pname : " stop sleep 2 start } case "$1" in start) start ;; stop) stop ;; status) status ${pname} ;; restart) restart ;; *) echo "Usage: $0 {start|stop|status|restart}" ;; esac exit 0 So, (if I have well understood the doc for daemon) the Perl script should run in the background and the output should be redirected to /dev/null if I execute : service synpipe_server start But here is what I get instead : [root@master init.d]# service synpipe_server start Starting synpipe_server : Hello, I am running 1 Hello, I am running 2 Hello, I am running 3 Hello, I am running 4 Caught INT signal [ OK ] [root@master init.d]# So it starts the Perl script but runs it without detaching it from the current terminal session, and I can see the output printed in my console ... which is not really what I was expecting. Moreover, the PID file is empty (or with a line feed only, no pid returned by daemon). Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong ? EDIT : maybe I should say that I am on a Red Hat machine. Scientific Linux SL release 5.4 (Boron) Would it do the job if instead of using the daemon function, I use something like : nohup ${exe} >/dev/null 2>&1 & in the init script ?

  • Windows 8.1 Update 1 Disk Usage 100%

    - by Gookjin Jeong
Background Information / Computer Specs I have a 14-inch Samsung Series 5 Ultra. Core i5 CPU, 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000. I've had the computer for about 1.5 years with no major problems. Problem The issue appeared at the beginning of April this year, when I updated the OS to Windows 8.1 Update 1 (not from 8 to 8.1). After being on continually (except for at night, when I put it on sleep mode) for about 48 hours, the disk usage as seen by Task Manager hits 100%. When this happens, everything from opening/closing applications to typing and even bringing up the start screen by pressing the Windows key becomes extremely slow. The only way to make the disk usage decrease is to restart the computer. Then the problem repeats. I've used my current laptop (as well as my previous laptops) this way -- putting it on sleep mode at night and restarting it only when Windows needs to install updates -- for a long time. So I know the 100% disk usage is not due to the way I use the computer. The thing that causes the spike varies. Sometimes it's System, sometimes it's one of the various applications I installed (e.g. Chrome, Evernote, Spotify, Wunderlist, iTunes, etc.), and sometimes it's Antimalware Service Executable, etc. Tried Solutions I think I tried almost every solution out there for this problem: Running the check disk command (chkdsk /b /f /v /scan c:) from Admin Command Prompt Running Windows Memory Diagnostic Disabling Superfetch and Windows Search from services.msc Running "Fix problems with Windows Update" from Control Panel -- Troubleshooting Updating and rolling back the graphics driver (Intel HD 4000) Disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available" from Chrome settings Disabling Intel Rapid Storage Technology Running the SFC /SCANNOW command as recommended here Running a quick scan & a full scan from Windows Defender (no threats found) Taking the hard drive out and putting it back Refreshing the computer, from the Update and recovery -- Recovery option in Windows settings NONE of the above worked for me. I was about to give up but then noticed that one of the main culprits of the disk usage spike, as shown in the "Disk Activity" section of the Resource Monitor, was C:\System (pagefile.sys). I googled around and found that one of the recommended solutions was to disable pagefile. I then went to **Control Panel -- System and Security -- System -- Advanced system settings -- Advanced tab -- Performance settings -- Advanced tab -- "Change" under Virtual memory and discovered that the number for "Currently allocated" at the bottom was 1280MB, although the number for "Recommended" was 4533MB. I immediately changed it to 4533MB and checked my family members' computers to see what the numbers were like. All of theirs had a currently allocated space that was only slightly smaller than the recommended space. See screenshot below: This might fix the problem. I'll have to wait a couple more days. But if it doesn't, what in the world should I do next? I'm guessing the hard drive isn't failing because This computer is less than 2 years old; and Speccy says that the status of the HDD is good. Update 5/27/2014 The "4533MB" solution did not work. I had to reboot the computer about 30 minutes ago because the disk usage again hit 100%. When I opened Resource Monitor the C:\System (pagefile.sys) again was shown to be the culprit. I have now disabled pagefile entirely via the same window shown above in the screenshot. The number for "currently allocated" is now 0MB. Will update again in a couple days, or if the problem occurs again, whichever comes sooner.

  • Small adventure game

    - by Nick Rosencrantz
I'm making a small adventure game where the player can walk through Dungeons and meet scary characters: The whole thing is 20 java classes and I'm making this a standalone frame while it could very well be an applet I don't want to make another applet since I might want to recode this in C/C++ if the game or game engine turns out a success. The engine is the most interesting part of the game, it controls players and computer-controlled characters such as Zombies, Reptile Warriors, Trolls, Necromancers, and other Persons. These persons can sleep or walk around in the game and also pick up and move things. I didn't add many things so I suppose that is the next thing to do is to add things that can get used now that I already added many different types of walking persons. What do you think I should add and do with things in the game? The things I have so far is: package adventure; /** * The data type for things. Subclasses will be create that takes part of the story */ public class Thing { /** * The name of the Thing. */ public String name; /** * @param name The name of the Thing. */ Thing( String name ) { this.name = name; } } public class Scroll extends Thing { Scroll (String name) { super(name); } } class Key extends Thing { Key (String name) { super(name); } } The key is the way to win the game if you figure our that you should give it to a certain person and the scroll can protect you from necromancers and trolls. • Java threads, wait time always 00:00:00-Producer/Consumer

    - by user3742254
I am currently doing a producer consumer problem with a number of threads and have had to set priorities and waits to them to ensure that one thread, the security thread, runs last. I have managed to do this and I have managed to get the buffer working. The last thing that I am required to do is to show the wait time of threads that are too large for the buffer and to calculate the average wait time. I have included code to do so, but everything I run the program, the wait time is always returned as 00:00:00, and by extension, the average is returned as the same. I was speaking to one of my colleagues who said that it is not a matter of the code but rather a matter of the computer needing to work off of one processor, which can be adjusted in the task manager settings. He has an HP like myself but his program prints the wait time 180 times, whereas mine prints usually about 3-7 times and is only 00:00:01 on one instance before finishing when I have made the processor adjustments. My other colleague has an iMac and hers puts out an average of 42:00:34(42 minutes??) I am very confused about this because I can see no difference between our codes and like my colleague said, I was wondering is it a computer issue. I am obviously concerned as I wanted to make sure that my code correctly calculated an average wait time, but that is impossible to tell when the wait times always show as 00:00:00. To calculate the thread duration, including the time it entered and exited the buffer was done by using a timestamp import, and then subtracting start time from end time. Is my code correct for this issue or is there something which is missing? I would be very grateful for any solutions. Below is my code: My buffer class package com.Com813cw; import java.text.DateFormat; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; /** * Created by Rory on 10/08/2014. */ class Buffer { private int contents, count = 0, process = 200; • Why is there a /etc/init.d/mysql file on this Slackware machine? How could it have gotten there?

    - by jasonspiro
A client of my IT-consulting service owns a web-development shop. He's been having problems with a Slackware 12.0 server running MySQL 5.0.67. The machine was set up by the client's sysadmin, who left on bad terms. My client no longer employs a sysadmin. As far as I can tell, the only copy of MySQL that's installed is the one described in /var/log/packages/mysql-5.0.67-i486-1: PACKAGE NAME: mysql-5.0.67-i486-1 COMPRESSED PACKAGE SIZE: 16828 K UNCOMPRESSED PACKAGE SIZE: 33840 K PACKAGE LOCATION: /var/slapt-get/archives/./slackware/ap/mysql-5.0.67-i486-1.tgz PACKAGE DESCRIPTION: mysql: mysql (SQL-based relational database server) mysql: mysql: MySQL is a fast, multi-threaded, multi-user, and robust SQL mysql: (Structured Query Language) database server. Their home directory was /root. I've pasted a copy at http://www.pastebin.ca/2167496. My question: Why is there a /etc/init.d/mysql file on this Slackware machine? How could it have gotten there? P.S. This question is far from perfect. Please feel free to edit it.
