• ASP.NET - I am generating an .XLS file with a DLL, how do I grant permissions for writing to file? (

  I'm generating an .XLS file with a DLL (Excel Library http://code.google.com/p/excellibrary/) I've added this DLL as a reference to my project. The code to save the .XLS to disk is running, but it's encountering a permissions issue. I've attempted to set full access for IUSRS, Network Service, and Everyone just to see if I could get it working, and none of these seems to make a difference. • Ruby Fileutils.cp_r Permission Denied when :preserve => true

  Hello, I am trying to implement a poor-man's backup/mirroring script and am having some trouble. I am on Windows-XP, using Ruby's FileUtils module to recursively copy files. So long as I don't set the :preserve flag to true, everything works fine. Works: FileUtils.cp_r('Source_dir', 'Dest_dir', :verbose => true) Doesn't work: FileUtils.cp_r('Source_dir', 'Dest_dir', :verbose => true, :preserve => true) I have full permissions on the Dest_dir as it's on the desktop of my local machine and I just created it. I can copy and delete files and folders, but apparently changing, or maintaining the file attributes with :preserve isn't working. I haven't had a chance to try this on a Mac or linux box, but from reading around online the :preserve flag is a normal stumbling block to come up against in a Windows environment. In a similar line of questioning, what is the default behavior for FileUtils.cp_r when it encounters an existing file at the destination directory? Simply overwrite and replace everything in Destination with whatever is in Source, or can I skip a file with conflicts and just log it for resolution later? (If this should be a separate question, just let me know and I'll make it one.) Thanks, Spencer

• Is the Windows dev environment worth the cost?

  I recently made the move from Linux development to Windows development. And as much of a Linux enthusiast that I am, I have to say - C# is a beautiful language, Visual Studio is terrific, and now that I've bought myself a trackball my wrist has stopped hurting from using the mouse so much. But there's one thing I can't get past: the cost. Windows 7, Visual Studio, SQL Server, Expression Blend, ViEmu, Telerik, MSDN - we're talking thousands for each developer on the project! You're definitely getting something for your money - my question is, is it worth it? [Not every developer needs all the aforementioned tools - but have you ever heard of anyone writing C# code without Visual Studio? I've worked on pretty large software projects in Linux without having to pay for any development tool whatsoever.] Now obviously, if you're already a Windows shop, it doesn't pay to retrain all your developers. And if you're looking to develop a Windows desktop app, you just can't do that in Linux. But if you were starting a new web application project and could hire developers who are experts in whatever languages you want, would you still choose Windows as your development platform despite the high cost? And if yes, why?

  I'm using AlivePDF to create a PDF file, then save it to the desktop. I can then use an HTMLLoader to display my lovely PDF file. Now, the print button in Adobe Reader works fine. However, there will be young children using the app, so I'd like to have a big "Print" button right above it. I figured I could just start up a print job and feed it my HTMLLoader. Am I doing something wrong here, cause I can't seem to get any output? note: variable "stuff" below is my HTMLLoader. • "Exclusive" DirectDraw palette isn't actually exclusive

  We're maintaining an old video game that uses a full-screen 256-color graphics mode with DirectDraw. The problem is, some applications running in the background sometimes try to change the system palette while the game is running, which results in corrupted graphics. We can (sometimes) detect when this happens by processing the WM_PALETTECHANGED message. A few update versions ago we added logging (just log the window title/class/process name), which helped users identify offending applications and close them. MSN Live Messenger was a common culprit. The problem got worse when we found out that Windows Vista (and 7) does it "by itself". The WM_PALETTECHANGED parameters point towards CSRSS and the desktop window. In Vista, a workaround that often worked was to open any folder (Computer, Documents, etc.) and leave it open while running the game. Sounds ridiculous, but it worked - in most cases. In Windows 7, not even this workaround worked any more. Users found that stopping some services (Windows Update and the indexing service) also resolved the problem on some configurations. Some time ago I just started trying random things in hope of finding a solution. I found that setting the GDI palette (using Create/SelectPalette) before setting the DirectDraw palette (using IDirectDrawPalette::SetEntries) would restore the palette after it became corrupted (WM_PALETTECHANGED handler). SetSystemPaletteUse and calling SetPalette on the primary surface helped some more. However, there is still perceivable flickering when an application tries to steal the palette, which is especially prominent during fades. Question: is there a way to get a "real" exclusive palette, which completely disallows other applications changing the Windows palette as long as our game retains focus?

• Advice on a DB that can be uploaded to a website by a smart client for collecting survey feedback

  Hello, I'm hoping you can help. I'm looking for a zero config multi-user datbase that my winforms application can easily upload to a webserver folder (together with 1 or 2 classic asp pages) and am looking for some suggestions/recommendations. The idea is that the database will be used to collect feedback entered by people filling in the asp pages. The pages will write to the database using javascript. The database will subsequently be downloaded again for processing once the responses are in. In Summary: It will mostly run in MS Windows environments. I have a modest budget for this and do not mind paying for such a database. No runtime licensing costs. Should be xcopy - Once uploaded to a website folder it should be operational. It should not have a dotnet CLR dependency. It should support a resonable level of concurrent access. Average respondent count would be around 20-30 but one never knows. Should be a reasonable size so that uploads/downloads to and from the site will be reasonably fast. Would appreciate your suggestions/comments Many thanks Abz To clarify - this is a desktop commercial application for feedback management in a vertical market. It uses SQL Server as the backing store. The application currently provides feedback management from email and paper feedback. I now want to add web feedback capability. Getting users to to make their SQL servers accessible to a website is not at option at this time as I am want to make getting up and running as painless as possible. I intend to release a web based implementation of the software in the near future but for now am looking at the above as a pragmatic way to provide web based feedback collection.

• android & libgdx - disable blurry images rendering

  i'm trying out libgdx as an opengl wrapper , and i have some issues with its graphical rendering : for some reason , all images (textures) on android device look a little blurred using libgdx . this also includes text (font) . however, for normal images , even though i show the entire image , i expect it to look as sharp as i see it on a computer , especially if i have such a good screen on the device (it's galaxy nexus) . i've tried to set the anti-aliasing off , by using the next code : final AndroidApplicationConfiguration androidApplicationConfiguration=new AndroidApplicationConfiguration(); androidApplicationConfiguration.numSamples=0; //tried the value of 1 too. ... i've also tried to set the scaling method to various methods , but with no luck. example: texture.setFilter(TextureFilter.Nearest,TextureFilter.Nearest); as a test , i've found a sharp image that is exactly the same as the seen resolution on the device (720x1184 for galaxy nexus , because of the buttons bar) , and i've put it to be on the background of the libgdx app . of course , i had to add extra blank space in order for the texute to be loaded , so the final size of the image (which will include content and empty space) is still a power of 2 for both width and height (1024x2048 in my case) . on the desktop app , it look ok . on the device , it looked blurred. a weird thing that i've noticed is that when i change the device's orientation (horizontal <= vertical) , for the very short time before the rotating animation starts , i see both the image and the text very well . can anyone please help me?

• How to Use Calculated Color Values with ColorMatrix?

  I am changing color values of each pixel in an image based on a calculation. The problem is that this takes over 5 seconds on my machine with a 1000x1333 image and I'm looking for a way to optimize it to be much faster. I think ColorMatrix may be an option, but I'm having a difficult time figure out how I would get a set of pixel RGB values, use that to calculate and then set the new pixel value. I can see how this can be done if I was just modifying (multiplying, subtracting, etc.) the original value with ColorMatrix, but now how I can use the pixels returned value to use it to calculate and new value. Is this even possible with ColorMatrix?

Now I want this process to be done using a progress bar (so when the download progress is at 50% the progress bar is half-way through). • Java - SwingWorker - problem

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application. This app executes the same task public class MyTask implements Callable<MyObject> { in multiple thread simultaneously. Now, when a user clicks on a "start" button, I have created a SwingWorker myWorker and have executed it. Now, this myWorker creates multiple instances of MyTask and submits them to an ExecutorService. Each MyTask instance has a loop and generates an intermediate result at every iteration. Now, I want to collect these intermediate results from each MyTask instances as soon as they are generated. Then after collecting these intermediate results from every MyTask instance, I want to publish it through SwingWorker.publish(MyObject) so that the progress is shown on the EDT. Q1. How can I implement this? Should I make MyTask subclass of SwingWorker instead of Callable to get intermediate results also, because I think that Callable only returns final result. Q2. If the answer of Q1. is yes, then can you give me a small example to show how can I get those intermediate results and aggregate them and then publish them from main SwingWorker? Q3. If I can't use SwingWorker in this situation, then how can I implement this?

• GIT clone repo across local file system

  Hi all, I am a complete Noob when it comes to GIT. I have been just taking my first steps over the last few days. I setup a repo on my laptop, pulled down the Trunk from an SVN project (had some issues with branches, not got them working), but all seems ok there. I now want to be able to pull or push from the laptop to my main desktop. The reason being the laptop is handy on the train as I spend 2 hours a day travelling and can get some good work done. But my main machine at home is great for development. So I want to be able to push / pull from the laptop to the main computer when I get home. I thought the most simple way of doing this would be to just have the code folder shared out across the LAN and do: git clone file://192.168.10.51/code unfortunately this doesn't seem to be working for me: so I open a git bash cmd and type the above command, I am in C:\code (the shared folder for both machines) this is what I get back: Initialized empty Git repository in C:/code/code/.git/ fatal: 'C:/Program Files (x86)/Git/code' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly How can I share the repository between the two machines in the most simple of ways. There will be other locations that will be official storage points and places where the other devs and CI server etc will pull from, this is just so that I can work on the same repo across two machines. • C# Uploading files to file server

  Hello All, Currently I have an application that receives an uploaded file from my web application. I now need to transfer that file to a file server which happens to be located on the same network (however this might not always be the case). I was attempting to use the webclient class in C# .NET. string filePath = "C:\\test\\564.flv"; try { WebClient client = new WebClient(); NetworkCredential nc = new NetworkCredential(uName, password); Uri addy = new Uri("\\\\192.168.1.28\\Files\\test.flv"); client.Credentials = nc; byte[] arrReturn = client.UploadFile(addy, filePath); Console.WriteLine(arrReturn.ToString()); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } The machine located at 192.168.1.28 is a file server and has a share c:\Files. As of right now I am receiving an error of Login failed bad user name or password, but I can open explorer and type in that path login successfully. I can also login using remote desktop, so I know the user account works. Any ideas on this error? Is it possible to transfer a file directly like that? With the webclient class or maybe some other class? Thanks

I've quickly looked through NetBeans's Project menu, but didn't find any clue on how to configurate a persistent connection to a selected DB. If it's important, i'm writing a purely desktop app, i.e. using Java EE. Also, it's worth mentioning that I'm a kinda beginner in Java.

• Compiling and using NTL c++ library for Windows

  Hi there, I have compiled the NTL inifite precision integer arithmetic library for c++, using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. I did as explained, on this site, using the Visual Studio interface, rather than from the command prompt. Actually I would rather do it from the command prompt, but I was not sure how to. Anyhow, I got the library compiled, and I now want to compile a program using the library, from the command prompt. The program I am trying to compile, has been tested on a linux system, where I compile it with the following c++ -I/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/include mpqs.cpp main.cpp -o main -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/lib -lntl -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/gmp-4.2.1/lib -lgmp -lm Nevermind the gmp stuff, I dont have that installed on Windows. It is purely an optional thing that will make the NTL run faster. Anyhow, this works fine on linux. It is as if, my mpqs.h file is not included into the compilation process? Also I dont understand why it complains about .push_back() for a vector type? Help is much appreciated!

• What is a good programming language/environment for Linux database applications?

  I could use some advice on my move from the Windows world to Linux. For my business, I have used VB6 and Microsoft Access with both Access databases and SQL server in the past. The easy to use forms, report writers and programming language were perfect for CRUD apps and analysis for our small hotel/restaurant business. After using Linux at home for some time I would like to convert our small business. Our server is already a Linux box using Samba. I am happy with the OpenOffice.org applications instead of Microsoft Office. The only thing which is holding me back is a desktop database application where I can develop the forms and reports we require. Base does not seem to be up to the job yet from my experience. I would like something like VB.Net with visual studio (express) but I would like to avoid Mono – I just don’t see the point of it. (You can correct me if I’m wrong.) But a good collection of forms, controls and a good report writer would be ideal. I have looked at web based stuff like Ruby on Rails, but I think a webserver for our 5 pc network is overkill. I don’t mind running a proper database on our Ubuntu 9.10 server. I may have exposed a few prejudices above but my mind is open. Any thoughts?

• How to build a web crawler to find a specific advert, which is in an iframe loaded by Javascript

  I'm trying to find all instances of an advert on a website. The advert is in an iframe which is loaded by javascript (it doesn't appear at all if javascript is turned off). Detecting the advert itself is extremely simple, both the name of the flash file and the target of the href always contain a certain string. What would be the best "starting point" for achieving this? At the moment I'm considering an Adobe AIR app, which could crawl the site and examine the DOM to find the ad, and would run javascript and load the content of the iframe. The other option I can think of is using Firefox as the platform (using maybe GreaseMonkey or Selenium? I don't really know how to leverage Firefox like this). Does anyone know of anything suitable to build this, or have any suggestions on using Firefox to do it? Extra details: Being CPU intensive isn't really an issue, nor is anything depending on a browser being open. This doesn't need to run on a headless server, it will be running on a powerful desktop box. OS is also not an issue. It would be advantageous if the crawler loaded each page multiple times, as the advert is in rotation. While the crawler does need to execute the javascript and load the content of the iframe, it does not need to be able to display flash files.

  Hello, I'm uploading images to a folder and I want to display each new image on a web page every time it is saved in the folder. I can display the initial image, which is already in the folder, and I can also detect when a new image is saved into the folder but I don't know how to display the new images. I'm new to web development. Can somebody help me?   Can you recommend a full-text search engine? (Preferably open source) I have a database of many (though relatively short) HTML documents. I want users to be able to search this database by entering one or more search words in my C++ desktop application. Hence, I’m looking for a fast full-text search solution to integrate with my app. Ideally, it should: Skip common words, such as the, of, and, etc. Support stemming, i.e. search for run also finds documents containing runner, running and ran. Be able to update its index in the background as new documents are added to the database. Be able to provide search word suggestions (like Google Suggest) Have a well-documented API To illustrate, assume the database has just two documents: Document 1: This is a test of text search. Document 2: Testing is fun. The following words should be in the index: fun, search, test, testing, text. If the user types t in the search box, I want the application to be able to suggest test, testing and text (Ideally, the application should be able to query the search engine for the 10 most common search words starting with t). A search for testing should return both documents. Other points: I don't need multi-user support I don't need support for complex queries The database resides on the user's computer, so the indexing should be performed locally. Can you suggest a C or C++ based solution? (I’ve briefly reviewed CLucene and Xapian, but I’m not sure if either will address my needs, especially querying the search word indexes for the suggest feature).

• Android - Correspondence between ImageView coordinates and Bitmap Pixels

  In my application I want the user to be able to select some content of an Image contained inside an ImageView. To select the content I subclassed the ImageView class making it implement the OnTouchListener so to draw over it a rectangle with borders decided by the user. Here is an example of the result of the drawing (to have an idea you can think of it as when you click with the mouse on your desktop and drag the mouse): Now I need to determine which pixels of the Bitmap image correspond to the selected part. It's kind of easy to determine which are the points of the ImageView belonging to the rectangle, but I don't know how to get the correspondent pixels, since the ImageView has a different aspect ratio than the original image. I followed the approach described especially here, but also here, but am not fully satisfied because in my opinion the correspondence made is 1 on 1 between pixels and points on the ImageView and does not give me all the correspondent pixels on the original image to the selected area.
