• Have you worked with a well designed application?

  Inspired by this question, I started wondering - is there or has there ever been such a thing as a "well designed application"? One where the architecture would be perfect and no refactoring would ever be needed; code would be easy to read and understand even for someone new to the project; changes could be done with a 100% certainty that they won't break anything; etc? I must admit that whatever codebases I've worked with, they've all been more or less a mess. Even code that I start myself only stays organized at the start, and then slowly deteriorates as the time passes. I'm even starting to accept this as part of life and can't figure out whether I should be worried about that or not. So... is there such a thing as a "well designed application"? Or is all our code so shitty that there isn't even a point in trying to make it better, because it will never be good anyway?

• What Counts for A DBA: Observant

  When walking up to the building where I work, I can see CCTV cameras placed here and there for monitoring access to the building. We are required to wear authorization badges which could be checked at any time. Do we have enemies?  Of course! No one is 100% safe; even if your life is a fairy tale, there is always a witch with an apple waiting to snack you into a thousand years of slumber (or at least so I recollect from elementary school.) Even Little Bo Peep had to keep a wary lookout.    We nerdy types (or maybe it was just me?) generally learned on the school playground to keep an eye open for unprovoked attack from simpler, but more muscular souls, and take steps to avoid messy confrontations well in advance. After we’d apprehensively negotiated adulthood with varying degrees of success, these skills of watching for danger, and avoiding it,  translated quite well to the technical careers so many of us were destined for. And nowhere else is this talent for watching out for irrational malevolence so appropriate as in a career as a production DBA.   It isn’t always active malevolence that the DBA needs to watch out for, but the even scarier quirks of common humanity.  A large number of the issues that occur in the enterprise happen just randomly or even just one time ever in a spurious manner, like in the case where a person decided to download the entire MSDN library of software, cross join every non-indexed billion row table together, and simultaneously stream the HD feed of 5 different sporting events, making the network access slow while the corporate online sales just started. The decent DBA team, like the going, gets tough under such circumstances. They spring into action, checking all of the sources of active information, observes the issue is no longer happening now, figures that either it wasn’t the database’s fault and that the reboot of the whatever device on the network fixed the problem.  This sort of reactive support is good, and will be the initial reaction of even excellent DBAs, but it is not the end of the story if you really want to know what happened and avoid getting called again when it isn’t even your fault.   When fires start raging within the corporate software forest, the DBA’s instinct is to actively find a way to douse the flames and get back to having no one in the company have any idea who they are.  Even better for them is to find a way of killing a potential problem while the fires are small, long before they can be classified as raging. The observant DBA will have already been monitoring the server environment for months in advance.  Most troubles, such as disk space and security intrusions, can be predicted and dealt with by alerting systems, whereas other trouble can come out of the blue and requires a skill of observing ongoing conditions and noticing inexplicable changes that could signal an emerging problem.  You can’t automate the DBA, because the bankable skill of a DBA is in detecting the early signs of unexpected problems, and working out how to deal with them before anyone else notices them.    To achieve this, the DBA will check the situation as it is currently happening,  and in many cases is likely to have been the person who submitted the problem to the level 1 support person in the first place, just to let the support team know of impending issues (always well received, I tell you what!). Database and host computer settings, configurations, and even critical data might be profiled and captured for later comparisons. He’ll use Monitoring tools, built-in, commercial (Not to be too crassly commercial or anything, but there is one such tool is SQL Monitor) and lots of homebrew monitoring tools to monitor for problems and changes in the server environment.   You will know that you have it right when a support call comes in and you can look at your monitoring tools and quickly respond that “response time is well within the normal range, the query that supports the failing interface works perfectly and has actually only been called 67% as often as normal, so I am more than willing to help diagnose the problem, but it isn’t the database server’s fault and is probably a client or networking slowdown causing the interface to be used less frequently than normal.” And that is the best thing for any DBA to observe…

• Why am I asked for default's keyring at startup?

  I'm prompted for default's keyring at every boot since 11.10 upgrade, even though I don't see any application I have needing at startup (I have no wifi, and disabled gwibber-service) How can I know which application is requesting it ? How can I disable it ? • How to deal with fellow programmer who likes to delegate task with lack any support from boss [closed]

  I have a problem with my fellow programmer. We are currently working together in a small project that need to be shipped every 2 weeks. She has a tendency to ask for help for every issues that she is facing. Whether it's a compile error, algorithm problem or even sync/merge issue that caused by herself. She does not even bother to check Google or try to find out by herself. I can be asked to help her for 5-10 times a day. Everyday her husband keeps calling (4-6 times a day), and most of the code that has been delivered by her are actually incorrect. Today she framed me for sending the wrong delivery product. She went home after lunch on the delivery day without telling PM and other team member on that day and her code she commited does not work at all. It's not even tested. I have no choice to roll back her code and cleaning her code just for sake to able to run the product. I have warned her about her defective codes for almost 3 iterations. She said when she was not around I should be able to test her module for her. I snapped and yelled that I am not her slave and directly reported to my boss. However, my boss is not a person that can manage and care about software quality. What is the most important thing to my boss is delivery of product, whether it tested or not. He can even asked us to deliver something that not even tested by QA to the client, on the next day. Most of our suggestion is not followed by him. He even asked me to apologize to her because I snapped. I am tired of the whole situation. This kind of thing keeps repeated. I do have saving to be able to survive for 6 months and the idea of resigning is keep haunting. There is nothing else that can be learned in my current job and I had been in a better environment than this. What should I do with the situation?

• What's so useful about closures (in JS)?

  In my quest to understand closures in the context of JS, I find myself asking why do you even need to use closures? What's so great about having an inner function be able to access the parent function's variables even after the parent function returns? I'm not even sure I asked that question correctly because I don't understand how to use them. Can someone give a real world example in JS where a closure is more beneficial vs. the alternative, whatever that may be?

  I got this idea from XKCD's Hofstadter comic; what's the best way to create a conditional loop in (any) Lisp dialect that executes a function until it returns NIL at which time it collects the returned values into a list. For those who haven't seen the joke, it's goes that Douglas Hofstadter's “eight-word” autobiography consists of only six words: “I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym” containing continuation of the joke: (some odd meta-paraprosdokian?) “Is Meta” — the joke being that the autobiography is actually “I'm So Meta, Even This Acronym Is Meta”. • How do I upgrade the BIOS to boot the motherboard when the CPU is not suported?

  So I have a Tyan S8225 motherboard with a Valencia (Opteron 4200) CPU. Two of us have tried everything. We have even swapped the whole motherboard, Power supply, memory, even a different CPU (still Valencia). We even tried it without any memory installed and with only a single CPU. There are no beep codes as I suspect even those are controlled by the BIOS boot process. We put the whole thing on the bench with just the power supply, VGA, keyboard and network (for IPMI) connected. The IPMI is not even showing the BIOS starting, but the IPMI is working. After some hunting around, I discovered the claim on the website is that the Valencia CPU's are not supported on older BIOS revisions. For a start, I don't know what the bios revision is and if it's older but it's the only thing left. Could the BIOS be causing a board not to boot at all? If that's the case, then is there any other way to update the BIOS without buying an old CPU only to be put back in a box just to update the BIOS? Yes, we even tried updating the BIOS through IPMI but you can't do that either.

  I'm looking for opinions on whether microformats should be used to name JSON elements. For instance, there is a microformat for physical addresses, that looks like this: <div class="adr"> <div class="street-address">665 3rd St.</div> <div class="extended-address">Suite 207</div> <span class="locality">San Francisco</span>, <span class="region">CA</span> <span class="postal-code">94107</span> <div class="country-name">U.S.A.</div> </div> There is a document available on using JSON and Microformats. The information above could be represented as JSON data like this: "adr": { "street-address":"665 3rd St.", "extended-address":"Suite 207", "locality":"San Fransicso", "region":"CA", "postal-code":"94107", "country-name":"U.S.A." }, The issue I have with this is that I'd like my JSON data to be as lightweight as possible, but still human readable. While still supporting international addresses, I would prefer something like this: "address": { "street":"665 3rd St.", "extended":"Suite 207", "locality":"San Fransicso", "region":"CA", "code":"94107", "country":"U.S.A." }, If I'm designing a new JSON API right now, does it make sense to use microformats from the start? Or should I not really worry about it? Is there some other standard that is more specific to JSON that I should look at?

• Copy data from different worksheet to a master worksheet but no duplicates

  hi all, i want to clarify my initial question for a possible solutions from any savior out there. Say i have 3 excel sheets one for each user for data entry located in separate workbooks to avoid excel share workbook problems. I also have a master sheet in another workbook where i want individual data enter on those sheets precisely sheets 1 should copy to the next available row of sheet 1 in the master sheet as the users enter them. i need a vba code that can copy each record without copying a duplicate row in the master sheet but highlight the duplicate row and lookup the initial record in a master sheet and return the name of the Imputer looking up the row say column ( I) where each user sign there initials after every row of entry like below. All 4 worksheets are formatted as below: lastname account cardno. type tran amount date location comments initials JAME 65478923 1975 cash 500 4/10/2010 miles st. this acct is resolve MLK BEN 52436745 1880 CHECK 400 4/12/2010 CAREY ST Ongoing investigation MLK JAME 65478923 1975 cash 500 4/10/2010 miles st. this acct is resolve MLK I need the vba to recognize duplicates only if the account number and the card number matches the initial records. • valgrind complains doing a very simple strtok in c

  Hi I'm trying to tokenize a string by loading an entire file into a char[] using fread. For some strange reason it is not always working, and valgrind complains in this very small sample program. • Using RecordStore in Java J2ME

  Hi, I am currently doing some J2ME development. I am having a problem in that a user can add and remove elements to the record store, and if a record gets deleted, then that record is left empty and the others don't move up one. I'm trying to come up with a loop that will check if a record has anything in it (incase it has been deleted) and if it does then I want to add the contents of that record to a list. My code is similar to as follows: for (int i = 1; i <= rs.getNumRecords(); i++) { // Re-allocate if necessary if (rs.getRecordSize(i) > recData.length) recData = new byte[rs.getRecordSize(i)]; len = rs.getRecord(i, recData, 0); st = new String(recData, 0, len); System.out.println("Record #" + i + ": " + new String(recData, 0, len)); System.out.println("------------------------------"); if(st != null) { list.insert(i-1, st, null); } } When it gets to rs.getRecordSize(i), I always get a "javax.microedition.rms.InvalidRecordIDException: error finding record". I know this is due to the record being empty but I can't think of a way to get around this problem. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I want to insert a hash in the db using Storable::nfreeze but the data is not inserted properly. My code is as follows: %rec=(); $rec{'name'} = 'my name'; $rec{'address'} = 'my address'; my $order1 = new Order(); $order1->set_session(\%rec); $self->createOrder($order1); sub createOrder { my $self = $_[0]; my $order = $_[1]; # Retrieve the fields to insert into the database. my $st = $dbh->prepare("insert into order (session,.......) values(?,........)"); my $session = %{$order->get_session()}; $st->execute(&Storable::nfreeze(\%session),.....); $st->finish(); } sub getOrder { ... my $session = &Storable::thaw( $ref->{'session'} ); ..... } The thaw is working fine because I tested it withe some rows that have been inserted correctly, but when I try to get a row that was inserted using the createOrder subroutine, I get an error saying: Storable binary image v36.65 more recent than I am (v2.7) at blib/lib/Storable.pm (autosplit into blib/lib/auto/Storable/thaw.al) line 415 The error comes from the line that have thaw. The nfreeze did not store the hash properly. Can someone point me to what I'm doing wrong in the createOrder subroutine? I know the module version have nothing to do with the problem.

  Hello, I want to insert a hash in the db using Storage::nfreeze but the data is not inserted properly. the code is as follow: %rec=(); $rec{'name'} = 'my name'; $rec{'address'} = 'my address'; my $order1 = new Order(); $order1->set_session(\%rec); $self->createOrder($order1); sub createOrder { my $self = $_[0]; my $order = $_[1]; # Retrieve the fields to insert into the database. my $st = $dbh->prepare("insert into order (session,.......) values(?,........)"); my $session = %{$order->get_session()}; $st->execute(&Storable::nfreeze(\%session),.....); $st->finish(); } sub getOrder { ... my $session = &Storable::thaw( $ref->{'session'} ); ..... } the thaw is working fine because I tested it withe some rows that have been inserted correctly. but when I try to get a row that was inserted using the createOrder subroutine, I get an error saying" Storable binary image v36.65 more recent than I am (v2.7) at blib/lib/Storable.pm (autosplit into blib/lib/auto/Storable/thaw.al) line 415 the error comes from the line that have thaw. the nfreeze did not store the hash properly. Can someone point me to what i m doing wrong in the createOrder subroutine? Thanks in advance. I know the module version have nothing to do with the problem.

• Is it possible to group records belonging to an entity in dbunit?

  Our JPA entity model auto-generates primary key identifiers for user, user_address tables. Would it be possible to group these entities given below via dbunit, so that I don't need to provide neither the primary key as well as the foreign key reference from user_address.user_id. It is getting very hard to maintain these keys (i.e. I would prefer to group the primary record 'user' and the child records 'user_address' so that dbunit can group them automatically by looking up the entity metadata).   Need help on this. I'm just wondering why this error occurred. Below is the script concerned. However, when I used this, it generated the error mentioned. In the database, the loc.CreatedBy is not null while the loc.UpdatedBy is nullable. I checked it by running the script but it's working fine. How do I do with it? What's wrong with my code? Please help.
