• Store a formula in a table and use the formula in a javascript/PHP function

  I have a MySql database where part of it handles instrument's depth of water. Each instrument has its own formula of calculation how depth the water when the operator collect the reading I stored the formula for each instrument in database/MySql. Example formula: [55-57] this is the simple minus operation, where the number is actually represent the id of a row. How do I represent those number with id of a row and later convert it to javascript readable code. I simply want to do keyup event where everytime user key in something into text field then the other part of HTML would reflect changes based on formula that I fetched from database FYI, I'm using BackboneJS together with RequireJS

Hello passionate technical people, First of all let me introduce myself: my name is Timur, I’m a developer from Moldova (that little country between Romania and Ukraine), I develop mostly in .NET and JQuery, but I love to learn more, not being an expert I am familiar with Java (Struts2, Play), PHP (Symfony2), Ruby (Rails), Sencha Touch 2 and other technologies. I was “introduced” in PHP recently by a client of mine who requested to make the work specifically in PHP. Let me tell you a little story about my experience with open source and IDEs: when I was studying in university in 2007 I think, I did a simple little application in PHP and thought “Damn, if only there was a good IDE for PHP so I could relax and no having to remember all the function names”, then when I searched on internet pretty much everyone was using Vim or Emacs on Linux, but it had no autocomplete anyway, just syntax highlighting. I remember using some tool like Notepad++ I think. Nowadays everything changed, we have highlighting and autocomplete for about all standard things in PHP in many IDEs. I use NetBeans for PHP, and I really am happy with the experience I have there with standard PHP code, but for frameworks I still think there is lots of room for improvements. For example we have some Symfony 2 and Twig support. But I’d love to see more of that coming, for example I’m a big fan of file templates, where the main goal is to not waste time on writing over and over again something that can be generated, and it counts even more when you don’t have a lot of autocomplete. So what I thought, “Hey I know Java a little, and NetBeans has plugins, so may be it worth trying to do a file templates plugin”, and so I did, you can find details about my Unified Udevi Symfony2 Plugin for NetBeans 7.2 on my blog. It wasn’t hard, and it even was fun! Give back to open source Now think a little, NetBeans is an open source project and PHP support is just a part of it, so the resources are pretty limited in this area. But we as a community that uses this product, want to have the best possible experience with PHP and frameworks(!!!). So why don’t we GIVE BACK TO OPENSOURCE ? Imagine an IDE that can do all the things you wanted + it is free. Now how far is NetBeans from that point? I guess not so far – you might miss a little niche thing that you use on a daily basis, but then the question appears why don’t you make it happen on your own? NetBeans PHP Community Council What I proposed is to create a NetBeans PHP Community Council that will be formed of people willing to change something, willing to create plugins for their own needs and for the needs of the community, test the plugins created by them too, and basically evolve NetBeans in direction they want to reach. I already talked with the NetBeans PHP team. They are only happy to help this Council, with technical advises, opening some APIs we might need to have access to, and other things. One important thing to mention is that this Council is a Community project, so though we’ll have direct discussions with NetBeans PHP Dev team, NetBeans is not the leading force here, it is the community. • Setup site folders on Apache and PHP [closed]

  I'm trying to set up my first Apache server on my Windows PC at home and I have real trouble finding out which configuration settings go where. I downloaded and installed XAMPP which seemed to get everything nicely set up and can see a working website on http://localhost. So far so good. The point of this is to develop a website of course, and to make my life easier (irony?), I wanted to let the web site root point to my Eclipse project folder. So I opened httpd.conf, uncommented a VirtualHost block and changed its DocumentRoot to my local path. Now when I try to load http://localhost I get a 403 (Access denied) error. So where do I configure permissions for my folder? And is that all I need to let my site run from the folder specified or am I going to have to clear another hurdle?

I whould like to know in what encryption should I encode my data and why first of all, I use GET method because it is search engine inside website. second, I use RTL language (hebrew) and thrid which basically is why I ask this question - firefox and safari (as I understood) encode and decode urls automaticly so if I encoded url, in firefox I will see it decoded which is good but if I copy-paste the url to the address bar and than enter the site firefox encode the uncoded url to utf (i think). anyway, what en/decode should I use, and how can I overcome the firefox auto en/decode?

  The dilemma I'm facing is: should I use static classes for the components of an application just to get nicer looking API? Example - the "normal" way: // example component class Cache{ abstract function get($k); abstract function set($k, $v); } class APCCache extends Cache{ ... } class application{ function __construct() $this->cache = new APCCache(); } function whatever(){ $this->cache->add('blabla'); print $this->cache->get('blablabla'); } } Notice how ugly is this->cache->.... But it gets waay uglier when you try to make the application extensible trough plugins, because then you have to pass the application instance to its plugins, and you get $this->application->cache->... With static functions: interface CacheAdapter{ abstract function get($k); abstract function set($k, $v); } class Cache{ public static $ad; public function setAdapter(CacheAdapter $a){ static::$ad = $ad; } public static function get($k){ return static::$ad->get($k); } ... } class APCCache implements CacheAdapter{ ... } class application{ function __construct(){ cache::setAdapter(new APCCache); } function whatever() cache::add('blabla', 5); print cache::get('blabla'); } } Here it looks nicer because you just call cache::get() everywhere. The disadvantage is that I loose the possibility to extend this class easily. But I've added a setAdapter method to make the class extensible to some point. I'm relying on the fact that I won't need to rewrite to replace the cache wrapper, ever, and that I won't need to run multiple application instances simultaneously (it's basically a site - and nobody works with two sites at the same time) So, am doing it wrong?

• Building a database class in PHP

  I wonder if I should write a database class for my application, and if so, how to accomplish it? Over there on SO, a guy mentioned it should be written as an abstract class. However, I can't understand why this would be a benefit. Do I understand correctly, that if I would write an abstract class, every other class that methods will need a database connection, could simply extend this abstract class and have it's own database object? If so, how is this different from a "normal" class where I could instantiate an database object? Another method would be to completely forget about my own class and to instantiate a mysqli object on demand. What do you recommend?

• Self hosted PHP shopping cart with no storefront?

  I am looking for a shopping cart to implement on a simple website instead of the default paypal cart that is used with their add to cart buttons (I don't like the non-styeable new tab/window cart). However, I really like the ability to simply add the buttons to existing pages. I do not have a lot of products and do not want to deal with a storefront and complex templates. The main features I need: Self-hosted Easy to implement with existing website (copy and paste button code, etc.) Ability to have variations on one button with different prices (dropdown with sizes, colors, etc.) Ability to track inventory and disallow out of stock orders Ability to pass cart details to PayPal Website Payments Standard I have seen most of the large storefront options: oscommerce, zencart, cubecart, opencart, prestashop, magento, cs-cart, lemonstand, etc. but these are way more than I need. I don't need the storefront or customer accounts or templated pages, etc. I have seen e-junkie, which is not far off from what I would like, but it is not self-hosted and I would prefer an in-site cart (or dynamic overlay cart) rather than a lightbox or new tab/window cart. I also love the paypal minicart and its implementation, but there is no way to track inventory. So, does anyone have any recommendations that might meet these requests?

  When I read these lines aloud to someone: $controller->process(); UserManager::getInstance(); How should the -> and :: be pronounced? Reading the characters themselves in cumbersome and I don't know of any nicknames for them. Being a developer who is used to C-style syntax, I'd like to say "dot", but I'd like something that is easy to say and people can easily understand. It would also be good to know if there are any pronunciations that have become de-facto standards among teams of developers.

  I have collected many free themes from around internet. Each of them has a screenshot.jpg or png file on their folder. I want to scan all the folders for that file, and return the full file path to be used with an img html tag. I am not interested on partial path or folders where there are not screenshots. For example, if my fodler structure is: ./a/b/ ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./f/ ./g/screenshot.jpg ./h/i/j/k/ ./l/m/screenshot.png ./n/o/ ./p/screenshot.jpg I want to get: ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./g/screenshot.jpg ./l/m/screenshot.png ./p/screenshot.jpg I managed somehow to get a recursive function, but I figured only the way to return an array and then i can't get rid of what I don't need, and I miss png. • Object oriented EDI handling in PHP

  I'm currently starting a new sub project where I will: Retrieve the order information from our mainframe Save the order information to our web-apps' database Send the order as EDI (either D01b or D93a) Receive the order response, despatch advice and invoice messages Do all kinds of fun things with the resulting datasets. However I am struggling with my initial class designs. The order information will be retrieved from the mainframe which will result in a "AOrder" class, this isn't a problem, I am not sure about how to mold this local object into an EDI string. Should I create EDIOrder/EDIOrderResponse/etc classes with matching decorators (EDIOrderD01BDecorator, EDIOrderD93ADecorator)? Do I need builder objects or can I do: // $myOrder is instance of AOrder $myOrder->toEDIOrder(); $decorator = new EDIOrderD01BDecorator($myOrder); $edi = $decorator->getEDIString(); And it'll have to work the other way around as well. Is the following code a good way of handling this problem or should I go about this differently? $ediString = $myEDIMessageBroker->fetch(); $ediOrderResponse = EDIOrderResponse::fromString($ediString); I'm just not so sure about how I should go about designing the classes and interactions between them.   I'm in the stage of planning new CMS. Before I used WordPress and other open source CMS for my clients, but I always had to write new modules and even mess with the code in order to do certain things. Which as you understand is not the best thing to do. So I finally decided to make my own CMS to work with, the way I need. But before I start it, I would like to think it trough carefully to ensure that I won't need to rewrite it ground up, just because I forgot to include some feature into architecture or did it wrong. I would like to hear your thoughs and the most important I would like you to suggest me some articles or books on that subject, especially on architecture of such systems. I googled a few good books, but that is not enough. The way I'm planning to do it: PHP5, completely OOP, modules architecture. You make a page and add any modules you need there, but modules are not global, but local to a page so you can make two pages with the same module, but content will be different if you set different "content ID" for these two entities. But it can be set the same, so two pages has the same content of the modules put there. Also I plan to support online storage web service (like amazon S3) for images and files, so I would like to hear your thoughs on it too. Also I have not yet decided how to store language data. I don't want to use DB for that, but I haven't decided yet. Also I think I will support other DB with global DB class and separate DB wrappers for MySQL and other databases. And, well, I would appreciate any other information you can provide for that subject.

  I posted this a while ago on stackoverflow, they thought it would be better place here, I agree. Essentially I know what I want to accomplish, and I have something to the effect of what I want but I am not satisfied with it. Here's the problem. Each user has some states: STR (how hard they hit), DEF (dodging/blocking attacks), SPD (when they can strike), and STAMINA (basically their endurance in game, if this runs out they can no longer fight and lose) What I need is something like this: UserA Stats: STR: 1,000 DEF: 2500 SPD: 2000 (HP: 1000/1000) UserB Stats: STR: 1,500 DEF: 500 SPD: 4000 (HP: 1000/1000) Because the second user has double the speed, he lands twice the amount of hits on the first user, before he gets hit. Because he has less strength than the first users defence, he will do no, to little damage. This is how the battle would theoretically go: UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserA strikes UserB for 500 damage UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserB strikes UserA for 0 damage UserA strikes UserB for 500 damage, and sends him to the hospital! I was using this code, which is buggy, and not efficient, I just need a better way to do this: http://pastebin.com/15LiQQuJ Oh, and if anyone has some good ideas on how to improve the concept that would be cool too! • Syncing client and server CRUD operations using json and php

  I'm working on some code to sync the state of models between client (being a javascript application) and server. Often I end up writing redundant code to track the client and server objects so I can map the client supplied data to the server models. Below is some code I am thinking about implementing to help. What I don't like about the below code is that this method won't handle nested relationships very well, I would have to create multiple object trackers. One work around is for each server model after creating or loading, simply do $model->clientId = $clientId; IMO this is a nasty hack and I want to avoid it. Adding a setCientId method to all my model object would be another way to make it less hacky, but this seems like overkill to me. Really clientIds are only good for inserting/updating data in some scenarios. I could go with a decorator pattern but auto generating a proxy class seems a bit involved. I could use a generic proxy class that uses a __call function to allow for original object data to be accessed, but this seems wrong too. • PHP composer question

  just getting started with composer and I have a couple of questions. When I use composer to add a dependency, the dependency gets added to my folder's Vendor directory. The newly added package not only comes with the source code for that package, but all packagist required files for the developer to test and add that package to packagist repo (composer.json, .travis.yaml, license, readme.md, etc). For my project, do I need to keep the vendor's required packagist files in my project? Can I clean the package folder structure up a little? I added the package, Slim micro framework, which nests the source files three directories deep upon installation, ../vendor/slim/slim/Slim/(source Files). Is it worth moving these files to the top Slim directory like: ../vendor/Slim/(source files)? Or will this ruin the integrity of the package?
